FOP does not hang.

Java has a problem exiting when an AWT component is used, which is what
happens when there is an embedded svg doc.

Hi Kumar,

Try enclosed fo file..

Problem was with nesting in tables and please specify table-column as these are
presently required by FOP.

RE: Printing PDF using FOP...

2001-06-19 Thread Denis Kranjcec

I'm printing with acrobat reader 4.0

here is print.bat that I call from my application
acrobat /t C:\Java\xml-fop\pdf\file.pdf "\\K2\HP LaserJet 1100 (MS)" "HP
LaserJet 1100 (MS)" "\\K2\HP LaserJet 1100 (MS)"

This is documentation from adobe:

How Do I Use Command Lines with Acrobat and Acrobat Reader on
Windows?
These are unsupported command lines, but have worked for some developers.
There
is no documentation for these commands other than what is listed below. You
can
display and print a PDF file using command lines with Acrobat and Acrobat
Reader.
AcroRd32.exe filename - Executes the Reader and displays a file.
Other options for the command line are:
AcroRd32.exe /p filename - Executes the Reader and prints a file.
AcroRd32.exe /t path printername drivername portname - Initiates
Acrobat Reader, prints a file while suppressing the Acrobat print dialog
box, then
terminates Reader.
The four parameters of the /t option evaluate to path, printername,
drivername, and portname (all strings).
printername - The name of your printer.
drivername -Your printer driver's name. Whatever appears in the Driver Used
box
when you view your printer's properties.
portname - The printer's port. portname cannot contain any "/" characters;
if it
does, output is routed to the default port for that printer.
If using Acrobat, substitute Acrobat.exe in place of AcroRd32.exe in the
command lines.
option meaning
/n Launch a separate instance of the Acrobat application, even if one is
currently open.
/s Open Acrobat, suppressing the splash screen.
/o Open Acrobat, suppressing the open file dialog.
/h Open Acrobat in hidden mode.

I hope this helps,

Denis

I tried you svg as pdf, png and the batik browser and all of them looked
very similar.
So I don't know what you mean by "ugly colors".

Maybe there is something specific to your environment.

RE: Problem with Redirect patch for fop codegen

2001-06-19 Thread Kelly Campbell

This issue seems familiar. I seem to remember working around something
similar with redirects when we went from Xalan1 to Xalan2 in the FOP build.
Make Xalan2 do "the right thing", and we'll fix our build if there's an
issue because it was relying on a bug in something else we import.

I'm glad Gump is helping us identify problems like this before releases get
sent out. I haven't been reading release notes on Xalan2, but this change
sounds like something that should be highlighted since it can actually break
people using the redirect extension like the FOP build.

RE: Gump xalan2 failures

2001-06-19 Thread Scott_Boag

Kelly, with the check-ins I just did, the fop build should run OK. It
would help a lot if you could update your Xalan build and give it a whirl.
You should make sure that everything else seems OK, besides the fact that
it seems to build without error.

Thank you for the investigation. I've fixed the particular problem with
the key() function (haven't checked it in yet), and it runs through the
codegen without reporting an error, but there is obviously something else
wrong... build/src/org/apache/fop/fo/properties/Constants.java, for
instance, doesn't define any constants, so there are a million compilation
errors. I've had enough fun for one night tracking the other problem down,
so I'll attack this one in the morning.

I can reproduce the same error that Gump was reporting. I've been trying to
debug it by running Xalan by hand on the properties.xsl and
foproperties.xml
that are failing and tracing that. I'm getting some inconsistent results
however. Every failure is from a recursive call to the "propclass" template
as seen in Gump, but I can get it to fail at different points in the XML
source it's processing.

I've changed the template to this:

  Property

   No datatype found for property:

PropClass:
 PropName:

Running Xalan with -TT, this fails on the property[@name='padding-before']
element in the source. However if I comment out the PropName message at the
end and uncomment the first one at the beginning of my modified template,
then it fails in a recursive propclass call on the
property[@name='conditional-length-template'].

My suspicion is that the nodes returned by the key function used in the
recursive call are somehow corrupted. I'm have no clue why it would error
out in different places depending on if I write a message out before or
after this template does its work. I don't have time to dig into this any
more today however. Hopefully someone on the Xalan team will be able to
look
into this.

For the moment I need to comment this out in order to get the fop codegen
to work. We can enable it again as soon soon as we can get the fop folks
to modify their stylesheets. There's always the chance that I'll screw
someone else up in the gump chain my doing this, so I'm not sure what the
best answer is.

[19-cvs][Bug with locating images]

2001-06-19 Thread Anthony Tagunov

Hello fop developers!

