RE: PDFFrameMakerPDF Color Issue

2008-03-06 Thread Jacob Schäffer
Framers,

I have now studied the material forwarded by Richard, and the PDF he imports
into his FrameMaker document is a perfectly well behaved PDF with correctly
defined spot colors and duotone images.

On Page 14 in Adobe® FrameMaker® 7.2 User Guide Supplement for Windows® and
UNIX® it's stated:

snip

Importing PDF and Illustrator files (UNIX)
--

You can import Adobe PDF files and Illustrator 9 and 10 files into a FrameMaker
document in release 7.1 or later.

When you import a PDF or Illustrator file into FrameMaker, the file is treated
as a graphic, and only one page can be imported at a time. You can import it
either by copy or by reference.

***Both process and spot colors can be displayed and printed***.

/snip

This statement seem to be faulty. At least, on Windows spot colors contained in
imported PDF documents appear NOT to be retained when output from FrameMaker on
Windows, and will -- as far as I can see -- effectively output as defined in
their alternate color space, usually CMYK.

Hence, importing spot colored PDF documents is to no avail with FrameMaker on
Windows. I haven't tested on other platforms.

Grafikhuset Publi PDF can normally deal with this issue via custom color maps
and repair such spot colors. However, it can NOT repair duotone images, since
these are output as composite CMYK, which mean they cannot be repaired at all.

To create a custom color map in Grafikhuset Publi PDF you simply right-click
the Publi PDF icon in the system tray, select the Attended Queue you want to
use, and then turn on automatic creation of color maps in the Optimizer section
of the pop-up menu. This will prompt you with an interface that allow you to
create new spot colors -- next time you print to the queue.

When the dialog show up do as follows:

(1) Type the spot color name and enter the CMYK values (0-100) in the toolbar.

(2) Click the small button right of the K component field. This this will add
the spot color to the drop-down list that appear when you click any field in
the convert to column of the table.

(3) When a spot color is selected the Tint value can be entered in the
corresponding field in the %T column. Be careful NOT to check the OT field,
since this will apply Overprint, which you most often do NOT want.

Clicking the Convert to field for each listed Gray, RGB, CMYK or other spot
color allow you to remap colors exactly as your job require. When finished you
can save the color map for later use. You may actually attach it to the queue,
so you don't need to enter new information each time you print (If you attach
it to the queue you should switch off the automatic color map creation, since
its OFF state assure that the analysis phase is skipped and conversion is run
directly without prompting).

Hope this helps.

I did not even know of the personal maker.ini, but it is there sure
enough. HOWEVER, I would not recommend putting these things in there,
the reason being:
1. ~\Documents and Settings\ ~~~ da da da \maker.ini showed with
today's stamp, implying that it is regenerated each time you boot.
2. The personal maker.ini file only shows portions of the main file
and seems to handle locations of folders and such.
3. Everyone has recommended doing the changes on the main maker.ini.

QUESTION: Did you remember to restart (close and start again)
FrameMaker after doing the changes? The maker.ini changes will not
affect the already running FM, as this is only a file it reads at
startup.

In responding about the personal copy of maker.ini Bodvar wrote (in part):

 1. ~\Documents and Settings\ ~~~ da da da \maker.ini showed with
today's stamp, implying that it is regenerated each time you boot.

Not true. What happens is that the current session's preference items
get saved each time you exit FrameMaker so that they will be used as
the defaults the next time you start FrameMaker.

 2. The personal maker.ini file only shows portions of the main file
and seems to handle locations of folders and such.

The personal maker.ini can specify a personal override value for *any*
parameter that is controlled by the ini file. By default, it included things
like default directories, user dictionaires, user preference items like
automatic save, and default locations of dialog boxes--all the kinds
of things that any user is likely to set for their own personal preference.

The whole point is to allow different users of a shared computer to
set up their defaults the way they like them without interfering with
other users. When you start FramemMaker, the main maker.ini is read
first, then the current user's maker.ini. This means that all settings in
the main maker.ini are used except for the specific items that are
included in the personal maker.ini.

Yes, it's an annoying bug that's been discussed here many times. If the
text inset is imported into an empty pgf so that it sits adjacent to
the pilcrow (end of pgf marker), this container pgf takes on the
format of the first pgf in the text inset.

Fixing this is simple: Separate the text inset from the pilcrow of its
container pgf. I use a non-breaking space so that there's a clearly
visible text symbol and I don't accidentally delete it. (You do have
View Text Symbols turned on, right? Editing FM docs without being able
to see the text symbols is negligence, IMHO.)

Re: Trouble splitting a chapter into two files using FrameMaker....

2008-03-06 Thread Peter Gold
You will *always* get a page break where a document spans two files.

The real reason behind this behavior is that nearly all modern
printers are page oriented, that is, they start printing new files
on new pages. Old dot-matrix printers were line printers that
printed new files on the next line after the end of the previous file,
on continuous paper, unless a printer command was included to begin
the new file at the top of the next page.

 The
only way around that would be to combine the two source files into a single
book component using a text inset for the second part (or inserting both
parts btext inset into an otherwise empty container file).

Trouble splitting a chapter into two files using FrameMaker....

Hi guys,

I have a chapter that is so large that it is causing FrameMaker to crash

But I'm having problems with pagination and empty pages being inserted at
the point where the chapter jumps from one file to the next. Anyone have
expertise to share about this problem?

Thanks a ton!

Re: Trouble splitting a chapter into two files using FrameMaker....

2008-03-06 Thread Alan Litchfield
Susan,

I'm assuming that from the book file you have right clicked on each
of the chapter files:
1. In the first chapter file you have set the pagination to delete
empty pages; and,
2. in the second file you have set the first page to next available.

