 to reference the function..

One way would be to bind the tree's selected item to something in the Model,
and update that from the result handler.
Alternatives include moving the select function into a view handler registered
with the view and then using the Locator in the result handler, or passing a
reference to the view into the Event and storing it so the result handler can
call it.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Lost commit on data source with polling AMF

2006-09-14 Thread Jeff Vroom

I am checking into the hotfix process
right now. I have the fix working locally on a simple test case and
will run our test suite on this fix tonight.

We do currently have the limitation that
you have to merge before you commit or you get an
error. Theoretically, we could relax this constraint and let you merge
after the commit but I think it would hit the same stale conflict
problem if you ended up merging a change to an item after you had already
committed and resolved a conflict on that item.

So you are saying that if you call merge
followed by an immediate commit that you are still running into
problems with unmerged messages? Messages pushed from the server
will not be delivered until your code has finished running so if you call
merge() immediately followed by commit() the commit should only generate an
error if the merge caused a conflict. In that case, youd have to
resolve the conflict before you can commit anyway (we also require you to
resolve all conflicts before you can commit). If this doesnt match
what you are seeing, let me know.

Thanks for the responses, how long does it usually
take to implement a
hotfix?

We have been playing around with a datasource that has autocommit and
automerge set to false, but it appeared to be almost impossible to issue
merge() and commit() sequences without running into problems. Are there any
examples/tutorials on how to structure the code for a merge-resolve-commit
cycle with auto-commit and auto-merge turned off?

We found that sometimes the commit would throw an error because there were
pending merges, this despite the fact that a merge was just completed. I
presume this arose from a further push that arrived between the resolution
of the last conflict and the commit request. Is there a way to make this
operation atomic? By that I mean something like a mergeAndCommit() which
resolves all merges, locks the data source, and then commits.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]ups.com
wrote on 13/09/2006 02:13:27:

 What is happening here is that the latency introduced by the poll is
 causing the client to receive the response from its commit
before a
 previously queued pushed message to that client. By the time it
 receives the pushed message, it is stale - i.e. the previous
 version is not accurate anymore. We should be sending those queued
 messages to the client before the client processes the response to
 its operation. Thus the client would receive notification of the
 conflict two times in this case but it would be the same conflict so
 you would only have to resolve it once.

 The only workaround I can think of right now is to resolve that
 second (stale) conflict using acceptClient without reporting
it to
 the user. The problem though is knowing when this is a stale
 conflict versus a real new conflict. There is a timestamp in the
 message which theoretically could be used to detect that but it is
 pretty tricky so I'm not sure I'd recommend trying this workaround.
 I am working on a fix now... once it is ready we could investigate
 the possibility of turning it into a hotfix.

 Sorry for the problems and thanks for reporting this issue.

 Jeff

[flexcoders] Re: Deploying a Flex Application making rpc.remoting calls

2006-09-14 Thread paromitadey
Hello Matt,

Thank you for your advice and suggestion and I am sorry for not able
to reply back earlier.

You are right I am using Flex Builder to compile. In Flex Builder
compiler properties dialog box, I have added the -services-config
argument along with the default argument '-locale en_US' separated
by comma. The aruguments are as follows -

-locale en_US,-services-config. Other settings are set to default
values.

After compilation, when I run the application from the browser, by
calling the html wrapper file, it does not make the remote object
call. But once if I directly run the mxml file from the browser, it
executes the remote call and thereafter whenever the html wrapper is
made to run, it calls the java remote object and executes properly.
The remote object calls a java object that writes an xml file in the
file system, which is further used by flex datadriven controls.

I had also tried to add the services valu directly in the flex-
config.xml file but that too did not show correct results.

servicesservices-config.xml/services

I am sure that I am following some wrong process for compilation?
But I am unable to decipher the problem.

Please advice and help.

Thanks and Regards,
Paromita

 It runs fine when I make a http request call to the mxml file

[flexcoders] Problem with Application build and compile

2006-09-14 Thread paromitadey
Hello All,

While building the project, if Build Automatically is selected under
the Project menu, the project is supposed to build while we perform
a save operation. The build process is indicated at the Flex Builder
status bar right hand bottom corner.

In my case this build indication is showed at times but most of the
time it does not show any indication. If I deselect the Build
automatically option and forcefully try to build the project using
Build All or Build Project, again at times it shows the Build
process dialog box or process inidication at the status bar, but
again mostly it doesnot show anything.
At times the project gets build fine even though the build
indication is not shown but many a times it is not building the
project properly and I am getting erroneous results.

What may be the reason? I am working on an application which is
using XMLListCollections ArrayCollections, lots of databinding and
custom components etc. Could it be a memory issue? Do I need to do
any specific setting changes for project build and compilation?

Please advise.

Regards,

Paromita

John:

I'm a little confused by your reply. Could you educate me why you are using WS's if you feel you could use remoting? Also, JSON plugs right into Web Services. It simply serializes and deserializes the data to allow for easy transfers of data types.

