[Finale] Mac PDFWriter (Lisanet) Virtual PDF Printer issue

Mac specific convo:

I've been using the virtual PDF printer "PDFwriter" by Lisanet (
https://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfwriterformac/ ) for some time with
great results. It's been particularly useful when dropping multiple
(sometimes huge amounts of) finale files directly onto the PDFwriter
printer icon in the dock - it happily chugs through the queue at a great
rate, producing PDFs that have been through all my systems and also that of
the commercial printers for hundreds of books.

I've noticed a difference however, between what is produced by Finale
2014.5 and the latest version of FInale (v25).

[1] In Finale 2014.5, the PDFs are produced correctly.

[2] In FInale v25 the PDFs produced by PDFwriter look like they've been
printed to a longer page format. I still get a multipage PDF that looks
valid, but the page layout is incorrect.

Note how the page ends midway through the bottom staff, and that the left
and right margins are uneven.

I've put together some workarounds such as *Graphics > Export Pages* and
also *File > Print...* using various combinations of finalescript and
Quickeys, but neither are fast in comparison, and are prone to asking
whether something should be replaced if it already exists, which PDFwrite
gets around by adding a job number prefix (not everyone will like that, I
understand).

I see that the following is present in Finale 2014.5 but not Finale v25,
maybe this has something to do with it:
*Finale Preferences > Save & Print > Use Finale's Page Orientation Instead
Of The Printer's Page Orientation*

Curiously, if I print directly from Finale using *File > Print*, and select
the PDFwriter driver and "default settings" it works fine.

I'm somewhat out of ideas where to go from here, having explored every
avenue I can think of for the moment. Does anyone have any insight into why
this is the case, and perhaps how to work around it?

Thank you for this link Robert. You can sort by 'planned' and I hope that
those things are carried through.

Since the forums were closed I've lost a lot of interest in Finale. I use
it all the time, but I no longer correspond regularly with people about it
or champion it like I used to. I'd miss it if it disappeared, and would
have to retrain to use something else, but frankly, I'm amazed and
delighted that I've been able to use it without many problems for the last
10 years or more, throughout which it seem to have lived a rather fragile
existence. Since about mid 2005 I consider every year a bonus :)

[Finale] Time sig contextual menu

Does anyone know how you set a preset for the time signature contextual
menu?



I've got a time signature pattern that I need to use over and over again
that isn't in there 7/8 (4+3) then 7/8 (4+3) then 2/8. It would be really
handy to have 7/8 (4+3) in that list.

[Finale] Help converting two Sibelius files to MusicXML

Hello,

is anyone able to open two Sibelius scores for me and export them as
MusicXML. I have Sibelius 7.5 but it seems these are from a newer version.
If I used Sibelius more than once every couple of years I'd update, but
this would only lead to the most expensive 3 minutes of my life!

[Finale] Redraw slow? Update to new version?

I'm getting some horrific screen redraw slowdowns. Is there anything I can
try to speed things back up?

I was also wondering about whether to upgrade, to see if this issue goes
away. I'm using an older Finale Mac 2014. I've avoided the bleeding edge
release for so long that I've forgotten what to do to revert back in the
event you run into problems.

Try the ellipsis (alt-semicolon on mac). That's what I see when I try to
edit that font.

[Finale] Finalescript frustration

I'd be grateful for a little help with FinaleScript. For about 90 minutes
now I've been trying every variation of command from thins I've found in
the manual, forum, articles to get what I would have thought was a very
straight forward script. This sort of thing happens every time I try and
use finale script :( in fact, I asked pretty much the same question on the
forum some time ago but no-ne could say how to do this directly in
finalescript, but maybe someone here knows a solution?

Sorry, that was my advice. I would try to agree to trial a small piece of
the work first on a fixed budget hourly rate so that both parties could see

I use this all the time, and also you can specify things being 2/3 and 1/3
the width by using absurd numbers such as 2 and 1, as long as the
total is bigger than expected I think it basically defaults to
proportional based on the numbers you enter (hope that makes sense).

As far as I can tell (I'm no expert), the transition of Finale from
Codewarrior to Xcode, OS9 to OSX, C++ to Obj C, Carbon to Cocoa etc. - all
this stuff has taken a monumental amount of work, and literally years to
accomplish. I know that Finale doesn't currently have the solid rep that a
hugely resourced company like Adobe can deliver, but (I've said it before
and I'll say it again) I stand in awe of what the Finale team has done just
to have steered it through the fast pace and ever changing goalposts of the
Apple platform changes of the last decade. I've feared for it so many
times, and I'm super-glad that it's still with us.

