I felt that same way about Pippin when I first brought her home. I was just thrilled when she had her first bowel movement in her box! lol I wish you much happiness ahead.Gina Leslie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Hi everyone,So much sad news on this list this week. Reading about your losses really made me face my fears about adoptinga kitten, but I had to laugh at myselfafter I was so solemn driving to the humane society, and then when I saw her, I couldn't wait to tell her that she was going home, I was so filled with glee. I've been absolutely delighted with every little thing she does. I can only imagine what I'll be like as a mom if I get this excited over a kitten's first poo (and not a first poo ever, just a first poo in my litterbox). Whoever just recently said that realistic expectation don't help that much in the end is certainly right. I've been trying to keep myself steady, but man does your heart fill up fast. I hope that updating you all helps those of you that have just lost one (or two) of your friends. I hope that they are here with my new one, telling her about all the wonderful things they've learned from you all.So I brought home mylittle girl kittenlast night. She isvery mature. She wasn't shy at all on the way home, batting around her new collar and tags in the Humane Society carrier. She's curious, but cautious in her new room (the bathroom) at my apartment. So many different noises and tectures and funny business going on in there. She will watch the water dribbling from the faucet with fascination, but prefers to sit at one end of the bath tub and watch it from far away, or from the edge looking down at it. She observes everything and is a calm 2-month old, but still plays with balls and chases the laser light. She seems to like sitting on the floor and being rubbed more than sitting onmy lap and being rubbed, but when I stand and pay attention to something else (like brushingmy teeth) she'll come and stand on my feet and stretch up against my leg for attention. She trills and we've had good conversations about the state of things so far. She likes to curl up in the towel with my scent that I bunched up in a tight place for her, I imagine that after the constant noise of the humane society, a bit of quiet is a good, new thing. She and Satchmo batted paws under the door. He is very curious as to who is behind there and she is very eager to meet him. They've just been shadowdancing so far, but I think that it will be a smooth transition. Her appetite seems good, though I'm like a grandmother, she can't eat enough as far as I'm concerned. She's small, maybe a couple of pounds, and has a nice little round belly. Her eyes are clear and her breathing sounds good, but sometimes she'll...um, cough for lack of a better word. It's kind of like a hork. But no vomiting. Like her breath gets caught suddenly, or something, do you know what I'm talking about? I've got her first vet appt set up for Friday, so we'll see what they say - she doesn't feel feverish (cool ears/paw pads). I'd like to wait until after that to do the full cat to cat introduction, but it's hard when you know that they want to meet. They have seen each other and Satch stretches out a few feet away from his side of the bathroom door, just watching, waiting. What do you think? Like I said, clean, dry eyes and nose - but...I don't know how to describe it. A very dry cough?, a backwords cough like dogs get sometimes? but it doesn't continue for long, just a couple ofsmall bursts. I could take her temp as a deciding factor to see if she's running a little higher than normal. I'm thinking of a few names - I vacillate between something big and fierce (Godzilla) and something sweet and fleeting (Sparrow). Godzilla would really give the leukemia virus, or any other opportunistic buggers, something to think about, and she could be Zill, or Zilly, for short. But Sparrow would be like a little bird, would capitalize on her trill, and I could call her Little Bird. And then there's Capt. Jack Sparrow. Leslie, I had to mention something to you about your kitten'scough. If it continues, please don't let it go. I had a kitten who had a cough... took her to the vet he diagnosed her with Asthma. I thought it was odd... we already have an asthmatic cat, what were the chances of two?! Anyway, the coughing continued and one night we went to bed and got up the next morning and found her. Not knowing what killed her, we took her toour vet for necropsy and found out she had heartworms. The vet tried to tell us there was nothing we could have done, she had them when we got her... but had we known earlier, there are some things you can do to make survival more viable. Your kitty's cough could be from the surgery... but if it continues, please have her tested for heartworms... I'll miss Salem until the day I die... and all I can do now is make others aware of it. Re: Update (long)
Leslie, thank you for sharing such wonderful news - she sounds absolutely delightful! I wouldn't be overly worried about that "hork" - that's exactly what it could be, but I think you're right to wait for full contact until after the vet. You aren't going to believe this, but when she gets to be about six months old, her energy levels will SKYROCKET - really an amazing thing when you've got 2 that age.. I remember those days well! To Lance Re: Close Encounter between a pos. and a neg.