Without seeing the code, the first error seems E4X related. I'm not sure if this will help you with the second error, but natively Flex doesn't accept .Net datasets without receiving this error. If that's the case, you can solve this by casting the dataset to a class that is returned by the webservice. Here's an
ASP.Net webservice code sample:

Re: [flexcoders] adding control bar to panel programitically

2006-09-14 Thread Harish Sivaramakrishnan

Hi,Here is a partial solution to ur issue. The problem here is when you add a controlbar to the Panel as a child, you also need to tell the panel that the added Child is of the type controlBar. Once this property is set, the Panel itself takes care of layouting the controlbar at the required position. However adding a chind to programmatically added controlbar seems to be broken, I have logged a bug into the adobe bugbase to track this. In the meanwhile modify your
ControlBarInPanel.as with the following code.The only modifications that i have done is extending the class from Panel and not from Canvas.The code:package{ import mx.containers.Canvas
; import mx.containers.Panel; import mx.containers.ControlBar; import mx.controls.Button; import mx.events.FlexEvent; public class ControlBarInPanel extends Panel { public function ControlBarInPanel()
 { super(); addEventListener( FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE, handleCreationComplete ); }  private function handleCreationComplete( event:FlexEvent ):void
 {  } override protected function createChildren():void {  super.createChildren() var tb:Button = new Button(); tb.label = Test Button in Panel;
 var cb:ControlBar = new ControlBar(); var tb2:Button = new Button(); tb2.label = Test Button in Control Bar; cb.addChild( tb2 );
cb.includeInLayout=trueaddChild( tb ); addChild(tb) addChild(cb);   controlBar = cb;
 //cb.invalidateDisplayList() } }}Hope this helpsHarishOn 9/14/06, aaron smith

I've been just messing around with how to do things through code. It seems adding a ControlBar to a panel in code doesn't do the same thing as it does in mxml.here is my mostly code example:
MXML:?xml version=

 layout=vertical creationComplete=initApp()
 mx:Script  import ControlBarInPanel;private function initApp():void  {   var cbip:ControlBarInPanel = new ControlBarInPanel();   addChild( cbip );
  } /mx:Script/mx:ApplicationAS3:package{ import mx.containers.Canvas; import mx.containers.Panel; import mx.containers.ControlBar; import
mx.controls.Button; import mx.events.FlexEvent; public class ControlBarInPanel extends Canvas { public function ControlBarInPanel() { super(); addEventListener(
FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE, handleCreationComplete );  }private function handleCreationComplete( event:FlexEvent ):void  { percentWidth = 100;
   percentHeight = 100;   var tb:Button = new Button();   tb.label = Test Button in Panel;  var p:Panel = new Panel();   p.title = Test Control Bar in Panel;
   var cb:ControlBar = new ControlBar();  var tb2:Button = new Button();   tb2.label = Test Button in Control Bar;  addChild( p );
   p.addChild( tb ); p.addChild( cb ); cb.addChild( tb2 ); } }}this all works fine, but when the control bar gets added to the panel it is inside of the White content Area in the panel.
Now when I do the same thing but with MXML::?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8 ?mx:Application xmlns:mx=
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml
 layout=verticalmx:Canvas percentWidth=100 percentHeight=100  mx:Panel title=Test Control Bar in Panel  mx:Button label=Test Button in Panel /
  mx:ControlBar horizontalAlign=right   mx:Button label=Test Button in ControlBar /  /mx:ControlBar /mx:Panel/mx:Canvas
/mx:Applicationit puts the control bar under the white content area in a panel. what is going on behind the scenes in mxml that is causing the difference??

[flexcoders] FDS and web service.

2006-09-14 Thread secolaha
Hi all,
I have just started experimenting with FLex, and learned to my dismay
that you need FDS if you want to use authentication when calling a web
service.

This might not be such a big problem as the web service is hosted on
our weblogic server, and I have been able to install FDS and got the
examples running.

But now I am stuck on getting FDS talk to my web service.
I have search both the documentation and the web for som e good
examples but to no avail.

Does anyone know of a good tutorial or an example on how you go about
to set up flex so that it proxies my requests to my web service?

regards,
/Lars

[flexcoders] Error with Flex Builder

Hello All,

I am getting a strange error while working on the Flex Builder 2.0.
It displays a dialog box with the following text -

with an OK button.

Whenever this dialog box is given the Flex Builder application

[flexcoders] Re: Using objects in XML

2006-09-14 Thread kristian_wright2002
Solved!

Created a function:

private function createRepeaterData(label:String, id:String,
required:Boolean, selected:int, dataprovider:Array):void
{
xmlText = dataprovider/dataprovider;
for (var item:String in dataprovider)
{
xmlText.appendChild(infolabel{dataprovider[item].label}/labeldata{dataprovider[item].data}/data/info);
}
xmlPermissions.appendChild(combolabel{label}/labelid{id}/idrequired{required}/requiredselected{selected}/selected{xmlText}/combo);
}

and changed the Repeaters dataProvider to
{rpComboBox.currentItem.dataprovider.info}.

Works fine now!!

 Didn't work - just returned an empty combobox. Also, my labels and
 data are different (data is an int I use to query a DB, so it's
 meaningless as a selection choice).

 Thanks though!

 I've also tried looping through my array and placing values in a string:

 for (var item:int=0;itemarrARRAY.length;item++)
 {

strText=strText+data+arrARRAY[item].data+/datalabel+arrARRAY[item].label+/label;
 }

 and substituting {strText} for {arrARRAY} in my XML, but this again
 causes the creation of 1 selection of:

data1/datalabelValue1/labeldata2/datalabelValue2/label...