Of course there remains much to do, I'm not ignoring that, but I'm
heartened by the new message and the presence of some familiar team
members. I think your analogy sums it up very well Giovanni.

I've been using Fission by Rogue Amoeba. It's not free, but it is cheap. It
particularly suited my needs because it can bulk edit large audio files
down into smaller sections. Like anything, whether you like it or not will
depend on wholly if its feature set matches you needs. From my perspective
it's the perfect lightweight audio editor, and replaced audacity.

 After recording on my Zoom H2, I've been using Audacity to process

 support for Audacity ends at Mac 10.9, so I'll be without a solution
 once (if) I upgrade to 10.10 Yosemite. Have any Mac users found a

I believe that the deadline was set some time ago - the book was scheduled
and someone dropped out. Hence, the deadline is now ridiculous. However,
they know it and it's probably more a case of as soon as.

Someone may have a bunch of unpublished tuition materials from a course or
some such that would act as a good head start though, so you never know. My
involvement was simply to have been offered it, and as I can't do it, at
least to *attempt* to find someone who could do a proper job, because one
way or another they'll probably end up publishing something, and if it's
about finale I'd rather it was a credit to our community.

I'd just drop them on LisaNet PDFWriter about 100 at a time. Seems to be
much faster than using FinaleScript.

Archives tend to become unusable with OS changes etc, might be worth
creating a musicXML file to save alongside everything else, but that's not
my speciality - just trying to think how you might best future proof

Hi Richard

sorry I should have been more specific. Usually when you have a bunch of
staves showing you can select the staff tool, then select all (cmd-A) and
right click on ANY of the handles and choose Hide empty staves and it
will hide the staves.

Yesterday I came across a file where selecting the contextual menu using
the handle on the TOP stave in the group would work but none of the others
would, trying to issue the Hide empty staves command from any other
handle would fail. Or maybe there are certain conditions related to this
that I'm not familiar with?!

reduction of 85% too, I wonder if this is a voodoo number responsible for a

 There have been bugs in Finale over the 20+years I've been using it
 which only appeared at specific percentages.

 But it's easy enough to test -- he can go back to 90% and see if the
 problem is still there.  Or he could try 86% or 84% and see if the
 problem is still there.

I've often suggested offsets for such scenarios but never, until you've
mentioned this, found anyone else who was bothered by Finale's lack of
precision in this respect. My suffix libraries include a duplicate set of
suffixes which start about 5 EVPU further to the right for those I use most
often. You'll probably find my posts about it in the Finale forums by
searching for Chord Suffix Kerning or similar. Then again, maybe this has
been updated, or there's a better way to do it, so I'm very interested to
see what anyone else has to say about it.

[Finale] IgorEngraverClassic Font

Does anyone have a copy of Igor Engraver Classic? I'm presuming it's a
music font for Igor engraver.

It was used in an old score I've been tasked with updating but I don't have
a copy of the font. I tried contacting Noteheads, the makers of Igor
Engraver but the site doesn't appear to have been updated for years and the
email address bounced back for several days with mailbox full messages so
I'm concluding that it's an abandoned project.

I have no intention of using the font for anything other than ripping a
glyph chart so that I can replace any characters used with something more
appropriate.

You can't do this in snow leopard (see
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html), but in leopard you
should be able to set your default printer to Adobe PDF (if you have
acrobat) then use a finalescript batch print to just print an entire
file or all open documents.

make sure this is checked. If you don't, then you are prone to
selecting things using the whole bounding box rather than just the
path, which means that something with a large bounding box that is
front of the element you are trying to select, may be selected
instead.

Furthermore, finale EPS files have all their objects grouped, so you
will have to select an item and then OBJECT  UNGROUP so that you can
work with each element.

[Finale] Trying to contact Jari

Hi

I've been trying to contact Jari by email but have not been able to
get any kind of response in more than 3 months. The FinaleTips.Nu
website has been hosted free of charge on my server for the last
couple of years without any problem, but the forum has not been
updated in a while and is now attracting spam of a rather unsavory
sort, along with multiple automated signups.

As a result, and in view of the fact that I have not been able to
contact jari, I have had to close the forum to new signups, which is
not something that give me particular joy, but I hope the Finale
community can see why this has to be done.

If anyone knows what has become of Jari, or how I may contact him (as
email does not seem to be getting through) I would be grateful if you
would contact me off list.

