Thanks Kelley This year has been better. Junior has made it past the one year point, and though he is not perfectly healthy, he is hanging in there. I need to get him back on his Transfer factor. I think it helps him. Also I am thinking of going to the big guns for his URI, azithromycin. Last time we saw the vet she was on board for this as the next step. The Clindamycon knocked out his gingivitis but the URI remains and he now has a cough. Yes - I don't have an FELV+ cat but I do have an immune compromised cat (heart disease) and azithromycin clears up her URIs when nothing else does. I hope it will help Junior. I will probably call the Vet tomorrow. She is real good about Junior's condition. I do not have to take him in all the time. I am guessing she will have to write script for it am I right? Yes, they can't dispense it that I know of..at least not in Texas..my vet writes me a prescription for it and I get it filled at Target... He would later develop a habit of making biscuits in my hair. He did this all his short life. He also would sleep on my head. Purring loudly. I mean literally on my head or he would use it as a pillow. All his life he had an occasional cough. I worried that it was asthma or heart worms. I will never know. The spells were short lived and then he seemed fine. Summer of 2006 he had a vicious coughing spell that literally knocked him off his feet. He also had a cold. I took him to the vet. He was given antibiotics and got better. Several of my other cats got sick too. All with cold like symptoms. Junior his half brother, same mom she was feral, had been hit by a car that spring and stayed inside recuperating. He too got sick and had anemia on top of the cold. Long story short I wound up losing Pumpkin who was hiding symptoms from me and not eating. He was anemic and jaundiced when taken to the vet. Two day later I had to take him back and he stayed on IV for two days. Seemed better the second night there he crashed. He was a shell of himself and I had him PTS. I took Junior back to his vet to make sure he was ok because he had similar symptoms. He had a fever of 106.5 so they kept him. The vet called later wanted to do a feline leukemia test and it was positive. Turned out Tiny was positive too. Junior already had classic symptoms. Tiny was over his cold and never showed symptoms. I also had another positive cat who was PTS as he was also positive for FELV and FIV. He had also been sick. I would have probably done that differently had I known what I know now. The rest of my cats were ok and vaccinated. Tiny had been a little under the weather, but nothing earth shattering or I would have had him checked out. Christmas day it rained all day. Tiny seems a little distressed, but then again not anything that would indicate what would happen. I watched TV with him and I got up to check my emails. I heard that same violent cough as the summer before. I rushed to the living room. to move him. I though he would vomit. His gums were already turning blue. I gabbed the oxygen tank and it was empty. I went to get the concentrator which is my husbands. Checked on him we are talking less than a minute. His breathing calmed down and he was gone. I am told that it was probably a blood clot he threw and that he did not feel anything after the initial cough. I still wonder if there was something I missed in his short life that could have saved him. I buried him in the rain crying the whole time. It would seem his grave is probably a tad on the lot next to me. Junior still survives. I constantly worry about him. He currently has a URI that he can't seem to shake. There has been a long time curse if you want to call it that, which follows a new arrival. It seems that a short time after the arrival I would lose a cat. Now it dosen't always happen. My neighbors must think I rescue cats, because this fall 3 were left at my house, 2 in a box on Thanksgiving Day. One was given to me by a lady who was told I did rescue. Well not officially but maybe unofficially. I have kept 2 of these kitties. Pewter was spayed Friday and she is doing great. High jumps and running around with he companion JJ. All my cats got their booster for FELV. The vet agreed on the 3 year protocol for distemper. My wallet is much smaller now. Thanks Kelley for the information on the Zithromax. Sally, there's no specific question in your post to be answered, that's why I didn't reply to it the first time it was posted (there's actually not a single question mark in the entire post). What is it you are specifically wanting to know or get feedback on? I'll take a stab at it anyways: I'm glad comcast fixed your internet problems. Yes, cats do choose us, certainly much more than we choose them. I do think that focusing on Junior should be a priority, but don't forget to watch everybody. It's easy to get tunnel-vision and focus on the ONE cat we think is weaker one, and miss something in another cat because we narrowed our focus. The low-dose interferon they use for FIV is the same treatment as is used for FELV, and that's posted on our main website at http://felineleukemia.org on the treatments page. I'm sorry you can't afford your old vet anymore, perhaps pointing out that fact would be beneficial to both of you; you may get a discount as an original client, and he might feel humbled enough to realize that he's alienating his old clients by his new found glory. My FELV+ cat was constantly groomed by another of my cats, and he NEVER caught the FELV from her, so just because they lick and bite each other doesn't mean they will contaminate each other with FELV. As far as your cats' previous felv vaccinations, health, and history goes, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have them all tested again, that way you could treat the felv and/or fiv positive ones with Interferon and keep an extra-close eye on them. I do think you should be treating the FELV+ ones that you already know about, if you aren't already. I'm sure Daisy just happens to have a really good immune system, and is healthy. I don't think it's a mystery, she's just been lucky and blessed with a good immune system. You can boost the other's immune systems by feeding good quality food, and supplementing with vitamin C and a good general multi-vitamin/mineral supplement (and giving Interferon to the FELV+ ones). Oh, and I'm sorry for your loss