Anemia

2006-05-23 Thread Nicholena Rushton

Hello all:

I am not sure if my previous post went out correctly but if it did I have
an update on Ziggy and really need some help on what to do. Went to the
vet yesterday who ran Ziggy's blood work which showed him to be "moderately"
anemic. Vet immediately gave him a shot of immon regulin (I believe) and
then gave me predisone and and antibiotic along with a liquid appetite
stimulant. What his exact numbers were I am not sure as I was devastated
by what the vet said. Ziggy is still eating but is lethargic at times and
shows no interest in playing with any of his toys. Additionally, he
licksthe interior walls of my house intermittently and the marble
threshold b/w my hall and bath. I know I am in a daily fight for his
life but I just can not seem to stop thinking that he is losing his
battle. My vet has also ordered Interferon for me so that I can start a
regime of that. I don't know what else to do and I do not know if there is
any advice anyone can give me to try and ease my fears. I have lost sleep
over this for the past four nights (three when I didn't know what was going on
and now tonight). Will someone PLEASE help me? Thanks

Niki

I am thinking of
fostering a wonderful FELV+ young cat from the kill shelter I work with. She has
tested twice a faint positive using the EIisa test, but she had a URI both
times. I think I want to run a IFA test for her to make sure. Is there any
lab which is better than others?

Thanks,

I can't help you with the kittens and adoption (2 reasons - 1, I'm in Mississippi--not Kentucky, and 2, I'm allergic to most cats and cannot adopt one without having first been around it to see if I react or not since some aggravate my allergies more than others). However, I do have a 1 1/2 year old FeLV+ cat who's thriving right now. My holistic vet said the most important thing is to keep them healthy with a good diet (like Felidae or California Naturals) and to keep them happy and stress-free. For that reason, if I were you, I'd try to place the kittens together if possible, or at least split them 2 and 2 so they'll have littermates to play with . . .also get thm on good food.Sorry I couldn't be of more help.~Ashleigh[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm new, so here

My god, the numbers for 2005 and 2004 show a euthanasia rate
of about 50% In 2004 that was almost 25 EVERY DAY. This place must
employ a full time death squad. These guysare years away from
anything vaguely resembling "no-kill", they wouldn't even know how to
start.

Their IRS 990 form (income and expenses, available at www.guidestar.org ) shows that in 2004 their
income was over a million dollars more than their expenses and they had over 7
million in cash and other assets. Shows what you can do when running a
slaughterhouse. You'd think they might consider taking a few million and
building a larger facility so they wouldn't need to kill so many healthy and
adoptable animals to have room to take in more animals. They might also
want to consider a few more dollars on vet care as their kill rate for "medical
reasons" seems very high.

I work with a real no-kill shelter and we hardly ever put an
animal down except in extreme circumstances. Of course, we are always
broke and Tacoma has 7 million dollars.

Maybe if they spent that 7 million spaying and neutering strays, they wouldn't have so many end up being killed. Hm. Re: Anemia

2006-05-23 Thread Lernermichelle

Niki,
The things you are doing (steroids, immuno-regulin) are a good
start, but you need to find out what is causing the anemia. If it is lymphoma,
he will not get better without chemo (which might or might not put him into
remission). If it is hemobartonella, he needs doxicycline (and probably should
be on it just in case, as hemobart is hard to diagnose). If he is not producing
new red blood cells he may need Epogen.

I would recommend bringing him to an internist, if you can, at
a larger clinic or hospital, and seeing if the internist can run the proper
tests to try to see what is wrong. There have been several people on this list
who have successfully reversed anemia in their positive cats, usually through a
combo of Epogen, steroids, doxicycline, and pet tinic, as well as immuno-regulin
in one case (seemed to help a lot) and iron shots in another. My Simon had
very bad anemia from lymphoma in his bone marrow, and a combo of chemo and
strong steroids got his hematocrit almost back to normal for a couple of
months. So you need to find out what is wrong, or at least try to cover as
many bases as possible.