 At least the values are coming out now though, just all on one line
still!

 Any other thoughts?

[flexcoders] Re: adding control bar to panel programitically

2006-09-14 Thread gustavo.saume
Hello aaron,

i had the same problem recently...

you just have to change the order of you components when you add
them to the panel, as far as i know the controlBar has to be the
last one to be add in order to be under the white content area of
the panel, try the following...

p.addChild( tb );
cb.addChild( tb2 );
p.addChild( cb );
addChild( p );

and ill work fine.

 I've been just messing around with how to do things through code.
It seems
 adding a ControlBar to a panel in code doesn't do the same thing

 MXML:

 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
 mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml;
layout=vertical
 creationComplete=initApp()
 mx:Script
 import ControlBarInPanel;

 private function initApp():void

 var cbip:ControlBarInPanel = new ControlBarInPanel();
 addChild( cbip );
 }
 /mx:Script
 /mx:Application

 AS3:

 package
 {
 import mx.containers.Canvas;
 import mx.containers.Panel;
 import mx.containers.ControlBar;
 import mx.controls.Button;
 import mx.events.FlexEvent;

 public class ControlBarInPanel extends Canvas
 {
 public function ControlBarInPanel()
 {
 super();
 addEventListener( FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE,
 handleCreationComplete );
 }

 private function handleCreationComplete(
event:FlexEvent ):void
 {
 percentWidth = 100;
 percentHeight = 100;
 var tb:Button = new Button();
 tb.label = Test Button in Panel;

 var p:Panel = new Panel();
 p.title = Test Control Bar in Panel;

 var cb:ControlBar = new ControlBar();

 var tb2:Button = new Button();
 tb2.label = Test Button in Control Bar;

 addChild( p );
 p.addChild( tb );
 p.addChild( cb );
 cb.addChild( tb2 );
 }
 }
 }

 this all works fine, but when the control bar gets added to the
panel it is
 inside of the White content Area in the panel.

 Now when I do the same thing but with MXML::

 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8 ?
 mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml;
layout=vertical
 mx:Canvas percentWidth=100 percentHeight=100
 mx:Panel title=Test Control Bar in Panel
 mx:Button label=Test Button in Panel /
 mx:ControlBar horizontalAlign=right
 mx:Button label=Test Button in ControlBar /
 /mx:ControlBar
 /mx:Panel
 /mx:Canvas
 /mx:Application

 it puts the control bar under the white content area in a panel.

 what is going on behind the scenes in mxml that is causing the
difference??

Flex doesn't connect directly to a database. You will need to use a

[flexcoders] Gap between root level menu items

2006-09-14 Thread nischalpathania
I'm facing some issues with MenuBar tag. Let me know the workaround to
fix following issues.

1. How can I reduce the gap between root level menu items?

[flexcoders] Data synchronisation tip and tricks?

2006-09-14 Thread Paul Andrews
Most of the traffic conversation here seems to revolve around applications
that are essentially read-only or are behaving as though they are single
user.

Any tips and tricks to be found regarding the synchronisation of data in a
multi-user application involving a database.

For example (since hotel booking is a prominent example in the RIA world),
lets suppose I have two customers (Customer A and Cust B) trying to book the
same hotel room on the same day. Both see it as free in the RIA, Cust A
books it and now the other must know about it too, so effectively then
that's a straight refresh of Cust B display and the aborting of the booking
in progress.

Lets suppose my application allows Cust B to mark several days of room
bookings and (s)he has to hit 'book now' to commit to the booking. While
this is going on 'Cust A' has booked one of those days, so now I must merge
the updated database with the on-screen representation, so it's no longer a
straight replacement of the application display from the database, we're
having to merge.

Perhaps I'd best not even mention database locking and handling that in a
RIA.

Get the idea? I appreciate this isn't entirely Flex specific.

If there are tips and tricks/best practices in this area with regard to
Flex, I'd like to know about them before I re-invent the wheel!

Paul

 Subject: [flexcoders] what's going on with this Flex?!?

 Hi!

 I have some tabs in my flex application and when I want to
 access a text field on my last tab I get an error about null
 reference. If I click on this tab and try again then it
 works. I guess the error happens because the last tab isn't
 yet loaded. So please explain to me how can I solve this and
 how can someone build a sirious business application if there
 are such strange errors?

[flexcoders] Programmatic Skinning bug in Flex?

