Is the problem that you do not want to see the dotted lines at all?
Select View in the menubar.
On the submenu, you probably have Borders checked. Select Borders to
remove the checkmark. The dotted lines vanish.

The text frame for the body text for your Body page is located on the
Master Page if you need need to follow the instructions from Rebecca
Officer about editing.
You will also get dotted lines from anchored frames, for example, but
they are on your Body page if they are created there. Checking or
unchecking Borders makes them visible or invisible no matter where
they are.

If you are asking whether you can change the look of the dotted lines
(to a solid line for example), I don't believe you can. Others may
have a comment about this.

Hope this helps a bit more.

BTW If you can get a copy of Adobe's Classroom in a Book for 5.5, that
should be quite useful. It is an excellent starting point for new
FrameMaker users - at least, that was my personal experience.

Re: Expressing Fractions with Offset Numbers and Division Symbols

2006-07-11 Thread Rick Quatro
First of all, you should use the fraction slash by typing Control+q Shift+z.
Then you can apply character formats to the numerator and denominator. The
numerator format will use the Superscript position and the denominator
format will use the Subscript position. You set the specifications for
superscript and subscript globally in a document by using Format Document
 Text Options.

The problem comes if you have other superscripted and subscripted characters
in the document that should have different sizes or positions. However, this
limitation can be overcome with FrameScript.

Re: Expressing Fractions with Offset Numbers and Division Symbols

2006-07-11 Thread Rick Quatro
Here are some other solutions: You can buy dedicated fraction fonts from
Adobe, Monotype, and others. They will usually match a particular typeface;
for example, Helvetica Fractions matches Helvetica.

Or, if you use a typeface that has a corresponding Expert set, you can use
the Expert font for the fractions. For example, I have Plantin, which has an
expert font called Alt Figures. It contains each number in both numerator
and denominator sizes and positions. The advantage to these numbers is that
their weight is boosted so that don't look lighter than the surrounding
characters, even though they are smaller. Its fraction slash is accessed by
typing a normal forward slash.

Adobe announces FrameMaker DITA Application Pack

2006-07-11 Thread Keith Soltys
In a webinar today, Adobe announced and demoed the FrameMaker DITA
Application Pack, an extension to FrameMaker that adds full DITA support
to FrameMaker 7.2. Adobe did ship a DITA structured application with
FrameMaker 7.2, but the application pack adds much more functionality,
including a DITA menu, support for maps, relationship tables, conrefs,
and ID generation. There will be online help and installation instructions.

Based on what I saw of the demo, this will make it much easier to author
DITA-based content in structured FrameMaker. For example, if you add a
topic reference to a map and the topic doesn't already exist, FrameMaker
will create the topic and assign it a unique ID. If you double-click on
a topic in a map, the topic opens for editing. If you create a conref to
an element that doesn't have an ID, FrameMaker will generate the ID for you.

The Application Pack will be freely available for downloading by
FrameMaker 7.2 users. It'll be in open beta in August, with a full
release sometime later (no specific date was given). Adobe will also be
releasing an S1000D Starter Kit, with will provide similar functionality
for the S1000D users.

This is exciting news for both FrameMaker users and DITA devotees. It's
clear that Adobe is finally devoting more development and marketing
resources to FrameMaker. It will also make it easier for writers like
myself, who don't have the resources of a documentation group with XML
wizards on staff, to adopt structured authoring and DITA.

On a related front, they did say that there will be more FrameMaker
webinars in the fall. They will make the first three webinars, including
today's, available for online viewing sometime soon.

Regards
Keith

Re: Cross-references to Figure/Table captions work in FM, but not in PDF

2006-07-11 Thread Pat Christenson

Hi John -

I have no explanation but I do have a possible solution. When crerating
the PDF, turn on Create Named Destinations. You shouldn't have to do
this for internal xrefs but it solved the problem for a client of mine.

Hi, guys...something weird. I place Figure and Table numbers in my FM

F:Figure n+:\

When I CTRL ALT Mouseover, in the FM document, the link works fine. I
can click the FM X-ref and it goes to the figure or table caption.

The X-ref T markers appears in the captions just like they should.

However, when I convert to PDF using version 7.0 (Distiller 7.0.5)
(Save As - PDF) (PDF version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.0), all the types of
links work in the document except for Figure or Table X-Refs. When I
place the cursor over the Fig or Table X-Refs, it turns to a pointy
hand as it should, the whole X-ref string turns reverse video when I
click as it should, but nothing happens.

I even tried applying the complete range of X-ref formats to the
cross reference just to see if it was because of a x-ref format, but
they all act the same.

Anyone know what might be happening?