Re: Anemia

2006-05-23 Thread wendy
Niki,

When my Cricket was first diagnosed with anemia, I
felt the same way you did. This ominous feeling just
ate away at me the whole time he was ill. It was
horrible. But luckily, Ziggy is moderately anemic.
Cricket was severely anemic. You have some time and
might be able to turn him around with the right
information and some help from above. First, ask your
vet if he will consider Epogen, which has worked for
many kitties. It stimulates the body into making red
blood cells. Prednisone and ImmunoRegulin are also
right on track in helping to treat anemia. Interferon
may also help, but definitely ask him about the
Epogen. I would call the vet and ask what his exact
numbers are and let us know so we can better help
Ziggy. You need to know if he has regenerative or
non-regenerative anemia. Take care of yourself Niki.
If you get too stressed out, Ziggy will pick up on it,
and it will stress him out more, which will not help
him recover. Get some sleep even if you have to drink
some wine or take a sleep aid to get there. Eat to
keep your strength up. If you aren't rested or taken
care of, your mind won't be in good enough shape to
make good decisions for Ziggy. Don't be afraid to ask
for help or come her to vent or with questions. We
have all been in the same position and know how
devastated you feel. I hope this helps a little. Do
you have the kitty manual that we send out?

Absolutely, these kittens, IF they are positive, as
it's not always 100% that the kittens will pick up the
FeLV from mom in-utero or via grooming, may be able to
throw off the virus after time. The two key
elements in caring for FeLV kitties is to keep them
stress-free and to provide them with a good diet,
which should include supplements such as L-lysine and
Vitamin C. If all your other cats are adults, it's
very hard for them to contract FeLV from the kittens
unless they groom them.

Re: Pekoe is gone .....

2006-05-23 Thread Nina

Dear Marlene,
I can't express how sorry I am that Pekoe has gone to join Digby.  I
know how hard you worked and how much you hoped to find a way to help
him stay.  Hearing that he had passed stirred all the feelings of
promise and discouragement we had for feline interferon...  all the
searching, all the praying, in all that we try and fall short with.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but instead of sadness (which is my usual
first reaction to the devastating news that one of our babies has lost
his battle), I felt a blinding RAGE when reading your news.  It's a new
experience for me, I didn't know what to do with it.  I could feel
nothing but anger at my helplessness...  For the first time, along with
the sadness, I started to feel hope slip away.  What can I say?  All of
us, old timers and newcomers alike, put so much effort into battling
this insidious disease, trying to make a difference, trying to find a
cure...  The suffering and dismay tear at our hearts.  I started to
write to Michelle off list and it turned into a tirade at the
Universe.  Somehow, as I railed against the injustice and my feelings
of impotence, the voices of my Angels seemed to come through my
fingers, renewing my faith and talking me down from the ledge of my
hopelessness.  Thoughts of how we do make a difference, thoughts of all
the little ones that have had an opportunity to live their sweet short
lives, thoughts of how we on this beloved list support each other in
good times and bad, started to come through and push the anger aside.
There is so much that we have no control over, but we do have the power
to see the good in the world.  We do have the power to choose to
embrace the miracles, large and small, to hold them to our hearts to
help ease our moments of sorrow.  When I had finally typed myself out,
when the rage had subsided, I felt the cool clean breeze from my open
window.  It's such a beautiful day here in southern Cal.  It's been
rainy and overcast for days, but today is sunny and clean and
glorious.  I thought of Pekoe, free from all our earthly strife,
chasing butterflys with Digby in Heaven, bragging to the other fur kids
about how smart they had the been to choose you.  I started to
acknowledge once again, that with all the suffering, with all the
heartache, we share incredible beauty in this world.  We do have power,
even if it's simply the power of changing our perceptions.  You, and
all those of your kind, those of us that make this a better world for
our angels to live, love and enjoy the life they've been given, all of
those that cherish the moments of joy that we share in their presence
DO make a difference.  Pekoe was and continues to be protected in your
love, just as all our cherished gifts of love wrapped in fur are.
Whether our time with them is fleeting, or long, makes no difference.
Hold on to the love Marlene, hold tight to the memories of contentment
and happiness that you and your Angels share.  Pekoe has always been
grateful to you for recognizing just how special he is.  He and Digby
are together again and know that they couldn't have made a better
choice than sharing their lives with you.

