Re: [Flashcoders] loading XML as string via parseXml: how to avoid "undefined"? (onParseComplete??!

2006-03-17 Thread GregoryN
Hello Ken,

As you don't LOAD anything, menu_xml.getBytesTotal() will return
undefined - it's OK.
You can either set interval or onEnterFrame function to check the ned
of parsing and then delete/clear onEnterFrame/interval.

Also, check spelling of mymenuxml (quotes, ";" etc)

Also, I'd suggest to use just:
//=== code
mymenuxml = "your xml string";
menu_xml = new XML(mymenuxml);
menu_xml.ignoreWhite = true;

Re: [Flashcoders] Cannot stop loaded movie

2006-03-17 Thread Helen Triolo
What Marc said, plus use onLoadInit instead of onLoadComplete. From the
help docs:

"It's important to understand the difference between
MovieClipLoader.onLoadComplete and MovieClipLoader.onLoadInit. The
onLoadComplete event is called after the SWF, JPEG, GIF, or PNG file
loads, but before the application is initialized. At this point, it is
impossible to access the loaded movie clip's methods and properties, and
therefore you cannot call a function, move to a specific frame, and so
on. In most situations, it's better to use the onLoadInit event instead,
which is called after the content is loaded and fully initialized."

The really bizarre thing is that this works just fine if I run the

If I run the SWF inside the standalone player (or inside a browser

I cannot make sense of this. I've tried searching through the list,

Re: [Flashcoders] loading XML as string via parseXml: how to avoid"undefined"? (onParseComplete??!)

2006-03-17 Thread Michael Bedar
xml.parseXML is not an asynchronous event like xml.load, so like
jesse said, you have no need of a loader,

so, after you call parseXML, you can start using the xml object to
read your data on the next line.

On Mar 17, 2006, at 8:37 PM, JesterXL wrote:

You aren't downloading anything. You are building the XML object

Flash. Therefore, since you never loaded anything, you never
started a
download. Since you never started a download, you'll never get a
valid

result from getBytesTotal/getBytesLoaded, nor do you need to.

Subject: [Flashcoders] loading XML as string via parseXml: how to
avoid"undefined"? (onParseComplete??!)

I'm attempting to manually load an XML object via a string. I
appear to be

successfully completing this process: my XML is well-formed, and
myxmlobject.toString() returns a result, as do attempts to traverse
the

attributes and nodes.

What isn't working is the XML object itself when I attempt to use
it to

build a kirupa.com-style XML menu, or when I attempt to run the
.getBytesTotal() method on the object. My menuing and code works
just fine
when I load the same XML from an external file and set up an onLoad
event,
but it breaks when I use the XML as a string and attempt parseXml.
The code

copied below returns "undefined" on the trace.

What I think I may be running into is Flash attempting to use the
object
before it is parsed and loaded into memory, and I need the
equivalent of
"onParseComplete". Or maybe it's something else. Can anyone help on
this

puzzling problem?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

[Flashcoders] Flash 8 broken

2006-03-17 Thread Weyert de Boer
Since this afternoon my Flash 8 copy on my Mac is reluctant to export
movies. Even restarting Flash 8 or the mac doesn't help! Anyone know how
to fix this?

Try adding the listener to ld before loading the clip.

2006-03-17 Thread JesterXL
getBytesTotal is only used for tracking the downloading of a large amount of
XML.

You aren't downloading anything. You are building the XML object by hand in
Flash. Therefore, since you never loaded anything, you never started a
download. Since you never started a download, you'll never get a valid
result from getBytesTotal/getBytesLoaded, nor do you need to.

What I think I may be running into is Flash attempting to use the object

"onParseComplete". Or maybe it's something else. Can anyone help on this
puzzling problem?

You can check (and cache while you're at it) any file by using LoadVars:

fileExists.onLoad = mx.utils.Delegate.create(this, doCheck);
fileExists.load(file);

function doCheck(success:Boolean) {
if (success) trace("File "+file+" exists.");
else trace("File "+file+" does not exist.");

Re: [Flashcoders] File Exists - a better way?

2006-03-17 Thread Isaac Rivera

I backtracked on this thread...

I guess the questions are:

1) what are you trying to load?

2) what onLoad(success:Boolean) are you using?

Are you using the XML or LoadVars?

Assuming you are using the LoadVars, a more reasonable "timeout"
approach would be something like:

// code --
function fileExists() {}
function fileDoesNotExist() {}

var timeout:Number = 1; // 10 seconds...
var app:MovieClip = this;

var lv:LoadVars = new LoadVars();
lv.onLoad = function(success:Boolean) {
clearInterval(app.interval);
if (!success) {
app.fileDoesNotExist();
} else {
app.fileExists();
}
};

var startTime:Number = getTimer() + timeout;
lv.load(url);

var interval:Number = setInterval(function () {
var total:Number = app.lv.getBytesTotal();
if (total > 4) {
clearInterval(app.interval);
app.fileExists();
} else {
if (getTimer() >= app.startTime) {
clearInterval(app.interval);
app.fileDoesNotExist();
}
}
}, 25);

exteriorMenuBoard_mc.loadMovie(path + lang + "" + dtboarddesc + ".jpg");

Flash is tracing the famous "file not found message" in the output window
but that doesn't help me here.

