Hi Kerry,
Yes the flouxetine stopped that all together, he didn't mark while
he was on it. I kept him on it for about 6 months then took him off it
because he was just laying around, thinking it was the flouxetine that
was making him lazy, but come to find out that is just the way Cody is.

He does mark on occasion, every few months, nothing like before. He
used to mark all over the house several times a day, everyday. The
first med made it less often, the second even less often, but the
flouxetine stopped the behavior completely. I was told that half the
animals using it would go back to marking if taken off, but decided to
give it a try.

I decided not to put him back on it because I can deal with marking
every few months, if it gets worse I would put him back on it.

I entered this conversation late, but if this has not been said, then
here's my two cents: Sometimes with a cat that WILL NOT take meds
orally, you can go to the supermarket deli, ask for a chunk of Boar's
Head liverwurst (I believe BH does not contain onion powder, so is safe
for cats), take it home, and use it to make little pill pockets to hide
the meds. Most of my cats LOVE the liverwurst, and will eat it right up.
Not all of them, but most. Worth a try?...

Belinda: looking for advice re kitty prozac

2008-06-24 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Belindajust wanted to clarify. (It was me who started the confusion,
using the term prozac!)

By prozac (below) stopping it completely, do you mean the fluoxetine
that you used--the fluoxetine stopped it completely.?

If the foaming issue is easily fixed (as it seems to be in everyone's
experience) then it's def worth her trying the fluoxetine again.

Thanks again!

Kerry

That is also what I did with Cody, we started with the most

commonly used of the drugs (amytriptaline), we tried 2 or 3 before

trying the prozac, they all helped but only the prozac stopped it

completely.

We had Cody's fluoxetine's compounded into a transdermal gel that we

rubbed on the inside of his ear. Belinda

was the foaming during or immediately after pilling?  gelcaps and a pill gun
could fix that - I don't know about the other forms ssri's come in (fluoxetine

Subject: looking for advice re kitty prozac

Dear all
Has anyone ever used a kitty "Prozac" such as fluoxetine? One of my co-workers
whose cat has always been a sprayer--and she's had him for YEARS, kudos to
her---was thrilled when 1/2 tab fluoxetine daily fixed the behavior almost
immediately. Unfortunately he began foaming at the mouth at the same time, so
she stopped using it after a few days.
Does anyone have any experience in using an alternative "prozac" that worked
for spraying without causing foaming or other adverse side-effects. She says
she's going to the vet to ask about a different one after she returns from
vacation, and I thought I'd try picking your brains before she went. I think
it's wonderful that--unlike so many people--she's committed to her cat despite
his spraying.
I have a sprayer too, but he's feral, so there's nothing I can use (he's not
into any sort of treat on a regular basis, and he turned his nose up at
Pillpockets) apart from a dividing line between him and the cause of his
behavior, my other cats. He has his own loyal buddy, a female, Momcat, so he's
pretty content on the whole, I think.
Anyway, thanks for any other "prozac" ideas!
Kerry

Baytril can be given as an injection, it is an inter-muscular
injection thought, not sure on the clavomox, it does come in liquid

and i'm told that, for compounded oral meds, three-fishie flavor is the very
best. a bengal friend swore by it, and he was on cardiac meds for 7 years.
hated the tuna, tho.

Different drugs have different absorbtion rates. We could not do transdermal
prozac wth Peepers because we could not tailor the dose reliabily when given
through the skin. If your vet prescribed a certain med, ask the vet at thaty
time if transdermal is an option.

I used flouxetine with Cody for about 6 months, we never had that
problem. I sounds like it probably tastes awful and he is foaming when
he gets a taste of it. Have her put it in a pill pocket or gel capsule
and I think that would solve it. It worked very well with Cody also.
Stopped immediately too.

Kerry,We use amitryptaline at the shelters and I have 2 of mine on it right
now.Mystique has a piddle problem and Xander an attitude problem.I use the
compounded form on Xander and the pill on the other.
Also when I first started giving Mystique the pill she drooled and foamed
badly.I now cut them in halves and put them in the little gel capsules so she
cant get a taste of the pill if I dont get it in the as good as I should.Matbe
the Prozac is bitter and thats why her cat foams.

Dear all
Has anyone ever used a kitty "Prozac" such as fluoxetine?
Kerry

Hi,

I've been using Paxil on my cat (per the vet) for inappropriate urination, over
grooming and general aggression towards my other cats for a few months now and
it has been working wonderfully, with no visable side effects.  Polly (cat) I
adopted from a free roam shelter several years and is not socialized at all, I
can't pill her but luckily (Thank goodness!) she loves Pill Pockets, funny, but
my other cats hate them.

I tried feliway, and still use it, but it doesn't seem to help much.

Dear all
Has anyone ever used a kitty "Prozac" such as fluoxetine?
Kerry

2008-06-21 Thread catatonya
I have used 'clonicalm' for overgrooming. But I didn't like the side effects
of that either. Spraying is such a problem! I'm sure there must be something
to help. Has she tried putting a scratching post or food by where he sprays?

We have two kitties on antianxiety drugs. We get them compounded through a
compounding pharmacy in Arizona. We tried Feliway and it did NOTHING,
though I understand it works for some.

RE: looking for advice re kitty prozac

2008-06-20 Thread Debbie Harrison

I tried amytriptaline (that's probably spelled wrong!) on Ruben for
inappropriate urination.I now believe that it was his first signs that
something was wrong with him internally
My daughter used the same drug (we had it compounded into a cream we could rub
into the ear...pilling was out of the question) on one of her male cats...her
cat became more calm, but I'm not sure it completely solved the problem.
I have heard people are having great results with the plug ins that release
certain pheremones that are calming, but I haven't tried them yet myself.
Good luck, it's one of a cat owner's biggest problems!!Debbie (COL)"You gotta