Interferon dosing and vitamin C

2006-05-23 Thread Noelle Ehrenkaufer

Hi again,
I met with my vet and she put Loca on interferon,
vitamin C and vitamin E. My neighbor who works at a vet clinic was able to point
me to where I could buy the interferon and I got it today. Reading the document
wendy sent me it sounds like I should be giving her 30 IU a day. The bottle says
30 IU per ml, so that should be easy to figure out. Unfortunately, she is a
tough one to give medicine to. I know the idea is for it to absorb into the
membranes of her mouth an throat. Does anyone
have tips on thebest way to do this?
I have also read that some people give the interferon continuously and
others do7 days on, 7 days off. Any opinions on what I should do? Loca is
about 5 months, I just found out she tested positive for FeLV, but she is not
showing any symptoms at this point.
Thanks.

The interferon leaves the body very quickly so I see no reason to do 7 on 7
off.
I use it everyday.

I do daily interferon. I'm told that for FELV cats, one theory is
that they don't produce enough interferon. So doesn't make sense to
do the on and off.

Just what I've heard and practiced, there's so much that we really
don't know about FELV.

(MK thinks that Pet Tinic is evil but that is another story). The first thing I noticed the day of her first shot was that her appetite increased.Today we got a good report from the vet. She's gained 1/4th lbs in one week - up to 8lbs and
her 3rd eyelid is just barely showing sometimes in one eye.I don't know if these positive indicators are due to the Acemannan, the antibiotic, the iron...or simply the unpredictable nature of the disease - but we'll take any and all improvement we can manage.MK is too traumatized by Pet Tinic (she takes liquid antibiotics beautifully though)...so we've stopped that and now every Friday when we go for a shot of Acemannan, we get a vitamin B12 shot as well. We've stopped the antibiotics for now(she took them a week and a half) to see how she does..and if she shows any lethargy or signs that she doesn't feel well, we'll start back. She's perkier - more energetic...tail straight up in the air ready to butt her head under your hand or claim you as her property. One day at a time. I'm grateful this is a good day.

very late (and will continue to be late. it's last week of school.) I'm in atlanta suburb. I'm new to this list, so if I make a mistake, please let me know. I was referred here for help with the following situation:We took in an felv cat 3 weeks ago because a man had brought him to our local vet's (close to Atlanta, GA) with a story about howhe was coming into his yard. He wantedan appointment for a check-up, shots, etc. He handed the cat to the receptionist and went out to his car to
"get his wallet". Then he drove away, never to be seen again. The receptionist called us because we are bigcat people, and some of the other workers at her offcie were talking about calling animal control to come take him away. We said yes, we'd take him in. In the meantime, she had him tested, and he came up positive. The policy at this vet's is automatic euthanasia. I told her to stop them--I would find him placement somehow. They almost didn't let us take him out of there, but finally relented. So here we are 3 weeks later. He is living in our basement, healthy as a horse, but lonely. We had him fixed, got him his shots, and now need only to find him a home. He cries for us to come down and spend time with him. We come down as often as possible, but sincewe have a whole houseful of felines upstairs that require many hours of care,it's difficult. Obviously, this is no way for him to
live.If anyone out there is considering taking in a second cat, or maybe taking on another after a loss, please let us know. This cat is adorable, and is a wonderful companion. First and foremost thank you all for providing insight. Ziggy is
"moderately anemic" after my vet took his blood sample. He has prescribed
him Orbax (I believe that is a antibiotic); Winstrol V to help produce more
blood cells and Hi Vite vitamin liquid to give him more nurishment. The
one good thing I guess is that he does still have an appetite and is eating
albiet not like he used to. He is still licking things but not as much as
before although he is now preferring to stay in the basement and not around my
husband or I, which is a little disconcerting and has me a bit concerned.
I was hoping for a different result from the blood work but at least I know what
is going on now. He has to go back in a week for a report blood work and
to see ifthere is improvement. He is also getting fresh turkey,
which he loves and so far it has been useful in getting his meds into him
(although I seem to be the bad guy afterwards as I think he realizes I tricked
him... I am also startinghim on Interferon A as soon as my vet gets it in
(which should be tomorrow). I just wish I could have picked up on this
sooner than I did and perhaps I could have nipped it in the bud right from the
get go so of course I am blaming myself. Is there any other advice or
anything else I should belooking at giving him as a supplement or
alternative treatment? Also, does anyone know what Kerry Roach was
giving Bandy when he had come up anemic? The one good thing is my vet is
willing to work with me and try whatever is necessary to help Ziggy get
better. I also have one other question and then I will cut this off as it
is getting long but does anyone have any experience on how long it could take to
see improvement? Like I said earlier I wanted a miracle right then and
there in the vets office and for Ziggy to be his old self even before we left
but I knowit may take some time I am just wondering how long? Thanks
again for everything and all of the kind words of encouragement. Please
keep Ziggy in your prayers as I do each of your little angels

