I have an FeLV kitty that out of the blue one day couldn't stand up.  She 
leaned and fell to the right.  If I leaned her up against an ottoman, she could 
walk in a circle clock-wise, but if she moved away from the ottoman, she fell 
down.  The veterinarian had no idea what it was, and attributed it to the 
leukemia and gave me a sad prognosis.  That was three years ago.  She still has 
a little bit of balance problem, but compensates for it by standing in what we 
call her ballet first position.  We still don't know what it was, but I hope 
your little one has as much of a turn around as Eliza Jane has had.

Oh - we went to see the opthalmologist about her uveitis.  He gave her 
azithromycin (sp?) and two kinds of eye drops.  It was prednisolone and 
neomycin eye drops.  It still hasn't gone away.  He said it could be anything, 
especially since she has FeLV, but the treatment was the same so we didn't 
waste money doing any further testing on her.  The uveitis has gotten better 
but it hasn't completely gone away and there's still some swelling behind her 
eye.  It's not nearly as red or painful anymore.

I've never heard of CH, thanks for the info. Diabetes is not good even though 
it's treatable. I do hope that you get more blood work done even though you 
stated the bloodwork was okay a couple of months ago. Have you noticed an 
increase in fluids or urination? Keep us posted, I will be thinking of you. You 
have helped me in so many ways in the past. 
 
What meds did your vet give for the uveitis?

I too am new to this disease and discussion site, but unfortunately am having 
to take a crash course for multiple cats that I rescued from a dire situation 
last summer.  
 
I thought I would send this website along.  I don't know what they might have 
to offer, but they do have a compounding section and say they can compound 
discontinued and unavailable drugs.

Charlotte has just passed away.
I came home from work, went into her room and she was lying on her side, crying 
and breathing heavily. I ran and let my dogs out, came back to her and held her 
for what turned out to be about 4 hours. She gradually slowed down, but was 
responding to my voice for quite a while. Eventually that stopped and I knew 
she was probably unconscious. She passed at the stroke of midnight, and I know 
it sounds crazy, but I immediately felt so calm - I can only explain it by 
saying that as soon as she died I physically felt her suffering end. It was so 
strange. I am sitting here crying as I write this even though I know it's 
better and she won't be in pain any more. But she'd been doing so well and 
eating like a pig. Just this morning she was stuffing her face with chicken. So 
I thought that maybe I could have her with me for just a while longer, and just 
maybe she'd be one who survived despite the odds. Guess I was wrong. I hate 
this disease.

[Felvtalk] Zuckerman has crossed

My Zman lost his fight today.  He is my 6th in the past 9 months.  I know that 
it is to be expected when you take in sickly street kids, but it doesn't help 
with the pain of losing any one of these wonderful creatures.  .
 
Zuckerman was a 2 week old kitten with a horrible URI when I found him.  He 
quickly became a momma's boy, going to work with me during the day and holding 
paws through the carrier door at night.
 
Once old enough to graduate from the carrier, he became quite the snuggler, 
curling up at my neck during the night.  He loved to suckle earlobes and would 
launch himself off a piece of furniture onto any unsuspecting person who 
happened by in order to attach himself to one.  I told him that he would have 
to stop because we couldn't have a 12 pound adult "catapulting" himself onto 
everyone.  Guess I don't have to worry about that now, he was only 8 months old 
and less than 4 pounds at the end.  
 
We were holding paws when he left.
 
It's been said before by all of us and unfortunately I know it will be said 
many more times, but I hate this freaking disease.

too many of them do.  It does seem that those that die young are extra 
wonderful.  I am happy that little Laura had a life full of love.  Know that

One week ago today I had to let Laura go, she was losing the fight.  She had 
been acting "off" for about a month, we took her to see my vet and her labs 
were awful.  We tried a course of Pred, and did get a small rally, but at the 
beginning of last week she started fading again, we could tell it was time.
 
I miss her immensely, she was the sweetest girl, she would have been three on 
June 2.  I really hate this disease, it robs our young kitties of life, and 
there is no hope.

Aw Sharyl,  I'm so sorry.  CJ was the same age and came from dire circumstances 
as did my Zuckerman. 
 
I understand the attachment that some make directly to the heart.  We love them 
all but some do seem to become a part of us.  I know this is still too fresh to 
appreciate, but CJ died knowing pure love and neck snuggles and I am so happy 
you were there to intervene last summer.  Thank you for that.

I had to have CJ (Captain Jack Sparrow) PTS this morning.  I had taken him to 
the vet Monday and she dx anemia from the FeLV.  In spite of assist feeding and 
B12 supplements he faded.  Went downhill fast Friday and showed signs of 
distress Friday night.  With the holiday week end I just couldn't wait any 
longer.