[Flashcoders] Tool for Converting PPT to SWF

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good tools to convert PPT to SWF.
So far the best one I've found is Flash Printer. But I'd like to have
the flexibility of converting each frame of the PPT movie to a swf. And
it would be great if it would also maintain the animation.

Thanks!

Re: [Flashcoders] Issue with Masks in externally loaded SWFs?

2006-03-17 Thread Éric Thibault
I'm using mask inside loaded SWF but I have to be carefull of the
dimention of those loaded SWF because everything inside (and outside
it's root level) is visible on the loading SWF!

One thing I'm doing now is to mask my loader within my parent SWF and
load into that external SWF with their own mask. One of our graphist
always do external SWF the same size as the parent SWF... thus avoiding
the masked content to spill out onto the parent SWF.

I'm sure _someone_ has source to these ;-)

You could study the tutorial at
http://nodename.com/blog/2006/01/16/psyarks-displacementmapfilter-tutorial/
which covers the orthographic projection example on that page. Then you
could generalize the method by plugging in equations from the source
provided on the Java World Map Projections page referenced in the original
article at
http://nodename.com/blog/2006/01/11/prospects-for-immersive-panoramas-in-flash/
Just a suggestion...

callback1 = wsConn.ItemSearch( ??? );
callback1.onResult = function(result){

cover...
the wsdl needs my accesskeyid and also other params for the search...

Have you looked into onData instead? I believe it will allow you to

It stands to reason that if onLoad fires with success==false no file was
loaded anyway, so i don't see why you'd need a separate handler for
wether success is false NOW or success is false a little later.

onLoad(success){
if(success){
//handle file load
}else{
//handle error
}
}

I don't see the downside to this approach. Then again, i'm tired and
angry, so i might miss something.

Re: [Flashcoders] File Exists - a better way?

2006-03-17 Thread Ian Thomas
There's no Flash native hack as far as I know. The only obvious
solution I can think of is to call a server script - for example in
PHP something like:

Then use LoadVars to call the script, passing in the parameter 'file'
- which is a filename relative to the PHP script. Once LoadVars
returns, if the 'exists' parameter is false, the file doesn't exist -
and so on.

RE: [Flashcoders] Question for XML Style Junkies

2006-03-17 Thread jim
You cant have cdata or any tags inside an attribute, you should put this in
a child tag of its own.

Subject: [Flashcoders] Question for XML Style Junkies

My XML file takes the following form:

  ...etc. ...etc.

However, after I load it into Flash, it gets truncated to:

I am assuming the way I am using CDATA tags are throwing it off somehow.
For example, I have a CDATA tag inside an attribute value under the
Home/Panel/Panel[0]/Title attribute value and this is where it seems to
break. Is this bad form and/or causing Flash to choke? If not, what
could be causing this? If this is bad XML form, how would you
reorganize it to work in Flash?

---
FYI - FWIW:
I am loading the XML in a standard way:

var xmlObject = new XML();
xmlObject.ignoreWhite = true;
xmlObject.onLoad = Delegate.create(this, loadSuccess);
xmlObject.load("home.xml")

and the delegate function just moves the playhead once the file is
loaded - when I get to the frame after it's loaded, I do a trace on the
XML and see the truncation as described.

Ideas?

Re: [FlashCoders] remove BitmapData

2006-03-17 Thread Dimitrios Bendilas

I didn't know that about dispose. I guess you are right.
I changed my code and now I keep a reference of the
bitmap, so I can execute dispose() whenever I want.

Thanks guys,
Dimitrios

There is no getDepth() method for bitmapData Objects.

What's the problem with keeping a refrence to your bitmapData Objects? I
would argue that it's better practice to refrence them anyways, and as of
now, if you do not call dispose() and just remove MovieClips with bitmapData
attached, the bitmapData, as I know it, will remain in memory.

Thank you Johannes.

But what if I need to remove bitmaps only at a certain depth?
Because I really don't want to clear all BitmapData from the movieclip...

for (var e in clip)
{
if(clip[e] instanceof BitmapDAta)
{
clip[e].dispose();
}
}
i think that could work.

Re: [Flashcoders] Position objects evenly around ellipse

2006-03-17 Thread Danny Kodicek

Would anyone have a function, class, formula, idea whatever that would

allow me to calculate X and Y values to place an "n" number of movie
clips evenly spaced around an ellipse/oval shape? The number of clips
can vary based on external data. The ellipse would also have to be
calculated I suppose, but not actually drawn - the representation of it
would be a separate graphic.

'evenly spaced' is a slightly ambiguous phrase. It could either mean that
they are spaced with even angles (meaning that physically the clips at the
'pointy end' of the ellipse would be closer to each other) or that they are
spaced with equal arc lengths, or various other metrics.

I always find it easiest to think of an ellipse as a circle transformed by a
stretch and rotate. So I'd do it something like this:

for an ellipse with short radius (semiminor axis) a and long radius
(semimajor axis) b, centred on c, pointed along the unit vector v:
first place your clips evenly spaced around a unit circle: if there are N
clips then place clip i at (sin(i*2*pi/N), cos(i*2*pi/N))
then stretch the positions: multiply the x-axis by a and y-axis by b:
(a*sin(i*2*pi/N), b*cos(i*2*pi/N))

then rotate: move to i[2]*v+i[1]*normal(v)
then translate: add c to each point.

HTH