2006-09-14 Thread Chris Simeone

Hi All,I believe I found a Programmatic Skinning bug in Flex.Whenever I set the "borderSkin" property to a custom skin class, the flash player hangs in all browsers, the CPU peaks around 95% and memory is consumed rapidly.After waiting for about 10 minutes I get the following... [SWF] C:\Documents and Settings\Chris.Simeone\My Documents\Flex Builder 2\Skinning-Lessons\bin\gridBorders-debug.swf - 408,071 bytes after decompression undefined at mx.core::UIComponent/getClassStyleDeclarations()[C:\dev\GMC\sdk\frameworks\mx\core\UIComponent.as:6810] at mx.styles::StyleProtoChain$/mx.styles:StyleProtoChain::addProperties()[C:\dev\GMC\sdk\frameworks\mx\styles\StyleProtoChain.as:142] at mx.styles::StyleProtoChain$/mx.styles:StyleProtoChain::addProperties()[C:\dev\GMC\sdk\frameworks\mx\styles\StyleProtoChain.as:173](FYI: The previous error line is repeated 191 times)I tried tracing my custom skin class (by setting breakpoints) but none of the code ever fires - the debugger never goes into the code.When I remove this line from my CSS file - borderSkin:ClassReference('GridBorders'); - the application runs fine.To test this further, I grabbed the example on the bottom of this page where the "borderSkin" property is set on the VBox tag. The same exact error occurs.I tested other programmatic skinning examples that use upSkin, downSkin, etc and they all work fine. I only have this problem when assigning a skin class to the "borderSkin" property.Would someone please confirm this is bug? I followed the programmatic skins recipe to the letter.ThanksChris Simeone

[flexcoders] How to configure Java web service

2006-09-14 Thread Mozilla By

Hi all,

My Flex application
raises WSDLError “Type … not resolvable” with fault code “WSDL.BadType” at http://smbproxy.org:8085/services/XMLService?wsdl

I’ve found in docs that
Flex applications can interact with web services that define their interfaces
in a Web Services Description Language 1.1 (WSDL 1.1).

What default version of
WSDL does Java automatically generate? And how should I configure my web
service for correct working with Flex?

Thanks

RE: [flexcoders] Flex - Database

2006-09-14 Thread Tracy Spratt

If this functionality is the same as the
SQLXML functionality I played with a year or so ago, SQL Server provides an url
against which you can make SQL queries.

No other server-side code is requiered.
Obviously it is not direct, but it appears so.

I had a lot of problems with it at the
time and gave up, but if they got it working then it will be a very effective
answer to how do I query a database with Flex?

I think the OP really wants to talk directly to a database

 Hi,

  how to connect to database through flex.

 Thanks in advance.

Flex doesn't connect directly
to a database. You will need to use a
server-side technology and communicate with it using:

Http service, Web service, Flex Data Service, etc. - just check out the
tutorials on the adobe site and all over the web.

RE: [flexcoders] Data synchronisation tip and tricks?

2006-09-14 Thread Mike Anderson
Hello Paul -

This is an *excellent* topic to discuss, and I am glad you brought it
up. I too will face the same issues shortly - except mine revolve more
around inventory control - but still, the same problems apply (me
selling a product to a customer, when quite literally during the same
phone conversation, the product could be sold from right under my feet,
due to another sales person making a sale of the same product).

Lets hope this thread receives a lot of input, as it will help a LOT of
database developers who are writing RIA's -

Subject: [flexcoders] Data synchronisation tip and tricks?

Most of the traffic conversation here seems to revolve around
applications that are essentially read-only or are behaving as though
they are single user.

Any tips and tricks to be found regarding the synchronisation of data in
a multi-user application involving a database.

For example (since hotel booking is a prominent example in the RIA
world), lets suppose I have two customers (Customer A and Cust B) trying
to book the same hotel room on the same day. Both see it as free in the
RIA, Cust A books it and now the other must know about it too, so
effectively then that's a straight refresh of Cust B display and the
aborting of the booking in progress.

Lets suppose my application allows Cust B to mark several days of room
bookings and (s)he has to hit 'book now' to commit to the booking. While
this is going on 'Cust A' has booked one of those days, so now I must
merge the updated database with the on-screen representation, so it's no
longer a straight replacement of the application display from the
database, we're having to merge.

Perhaps I'd best not even mention database locking and handling that in
a RIA.

Get the idea? I appreciate this isn't entirely Flex specific.

If there are tips and tricks/best practices in this area with regard to
Flex, I'd like to know about them before I re-invent the wheel!

Paul

[flexcoders] How can I add a child element to an AreaSeries based on the render data?

2006-09-14 Thread Mark
I'm creating an AreaChart that has labels inside each area. Very few
of the series will be large enough to display a label so for
performance reasons I only want to add labels to those that are big
enough. It seems to me that the best place to create and add the
label is in createChildren(), however in examining the renderData, the
filterCache is null and all the bounds values in the cache are NaN.
Where would be the best place to add the label (as far as performance
goes)?

Thanks in advance for any help.

[flexcoders] Re: Data synchronisation tip and tricks?

2006-09-14 Thread bill_sahlas

Hi Paul,
If you haven' t done so already then you should download and install FDS 2.0 - This page has all the links as well as the synopsis of the Data Services that FDS 2.0 offers - http://www.adobe.com/products/flex/dataservices/

Data synchronization
Flex Data Services manages this important data synchronization process. It removes the complexity and error potential by providing a robust, high-performance data synchronization engine between client and server. It also can easily integrate with existing persistence solutions to provide an end-to-end solution.

RE: [flexcoders] Data synchronisation tip and tricks?

2006-09-14 Thread Jurgen Beck

Very good topic! I'm working on a RIA using Flex that
deals with a similar situation for an online ticketing system. Imagine two or
more folks selecting the same seat and wanting to purchase a ticket for it.
Essentially this is collision bound, unless it is being handled
carefully.