By mistake i got 0.19-cvs and here's what i've found out:

1) in anttasks.Fop there's a case mistake (instead of "baseDir" there's
"basedir")

2) present version of anttasks.Fop puts object of type File into the
"baseDir" property and later on FopImageFactory extracts
getStringProperty() getting null and thus arising a NullPointer
exception somewhere in java.URL code when images are used (i used
the latest (cvs) documentation for JBoss a test example with images)

2) if the proposed fix to Fop.java is done (see attachments),
still we get urls of the form

e:\path-to-doc\url(images/some.gif)

such URL rises anther exception when the code tries to open it
(something like
(The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect)
), i do not have an exact listing now

I tried to fix it in my own way (i do not know the depths of fop, so
no idea where this "url()" -- came from, i just cut it out (see the
other attachment), and i finally worked for me (the process of
creating .pdf moved further, judging by debug print outs, the
exception disappeared), but:

i still have the following trouble:
JBoss uses docbook for creating .fo file.
After this docbook i get something like

(this is a real example), and if we do

new URL( new URL("file:E:\some1\"), "file:images/j.jpg" )

we'll get a request to "images\j.jpg" file, not to

This is not correct. After the latest security update shows IE5 the pdf
fine. I recommend to update the IE till the latest version.

You need to end the URL with extension ".pdf". You should ask Microsoft why?

RE: How can I create Widgets with FOP?

2001-06-19 Thread Kelly Campbell

Hi Andre,

XSL:FO doesn't specify any form widgets such as you want. This is something
which currently is only implemented in HTML browsers. There is a working
draft spec for XForms which provides form widgets in the context of XHTML,
but I think it would allow for mixing form widgets into a XSLFO document in
the future. No processors currently support anything like that though. Also,
it won't be possible to implement such a feature for any output other than
PDF and the Swing/AWT previewer. XSLFO is really meant to format content.
Its user interaction constructs are very very limited (basic-link,
multi-switch, etc).

Hi there,

I check your documentation and faq of FOP but there is nothing said about
creating
Widget (textfields, comboboxes, buttons ...) with FOP. Is it possible with
the current
version (v0.19) to create widget? Do you plan to implement this feature?

Thanks a lot and have a nice day.

Whatever status the code is in, if you are reasonably happy with the design
behind it, please feel free to submit it. The last thing we try (or want) to do
is to foster an impression that people have to provide "code-complete" modules;
as long as it compiles and doesn't break other code, we are happy to have it.

The whole point of open-source is that we try to get code in early and often.
That way other people can look at it, and take it into account, and maybe work
with it, too. It also insures against the possibility that you, or anyone, just
never has the time to really finish the job, and every time you look at what you
have you want to improve it, and it never actually sees the light of day.

I am as guilty as anyone, of holding off on submitting things into CVS until I
have finished works of art. And I really get bit with the "improvement bug" I
described above. :-) But this is just not the way to do things in open-source,
as a rule.

So, in summary, please feel free to submit what you have. What you can do in any
case is make it clear that you wish to remain the prime on that piece of code,
and that if anyone else wishes to work on it they should coordinate with you.

Table Layout Bug

2001-06-19 Thread Eric Dalquist

I was wondering if any progress has been made on
this bug:
http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1318

I'm having the same problem and found a temporary
work-around by putting a .5pt white border around the long cells but I really
don't want to have to do that as it makes for poor an more confusing design. I
hope this problem can be resolved quickly as we are in the process of proving
the usefulness of FOP here to eventually use it in a production
system.

I'm using FOP 0.18.1

Are you using MSIE? Apparently, you need to set the content length in the

The fop.bat file is specifying the cp relative to its own location (fop root
directory). Try to edit the fop.bat cp to fullpath if you want to use it outside the
fop root directory.

Re: Problems with OS390

2001-06-19 Thread Martin Roob

Hello,
possibly your problem is the encoding of the
fo-File. If you transfer it form NT to OS390 in binary mode,
everything should be ok, but than you cannot read
the file on OS390, because it is ASCII (better UTF-8) and OS390 wants to see
EBCDIC.
If you transfer it as a text file, your ftp program
or whatever you use should convert it to EBCDIC and you can look at it in a text
editor. But than you have to manually change the encoding attribute of the file,
because otherwise the XML parser assumes it is utf-8.
So try to change the fist line of the file
to

(ebcdic-cp-us is an encoding that is supported by Xerces).

Running FOP - feedback from a beginner

2001-06-19 Thread Michail Bikoulis

Hello,

I have some comments regarding the "Running FOP" website at
http://xml.apache.org/fop/running.html:

Point "a" states that Java 1.1.x or later mey be used. I tried with JDK
1.1.8, but the script Fop.bat failed. Apparently this java version does not
understand the parameter -cp; -classpath has to be used.

Something that was unclear from this webpage was that one has to run the
Fop.bat script from the FOP root directory. This I think is because of the
contents of the -cp parameter. I tried adding the FOP root direcytory to the
PATH env. variable, but it didn't help.

These are of course minor things. The product is great, and I look forward
to using it in my project.

Kind regards,

Mike