Hi Chuck

I recently bought two 20 inch TFT rotatable monitors. They were
expensive enough so I bought a second hand Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special
Edition G5 Card on eBay! It was about £80 which is what - $140?

It works brilliantly. The control panels are found in System Prefs 
Preference Panes  ATI and you just click whether you want 90 degrees
CW, 90 degrees CCW or 180 degrees for each monitor. It also works with
either VGA or DVI. Actually it has an ADC and a DVI connector but it
comes with a DVI to VGA connector, and Br Bott sell an ADC to VGA
connector if you need VGA.

Anyway, this probably isn't the cheapest option even secondhand, but
just to say that ATI versavision (rotation software) is brilliant and
rotation in general is a real eye opener. I'm generally using one
monitor in front of me in landscape and one to the left in portrait.
This means I can have a score open in two views - the detail in
landscape in front of me where I do actual work and zoom about - and a
complete page overview in portrait mode to the left which updates live
with the work I'm doing in the other monitor.

Can't say anything about longevity, but for quality I can vouch for
the LG2000C, rotatable, 1600x1200, DVI  VGA, 3 year on site swap out
warranty. I paid about £350 each, you can get far cheaper if you don't
need the HiRes. Anyone thinking of going for rotation would do well to
put them on a shortlist.

Just what was needed!

I noticed the subject of the last email from ADC (Apple Developer
Connection) was It's Time to Ship Your Universal Binary. Well this is
certainly the next best thing.

What pleases me about this is the shift away from an over cautious
neither confirm nor deny stance (which never did anyone any good) in
favour of one that provides people with real optimism.

there is no garantee to get them right on the screen.

Compare a PDF of the same Finale file produced on a Mac and on a PC, and 
you'll immediately see what we mean by ugly output on screen. The fact 
remains that Mac-generated PDFs look much better. This shouldn't be a 
problem even at low resolution. There's no reason why all staff lines 
shouldn't be identical on the screen.

Dennis

Last time we looked at this issue we discovered that Finale Windows
generated PDF files had staff lines that were composed of very thin
lines, that is to say something like 10 very skinny lines per staff
line. That was the difference between the Mac and Windows PDF files, and
the display problem is likely the result of all the very closely knit
clustering.

It would be interesting to get an official response as to why this is
the case.

but required a third-party hack. The same is definitely true for my 
iBook (I have tried it, though I haven't used it extensively.

But I think that such things are the main basis in the problems any of 
us have (and the concurrent complaints) with any/all user-interfaces. 
We think they're great and intuitive when their logic follows our own, 
and we think they're stupid/poorly-developed/counter-intuitive when 
their logic runs counter to our own.

There isn't any universally-agreeable, really intuitive way of doing 
things.  At least as far as I understand things.  The moment you make 
something intuitive for person A, you've likely made it 
counter-intuitive for person B.

I've pointed out what I think the mental analogy should be, as follows:

1st line of lyrics
2nd line of lyrics
3rd line of lyrics

which is

3

and it seems there are some people who see this as the intuitive ordering:

2
1

It seems to me this must be like the left/right brained thing. Those of
us seeing visual lists (1. 2. 3.) and those thinking of numbering logic
(2 is 'higher' than one).

For instance, I have no problem imagining 2 as a higher number than 1, 
so it's easy for me to click the up-arrow to raise the number from 1 to 
2, and the down-arrow to lower it from 1 to 0.

I don't have a problem with it, I just always click the wrong arrow once
at the beginning of each edit (not using it everyday). I was just
wondering if it's one of those things that no-one ever complained about
because it's never the most pressing thing (always something bigger broken!).

get our hands on a real Mac Intel machine (on order, already shipped),
we will have more definite information

Hopefully the previous negativity that we were all feeling is lifting
with the news that MM bought one of the first Mac Intel developer
machines immediately as they came out, and have now splashed out on the
first run of production machines. If that isn't a flag waving with the
words we're working on it then I don't know what is.

thanks, I guess I read the chapter and try some more... But it would 
be nice just to press an x and get an x.

The default behaviour of Finale placing the X notehead for you when you
drag from staff to TAB very nearly works, but the notehead is about 3 or
4 EVPU our of alignment vertically which is annoying, it's a taste thing
but prehaps it'll work for you.

But it seems to me that it is a reasonable design choice in editing text 
blocks, to expect that if one wants to edit a higher numbered block, to 
access it by way of the up arrow, and to access a lower numbered block 
by using the down arrow, and it appears that he designers of the 
interface used the same basic design in the edit lyrics and the edit 
text block dialogs.