CJ was one of 4 dumpster babies I rescued last summer.  They were just 4 weeks 
old.  I have since TNR'd their Momma.  CJ was the loving-est little boy.  He 
would sleep under my chin and purr me to sleep every night.  No idea how I'll 
get to sleep tonight.  Every time I sat down he was in my lap for hugs and 
petting.  Out of all the cats I've had he was the sweetest. 

I know he is in a better place.  It's just hard to lose any of them but even 
harder with the special ones.  I just have Mattie, who is blind, left out of 
this litter.  She is my adventurer.  Goes where no kitty in their right mind 
would go.  She is also FeLV+ and currently asymptomatic.   I pray I'll have her 
for a long time.

Let me add my thanks to everyone.

We got Boscoe to Char and Michael yesterday afternoon.  He was GREAT on the 
long car ride.  Even though we set up the back seat for him, he rode most of 
the way on my lap or on the driver's lap, or on the armrest between us.  He was 
looking out the window not scared at all.  He did go in the back once to use 
the litterbox we set up for him.  And he had some of my chicken salad sandwich.

He was instantly comfortable at Char and Michael's place.  He was NOT crazy 
about the dog but he'll adjust.  He was OK with the other cats, doing a little 
nose-sniffing.  He liked the cat trees and rubbed his cheek against one of 
them.  And he gave me a few forehead to forehead head butts before I left.

Talked to Char this morning and she tells me Boscoe is curled up on a pillow in 
the bed room.  And he's been following her around and talking to her.  It seems 
he knows he is home and has a family of his own now.

I really hope this boy has some good longevity ahead of him.  He's finally in a 
good safe loving place and I hope he gets to enjoy it for a lonjg time.

Thanks you everyone for helping to get him there.  And thank you Michael and 
Char for taking him in and loving him.

What is it about those sassy, fiesty, independant calico girls that makes us 
love them so?  We must be suckers for punishment, cause they sure do love to 
dole it out.  One of mine is ancient, weighs less than 6 lbs, toothless and I 
still can't pill her.  She's the smallest cat of the bunch, but she can move a 
15 lb male from his bowl of canned food just by staring at him.  I'm crazy 
about her and I celebrate her attitude.

i think it's really natural for us to want to try EVERYTHING to help our
beloved ones, even when, sometimes, it's in our best interests and not

4-paw-declawed, harlequin girl that refuses to purr tho will, very
occasionally, practice Rhythmic Growling--to force her to do anything would
be an assault on her very cathood. she's someplace close to 16 years
old, and has blessed my life with bite wounds and attiTUDE for over ten
years now--i adore her, and know completely that in her furry little
multicolored heart, she  feels the same way toward me. i will do what is
best for her when her job on this earth is complete; no matter how much it
pains me--i know that she will tell me if she needs help, tho actually i'm
just hoping she'll allow me to be with her when the time comes, and not just
leave me an email.

the wisest advice i've ever gotten, though, is that it's best to send them
across the bridge one day too soon, than five minutes too late. feeling
guilty about their, "not being ready," when they weren't yet suffering, is
pointless, but nothing compared to the knowledge that one has waited too
long.

sometimes, tho, we need to go through the latter to understand. we need to
be gentle with one another as we learn these horrible lessons. and hope that
what we learn so painfully can help someone else learn them with less
difficulty.

The way I read it is they take in cats that are in dire straights and have made 
provisions for FeLV's and FIV's.  It looks to me like they ask for the large 
donations if you have a pet for which you want them to take 
over responsibility. I agree with Gary, that if people pay that amount for 
lifetime care, they're not apt to want their cat adopted out.  I think this fee 
takes care of a couple of issues for the sanctuary, it keeps the numbers of 
owner forfeitures down and the money they do get covers costs so the expense 
doesn't cut into the rescue end.  They also have a vet on staff and a low cost 
spay neuter clinic that is open to the public.  It looks pretty impressive.  
That said, I would still have to check it out myself before any of mine went 
there (or anywhere for that matter).  Of course, I'd have to win the lotto also.

you could try angel's gate, they have a place in long island, but also one in 
upstate near delhi (they were willing to take a feluk cat I was trying to find 
a home for, but in the end I kept him due to medical issues and anxiety)  that 
was about two years ago so I dont know if they are still up and running.  I 
emailed them through their website.  Also another sanctuary is called love and 
hope in upstate new york they have a website (google "love and hope sanctuary 
new york) i think you will find it through there.  good luck!Jeni
