[flexcoders] 360Flex DC is coming up soon! Don't miss it!

2010-08-17 Thread John Wilker
Hey Flexcoders list!

I just wanted to pop in and make sure everyone knew that 360|Flex was coming
up fast in Washington DC. September 19-22

The full session details have been posted as a PDF here.
http://360flex.com/downloads/sessions.pdf

and you can check out the schedule here:
http://360flex.com/downloads/schedule.pdf

This past spring in San Jose we had close to 400 attendees, we're hoping to
meet or better yet, BEAT that number in DC! It's gonna be a great time, with
content that will blow you mind. There's several on this list that can back
me up on that :)

At any rate, hope you all can make it, here's a special discount just for
Flexcoders members! flexcodersrocks saves you 10% off the $699
registration price.

By the way, $699 is for 4 days of content. 40+ sessions, from over 30
speakers, many from this list even! Check out the line up.

See you in DC!

[flexcoders] 360|Whisperings online Technical articles, looking for authors.

2009-04-23 Thread John Wilker
For those that don't know me, I'm John Wilker, co-founder of 360|Conferences
(360|Flex, and 360|iDev). Tom Ortega and I have created a new venture to go
along with our community oriented conferences. 360|Whisperings (
http://www.360whisperings.com). For those of you who own Amazon Kindles you
know that Whispernet is the delivery medium for purchased content.

We've created a site where people can come and browse the available content
and instead of subscribing for all you can eat, simply purchase the articles
that they want. Subscriptions are great, but you have to get your money's
worth. We're looking to go more the iTunes route, for a buck or two, get the
same quality article you would from a pay site or journal, knowing it's
quality content, and not have to pay for the content you don't want or need.

We're not just going to be limited to the Kindle (and the iPhone/iTouch
technically) but that's a good turn key place to start. Our goal is to offer
content in as many formats as we can (PDF, ePub, Mobi, PRC, etc) so that
everyone can get access. We'll take care of editing and marketing the
content and reporting on sales. The split is 60/40 us, in exchange for the
stuff I just mentioned. Our conference sites will link to and highlight
content as well as the primary site itself. I know it seems like small
change, and it is to start, but the more articles we get, the more momentum
this offering builds.

We've got a few folks signed on right now, coming up with article ideas.
We're hoping to get a few more folks for the official launch so that we've
got a good library set up and ready for folks. Why subscribe to sites and
journals, and have no idea how much value you'll get from the content? Just
pay for what you want. We're looking for technical content on any topic; CF,
FLex, Flash, AIR, Java, etc.

[flexcoders] dynamically sorting an adv datagrid

2008-08-26 Thread John Wilker
I've got a scenario, where I need to trigger a sort from another component.

My current approach is first capture the selected colum when the user
selects a cell.

then from my other component, I fire an event.

my adg component catches and acts on the event.

My problem is capturing the column the user selected. I may have other
issues, but that's the first one.

Is there a better approach? any thoughts on my current one?

Not sure which code would help so I'll post if asked.

[flexcoders] 360|Flex Europe, about a month away

2008-03-03 Thread John Wilker
Hey Euro-Flexers,

sorry for the list spam, but we wanted to make sure the European community
knew that 360|Flex was coming to Europe, 7-9 April, in Milan Italy.

If you attended any of our US based events, you know how rockin' the
conference is. We're planning to do the same thing in Europe in just over a
month!!

Ask around, check out the blogs, ask Tom or I directly, we're here.

Ok list spam over, go back to coding :)

Re: [flexcoders] 360Flex vs. Adobe MAX - which would you attend?

2007-04-09 Thread John Wilker

Obviously I'm biased so take my two cents for what they're worth.

MAX is a fun conference. That said, 360|Flex will be three days of Flex,
Flex, and Flex. No acrobat, no dreamweaver, fireworks, no CF, flash IDE,
just Flex.