If you're inputting lyrics (Type Into Score) and want to get from 1 to 2
you press the down arrow, so that to me means that it is internally
inconsistent. 

The logic seems pretty simple to me, make any numbered list and see
which way you wrote it ... top to bottom most likely. That's why the
lists of instruments in the instrument list run from top to bottom, and
why text expression numbers start with 1 at the top.

Number 1 is first, and that should be at the top - it is back to front.
I understand your idea of higher numbered blocks, but I'm struggling to
think of any real world analogies where it's actually used, and it's use
in Finale is very much the exception to the rule.

Not really.

I found a bend sign, how about hammer on / pull off? Or tapping?

There are lots of different styles for guitar notation, it really
depends on what you want. Most publishers use slurs for hammer on pull
off. With regard to tapping you'd have to tell us what notation system
it is you're trying to use or copy.

How do I enter x-notes for muted strings?

I like my X noteheads to be _exactly_ the same in the staff and the tab,
so I make them as the same character font and size and make them as six
different shape expressions (single and then banks of 2 to 6, I don't
want to place 6 individual ones to make a muted chord!). These can b
placed quickly with metatools set to snap into the correct position
horizontally, leaving you to just set the vertical position. That being
said no doubt there are a dozen ways of doing it.

You'll notice that you can delete the default X's that are created in
the tab caused by dragging the staff notes containing x note heads down
to the tab by using the note mover tool - Finale creates these weird
default ones but I've never liked them. This is something Finale could
seriously improve on.

I wanted to convert a 
guitar tune from guitar pro to Finale, but i had to give up...

Sorry never heard of it.

The whole of Chapter 36 covers guitar notation (I'm in Finale 2005 at
the moment), but you're right, it's not much of a tutorial.

I'm often around on FinaleIRC (see my signature) it may be easier to
catch me on there in this case, otherwise I could see some of these
queries going on for days and days, nothing wrong with here and it's
good for the archive, but I don't have a great deal of time at the
moment to go into step by step explanations (big project on!) but you're
welcome to pick my brains on stuff like this if I'm about.

Absolutely not! Engraver slurs need just as much tweaking as regular 
slurs in order to look right, and IMO the old slurs are more easily 
adjusted. I instruct everyone who publishes with me to turn off 
engraver slurs before beginning their work.

I don't use them, I like to use my own judegement about what looks good
in a given situation, and most of the time the best starting point seems
to be with engraver slurs off.

Apple's iLife stuff, and Pages are great examples of programs that 
require scant reading to get them to work.

Comparing Pages with Finale isn't really a fair comparison, Pages just
isn't that complex a program. It would be better to compare Finale with
the Pro apps like Finale Cut Pro or Logic.

To be honest, I think it is increasingly becoming its greatest weakness. 
Especially since it seems to be trying to be a toy as well as a tool. I 
wished it would concentrate on being a tool.

I'm hoping that continued success of SmartMusic and also encouraging
results with Finale such as this last quarter will mean extra
development resources, and will be better in all respects. What is
absolutely critical IMHO is that while it continues to expand, they get
a far better grip on the GUI, layout of menus, more consistent use of
keystrokes and continue to address the learning curve.

Finale's greatest weaknesses IMHO are it's learning curve (being
addressed), it's failure to address known issues and, partly as result
of its own depth, a complex GUI and myriad of finicky (and much needed!)
preferences that utterly bamboozle new users.

It's not quite as fast (say 85%) as the OS9 version, and it's just as
tetchy, but you're probably used to the weirdness already. A totally
solid, predictable and advanced OSX macro utility is yet to be built I
think, I do think it will be built by the Quickeys team though, and
there isn't a cloud hanging over it's development as there possibly is
with iKeys.

I find some drop down menus impossible to access with Quickeys at the
moment, hopefully this will be solved in an update at some point. There
are issues I had when closing windows, where after a long time wondering
why macros didn't work I found that it was because when closing a window
it had actually captured the name of the file being operated on when I
was recording the macro itself, and was therefore expecting me to be
using that same file in subsequent playback - this was fixed easily once
I realised the problem, by asking it to ignore the name or setting wild-
cards, that's probably a testament to the power of the program, but also
points to a certain level of complexity that wasn't always the case in
the OS9 version.

There are a number of OSX developers having a few problems with
scripting and working with the OSX Finder (the developers of Pathfinder
and Finder Window Manager to name a couple) so I don't think all the
weirdness is down to Quickeys, they're probably having to use kludgy
workarounds for some of the stuff they do.

