Re: [Finale] Copy and paste

2017-12-19 Thread Christopher Smith
This is a new “feature” that is turned on by default in the new versions. It
might be useful for an amateur who doesn’t know instrument/voice ranges, but
for pros it’s annoying as heck.

To turn it off, Finale menu>Preferences>Edit, uncheck “Respect instrument
ranges when copying or changing instruments”. Save preferences and it will
never bother you again… until the next update.

[Finale] Copy and paste

2017-12-19 Thread Lawrence David Eden
Fellow Listers,

I recently started using FinaleMac 25 (I upgraded from 2K11) and I have a
question about copy and paste.
Finale seems to be applying an octave transposition when I paste. I don’t know
why this is, but I want it to stop.
Clearly, I have something set wrong in my program options…or is it something
else?

I look forward to reading your replies and wish you all a fine holiday season.

Re: [Finale] Copy and Paste Text Boxes

2006-10-26 Thread Noel Stoutenburg

Trent J:

I've got a couple of items with figured bass that I eventually intend to
set in Finale. When I get to these, I expect to follow the suggestion
in the Finale Users guide about using the facilities of the Chord tool
to try to implement the figured bass. I expect that this will involve
developing new chord libraries, and if there is a good tutorial on this,
I have yet to find it. More daunting, I don't know of anyone who has
been happy with the results that they have obtained setting Figured Bass
in any method. Intuitively, it seems to me that the chord tool is
probably the way to go, but I suspect those most knowledgeable about the
chord tool have are least interested in figured bass, and those most
interested in figured bass are perhaps among the least interested in the
chord tool. One of the reasons in favor of my using the chord tool, is
that the chord tool will support playback while text blocks do not.
While articulation and expression tools also affect playback, I don't
know if these tools can effectively manage figured bass.

A couple of months ago, I bought my first digital camera, and I've been
spending some time looking at the digital processing of images, in
particular the amount of meta-data that is recorded in and for digital
images. One of the reasons I was interested in this, is that I had
begun approaching the same thing with Finale. Finale already has a
small amount built in, in the form of the file info, the title,
composer, copyright info, c. But it has been an irritation of mine,
probably since 2k1 (which was just a couple of months after I started
using Finale; I bought 2k in May, and 2k1 came out in August) that
Finale does not have more meta data designed in than it does. Since
most of my work has been choral, I would have liked metadata for source
/ lyricist, and translator. And while there was some improvement in the
amount of file info over the years, I still find it insufficient, to
the point that a couple of years ago, I decided to abandon the set-up
wizard, in favor of use of more templates as starting points for
compositions. What I have evolved at this point, is that the first
couple of pages at the very beginning of my file with all of the text
blocks I need for a piece of choral music. There are predefined blocks
for headers, footers, page numbers, Titles, Subtitles, Composer,
Arranger, Lyricist / translator, dedication line, publisher, c. I also
include special information about the file in these pages: a block
usually details printer settings, how the paper is oriented, what the
settings in the dialog are, and in what order the pages are printed,
and if there is a reference to a graphic, a text block on these pages
details where the graphic is found, and where it is in my file system.
It is trivial in this instance to add style blocks if I need one for
special purposes, where the contents can be copied into a real text
block that might be placed later in the score.

It seems to me that one thing which might be a time saver in what you
are attempting to do is to adjust your work flow procedures. If you put
all of the figured bass in at one time, just before you start, you can
change the default text block font to the font and size you prefer for
figured bass, and then when you are done entering the figured bass,
change the default fonts back.

If you are talking baroque figured bass, with special symbols like
crossed out numbers etc, forget the chord tool, you would regret it. I
have tried this years ago, but it is a complete nightmare.

I have since only used lyrics, with a special font, not unlike Ansgar
Krause's Finale Figured Bass, but optimized in such a way that it can be
used left alligned, allowing to enter things like

6 5
4 3

under one note using hard spaces.

Your best bet in my opinion is to either follow Ansgar's instructions
and use his font, or design your own (in a font editor).

Write to MM and request more fields, like I have several times. This
would also allow an easier integration of house styles in Finale.

I haven't got the time to try this right now, but I believe this can be
done using the mass edit tool, and copying only the measure attached
text blocks. I am not quite sure what the procedure is in 2k5, since the
copying interface has changed in 2k6 I believe, but it is still
possible, I think.

However, I seriously doubt that using measure attached text blocks for
figured bass is in any way practical. Currently, lyrics is the way to
go. In the future I am still hoping that MM will include a figured bass
mode in the chord tool, but at the moment the chord tool is completely
useless for serious figured bass entry.

I have been through all the possibilities for figured bass in Finale,
and the only practical way imo is to use the lyrics tool with a special
font. See my other post.

2006-10-26 Thread Trent Johnston
Thanks everyone for your help.

Yes I'm using Ansgar Krause's Font. As you said your email using lyrics
means that a figured symbol can only be over (or under) a note. Text boxes
are relatively quick especially since your Mass Edit suggestion I just paste
them in click in the box and change the figure and drag exactly where I want
them.

Yes, no figured bass coming from Sibelius was a bit of shock.. the figured
bass feature in Sibelius is only another lyric/text tool that either jumps
to the next note or beat in bar.

Do ghost rests or notes affect spacing? If they don't then this would be a
good method.

I've tried with lyrics before - I put the figured bass into the - chorus -
since this isn't a rock song then a chorus style is pretty useless to
perfect for the figured bass.

Johannes idea of a changed font is worth looking at to... since figured
progressions on the same note need to aligned the same.

[Finale] Copy and Paste Text Boxes

2006-10-25 Thread Trent Johnston
Hello everyone,

Is there a way in either Finale 2005 (current version I'm using) or the new
2007 to copy and paste measure based text boxes. I can't seem to find a way
to do this. Selecting a text box only allows me to edit it not copy and
paste it somewhere else.

Any help appreciated.

Not as far as I know. My usual work-around is to select and open the
box I want to copy, copy the contents of the Edit text dialog box, then
close the dialog, and close the text block. I move to the page and
location where I want to copy the box to, open a new box, and paste in
the contents.

On the other hand, if you want to move instead of copy the text
block, this is easily done in the text block attributes dialog: simply
determine the values of the text block in the new location, open the
text block attributes dialog box of the block you wish to move, and
enter the desired location (page, location on the page, and offsets)
into the dialog box.

Re: [Finale] Copy and Paste Text Boxes

2006-10-25 Thread Trent J

Thanks Noel.

It's a strange ommission. Makes it very hard when using a lot a text boxes
especially if they have specific fonts and sizes. It would be much easier to
create one text box in the style and then copy and paste them as needed then
the user would only have to edit the information but font and size would be
already set.

I was hoping that this would be a simplier way of entering a figured bass..
a bit easier than using lyrics as I could put the figures anywhere on the
measure and not only associated with a note .. a limitation when using
lyrics.

I'll try the reverse... copying the text or first figure and then creating a
text box and paste the figure then over-write with the new. Just as long as
the font and size information stays with the copied and pasted information.