We cover Flex with backends (so there's at least one talk with CF in it LOL
)
Components, Apollo, etc.

As was said, the Flex team tends to be there, people looking for Flex devs
are there, I know several people that met clients there. I met several, as
well as potential employers. It's a Flex Fest for sure.

Drive to MAX? then you miss out on all the partying and drinkin'! :)

Hopefully that helped even a little in the decision.

[flexcoders] internal build error only when pointing to local CF server?

but only when I point my build folder to

if I point to bin, no problems. I've got plenty of other projects that point
to other folders in that server without problem. Is there something I need

Re: [flexcoders] Re: using videoDisplay with netstream (FMS)

2007-03-19 Thread John Wilker

Stephen,

SOrta, I've seen that. However I'm dealing with getting the feed
dynamically. I call an HTTP address which returns an XML file with
streamname and url.

But it seems to me that if the rtmp doesn't look like
rtmp://localhost/videodisplay/bike.flv

I get no love.

For something that straightforward should I need to involve netconnection
and netstream? or do I just take my streamName and url and plug them into
VideoDisplay?

I ask, though the time I had it working that was what I had done. Now I get
errors.

Thx

didn't work. What is the best practice for components to call the main
application to perform tasks like changing the state?

Thanks

[flexcoders] dropping item into a tree node?

2007-02-21 Thread John Wilker

I've searched a bit and it sure seems like this should be easier :) but I've
got a datagrid with some data and am trying to drop an entry in that onto a
node of a tree. But the tree is refusing the drop. The dragenter() function
fires, but that's all I've accomplished.

Here's the tree code.

mx:Tree id=groupTree showRoot=false dataProvider={allGroups}
width=155
   labelField=GROUPNAME click=fire() borderThickness=0
   dropEnabled=true dragEnabled=false dragEnter=test()
enabled=true doubleClickEnabled=true /

Any thoughts?

[flexcoders] relative img path in rss feeds

Hey all,

I'm working on something to pull Rss feeds, sample app really.

When I retreieve a feed that has images in the posts, if the image is simply
linked from elsewhere the URL is for the image is absolute and works just
fine. When the image is hosted with the blog (blogcfc in my case) the img
path is relative /blah/blah.image and the loader freaks out. Error #2044:

  Yes, I've seen this before. Although I don't know if it's a bug, I do

If you call ObjectUtil.toString() on a UIComponent, you will get this,
because many of the members of UIComponent.systemManager.loaderInfo
throw this exception. In your case, I bet the 'target' property of
the event is a UIComponent.

The workaround is to exclude the 'loaderInfo' property from the dump,
like this:

ObjectUtil.toString(event, null, ['loaderInfo'])

I agree the error message seems suspicious, since the app has
completely finished loading.

 This is a bit weird. (Every other time I have said this it's been me
 but...)

 I have a custom event that I am broadcasting on a button click.

 The Button is clicked, which then calls a function.

 When I put a trace of the event.target I get the The loading object
 is not sufficiently loaded to provide this information. error.

 I am not sure why this is happening as the target is fully loaded
 before I click it.

 Any one else seen this?

 The below snippet causes this error for me. Do you see this error when
 you run the below code?:

The problem is due to ServiceLocator no longer
extending UIComponent. As such, loadWSDL() is not called automatically.

To call a Web Service operation you will need to call
loadWSDL() yourself, for example:

webService.loadWSDL();

var call : AsyncToken = webService.GetQuote.send(
stockSymbol );

call.addResponder( responder );

In the next release of Cairngorm we will do this
automatically for you in the ServiceLocator.

[flexcoders] using E4X to filter data in a datagrid

2006-07-28 Thread John Wilker

I'm working on a project that has a datagrid, who gets data from an XML object.I'm trying to figure out how to use E4X to filter the XML data I got and update the datagrid so I have less roundtrips to the server. I've found several examples in language reference, but those make use of either directly binding to an E4X statement, or using MX binding to do the same.
I'd like to have a function, that will filter my large XML dataset, using E4X (ie, get just the nodes that are of type XYZ) and use that to populate the datagrid.Hopefully that makes sense?