Lance, I just read this and I'm sure it's too late for my opinion, but I don't think you had anything to worry about at all. The virus is just not that easy to spread from what we can tell. How did your Callie fare after surgery? :) Wendy --- Lance [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi everyone I hope this is just me being paranoid. It's easy to be paranoid when dealing with FeLV+, at least for me. As some of you may recall, my Ember is FeLV+, and my mom picked up a negative kitten (Callie) a number of months ago. Ember still lives in my room, so she is isolated from the negs of the house. Yesterday, I opened my door to bring in food, and Ember started out. I was able to stop her for a bit, but I was holding her in by pressing her with my leg against the door frame, which is something I really didn't want to do. She got out and escaped part of the way down the hall before being chased by Callie the kitten. Callie wants to play with everyone, and she tried to jump on Ember. When Ember ended up cornered at the end of the hall, she let out a nice hiss. Fortunately, she was facing away from Callie when she did this. I rounded up Ember and got her back into my room. Callie, I'm sure, was disappointed. Most of you probably think this doesn't sound like a big deal, and it might not be. Callie has had all of her FeLV+ vax including boosters. She should be good for one year. My concern is that Callie is going in tomorrow to be spayed, and that if she even got the tiniest bit of virus into her system, the immune suppression that will result from the surgery might give it some advantage that we don't want it to have. Do you think there is any cause for concern, based on your own anecdotal experiences? Should we not have the surgery tomorrow? My mom is in a hurry to get her spayed, as Callie's come into a sort of pseudo heat two times, and she's just turned five months old. Your thoughts? Lance __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: Question about red gums
Hi Karen, Gingivitis is a common symptom with our felv babies. I got an oral rinse from the vet and used to dilute it with water and Q-tip it over their gums, (one quarter of their mouth eod or so). I figured it was gentler on their sore gums than brushing and hoped that the antibacterial was helping keep them healthier. I hadn't heard about CoQ10 being good for that. Someone once cautioned about stopping the use of CoQ10 once you start using it regularly, but that was for a heart condition. I did add it to the sups my guys got. You might want to do some research on it, (if you do, let us know what you find out). Nina kandbz_ mom wrote: Good Morning, Everyone! I noticed last night that Angel's gums are red, but not really swollen (in several places). I was reading on the internet that Periodontal Disease is associated with Felv. Basically, everything I read said that I should brush her teeth to keep the gums healthy. Is there more to it than that? Do I need to take her to a vet for meds? Any advice would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks, Karen
Kat and Lenore
Aww Kat, the visual of Lenore cuddled up with your other cats was so sweet. It kills me when people say cats aren't social. It's so not true! They may not be pack animals, but they definitely are happier being part of a family and every normal being needs to be touched. You're such a good human to accept Leonore for who she is and understand her, um, reserve, when it comes to you. Bless you my dear, Nina Kat wrote: I also have a very feral black kitty, named Lenore (after the lady in Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven). I had her in a home made Kitty Kastle (roughly 6 foot by 6 foot by 2 feet wide with plenty of platforms) for about a year. She never tamed down and would just as soon rip my face off every time I tried to feed her/clean the litter/etc. I finally just bit the bullet and let her out to intermingle with the other cats. It took several months before she would even let me see her, but now she will sit there and stare me down when I enter the room. I still can't touch her, but she has established herself with the other cats and I will find her sleeping curled up with them alot. Kat (Mew Jersey)
Re: Kiko and Mickey