However, as a former Quickeys OS9 owner I've been very happy with the
OSX version since Quickeys X2, and it's now up to X3. X1 was shaky, it
was the CE team simply trying to release something that worked and keep
themselves in business IMHO, but that's all in the past, X2 and X3 I've
found invaluable, like many, I get a massive productivity boost from the
simple shortcuts, and in particular from lengthy multi-step macros that
have earned me many a tea-break while Quickeys does the donkey work.

I always open EPS files in Illustrator CS and re-save. We've found the
files produced are much more compatible. 

One thing Illustrator does have that Finale doesn't is a really good
scriptable export suite. I run my EPS files through Illustrator using an
AppleScript adapted from one found in Adobe Illustrator Scripting by
Ethan Wilde. You can do a similar thing in Windows using VBScript IIRC.

[Finale] Quickeys Question

Seem to be having a nightmare with Quickeys today.

All I'm trying to do is the following:

File  Page Format
Format for  HP Laserjet
Paper size  A4

What's strange is that Quickeys recognises and highlights the Settings
menu in the Page Format dialogue box, but not the other two menus.

None of my usual tricks seems to work here, does anyone else get the
same thing? Does anyone have a solution?

The development process at MM was obviously broken in some way for 
such a serious bug to make it into shipping code. It's one thing for 
an installer to have a problem (and that got through due to 
inadequate testing, too), it's entirely another for the data loss bug 
to have slipped through.

About the installer problem.

The symptom was loss of preferences if I remember. Now, most beta
testers will test in a fresh install, not in their regular account,
NOD's are full of disclaimers against data loss. Just goes to show the
testers aren't all nuts if you ask me.

First test with Finale 2006b and an important bug! Really, it's the  
first thing I did when I opened 2006b.
Just wanted to test the Time signature tool improvement and apply a  
time signature to a measure with an existing document (a copy of it  
of course).
Nothing happens and I am at the end of the document.
I try somewhere else: after clicking on a measure to change the time  
sign, the change is applied two measure later.
Strange, isn't it?

2005 the insertion frame will move to the staff below.

... and there's no keyboard shortcut other than to lower by a semitone.
On occasion I've done a rapid series of either - or + (to lower or
raise a semitone) followed each to by a 9 to change the enharmonic ...
this has a vaguely similar effect and looks like this ...

or 
+9+9+9+9+9+9

... totally mad.

Also, you can just grab the note with a mouse-click-drag and constrain
it's movement with shift. 

Both are a bit of a kludge, there ought to be a way to move a note up or
down diatonically. Of course this is where someone tells me how to do it
and I die of embarrassment.

loads of double sided copies with no problems. It is quite loud though,

Sorry Dennis, I speed read your question.

Are you sure it's the paper? I've only ever used 80gsm, I tried to
source some heavier A3 at a reasonable price a while back and it all
seemed outrageously overpriced. What weight are you using there? Maybe I
should buy a few sheets of heavy from a repro house to test before I go
and buy loads of the stuff!

I get something similar to this and have fixed it by lowering the Space
Pages More Than x% Full setting in Space Systems Evenly. I always want
them done. For some reason I don't think that setting always gets it right?!

If future Macs are indeed dual boot windows machines, then MM is 
definitely not cutting off a third of its installed base.

You're dwelling way too much on this dual boot idea. The fact that
you'll be able to boot into Windows natively on an x86 based Mac is an
interesting but mainly irrelevant point to the average Mac user.

Given the choice between using Finale Windows in a dual boot Mac/Win
environment that would necessitate rebooting into Windows (and even
having to have Windows on my machine), or switching to Sibelius Mac,
well even I would go to Sibelius! I don't say something like that lightly.

I believe that MM will develop for Mac+Intel, but on this occasion,
playing their cards close to their chest is serious error. If they're
not careful, someone will coin the term the MakeMusic effect, being
the exact opposite of the Osbourne effect - users could drop the product
as they see no future in it, when a speedy announcement clarifying the
fact that they're busy squirrelling away on a port would in fact create
a buzz of excitement ...

Well, it seems you printer driver doesn't support custom paper sizes. I 
just checked, and my HP 6MP does support them.

It's nothing to do with the OS, though, it's your printer and its driver 
that have limitations. Do you have the newest driver?

I'm not sure which OS you're on, but I have an HP 5si MX, and in MacOS
10.4.3 the printer specific print options need to be set, and this
appears just after you have chosen to print with COMMAND + P. Here's a
screenshot of the options that I see in the print dialogue ...