I see two solutions:

a) Use Flex Data Services and it's real-time features
of updating clients with the latest status on a specific room (in your
scenario). This will not completely eliminate the possibility that both
customers want to book the room at the exact same time. However, it will cut it
down quite significantly. Of course, there is some additional stuff going on
that we would have to take into consideration.

b) Use flags in the database records for each room as
to its availability and return a response to a customer when the booking is
committed. If someone else has beat them to it, then an error would be returned,
eventually halting the rest of the transaction based on the fact that the room
now is no longer available.

This is a very birds-eye view of what would need to
happen, at least in my mind. There may be other approaches and solutions to this
problem and I would be interested to hear them!

Jurgen

[flexcoders] Re: Installation recommendations

2006-09-14 Thread carl_steinhilber

I asked this question about a week ago, and didn't get any sort of
response.

Does really no one have any suggestions/comments? I really need to get
an install working in the slimest footprint possible.

Thanks again!

 I just got to the point where I thought I knew what I was doing
 when I did an install of Flex 1.5... and along comes v2.0, throwing
 me back to feeling like a complete installation newbie.

 Here's what I want to do:

 - serve a dev site on localhost:80 with Apache (specifically,
 WAMPserver 1.6)
 - connect ColdFusion to serve .cfm's and .cfc's from the webroot
 (port 80)
 - connect Flex 2.0 so that .mxml's are compiled at runtime (ala
 old school... the Compile application on the server when the
 page is viewed option), and well as be able to deploy generated
 .swf's from FlexBuilder (Compile application locally in Flex
 Builder)... again, all out of the webroot on port 80
 - set up FDS
 - set up Cairngorm 2.0

 My dev laptop isn't the beefiest thing on the block, so I'd like
 to go easy on resources (multiple instances of JRUN or other
 J2EE server probably would not be good).

 To that end I installed WAMP and installed ColdFusion with the
 integrated JRUN. That part works fine. But I'd like to deploy FDS
 directly into the JRUN that was installed with ColdFusion, rather
 than it's own separate beast. And the directory structure of the
 integrated JRUN is unusual when compared to other app servers;
 I'm not even sure where the deployment directory is, or how to
 map the various directories in the few installation docs that
 I've found to their JRUN counterparts.

 One kicker, I think, to this whole scenario is the fact that I
 want it all running off of port 80. While not essential, it
 would most closely mirror our production environment.

 Another kicker is massaging Apache to be able to serve .mxml files.
 I'm not even sure how to do that. Seeing as how there's no Flex
 server like there was with 1.5... what connector do I configure
 Apache to send .mxml to? FDS? Or is this not even possible anymore?

 Can anybody help with a step-by-step of put this in this
 directory, or provide a link to same?
 Or does anyone have a better suggestion for creating a slim
 (relatively) dev server with the above functionality?

 Thanks in advance!

RE: [flexcoders] criticla problem charting component - coding axis

Hi Olivier. it's hard to diagnose your problem, or
even what behavior you're seeing, without a more details description of what
you're trying to do, what you're doing, and what the actual behavior you're
seeing is. Sample code would help too.

Flex 1, or Flex 2?

[flexcoders] Re: criticla problem charting component - coding axis

2006-09-14 Thread olivier
Hi,

I have to detail my problem.
I'm creating a component full actionscript. This component create a
CartesianChart adding some functionalities.

here is the source code
var tAxis:DateTimeAxis=new DateTimeAxis();
tAxis.alignLabelsToUnits=true;
tAxis.autoAdjust=true;
tAxis.dataUnits=minutes;
tAxis.labelUnits=days;
tAxis.displayLocalTime=true;
tAxis.baseAtZero=false;
this.horizontalAxis=tAxis;

var lAxis:LinearAxis=new LinearAxis();
lAxis.alignLabelsToInterval=true;
lAxis.autoAdjust=true;
lAxis.baseAtZero=false;

this.verticalAxis=lAxis;
var slAxis:LinearAxis=new LinearAxis();
slAxis.alignLabelsToInterval=true;
slAxis.autoAdjust=true;
slAxis.baseAtZero=false;
this.secondVerticalAxis=slAxis;

this.secondVerticalAxisRenderer=new AxisRenderer();

For informations, after this code, I retrieve the series (line).

The baseAtZero doesn't work.

I've tried an other sample custom chart and it wors properly BUT the
baseAtZero property can NOT be modified at run time.

Here is the code

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml;
layout=absolute xmlns:local=*
mx:Script
![CDATA[
import mx.charts.LinearAxis;
function test():void{
//var t:LinearAxis=TestAxis
(r).nChart.verticalAxis;
LinearAxis(TestAxis
(r).nChart.verticalAxis).baseAtZero=true;
LinearAxis(TestAxis
(r).nChart.verticalAxis).update();

}
]]
/mx:Script
local:TestAxis id=r/
mx:Button x=147 y=432 label=Button click=test()/
/mx:Application

Thank in advance, it is very critical for me

When I remove this line from my CSS file - borderSkin:ClassReference('GridBorders'); - the application runs fine. To test this further, I grabbed the example on the bottom of this page http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/2/docs/0816.html where the "borderSkin" property is set on the VBox tag. The same exact error occurs. I tested other programmatic skinning examples that use upSkin, downSkin, etc and they all work fine. I only have this problem when assigning a skin class to the "borderSkin" property. Would someone please confirm this is bug? I followed the programmatic skins recipe to the letter. Thanks Chris Simeone

[flexcoders] Re: Data synchronisation tip and tricks?