Re: [flexcoders] Re: using E4X to filter data in a datagrid

2006-07-28 Thread John Wilker

ben, that worked thanks!Now to further complicate matters :)my end goal is that I have 5 combo boxes with filters. Each can be fired off in any order. I'd like to figure out how have one function see the newly filtered data and filter that data further, based on user input. I haven't been able to get my varialbes to match up between XMLList and XML to get it to work.
Here's the flow I'm envisioning. Set my root XML data to a temp var on init. Each function looks at that var, applies the E4X filtering, then saves the new XML to the temp var so that subsequent filters can see that data and filter on it.
Thx!On 7/28/06, John Wilker [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I don't have the IDE in front of me but I would think something like
this should work:

function changeDP(attrName):void
{
var list:XMLList = baseXml..myNodes.([EMAIL PROTECTED]);
myDG.dataProvider = list;
}

Is that what you mean?

 I'm trying to figure out how to use E4X to filter the XML data I got and
 update the datagrid so I have less roundtrips to the server. I've found
 several examples in language reference, but those make use of either
 directly binding to an E4X statement, or using MX binding to do the
same.

 I'd like to have a function, that will filter my large XML dataset,
using
 E4X (ie, get just the nodes that are of type XYZ) and use that to
populate
 the datagrid.

 Hopefully that makes sense?

[flexcoders] newb: How can you get object not in a bubble path to see events that get fired?

2006-05-09 Thread John Wilker

Below are the various components of my app.my main mxml file has this function called on creation completepublic function init():void   {john2.text = nothing yet.;
addEventListener(loggedIn,changeCanvas);   }public function changeCanvas(event:Event):void   {john2.text = bubbled;//mainCanvas.visible = true;
//loginRegisterCanvas.visible = false; }I have a loginObj.as class that is imported. The class handles my webservice login stuff. The login resulthandler is below.public function wsSigninResult(result:Event):void
  { var loginEvent:Event = new Event(loggedIn,true); ... (var assignments) dispatchEvent(loginEvent); }I tested the dispatch with a listenner in the same file, that worked just fine. I just can't get the class file to bubble the even to the application.

[flexcoders] F2: Trouble with calling a class's methods

2006-05-04 Thread John Wilker

Just getting my feet wet in Flex. I've got a main mxml file with three components. also a class file with some properties and functions.my main mxml has[bindable]   public var userLogin:login = new login();
 mx:ViewStack id=viewstack1 width=695 height=443 x=0 y=68   Registration id=RegisterComponent label=Register myLogin={userLogin} /
   Login id=LoginComponent label=Login myLogin={userLogin} /   Forgot id=ForgotComponent label=Forgot your password? myLogin={userLogin} /
  /mx:ViewStackthe login component hasmx:Button id=btnLoginSubmit2 label=Login2 click=myLogin.doEcho() /For now that is. just to see if I can call methods.
mx:Text id=statusText text={myLogin.loginStatus} width=200/lastly login.aspublic function doEcho():String  {   loginStatus = processing doEcho;
   //test = userWS.echo(); //loginStatus = test.result; }Login.as has a constructor which get's fired because I have it change the value of a text item. but nothing seems to work past that.
ANy thoughts would be greatly appreciated!J-- John WilkerVice President Software Development/WriterRed Omega Solutions, Inc.www.johnwilker.com

Re: [flexcoders] F2: Trouble with calling a class's methods

2006-05-04 Thread John Wilker

I made it less confusing. login.as is loginObj.asie: public var userLogin:loginObj = new loginObj();Login big L is the component.No change in behaviour however.

I'm confused. What's 'login' and what's 'Login' (capital 'L')?

It is not recommended to have two things with the same name. Try
changing the names and see it if works.