Hi Niki No need to apologize---ask as
many Qs as you need to, and whenever they come to mind. We're all
here to help you/each other! I had a chance to
look at Frazier's book on feeding kittens, and she says that once
weaned (as Ziggy is) a kitten "can eat the same food formula
you feed any healthy cat." She also says that "this is definitely the
time for an extra mineral vitamin supplement. Kittens need more of
every nutrient to help their bodies manufacture strong muscles
and bones." In her FELV section, where she gives
detailed recommendations for diet, including giving Vita Min
Mix, there is nothing in it about not giving to kittens. So I think
it's safe to say Ziggy will benefit from it. Also,
here's what she says about the possible outcomes after a negative cat
  comes into contact

  Niki,
The things you are doing (steroids, immuno-regulin) are a
good start, but you need to find out what is causing the anemia. If it is
lymphoma, he will not get better without chemo (which might or might not put
him into remission). If it is hemobartonella, he needs doxicycline (and
probably should be on it just in case, as hemobart is hard to diagnose). If he
is not producing new red blood cells he may need Epogen.

I would recommend bringing him to an internist, if you can,
at a larger clinic or hospital, and seeing if the internist can run the proper
tests to try to see what is wrong. There have been several people on this list
who have successfully reversed anemia in their positive cats, usually through
a combo of Epogen, steroids, doxicycline, and pet tinic, as well as
immuno-regulin in one case (seemed to help a lot) and iron shots in
another. My Simon had very bad anemia from lymphoma in his bone marrow,
and a combo of chemo and strong steroids got his hematocrit almost back to
normal for a couple of months. So you need to find out what is wrong, or
at least try to cover as many bases as possible.

"moderately" anemic. Vet immediately gave him a shot of immon regulin

Re: New to group/ Conflicting information

2006-05-23 Thread jenmeyer
Awww, what a sweetheart! :) I wonder if the spasms she's
experiencing aren't just a part of the healing process? We have a girl,
Maggie, who showed up at my office emaciated and with an obvious injury
to her spine near her pelvis. She could walk okay but climbing was out
of the question! She had to pull herself onto surfaces and her tail was
limp. The vet took x-rays which gave us an idea of what may have
happened...it was obviously an older injury...it looked as though she
may have been crushed under a garage door or perhaps hit by a car! I
thought for sure her tail would have to be amputated, but 'lo and
behold, with good food, proper care and lots of love, she was able to
start lifting her tail after about a week or so! She's also regained
all of her jumping abilities and thensome (I can't believe what she can
get herself on top of)!

But the reason I mention healing process spasms is because I noticed
as Maggie was healing that she was licking both sides of her spine near
the injury to the point that she had two little bald spots on her back!
;) I couldn't help but wonder if the nerves were a little tingly and
that was bothering her...anyway, she stopped over time and is now
running/jumping circles around the others. Her tail is still limp
towards the end, but she's able to fully lift the base which certainly
gives her a unique look! :)

So to your question! :) I think the general consensus is that you wait
3 months and retest in case she was newly infected and hasn't had a
chance to show up on a test, yet. I wouldn't be surprised, either, if
she turns up negative, again! I don't think FeLV is as contagious as
once thought, especially among the healthy, adult cat crowd. Kittens
seem to be the most susceptible as their immune systems aren't quite up
to par yet!

Hope this helps! Give Angel a big smooch from me!