2006-09-14 Thread jbeck_sound
Very good topic! I'm working on a RIA using Flex that deals with a
similar situation for an online ticketing system. Imagine two or more
folks selecting the same seat and wanting to purchase a ticket for it.
Essentially this is collision bound, unless it is being handled carefully.

I see two solutions:

a) Use Flex Data Services and it's real-time features of updating
clients with the latest status on a specific room (in your scenario).
This will not completely eliminate the possibility that both customers
want to book the room at the exact same time. However, it will cut it
down quite significantly. Of course, there is some additional stuff
going on that we would have to take into consideration.

b) Use flags in the database records for each room as to its
availability and return a response to a customer when the booking is
committed. If someone else has beat them to it, then an error would be
returned, eventually halting the rest of the transaction based on the
fact that the room now is no longer available.

This is a very birds-eye view of what would need to happen, at least
in my mind. There may be other approaches and solutions to this
problem and I would be interested to hear them!

Jurgen

 Most of the traffic conversation here seems to revolve around

 Any tips and tricks to be found regarding the synchronisation of
data in a
 multi-user application involving a database.

 For example (since hotel booking is a prominent example in the RIA
world),
 lets suppose I have two customers (Customer A and Cust B) trying to
book the
 same hotel room on the same day. Both see it as free in the RIA, Cust A
 books it and now the other must know about it too, so effectively then
 that's a straight refresh of Cust B display and the aborting of the
booking
 in progress.

 Lets suppose my application allows Cust B to mark several days of room
 bookings and (s)he has to hit 'book now' to commit to the booking. While
 this is going on 'Cust A' has booked one of those days, so now I
must merge
 the updated database with the on-screen representation, so it's no
longer a
 straight replacement of the application display from the database, we're
 having to merge.

 Perhaps I'd best not even mention database locking and handling that
in a
 RIA.

 Get the idea? I appreciate this isn't entirely Flex specific.

 If there are tips and tricks/best practices in this area with regard to
 Flex, I'd like to know about them before I re-invent the wheel!

[flexcoders] drag only CERTAIN items from a list?

2006-09-14 Thread Clare Todd

I have a tree for a training site.

It has Courses who have CourseInstance
children:

info
course title="Cooking 101"
courseinstance location="Houston"
date="02/11/1974" /

courseinstance location="Chicago"
date="12/23/2007" /
/course
...

I want people to be able to drag items off the tree
and into a List (think of a shopping cart). I ONLY want them to be able to
drag off the INSTANCES, not the course "container".

I swear I saw something on the web about
conditional dragging, but can't find it anywhere, and am not too clear how to do
it with the Tree?

Thanks!

RE: [flexcoders] How can I add a child element to an AreaSeries based on the render data?

2006-09-14 Thread Ely Greenfield

Hi Mark. createChildren() is the right place for a compnent
to create 'static' children. But dynamic children...i.e. children that are
created or destroyed based on some runtime information, like amount of data,
size on screen, etc...need to be created elsewhere.

In general, I would reccomend custom components
create/destroy dynamic children in their commitProperties() function. This is
because adding/removing children usually means the component needs to be
re-measured. Doing it in commitProperties means you do it before any pending
measurement happens, and don't end up with unnecessary extra measurement
passes.

Charts, however, don't have a natural measured
size. So the various series types
create and destroy their children as necessary in their updateDisplayList()
function. At that point, you can be sure your data is all up to
date.

Ely.

[flexcoders] Re-draw parent when child size changes

2006-09-14 Thread Battershall, Jeff
I'm having trouble getting this to work in a custom component...

I want to show and hide a child object (a group of checkboxes in its own
custom component) on state change of the parent (a panel) and have the
panel re-calcuate its correct height with the re-sized sub-component and
re-draw itself to the correct height.

I'm sure I can laboriously figure this one out but it seems that I
should be able to get this done properly by using the correct series
of events and methods of the parent container object.

[flexcoders] Re: How can I add a child element to an AreaSeries based on the render data?

2006-09-14 Thread Mark
Thanks for your response Ely. Is there any concern with a circular
reference? What I mean is if I call addChild in updateDisplayList
that will call invalidateDisplayList, which will ultimately call
updateDisplayList again, right? If I make my child creation code
conditional (so that it only runs the first time I go through
updateDisplayList) will that be enough to avoid the loop?

thanks,
Mark Haugen

 'static' children. But dynamic children...i.e. children that are created
 or destroyed based on some runtime information, like amount of data,
 size on screen, etc...need to be created elsewhere.

 In general, I would reccomend custom components create/destroy dynamic
 children in their commitProperties() function. This is because
 adding/removing children usually means the component needs to be
 re-measured. Doing it in commitProperties means you do it before any
 pending measurement happens, and don't end up with unnecessary extra
 measurement passes.

 Charts, however, don't have a natural measured size. So the various
 series types create and destroy their children as necessary in their
 updateDisplayList() function. At that point, you can be sure your data
 is all up to date.

