Chris,
I feel for you...
Bathing a cat is not my idea of fun. Have to go along with you on the
drink body armor!
I don't care what the experts say, it's an ordeal for both guardian and
fur-kid.
Unless you have a Maine Coon who LOVES water! Like my Cornelius. He's
just s big, and at times lazy. I can give him a bath and it's a real treat
for him.
Now my Mr. Chow. he was like it sounds you're dealing with!
LOL!

Anyway, for Cornball, I use "Earthbath -Mango-Tango", plus their
conditioner afterwards, when needed. I get it at the health food place.
Works great (as long as you can brush/comb the mats somewhat before
bathing...)
Pre-bath I use the "Miracle Coat Spray". Miracle Coat also makes a
foam bath a special detangling shampoo, but I haven't used either of those
2 personally.
Halo makes a good shampoo, but never used it on a long hair. (And, as luck
would have it, all I have is long hairs now...Talk about Furball City!!)

Good luck. And have fun!!!
Patti

I have good news to report, Jake has regained his appetite and his personality as well. I am so relieved! I don't know what it was, but I stopped the vitamin C and the meds and he slowly came back. He still is having diarrhea though.I will try the
Diarsanyl, hopefully that will help.

I am giving him Interferon -- what are some other things you all use to supplement? Sorry for all the questions, but I am new to this and want to do what's best for my kitty!

Thanks for the tips! The vet did suggest Pepsid so I have been doing that. I am mainly concerned about his lack of appetitie, and general him not being himself. I mean how long can I force feed him? It's frustrating because I wish he could just tell me what is wrong and I could fix it!

2005-12-05 Thread wendy
Hi Renee,

Wow! You certainly stepped into a whole new world
taking on this feral colony. You found the right
place for encouragement and good info.

First, contact Best Friends (bestfriends.org) if you
don't get good response from the other feral rescue
groups (I'm sure you will though). I donate to Best
Friends, and my grandmother, who lives in NC, started
being overrun by feral cats that she was feeding.
When I went to visit her, she was having a difficult
time affording to feed these cats, not to mention the
physical aspect. So there was no way she could afford
to spay/neuter them all. I called Best Friends (in
Utah), not being sure that they would even be able to
help. I was shocked when they contacted a rescue
group in NC, who went to my grandmothers, trapped ALL
the cats (12 or so), took them to be fixed and clipped
their ears, and then brought them all back safely to
my grandmother's. I was astounded at the wonderful
response she had. They are a wonderful organization
and if you get a chance to check them out on the web,
do it. I'm taking my nephew there this summer to
volunteer in their sanctuary.

Second, I think the crawl space idea is a GREAT one!
But I did want to ask anyone out there if there are
any dangers to this? Hanging wires, pieces of metal,
etc.? In other words, does someone need to go in and
check the crawl space out or is it just simply empty
space?

Third, give your husband a great, big kiss! What a
wonderful man to go WORK and extra DAY just to feed a
colony of cats! I am just taken by that. My husband
wouldn't do that, although he is a wonderful man.
That's above and beyond!

Fourth, I have a feral kitty, Blackie, that has been
coming around since the middle of summer. He wouldn't
let any of us touch him for the longest, and just a
few days after my beloved Cricket passed away last
month, he allowed me to pet him. He was on a pillow
in our garage, where our outside kitties hang out
(there's a kitty door in the garage door), and I went
up to him slowly and started petting his ears. I
couldn't believe it. So there is hope for Emma. He's
still really skittish, but is allowing us to pet him
more. I need to take him to the vet, so we'll see
when that happens! lol

Last, I want to encourage you to continue doing the
good deed you have set yourself to do. Nina is right,
you CAN do it. There is a wonderful person here (I
think Terri, but could be wrong) who took in I think
250 Ragamuffins kitties from a breeder who wasn't a
very nice breeder (again, I could be wrong on the 250,
but it was a large number), and she just adopted out
her last 2 kitties. She is an inspiration to all of
us. I hope that gives you some encouragement, and
maybe she will email you and offer you some words of
advice for dealing with large numbers of kitties.

Good luck, and you'll be in my prayers!
:)

she pins him down, he's a whole lot better at fighting than she is and she
always ends up with scratches, a couple of bites, etc. You'd think she'd be

while you bathe them. Give lots of reassurance.