That might certainly make a dual-boot scenario more appealing to Mac 
users who may wish to see what the Windows world has to offer.

I would have thought that most mac users have experience of using
windows anyway (workplace, school etc). If Mac users wanted to use
windows they would already have done it, after all, they have to pay a
premium to use MacOS as it is - mac hardware is generally more
expensive, it's a choice that isn't taken lightly, particularly in the
UK where the price differential is much more marked.

It's an interesting scenario you propose though, and made me wonder if
MacOS could be issued as a 30 day trial that worked on any x86 machine,
but if you wanted to use it beyond that you'd have to buy Mac hardware.

But what if you *don't* have to reboot? What if (by installing Virtual 
PC) you could double click an icon just as you do now, and it opened a 
Finale doc window just as it does now. No muss, no fuss, and no reboot. 
At what point does your refusal even to consider installing Win on your 
machine begins to look more like stubborn bigotry than anything pragmatic?

windows and VPC. That's not cheap, and it isn't really no mess and no fuss. 

I'm not at all anti-windows, I've used it in the past. What I'm
definitely against though is the hassle of running 2 OS or 2 OS and an

This strikes me as arbitrary. Virtual PC does not take up any 
significant processor cycles, unless you are running a Win program, so 
the only practical objection would be A) the cost or B) the disk space. 
Cross-grading Fin from Mac to Win is no more costly than any Fin 
upgrade. They come on the same disc. Virtual PC does have an associated 
cost (c. $200 last time I checked), most of which is the Win license. I 
can accept cost as an objection, but not disc space, and not the 
nebulous objection quoted above.

I don't really think I need to explain why configuring an OS within an
emulator in another OS is unattractive. I've used Virtual PC with Win 98
SE, Win XP and Win 2000 - it's buggy and has a tremendous performance
hit, things don't work at anything like native windows speed.

It also absolutely requires you to learn and manage another OS, another
whole font library etc. etc. - when you are your own IT department
there's a lot to be said for keeping it simple.

Where does this idea comes from that VPC functions only as a window
server? (and I use the term in a unix sense) - it doesn't, and it
doesn't make an argument to pretend that one day it might, as I doubt it
ever will.

Well, if you think about it, it can't really do that. What if an OS X 
app and a VPC app try to access the same hardware or memory at the 
same time? VPC would always have to be a slave of OS X. Now, it could 
be that Intel underneath OS X could provide enough performance 
improvement to make VPC much snappier, but I don't think there'd ever 
be any real possibility of VPC being able to go direct to the 
hardware, since VPC wouldn't know anything about what OS X is doing.

Has anyone used virtual PC on windows to run a different version of
windows? It's entirely possible. A friend of mine has done it using a
very fast machine with a huge amount of RAM etc. and said the
performance was Pants. This must be because even in a Win/Win
situation (unintentional pun!) the virtual machine within Virtual PC is
interfacing with a software emulation of a generic graphics card rather
than with the actual graphics card installed in the machine, and I think
the same is true of everything else, VPC probably even pretends to be a
generic BIOS, it's one mammoth abstraction layer even running within the
same architecture.

Sorry Johannes if this is going round and round a bit, having used VPC,
lots of versions of windows, running a red hat web server and having
used dual boot OS9 and OSx into unix and linux, I'm fascinated, and also
NEVER want to have to do it again - all that experimentation taught me a
thing or two about the simple beauty of MacOS, maybe it's not the
fastest or most tweakable system, but it sure is slick!).

[Finale] Making Fonts

I've been looking at Fontographer and FontLab recently, it seems
MacroMedia sold Fontographer on to FontLab and they've released it for
OSX. Does anyone have any practical experience of the two, and offer
some advice on their relative merits? Is FontLab just for serious font
geeks? Is it worth the extra cash?

It might, but then they also allow Mac Users to make a two step, 
painless move to pure Windows computers. Once the first step is taken 
(ie a dual boot Mac/Win machine), I foresee the market doing its thing 
quickly. MacUsers will end up using more Win Software (simply out of 
necessity at first), developers will stop developing Mac applications, 
users will be tempted by cheaper hardware (currently you can get more 
powerful notebooks for a fraction of the price of a Powerbook), and 
eventually leave the Mac platform. I actually see myself going that way, 
unless there are good enough reasons (ie software) to keep me on the Mac 
(and I prefer OS X by many miles over Win). 

So stay on Mac if you like it, everyone else will, I don't think this
catastrophic vision of yours will ever happen.