Re: [flexcoders] Flex - Database

2006-09-14 Thread Rogerio Gonzalez

Hi Tracy and others...
I had a lot of problems with it at the
time and gave up, but if they got it working then it will be a very effective
answer to "how do I query a database with Flex?"I have troubles with that in past too (Flash + SQL + IIS) with security issues.
This time, the MS seems to improve some things on SQL2005 for webservices and such (xml too).I am testing some things with that, when it´s done I post here. But seems nice :PLike you say, it´s not direct, but is pretty more likely then use PHP or ASP or what ever just to do an Query.

Re: [flexcoders] Flex - Database

2006-09-14 Thread greg h

Sudharshan,

I concur with Paul's intial post. Database driven Flex
applications are generally at least a 3-tier architecture. 1) UI
= Flex; 2) Database = ?; 3) Middle tier (aka application server) = ?.

Generally the middle tier is an http server. However, in the case of mx:RemoteObjects it is an AMF server.

The SQL2005 issues raised by Tracy and Roger are a case where the database now bundles in http services.

For a very broad view of how to get data into Flex, following is a link
for a Jeff Tapper article that does a good job comparing and
contrasting the options (note: the article is from the Flash era
but is still relevant to Flex 2):
http://www.devx.com/webdev/Article/21803/0/page/1

Adobe has made the ColdFusion application server very Flex
friendly. You can find videos demonstrating some Flex Builder 2
wizards for creating ColdFusion/Flex 2 applications using
mx:RemoteObject here:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/coldfusion/articles/wizards.html

Flex 2 certainly integrates well with other application servers
too. Flex 2 is certainly very Java friendly, and there is an
active PHP project AMFPHP for that application server.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Data synchronisation tip and tricks?

2006-09-14 Thread Paul Andrews
To be honest, this is old-hat for database programmers, yet it's rarely
discussed in Flex/Flash circles and largely ignored in most web discussion.
Things tend to move up a notch in complexity once you have to consider
multiple users and databases.

Usually I tend to favour optimistic locking schemes on the database since
they don't cause problems with interactive users (send me a PM and I'll try
and explain it if you aren't already aware).

The real issue is that potentially with multiple users (with or without a
database) data can be changing data underfoot, so there are a few issues.

1) protecting data from unprotected updates that would lose or corrupt data;
2) keeping the user interface updated with changes made by other
users/processes (which means merging the new data with what's already
presented to the user)

Using flags in a database to indicate what's going on in the user interface
is to be avoided. The particular danger with flag setting in a database to
indicate what's happening in the user interface is that there will be cases
where the user interface will not complete it's work leaving the database
with flags set indicating some operation is happening when it isn't.

This could be a long discussion..

I was hoping for a few war stories or snappy techniques.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: How can I add a child element to an AreaSeries based on the render data?

2006-09-14 Thread Ely Greenfield

Hi Mark. I would make your child creation code cache
regardless of circularity reasons, for performance concerns. I don't
believe adding a child automatically invalidates your display list. I'm pretty
sure it _does_ invalidate measurement, which then _potentially_ invalidates
display. But the built in series classes won't invalidate their display due to a
measurement.

Ely.

Thanks for your response Ely. Is there any concern with a
circularreference? What I mean is if I call addChild in
updateDisplayListthat will call invalidateDisplayList, which will
ultimately callupdateDisplayList again, right? If I make my child creation

throughupdateDisplayList) will that be enough to avoid the

  Hi Mark. createChildren() is the right place for a

created elsewhere. In general, I would reccomend custom
components create/destroy dynamic children in their
commitProperties() function. This is because adding/removing
children usually means the component needs to be re-measured. Doing it
in commitProperties means you do it before any pending measurement
happens, and don't end up with unnecessary extra measurement
passes. Charts, however, don't have a natural measured size. So
the various series types create and destroy their children as necessary
in their updateDisplayList() function. At that point, you can be
sure your data is all up to date. Ely.

Hi Chris and Bill,
Don't have time to test your code, but the following code works with no hang-ups. You can also use the following borderSkin class to apply a gradient fill to the background of a panel. For some reason it doesn't work for an HBox or VBox. However, setting headerHeight to "0" produces the same effect. For dropShadow, I'm using the default CSS or applying a filter to the container in the MXML.

I found the problem. It's in my CSS file. If there's a borderStyle

[flexcoders] passing variables into Flex via the URL

Can anyone give me any pointers of how to accomplish this? Thanks ahead!

[flexcoders] Problems debugging

2006-09-14 Thread joshuajnoble
Hi, I'm having a little problem with running the debugger out of FB2.
When I invoke the debugger FB2 doesn't create a new debug swf, which
is a little annoying. The timestamp on the debug swf is from
yesterday, even though I've run the debug a few times today. I ran a
'clean' thinking that FB2 would generate a new debug swf for me but
that didn't pan out either so now I have no 'run' or 'debug' swf to
look at. How do I get FB to generate this for me without make a new
Flex project? I tried googling this but couldn't seem to find anything
useful. Anyone have any advice or resources?

Yeah... I'd like to be able to style rows based on three categories:

Try writing a custom Item Renderer? That way, you can set the style of
each row (or even each cell) based on the data.

