Framemaker 8, Windows 8.1 and click-and-drag

2013-09-16 Thread Lea Rush
Hi all,

I crossed my fingers that FM8 and Win8 would play together reasonably nicely.
It's almost fine except for the above-referenced action: click-and-drag to
highlight. It doesn't always happen, but when it does, FM freezes irreparably.
I have to force it closed, and the autosave may or may not survive. Argh. I use
click-and-drag much more often than I realized, and it's pretty much a
dealbreaker.

I'm posting less asking for help and more as a warning for my fellow FM8
holdouts. I suspect that I'm going to end up using Remote Desktop to run my
Win7 machine on which FM8 worked fine. Do not go unto Win8.1 with old
Framemaker; there be monsters.

Adobe PS driver vanished after Adobe failed Acrobat update

2013-09-16 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Thanks for the suggestions. They helped me take the right decision. :-)

I did not have Reader installed earlier, but after having sent the computer
to a shop (due to USB problems and other anomalities) some changes seem to
have been made that triggered automatic update of Reader. Perhaps they
installed it? And failing to install the update seems to have killed the
printer.

I deleted Reader and ran the Acrobat X repair, and voil?! My Adobe PDF
printer is here again!

Re: Framemaker 8, Windows 8.1 and click-and-drag

2013-09-16 Thread Dave Reynolds

Hi Lea and Rick

Does it depend on how quickly
you drag the cursor across the text? I'm
using Frame 8 on Win 7 and I've had a few crashes when
  resizing an anchored frame
down the page. I can't prove it, but I
feel it might be to do with how quickly I drag the frame handle.
  So, if I now have
to make an anchored frame a lot bigger, and drag
the handle a long way down the page, I do it slowly. Seems to have worked so far.

  Cheers

Dave

Adobe PS driver vanished after Adobe failed Acrobat update

2013-09-16 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
A few days ago i accepted (once again!) Adobe's request for update on Adobe
Acrobat (or Reader) ? security reasons, they said. And, as usual, while
downloading the message was that I could keep on with my work.

However, the installer gave up when trying to install the update and told
me it didn't have the rights, system being Windows 7.

I thought nothing more of it until now when I tried to print a FM10 file to
file, there was no option for it. I tried the Distiller on a ps file and it
worked fine. I tried to save as pdf in FM10 and it started but quit with
complaints that there was no Adobe ps driver available.

On the Adobe website i only find older versions of ps drivers and all the
answers I can see are about having to set it up as a new printer in
Windows, but I do not know where to look for it. I don't find any such
thing in System32\drivers.

And they warn that the ps drivers on Adobe's website do not work with Vista
or newer.

Any comments?

Re: Inserting inline graphics

2013-09-16 Thread Robert Lauriston
Extracting the icons from the plug-in source should not be difficult,
they're usually all in one directory.

Assuming the icons are all the same size, in a separate .fm file
create one frame with one scratch icon bitmap with all the settings as
you want them. Copy and paste that into your main document, copy your
new icon bitmap, select the scratch icon bitmap, and paste.

I think that's the fastest workflow you'll get unless maybe you wrote
a FrameScript macro.

To me it seems like a huge waste of time. I'd just document the tooltip text.

Download the Acrobat update, right-click the file, and select Run As
Administrator.

If FrameMaker still won't save to PDF, reinstall FrameMaker.

If it still won't save as PDF, re-run the Acrobat update as admin.

Re: Inserting inline graphics

2013-09-16 Thread Robert Lauriston
Huh, pasting over a selected bitmap used to stay in place. Another bad
change to the UI. The align commands might be faster and more precise
than dragging.

As a user I don't find it much work to find a button by its tooltip.
Usually the icon image gives some clue.

Normally I document the most efficient way to execute a command, which
is rarely via the toolbar button.

RE: Inserting inline graphics

2013-09-16 Thread Alastair Dent
I'm using something like your suggested workflow.

The downside of it is that pasting into the pre-formatted frame doesn't work
well. Even if the scratch icon bitmap is selected, pasting doesn't replace it.
Selecting the frame and pasting results in the bitmap appearing in the centre
of the page. It has to be manually dragged from there to the frame.

Just documenting the tooltip text is a huge failure in usability for the end
user.

Subject: Adobe PS driver vanished after Adobe failed Acrobat update

A few days ago i accepted (once again!) Adobe's request for update on Adobe
Acrobat (or Reader) ? security reasons, they said. And, as usual, while
downloading the message was that I could keep on with my work.

However, the installer gave up when trying to install the update and told me
it didn't have the rights, system being Windows 7.

I thought nothing more of it until now when I tried to print a FM10 file to
file, there was no option for it. I tried the Distiller on a ps file and it
worked fine. I tried to save as pdf in FM10 and it started but quit with
complaints that there was no Adobe ps driver available.

On the Adobe website i only find older versions of ps drivers and all the
answers I can see are about having to set it up as a new printer in Windows,
but I do not know where to look for it. I don't find any such thing in
System32\drivers.

And they warn that the ps drivers on Adobe's website do not work with Vista
or newer.

Any comments?

Adobe PS driver vanished after Adobe failed Acrobat update

2013-09-16 Thread Robert Lauriston
The experts say it's a bad idea to have Acrobat Reader and Acrobat on
the same system.

And failing to install the update seems to have killed the
printer.

I deleted Reader and ran the Acrobat X repair, and voilá! My Adobe PDF
printer is here again!

Adobe PS driver vanished after Adobe failed Acrobat update

2013-09-16 Thread Robert Lauriston
Download the Acrobat update, right-click the file, and select Run As
Administrator.

If FrameMaker still won't save to PDF, reinstall FrameMaker.

If it still won't save as PDF, re-run the Acrobat update as admin.

Inserting inline graphics

2013-09-16 Thread Robert Lauriston
Huh, pasting over a selected bitmap used to stay in place. Another bad
change to the UI. The align commands might be faster and more precise
than dragging.

As a user I don't find it much work to find a button by its tooltip.
Usually the icon image gives some clue.

Normally I document the most efficient way to execute a command, which
is rarely via the toolbar button.

Inserting inline graphics

2013-09-16 Thread Alastair Dent
I'm using something like your suggested workflow.

The downside of it is that pasting into the pre-formatted frame doesn't work
well. Even if the scratch icon bitmap is selected, pasting doesn't replace it.
Selecting the frame and pasting results in the bitmap appearing in the centre
of the page. It has to be manually dragged from there to the frame.

Just documenting the tooltip text is a huge failure in usability for the end
user.

Extracting the icons from the plug-in source should not be difficult, they're
usually all in one directory.

Assuming the icons are all the same size, in a separate .fm file create one
frame with one scratch icon bitmap with all the settings as you want them. Copy
and paste that into your main document, copy your new icon bitmap, select the
scratch icon bitmap, and paste.

I think that's the fastest workflow you'll get unless maybe you wrote a
FrameScript macro.

To me it seems like a huge waste of time. I'd just document the tooltip text.