of Lionel and Pumpkin too! Is that kinda what you were looking for? Phaewryn Comcast came into the neighborhood and fixed whatever the problem was with the connection here. I was barely about to get a couple of emails out. For the past couple days I have cried, and reflected on my time with Tiny. Tiny was definitely my cat or more realistically I was his human. He chose me and that was very special. I am so glad he came to live with me. I will always wonder if I did this or that would the outcome have been different. Probably not and besides I cannot change what has happened. I now have to focus on Junior. I spoke to Beth at work today. She used to be a vet's tech. Her cat was diagnosed FIV. Well she was prepared to euthanize the cat. He was elderly however the vet knowing she did not want to do this tried an experimental procedure. I never could find out what it was other than it was interferon. Today her husband stopped by and described the procedure. It was low dose oral administration of interferon. She said the cat became almost kitten-like and asymptomatic. The cat later developed oral cancer and was put down, he was 18 years old. Now that I have this information, I will have my vet Dr Staunton call her vet Dr Elam to get the information. I already gave Dr Staunton the Italian study paper to read. I was told she took it home that day to read. Dr Elam used to be my family's vet for many years. I cannot afford him these days as he is the highest priced vet in town. It is funny, because he started out as a farm animal vet and was very reasonable. I still see him occasionally in the grocery store. I am thankful I was able to spend time with Tiny during his last hour here on earth. When I lost my Fluff Last February, I was able to spend time with him because I had a few days of vacation I had to use up. I knew Fluffy was declining and I was so lucky then to have spent his last week on earth with him. I did not know at the time that would be the end for him. He was the alpha cat and he trained all my cats on proper cat behavior. Although Ittle Bitty was Tiny's best friend and he trained Tiny in the art of lick and bite. Fluffy had trained Ittle Bitty.and so it goes. Just an observation. I have heard that older cats most likely have some immunity to FeLV. I also have read vaccines are most likely effective longer than stated. he is what I know about my cats. Spike age 10 tested negative - likely to have been vaccinated once for FELV and other diseases Speedy age 8 tested negative- likely to have been vaccinated once for FELV and other diseases Ittle Bitty age 7 tested negative -likely to have been vaccinated once for FELV and other diseases Little Black - age 5 she is not social at all with the other cats she is strictly outside and eats on her own. HI Michelle, You could be right. I went to the archives and I see your name a lot regarding lymphomas. I have one more FELV pos cat. The thing with Tiny is that he did not have any symptoms that alarmed me. I know the vet had examined both cats a few weeks before this. Junior had a URI at that time and had had it for two weeks. He also had uveitis. Tiny other than the URI he had last summer had not appeared sick at all. He was vaccinated at that time. I observed no ill effects for that either. Both cats have been on immunoregulin. My question is what am I looking for??? I have a picture of Tiny taken a few days before he died. He does appear to have aged. He was still eating and had normal bowel movements. He also still played up until the final day. Was he just protecting me from his pain? I am asking you for your experiences with lymphoma. Someone also suggested Tiny had lived a long time. Oh course he was only tested recently. I can tell you he did have coughing spells all his life. I assumed allergies or later though it may be asthma. They always passed quick so there was never a reason to get him looked at for that. His URI this summer had him coughing so hard he would fall over. He did that also the day he died. The antibiotics did clear up his summer URI. He was no tested until I lost Pumpkin a couple month later. That was when junior was not doing well he had been to the vet and found anemic. I took him back after losing Pumpkin and they tested him then because of anemia and high fever. I would have never known Tiny was positive had this not happened. I would have just wondered why he died. Also Tiny's test was a weak positive, so I really was hoping he would turn it around. Do you think he was positive for a lot longer than I knew? I was so hoping Tiny would have lasted longer. I was talking to one of the vet tech's at from the first vet who saw my cats. She said she of course was not in the position to make a diagnosis but said form what I described it sounded like he threw a blood clot. All I know is that it was quick. Thank goodness, I had spent time with him today. He had spent the previous hour lying next to me. No obvious respiratory distress at that time. I had just left his side to send few emails. I had been thinking of Bandy and praying that no kitties would die today. I always suspected he had asthma. All I know is he was coughing and started turning blue almost immediately, his eyes were dilated and fixed. I knew it was not good. We have an oxygen tank here for Eric, but it was empty and I looked to the backup. When I got back to him less than a minute he was gone. I buried him in the dark and rain. I will have to go out tomorrow and do a better job. I could not really see and I was crying hysterically. I have not talked much about Tiny, because he was the one I thought could turn it around. He was still playful up until yesterday. He enjoyed life so much. Now there is Junior left. We shall see. Thanks for your support. Sally, You need to make sure that Tiny does not have septicemia. It is treated with antibiotics. Especially after dog bites, kitties are given antibiotics because of the risk of infection; dogs mouths are pretty filthy according to my vet, but kitties can get it even from cat bites. If you haven't taken Tiny to the vet for the bite wounds, you might want to reconsider getting him on antibiotics. My best friend's kitty died from untreated septicemia (she had gotten out, disappeared, and showed back up the day she died, about a week later; it was too late to treat her, sadly). :) Wendy __ Do You Yahoo!?