How ya' doing Lori? What a lovely picture you paint of Kiko. There's something so special about these guys, isn't there? I too have a big white boy named Kimba Cat. He's a love muffin too. He usually sits on my lap obstructing my fingers while I type. Schnauzers can be the nicest dogs, they have big dog attitude in little dog bodies and are so devoted and smart. It's so hard to get used to not having their physical presence. They are still with you though. Have you been talking to them? Blessings to you in your grief, Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi nina, my name is lori. I just lost my two precious angels. Kiko was a big white cat, very loveable just like an angel. He would have to hug you when he slept next to you. I remember when I would be sitting at my computer, he would come behind me and hug me, he would wrap his arms around my neck and kiss me. Yesterday I had to decide with my vets advice, whether I had to do the unthinkable. He said he was already suffering, I told him I loved him and asked my friend the vet assistant if she could be there for him to comfort him and she was. I could not handle it when I was there. Mickey was our beloved miniature schnauzer, he was the bravest little man you would ever see. He was comical, the cats and mickey would wrestle all the time. His favorite in the family was my mom, I know he loved us all but my mom was his love. He would let out a big cry when he would hear my mom arrive home. I miss them so much
Re: To Lance Re: Close Encounter between a pos. and a neg.
Dear Lance, I also don't think you have to worry, but you may want to get your kitty re-tested after awhile. As far as I know, the virus can be spread by saliva (mutual grooming, using the same food dishes, bites) or through using the same litter boxes. But the virus only lives a short time in the open air. Three of my six cats become infected with the virus when I brought home a kitten who initially tested negative on the ELISA (I'm told this is rare, more often a young kitten will test positive then negative if the mother was positive). I had all the cats tested: three tested positive, one threw off the virus and two did not; they became ill and died within two years. Three others tested negative and are fine. None of my cats had been vaccinated against FELV - they are indoor cats and I had not mixed my new kitten with them until he was tested. And then we had that rare inaccurate test result. I know some list members do mix their cats - I assume the negative kitties are all vaccinated. So - I just thought I would add my experience to the mix. Cypro in transdermal for appetite
Diane, I've used the Cypro in transdermal form. Ask the vet about it instead of something else to force down Patches' mouth. Precious Pets, Prayers for the tiny little one's appetite to improve and put some weight on those tiny bones quickly. They're so darling and helpless at that age. I just trapped a little 5 week old that I'm assuming someone dumped near a new home development. He was so tiny that he didn't weigh enough to trip the trap. I had to use an empty water bottle and shoelaces to drop the door by remote control, but I got him. How can anyone abandon such little itty bitties like that? RE: As always, Patches
I've just talked to our vet, who wants us to come in and give Patches some fluids and a vitamin B injection before she prescribes an appetite stimulant. Luckily they're open till 6:30 today, and the vet tech can do this. We've tried to keep an eye on his hydration, and WE haven't noticed any tenting in his skin, but he's fluffy and maybe we missed something. We will be taking a trip to the grocery store for Fancy Feast and sour cream (clerk is gonna think one of us is hellaciously pregnant) and we're going to bring a radio into the room -- I'm thinking we're partly treating depression on top of everything else -- Patches was such a people-lover when he got here, and with our schedules and him having to stay behind a door, it must be hard on him. RE: As always, Patches
I hope Patches starts feeling better, cats are do diff. from dogs when it comes to eating, etc. I hope Fancy Feast or one of the other things mentioned works. Usually, when they go off their feed, it takes them a little while before they really eat well again (assuming you can get him eating). I'd just put a little out at a time bec. fresh seems to work best. Also, if depression is part of this, sometimes a good dose of catnip, will cheer them up! Good luck. PS--they now have cat and dog gravy which might tempt Patches, too. Re: Update (long)