RE: [flexcoders] have there any rightClick mouseEvent in Flex2?

2006-09-14 Thread Deepa Subramaniam
Yes - you can add a ContextMenu that pops open when you right click in a
Flex application. You can use the flash.ui.ContextMenu class to add
custom menu items to your ContextMenu and then use event handling to
invoke the desired behavior.

Attached is a simple example that shows how you can right click in a
DataGrid cell and add that item to another DataGrid. This should point
you in the right direction.

   Thanks for the response. I was afraid that was the case. I did
notice that the checks don't remain if you scroll. I'll have to come
up with a better way to do this. I wanted the user to be able to
check 30 items in a list of 100 and after checking the last item and
clicking on a submit button the database would be updated. I did not
want to have to call the CFC to update the database after each check.

 When working with data-driven controls, you will almost always work with
 the dataprovider and not with the rendered display elements. This is in
 part because the list based controls recycle the display elements when
 you scroll. So you can't loop through the rows of a dataGrid and read
 the value of the check box. In fact if you have implemented this
 already, you may have noticed that the check boxes do not always hold
 their values when you scroll.

 Instead, what you want to do is have your checkbox renderer undate a
 property on the dataProvider item when the user changes the checked
 state Then, when you are ready, you loop over the items in the
 dataProvider and read the value of the updated property.

 Anyone know of a good tutorial or other resource for using checkboxes
 in a datagrid that the user can then click on and then click on a
 button below the datagrid. The button click will call a function that
 should update the database for just the rows the user has clicked (ie
 update the record for that row).

 I've got the checkbox displaying on the datagrid, but I cannot figure
 out the code for the function to process the rows that the user
 checked. Is there some way to iterate over the datagrid and determine
 if the row's check box was selected?

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Process CheckBoxes Displayed Inside a DataGrid

2006-09-14 Thread Tracy Spratt

You do not need to call the server for each
check.

You just need to update the LOCAL
dataProvider item when the user clicks the check box. Then when you are
ready, loop through the dataProvider to extract the data to send to the server.

There are other ways. When a
checkbox is changed, update a local array or associative array with the data
necessary to do the server update, probably some item key and the selected
state.

But the easiest and most flexible is to
update the dataProvider from within the itemRenderer.

Tracy:

[flexcoders] Hierarchical Cairngorming!????

2006-09-14 Thread Aldo Bucchi
Hi all,

ok, now I know what to say...

I would love to have a straightforward way of adding mini
hierarchichal cairngorms to my components instead of exteriorizing
their internal MVC to the global cairngorm.

Something in the line of how Spring manages the hierarchy of contexts.

Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Aldo

Re: [flexcoders] Flex - Database

2006-09-14 Thread Nick Collins

In relation to Apollo, it has been mentioned it will be possible to write database drivers in AS3... might it not be possible then to do it for Flex as well? Just curious... it may well be a part of the Apollo API that allows that, but perhaps worth considering.
On 9/14/06, greg h [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Sudharshan,

I concur with Paul's intial post. Database driven Flex
applications are generally at least a 3-tier architecture. 1) UI

 Well, I'm in the same boat: I can't seem to get post data to send to
 my IIS server. I have been able to use the exact same .asp file on

 Here is my code:

 Flex code:

 /mx:Application

 ASP Code (pretty simple stuff..):
 %@ Language=VBScript %
 %
 Response.Write here it is: '  Request.Form  '
 Response.End
 %

 This should return the entire post. The only thing I get back in
 Flex is the string here it is: ''. As mentioned above, when I use
 the below javascript and Microsoft's 'XMLHttpRequest' object, I get
 a successfull post and receive the string here it
 is: 'myString=StringTest' back to the browser.

[flexcoders] Re: criticla problem charting component - coding axis

2006-09-14 Thread trader230
Hi Olivier -

This turns out to be a bug in Charts, which we've entered.

(Thanks for pointing it out!)

There is, fortunately, a workaround: to the code that you have,

   tAxis.baseAtZero=false

also add this line:

   tAxis.autoAdjust = taxis.autoAdjust;

That should force the redraw.

Hope this helps.

 I'm creating a component full actionscript. This component create a

 slAxis.alignLabelsToInterval=true;
 slAxis.autoAdjust=true;
 slAxis.baseAtZero=false;
 this.secondVerticalAxis=slAxis;

 this.secondVerticalAxisRenderer=new AxisRenderer();

 For informations, after this code, I retrieve the series (line).

 The baseAtZero doesn't work.

 I've tried an other sample custom chart and it wors properly BUT the

You can do it by nesting the Panel inside a Canvas with an image:

!--content here--
/mx:Panel
mx:Image right=10 width=22 height=22 y=4

The image will be placed on top of the panel wherever you specify..

I am working on styling my application, and I have searched throught the
live docs/help files for flex. But I cant seem to find how to set the
titleIcon to the right side of the window. Is there anyway to do this?

[flexcoders] Re: Panel Windows Title Icon

2006-09-14 Thread jgraham_us
You can also extend the Panel class that will give you access to the
protected titleBar component of Panel, you can then do something like
this.

titleBar.addChild( yourTitleIcon );

You might also have to override layoutChrome and position the icon
within the titleBar.
