Julie, I just realized these were your posts. I am so sorry. You are so amazing and I know you loved him and cared for him more than anyone else on earth could. All we can do is our best and you did more than that. I have to remind myself of what you said when we lost our little Step Kitty - they are warm and safe and have love and full bellies at the end and that is what matters. Re: [Felvtalk] Lost my FELV Stray dude
Oh boy thank you for the props. :) I'm so glad I didnt put him to sleep the moment they found out he was FELV. That was presented as an option, and I thought "I at least have to go do some research, and give him some love and snuggles tonight if he really has to be put to sleep"... but then he stayed a month. :) I have to wonder if the day we finally caught him (I'd tried a few times)... if that was a day his legs were "off" and that's why we were able to just go scoop him up from laying in the gutter. It sort of all comes together now. Anyway... Thanks for the love you guys have all sent It helps to have folks like you out there in the world who understand. Julie From: Emeraldkittee emeraldkit...@yahoo.com hi Julie, He sure was your kitty, and always will be! What a heartache that you came to know him during his final weeks, but what a blessing for him - I can't imagine the anquish he would have felt suffering like that. I am sure he's in heaven now, but he surely thought he was in heaven the moment you took him in. It's a beautiful story and you are to be commended for helping him without even knowing much about the condition. I, too, have a stray who turned out to be positive so this story tugged at my heart. Julie, What you did for that cat is really beautiful, and he will stay alive in your heart forever. I am sorry for your loss. We also care for a stray who turned out to be FeLV positive - Zelda has been living in my foster room since January, waiting for a home, and our evenings together sound a lot like yours. You gave him a wonderful last couple of weeks, with safety, comfort and the love that all creatures deserve. I am sure that you will be blessed for your kindness. Trish Help me help animals! Hi Julie, I've "met" you in some of the other cat groups we were both in. How sad about your stray dude. This is quite common with FelV cats. I've had several who lost the use of their back legs. Thank heavens you found this cat and you were able to give him a few weeks of love and care before you had to let him go. I believe it was you who had the drooling cat with stomatitis wasn't it? You had him in your basement for ages, and you finally found him a good home after having all his teeth pulled. You also started a N/S clinic didn't you? You do so much for cats. Thank you Julie, Lorrie (the old cat lady in WV) > On 08-03, Julie G. wrote: > Hi I've been lurking a few weeks.? In July I picked up a stray that > turned out to be FELV+.? Re: [Felvtalk] Lost my FELV Stray dude
Hi! I work with cancer patients and can explain to you what happened. Some tumors (cancer) invade the spinal cord, pushing and causing leg weakness and according to my patients, the pain is excrutiating. Radiation therapy can palliate the pain but not cure at this stage. We have a window of 24-48 hours to treat or there will be a permanent disability( won't walk again). In your cat case, if medication didn't work, I think that you made the right decision by letting him go. Life is not measure about how long you live but how you lived it. In other words, Quality is the most important. --- On Tue, 8/3/10, Sharyl wrote: From: Sharyl Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Lost my FELV Stray dude To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Date: Tuesday, August 3, 2010, 11:43 PM Julie, thank you for taking in Dude and giving him the love and attention he deserved. Julie, His fate would probably been much worse than that. Cats that are sick or impaired become prey...easy prey...instead of hunters. I am sure you know that cats don't show their people symptoms when they are sick..it is because they will die in the wildthe same, to a degree with dogs. They can be so hard to care for because they know their fates if they are not able to take care of themselves. Dixie didn't show signs that she was in trouble until the day before she left this world.I rushed her to the very best vets 2 + hours away. By the next day, she was leaving. She waited until I was taking her home to put her in an O2 tent.my little girl was not leaving this world at any vets..no way...only in the Jeep where she traveled on so many adventures and with her Person. I won't go into what raccoons, dogs, hawks.could have done. Your little Dude was extremely lucky...and you are blessed for caring for him. Keep your heart open. Re: [Felvtalk] Lost my FELV Stray dude
Hi, Julie. Sorry you lost your boy. This so sounds like my own intro to FeLV, when a stray came to my door and yowled to get in. He was a sweet and friendly boy, ready for affection even during the first few days, when he had horrific mats in his fur -- he looked like he had wings, but they were all mats. We got some of them out, and the vet finished up, but their tests revealed FeLV. We isolated Patches in a room away from our other cats and gave him lots of love and care, but after only 7 weeks he stopped eating. The vet said he thought there were lymphoma tumors making swallowing painful, so we made the decision and sent him along. We felt so bad for him, he really wanted to join the other cats in the rest of the house and was just such a nice boy. To this day I wish we had been able to do better by him, but our consolation is that his last couple of months were full of comfort and caring. The connection between FeLV and tumors is that the FeLV suppresses the immune system, and leaves them open to conditions, especially like lymphoma and cancers, that cats are naturally prone to but that a healthy cat's body would fight off. Hugs to you, and gentlest of Bridge vibes to your boy. Diane R. -Original Message- From: felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org [mailto:felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org] On Behalf Of Julie G. Thanks Sharyl. I was hell bent that I was going to find him a home too. I was even trying to get some of my college kid neighbors to take him on, and I would sponsor his food and vet expenses. I mean I was paying for him anyway, I may as well pay for him to live in someone's house and not in my crummy basement room. But alas we didnt get that far. For a stray kitty, he sure was well behaved and lovey! Big goofball. Re: [Felvtalk] Lost my FELV Stray dude
Good for you for giving this little guy some good times at the end of his life. Had you not been there for him, he would have suffered so much out there. No matter what happened to him in the first part of his life, he got to know love and caring and the good life he so deserved. Thank you so much for doing that for him... In July I picked up a stray that turned out to be FELV+. In his few weeks with me he gained a pound, had a cushy bed, delicious premium canned food, and all the snuggles I had time to give him, since he lived in the basement while I tried to figure out where he could live (I have 4 cats). I'd watch movies on the laptop with him on my lap, snoozing away happily. He always seemed a little wobbly, and his pupils were always different sizes. But he was relatively happy so we kept on. Last night his back legs didnt work. This had happened before, my pet sitter said, but they always came back "on" after a while. But this morning they still didnt work. The vet examined and confirmed that he had tumors pressing on his spinal cord. He was in pain and his entire back end didn't do what he wanted it too. So the decision was made to let him go. He'd been living under porches on my block for at least a few months when we finally caught him. I'm so glad we did, I cant imagine what a frustrating, frightening life he'd be having out on the street right now, starving, full of tape worm, and 2 back legs that wont work. I'm crushed that we couldnt give him a better life, and for longer, but I'm glad we got to him when he needed us, and filled his belly and his heart for a few weeks. Safe and comfy and within a foot of food at all times. :) Anyway, I dont know anything about FELV, this was my first introduction to it... so I dont exactly know how the tumors are related (cancer?)... but I wanted to drop a line to folks who understand. Julie, Thanks for giving this poor boy a wonderful life short as it may have seemed. His last days were full of love and comfort. Sally ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Hi I've been lurking a few weeks. In July I picked up a stray that turned out to be FELV+.