Hi everyone, Umm, sigh, bad news. Not the worst, but 24 hours are not enough for a bad turn! Anyway, when I got home yesterday things had deteriorated. She was having trouble breathing, was running a temp (only getting a partial flow through her nose and needing to open her mouth a little to compensate), and wasn't interested in food. She's alert still and moving around, but only out of necessity, though I could get some interest in the laser pointer. I don't know if it's a cold that is internal - it's like she needs an expectorant. There was a URI going around the Humane Society (when isn't there), so I feel like that's the most logical cause, but her eyes are still clear and her nose isn't runny - it's not sneezing, but coughing of sorts, but definitely respiratory. I tried running a bath to get some humidity in the air, but that didn't seem to affect the breathing and it just made her stretch out like she was hot. As it so happened, I was meeting my vet for a drink last night (I'm thinking of going into veterinary medecine as career #2 and she'd agreed to let me interview her). She was most concerned with the not eating and recommended that I bring her in today instead of Friday (she agreed to rearrange her schedule to fit us in - very nice of her), and to pick up baby food to syringe-feed on the way home. She was in the same state when I got home and I tried to put a 1/3 of the baby food in her. Pretty successful. I also got a ear bulb to maybe get some stuff out of her nose, but like I said, nothing is visibly coming out, so I only try this sporadically. A couple of times, I've gotten a tiny bit of yellow mucus. I stayed up with her until 1 this morning, just petting her, trying to take her mind off of things. This morning, more baby food for 15 minutes, then two more small syringes at 10:30 (when I got home between class and work). We'll go into the vet at 3pm. Maggie, to answer you, she was spayed, but within the last couple of weeks (I don't remember the spay date, but the stitch removal was 8/1). That trachea thing sounds feasible, purring seemed to trigger a cough, and she hasn't been purring since yesterday morning, though with eye blinks and the leaning of her body she seems to beenjoying the cheek scratches and body rubbing. Even if she doesn't have a URI, she has some sort of infection, would this jive with what you're talking about? Would it happena couple of weeks after the spay? From her mouth breathing, her breath smells...not good. The last time that I smelled that bitter, moist smell, the circumstances were very sad. I hope that she can pull through this. She's a dear little thing and has so much more fun to have here! She seems uncomfortable, but steady. I'm doing okay psychologically, but the force feeding does wear on a person if it's long term, and keeping Satch at bay hurts because I want him to understand that I'm not now spending more time in with the new one for any other reason than she's in trouble. And then when I emerge, I want to wash up before petting him, which he thinks is just, plain mean. :) I'll let you know how the vet goes. Leslie
Re: Update (long)
Oh Leslie, I can't believe she's having troubles so soon. It does make sense that she's in a fragile state after being in a shelter situation though. My prayers are with you that she's able to overcome this very soon. When you syringe feed her, are you giving her an opportunity to eat by herself after the first little bit in her mouth. Does she seem to have an appetite at all? If she can't smell, then letting her know how yummy the baby food is might get her started without you having to syringe the whole amount. Maybe warm it first to bring out the aroma? People on the list have suggested a product for human infants called Little Noses. I've never used it, but I think someone said they wet a Q-tip and cleaned the outside of the kitties nose with it. Maybe a drop in each nostril will bring some temp relief. If it's dry and crusty, maybe a touch of vasiline on each nostril would help. Please do let us know what the vet has to say. Are you giving her lysine? Is she on abx? Hugs, Nina Leslie wrote: Hi everyone, Umm, sigh, bad news. Not the worst, but 24 hours are not enough for a bad turn! Anyway, when I got home yesterday things had deteriorated. Depending on what the problem is, dexamethasone, a strong injectible steroid, can really help with energy and appetite. The only things it would be bad for, I think, are kidney failure or systemic infection. Michelle

Bandy and Inky update
Hi all, I wanted you all to know that Inky is 20 now..this is his birthday week...He is doing ok, eating good. I guess the hyperT keeps him so thin...He is on a small dose of tapazole now so maybe it will help..He still comes and jumps on my computer table with me and gets up on the bath tub. Bandy and the ringworm are getting better finally...He is on the oral med though. I really hated that, but after 31/2 months of fighting it, I had to do something else..His hair is growing back and he is looking like a real kitty again..I have him on 1/2 the dose. After the vet
Just back from the vet now. Thank you all for your suggestions. The doctor did not say what she thought it was specifically, more than an infection. She was dismayed that the Humane Society had fully vaccinated her, spayed her, and treated her for fleaswith her comprised system. Her lungs sounded clear, but again, it was obvious that her breathing was obstructed. Her temp was down to 102 (when I took it yesterday, it could have been higher because she'd just come out of her cozy sleeping place). She said that her eyes looked good. She prescribed Clavamox for a week, but to keep her updated as to whether there was improvement on it. At my request, she looked into Interferon and thinks that it's a good thing to start in on once we get her back to eating on her own and stable. Same thing with the Lysine andthe Immune Support supplement that Satch takes, she doesn't want to throw too much at her at once. They also rehydrated her. That's about it, we'll see how the Clavamox does, I hope that she starts perking up to food again on her own soon, because I hate poking the poor thing. How much should I make sure that she gets a day? And over how many feedings a day? Thanks, Leslie

Re: Check out Cat Health: Household Medications for Cats
what's scary about that page is that near the top they say that kaopectate is acceptable, but if you scroll all the way down to the last section, they say NOT to use it. (the latter info is correct; you can get generic kaolin pectate which does NOT have the new formulation that is harmful to cats.) i've used pediatric benadryl for years with kitties who have flea allergies, or those who get short-term hay-fever type symptoms in the spring and fall, tho at a much smaller dosage than mentioned here. still interesting, tho i'd probably check some other sources for dosages, considering the misinformation re: kaopectate MC On 8/10/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Click here: Cat Health: Household Medications for Cats another... see my other note--you can order straight kaolin pectate, which is safe; it doesn't have the new, improved ingredients in kaopectate that are dangerous to cats. my vet gets it for me when i need it, but i expect you could probably order it at a drugstore. Re: Update (long)
Moogie fell in the bathtub with me on several occasions, Doobie's fallen in once, and my Do-Dah fell in once too,LOL! They all seem to LOVE to drink my dirty bath water, it's like "Yummy! Mommy juice!", or something. Never had one fall in a toilet though. We have to keep the lid down anyways now-a-days, since Doobie insists on pulling down everything from the shelf over the toilet, especially rolls of toilet paper. After digging a few soggy, nasty, putrid full rolls of toilet paper out of the bowl, it now stays DOWN! Good luck with your new baby, the cough is probably nothing, maybe a slight URI from the shelter, or even hairballs. Just to be safe, have your vet listen for heart murmurs, and test for heartworms. Heart problems are a number 1 cause of dry sounding coughs. Re: Question about red gums
Well, it could be stomatitis, which brushing wont help. A vet visit would be a good idea. Stomatitis is more common in FIV+ cats than in FELV+ cats. The wonderful people on the FIVCATS2 group on yahoogroups would be a great source for gum issue questions, they've all gone through it there. Foster Smith carries a good oral rinse that you can swab on (and special dental swabs): http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=14657N=2002+22759 Luckily, all my cats are blessed with good mouths, so I can't advise you much on this topic, no personal experience. Wouldn't Lysine be a good supplement for dental concerns too? My cats just LOVE these Feline Greenies treats, though I only give three at a time max per cat per day, because the DOG greenies have been causing intestinal blockages in dogs, so I don't want to take any chances: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=13597N=2002+22759 Phaewryn PLEASE Adopt a cat from Little Cheetah Cat Rescue!!! http://ucat.us/adopt.html DONATE: We could really use a power saw (for construction), a digital camera (for pictures) and HOMES for CATS! -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