Cheers
Alan

If you're getting a blank page at the file break, you need to check
 the
pagination properties of both files. The file for the first part
 needs to be
set to Delete empty pages, and the file for the second part needs to
be set to Next Available. Note that this last setting *must* be made
from the book file. If you go to the pagination properties in the
 file itself,
you will not find Next available as an option because it does not
 make
any sense for an individual document; it only makes sense in the
 context
 of a multi-file book.

the second one. Nothing shows up. Of course, when I move the TEXT
option to the head of the list in the Program Files file, it doesn't
change how the paste function works. Any hints where my other

PDF>FrameMaker>PDF Color Issue

2008-03-06 Thread Jacob Schäffer
Framers,

I have now studied the material forwarded by Richard, and the PDF he imports
into his FrameMaker document is a perfectly well behaved PDF with correctly
defined spot colors and duotone images.

On Page 14 in "Adobe? FrameMaker? 7.2 User Guide Supplement for Windows? and
UNIX?" it's stated:

Importing PDF and Illustrator files (UNIX)
--

You can import Adobe PDF files and Illustrator 9 and 10 files into a FrameMaker
document in release 7.1 or later.

When you import a PDF or Illustrator file into FrameMaker, the file is treated
as a graphic, and only one page can be imported at a time. You can import it
either by copy or by reference.

***Both process and spot colors can be displayed and printed***.

This this will add
the spot color to the drop-down list that appear when you click any field in
the "convert to" column of the table.

(3) When a spot color is selected the Tint value can be entered in the
corresponding field in the %T column. Be careful NOT to check the OT field,
since this will apply Overprint, which you most often do NOT want.

Clicking the "Convert to" field for each listed Gray, RGB, CMYK or other spot
color allow you to remap colors exactly as your job require.

Is there a way to paste text as default?

2008-03-06 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I did not even know of the "personal" maker.ini, but it is there sure
enough. HOWEVER, I would not recommend putting these things in there,
the reason being:
1. ~\Documents and Settings\ ~~~ da da da \maker.ini showed with
today's stamp, implying that it is regenerated each time you boot.
2. The "personal" maker.ini file only shows portions of the main file
and seems to handle locations of folders and such.
3. Everyone has recommended doing the changes on the main maker.ini.

QUESTION: Did you remember to restart (close and start again)
FrameMaker after doing the changes? The maker.ini changes will not
affect the already running FM, as this is only a file it reads at
startup.

Is there a way to paste text as default?

2008-03-06 Thread Fred Ridder

In responding about the personal copy of maker.ini Bodvar wrote (in part):

Not true. What happens is that the current session's preference items
get saved each time you exit FrameMaker so that they will be used as
the defaults the next time you start FrameMaker.

> 2. The "personal" maker.ini file only shows portions of the main file
> and seems to handle locations of folders and such.

Text insert causing rogue H1

Yes, it's an annoying bug that's been discussed here many times. If the
text inset is imported into an empty pgf so that it "sits" adjacent to
the pilcrow (end of pgf marker), this "container" pgf takes on the
format of the first pgf in the text inset.

Fixing this is simple: Separate the text inset from the pilcrow of its
container pgf. I use a non-breaking space so that there's a clearly
visible text symbol and I don't accidentally delete it. (You do have
View > Text Symbols turned on, right? Editing FM docs without being able
to see the text symbols is negligence, IMHO.)

Hi Rene ?

Mea culpa (or in the modern rendering, ?my
bad?).
I wrongly expected that changing ClipboardFormatsPrioritiesto have TEXT as
the first option would change the ordering in the Paste Special dialog by
pushing Text to the top of the list. But what we are talking about here isNOT
Paste Special, but simple Paste.
Talk about thinking inside the box.
Now my simple Paste does indeed paste as text.
 Problem solved.
 Thanks for the help.

I'm curious why you think that. Since ClipboardFormatsPriorities
specifies how _Paste_ behaves, how would it be advantageous to have
Paste Special default to the same behavior?

Inquiring minds, etc.

Trouble splitting a chapter into two files using FrameMaker....

You will *always* get a page break where a document spans two files. The
only way around that would be to combine the two source files into a single
book component using a text inset for the second part (or inserting both
parts btext inset into an otherwise empty container file).

If you're getting a blank page at the file break, you need to check the
pagination properties of both files. The file for the first part needs to be
set to "Delete empty pages", and the file for the second part needs to
be set to "Next Available". Note that this last setting *must* be made
from the book file. If you go to the pagination properties in the file itself,
you will not find "Next available" as an option because it does not make
any sense for an individual document; it only makes sense in the context
of a multi-file book.

Trouble splitting a chapter into two files using FrameMaker....

2008-03-06 Thread Peter Gold
> You will *always* get a page break where a document spans two files.

The real reason behind this behavior is that nearly all modern
printers are "page oriented," that is, they start printing new files
on new pages. Old dot-matrix printers were "line printers" that
printed new files on the next line after the end of the previous file,
on continuous paper, unless a printer command was included to begin
the new file at the top of the next page.

Trouble splitting a chapter into two files using FrameMaker....

2008-03-06 Thread Susan Herrin
Hi guys,

I have a chapter that is so large that it is causing FrameMaker to crash
whenever I do an update.

I've spit the chapter into two files, and so at least frame isn't crashing
at the moment

But I'm having problems with pagination and empty pages being inserted at
the point where the chapter jumps from one file to the next. Anyone have
expertise to share about this problem?

Thanks a ton!