I don't deal with mats here much, and I usually comb
them out BEFORE any bath, because once you get mats wet, they get tighter, and
more difficult to remove. I do however have a favorite shampoo, It's made by
TropiClean, it's their Aloe Moist shampoo. They have a phone number:
1-800-542-7387 It's made right here in the USA in Missouri, it's natural,
environmentally safe, and NOT tested on animals. It smells GREAT, and in fact,
I have used it myself a few times (on my hair). They make a whole line of
products, and they all smell good, but I really like the Aloe Moist one,
because my cats tend towards dry skin, and this really works good to get the
dander out, and keep them moist.

Marissa,
Besides the Diarsanyl, I would give him some probiotics,
which are good bacteria for his gut. The Baytril probably wiped them all
out. The same companies that sell Diarsanyl online usually have probiotics
made for animals, like Benebac, but you can also just give him plain yogurt (1/4
teaspoon a day for a few days) or buy acidophilus at a health food store.

The only supplement I might give him at this point is
slippery elm, which soothes the GI system and is supposed to increase immunity
also. I would not start on any other supplements until his diarrhea clears
up. You want to keep what is going into him as simple as possible to help
clear that up. You may want to ask your vet about giving him W/D or I/D
Hills prescription food for a few days to see if it resolves the diarrhea.

Not interested in the canned food anymore, I think it's because he's afraid there's going to be nasty stuff in it since I tried to hide the meds in it. His poopies (that's the professional term we use around here) are becoming more solid, no more liquid poops. That's
happening slowly but surely and guess whatI moved the litterbox to where he kept going on the floor, and he's been using the litterbox CONSISTENTLY! He was just trying to tell me "THIS is where the potty should beif it's not where it should be, I'm goin here anyway" lol. I have to say I'm totally entertained by his bad manners. LOL. He begs for food WORSE than the dogs do! He stole a french fry from my plate! I sit at a snack table and eat since it's just me, and he reaches up with his paw and tries to knock it off the table. If he can't get it or I'm eating he just meows incessantly until i give him SOMETHING. And if I don't pay attention to his begging, he paws ME! Today he wanted biscuits. The cat is hilarious. He is so cuddly it's amazing. He needs a bath though. How would I do that? I know from experience that cats aren't too fond of baths (I used to work in a grooming department and have a NASTY scar from a cat who didn't want a
bath that day). Anyway, other than that, no other news except that I asked for the roomba for xmas. It just sounded so great. LOL. Happy Holidays everyone and hug your kitties for us here in furball wonderland. :)HugsRebecca

cats is definitely one of those things. therefore, my best answer to
this question is, whatever the really experienced cat groomer wants
to use!

we have a self-serve dog/cat wash facility an hour or so away: fully
equipped spaces to rent with all the accountrements (i guess fully
equipped implies that, tho, doesn't it...)--and, theoretcially,
trained professionals to save the human if required (good
first-aid kits?)

making friends with groomers is always a good thing to do! i
fostered/transported/placed 7 kitties that a groomer had rescued from
an abuse situation--free grooming for life! actually, just learning
the correct way to use clippers without being terrified has been the
biggest dividend

(how's big boy, btw?)

Not sure if they're toxic
Do you have a 24 hour vet near you to call?
If they give you NSAL Poison Control Toll Free #, there is a $25 or more
charge.

If you are really worried, you can induce vomiting with either, hydrogen
peroxide, or syrup of ipepac (sp?).
Also, you can try activated charcoal.

calling is the best option--some things can be made worse by inducing vomiting, and i, for one, can never remember which ones

Have you tested for Tritrichomonosis? The test is new, the new drug makes it

Re: Cat shampoo to recommend...

A great tool to use to safely cut out mats is a letter opener like this
one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007844NO/qid=1133837289/sr=1-14/ref=sr_1_14/002-6508072-7664811?%5Fencoding=UTF8v=glancen=1064954

You can slip it under the mat, and slide it through the mat, with the
plastic back next to the cat's skin. That will cut the mat in half down the
middle, then it will be easier to break it apart with a comb. Don't slice with
it like a knife cutting parallel to the skin, keep it at a 90 degree angle to
the cat's body at all times.

They also make dematting combs, but these are not as safe for amateur
groomers.
I prefer the short bladed matbreaker style for cats:
http://www.petco.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=155276cm_ven=nfgcm_cat=52cm_pla=155276cm_ite=5391581CMReferringUrl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.google.com%2fsearch%3fsourceid%3dnavclient%26gfns%3d1%26ie%3dUTF-8%26q%3dmatbreaker%2bcomb

There are quite a few detangler products out there, none of which I have
ever tried myself, here are a few:
