Hi Giselle, I'm sorry that you are having to go through this. First thing, and I know this is hard... DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF. I fully understand that is the first thing we tend to do, but knowing the way you love her, it is not warranted. You want the best for her, she knows it and so do we. Second, one way to know if she is dehydrated is to pinch her scruff. If it is slow to return to normal, definitely get her subQ fluid at the vet and have them show you how to do it. When dehydrated, cats feel headachy, their electrolytes get out of whack and they don't want to eat or be messed with. SubQ fluids will address this. Third and most important, listen to the folks here. I am new to this group and I still have a lot to learn. These folks have experience that I continue to take with me to my vet. If he decided not to have an open mind, I would go elsewhere. From your writing, I don't know if the vet you saw is at your regular veterinary office, but with the reaction you had, you should not have any qualms changing to another and you should definitely let her know why you did. These guys definitely need a sympathetic doctor who understands and takes into account all aspects of this disease. This woman basically shrugged when I asked about courses of treatment (like, why bother?) for a FeLV cat who might have anemia. Bottom line: I'm terrified about Pixie and don't know what to do to help her recover. She's my second cat ever, and first cat I've been primary caregiver to. I feel guilty about going away at all last week, but she had been OK on previous occasions when I travelled. Giselle, you have received some good advise. Pixie is probably dehydrated which could also make her weak. Sub Q fluids could help. Also sounds like she is anemic. Your vet can give her a B12 shot which might help. You can add some Super B Complex, B12 and folic acid to the food slurry you are syringe feeding her. Please continue to syringe feed her until you get a dx from the vet. Some vets just don't even try to help a positive kitty. I lost my wonderful Dixie Louise Doodle Katt after 3 years. She came out of a pine thicket (country equivalent of street). She was full grown and, until a few days before she left, I thought she had beaten it. There were short/little problems but nothing that couldn't happen with the healthiest cat who had lived on her own for a while/forever. I gave her my heart and I would not trade one second of time with her for anything. Not even those awful last few minutes as she left this world beside me as I was driving her home from the vets'. You know that you are not alone in your pain. I doubt that is overly helpful at this minute but everyone who has been there knows how awful it is. And you have been there so often and given so very much to these wonderful little ones. Please let your heart heal and expand to include more of them. Street/pine thicket cats/kittens have such a hard time and, if they have any health problems they have little chance unless someone can put the pain on hold and love and care for them during the time they have. She may need a transfusion if she is anemic, if it is bad enough and then she may need to be on epogen (procrit, or ansarep) both also choices for anemia. Bailey was anemic and we turned it around with epogen and prednisolone. She may also want to put her on doxocycline in case she has hemobartonella, a parasite that will cause anemia and is VERY hard to test for. I personally will and have put a cat on doxy, especially a FeLV+ cat even if they test negative for it to be on the safe side, it won't hurt them if they don't have it but may save them if they test negative and do have it. Bailey was on it for 5 weeks even though he tested negative several times. Amy, I am so sorry you lost Zman. We lost a 9 month old FelV kitten a few mohths ago, and it is so awful to lose an especially sweet cat when they are so young. Thank you for holding paws when he left you. Our mitty died in our arms being loved til the end, but it doesn't make it any easier to loose them. Giselle, Leaving aside any other diagnosis, and given that you believe she hasn't drunk water for days, Pixie sounds at the very least dehydrated. I am NOT a vet but my advice is, arrange as fast as possible ---now--today---for her to be checked for dehydration and given fluids as necessary. Sub-cutaneous fluid will immediately help a dehydrated cat feel better in a way that mere drinking water cannot do. Second, find a responsive and supportive vet--a vet who understands that FeLV cats are not second-class cats. I would run a mile (and have done) in the opposite direction from one who is clearly so uncaring. Pixie and you deserve much better. (If she will need further sub-Qs--hydration sessions-- get the (new) vet or vet's tech to show you how it's done--it's easy, and a good vet clinic will be happy to show you (that's how I learned--my vet pushed me into it, thank goodness). Can you find an ER vet? I am glad you are syringe feeding her. Are you able to get into her the normal amount of food she would eat in a day? You might want to join feline assisted feeding yahoo group. Cats can go into liver failure after only 48 hours without their normal food intake. When my cats have started the fast breathing it has been very serious. Normal BPM is around 25. If she is having trouble breathing she may not want to eat. Good luck. Pls keep us posted. Hello Giselle, I took Puma (4 or 5-year old male FeLV+) to a vet for blood test one day. Then, a several days later, he stopped eating. He didn't eat for a couple days. His ears and gums looked pale.