I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you've
never actually known what the question is.

FM - tags and text boxes

2006-07-11 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Merry

First, back your file up before you play with text frames on Master
pages. You can get unexpected results. Also, remember that changing the
text frame on a master page changes it for all pages that use that
master page. You can change single body pages (in the same way as I
describe below for master pages), but it's better to avoid doing so. If
you do change a body page, that change is tied to the page number, *not*
the content of the page, so you have to do it just before publication.

So, on your master page, hold down the Ctrl key and click inside a box.
That selects that text frame. Then you can drag it to move it, drag the
handles to resize it, delete it, or use the menu option Format >
Customise layout > Customise text frame to control it.

To select multiple frames, Ctrl-click in each in turn. To deselect
frames, click somewhere on the page outside the frame. You can also copy
a selected frame/s, go to another master page, and paste the selected
frame/s into the page. That can be a quick way to get consistency.

Cheers, Rebecca

Expressing Fractions with Offset Numbers and Division Symbols

2006-07-11 Thread Rick Quatro
First of all, you should use the fraction slash by typing Control+q Shift+z.
Then you can apply character formats to the numerator and denominator. The
numerator format will use the Superscript position and the denominator
format will use the Subscript position. You set the specifications for
superscript and subscript globally in a document by using Format > Document
 > Text Options.

The problem comes if you have other superscripted and subscripted characters
in the document that should have different sizes or positions. However, this
limitation can be overcome with FrameScript.

Does anyone have any advice on how to express fractions with offset numbers
and division symbols? I'd like them to appear as they do in Microsoft
Character Map or Quark (ex. ?). Your suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Expressing Fractions with Offset Numbers and Division Symbols

2006-07-11 Thread Rick Quatro
Here are some other solutions: You can buy dedicated fraction fonts from
Adobe, Monotype, and others. They will usually match a particular typeface;
for example, Helvetica Fractions matches Helvetica.

Or, if you use a typeface that has a corresponding "Expert" set, you can use
the Expert font for the fractions. For example, I have Plantin, which has an
expert font called "Alt Figures." It contains each number in both numerator
and denominator sizes and positions. The advantage to these numbers is that
their weight is boosted so that don't look lighter than the surrounding
characters, even though they are smaller. Its fraction slash is accessed by
typing a normal forward slash.

Nope, they won't show up in the final copy. They are only there for
your editing convenience. Showing or hiding Borders makes the frames
visible so you know where they are. Rebecca gave you the manipulating
details.

Another tip: www.abebooks.com - if your local shop doesn't have it -
or they can order from there, if they belong to ABE.

Sorry about that! I meant to answer to the group (knowledge sharing,
etc.). First reply went just to you, so I just sent it again - this
time to the group. Apologies about the duplication.

Merry,
Do you have access to the Frame manual set and/or the online help and doc?
Supplemental manuals are usually in C:\Program
Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2\OnlineManuals
It's a good starting point for learning about the program...

OT: promotion

2006-07-11 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
Hi all:

If any of you are looking at Oxygen XML (http://www.oxygenxml.com/) please let
me know before you commit. I have a promotional offer that allows people to
save another 15%.

I'm not making anything off it. However, our company presents and shows this
and more at conferences (we'll be at TriXML [http://conf.travelthepath.com],
Doctrain [http://www.doctrain.com] and Lavacon [http://www.lavacon.org]).
SyncRO Soft wanted me to extend an offer to people who attend the conferences
or courses that I teach.

I thought I'd forward the offer early to anyone who can benefit from it. I'm
sending this to several list servers, but please email me directly if you want
the promo code to keep the email volume down.

Thanks in advance,

Bernard

Regards
Keith

FM - text boxes

2006-07-11 Thread Merry Foxworth
When I switch to Master Pages, the dotted boxes look
different from those in Body Pages, so there is no
point in even trying to change them. I have no idea
how one works with them. As someone pointed out, 5.5
is a pretty old version and doesn't have the same
level of support.

Cross-references to Figure/Table captions work in FM, but not in PDF

2006-07-11 Thread John Posada
Hi, guys...something weird. I place Figure and Table numbers in my FM
7.2 documents by cross-referencing to the figure or table caption.
The captions are composed acording to the following:

F:Figure :\
T:Table :\

When I CTRL ALT Mouseover, in the FM document, the link works fine. I
can click the FM X-ref and it goes to the figure or table caption.

The X-ref "T" markers appears in the captions just like they should.

However, when I convert to PDF using version 7.0 (Distiller 7.0.5)
(Save As -> PDF) (PDF version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.0), all the types of
links work in the document except for Figure or Table X-Refs. When I
place the cursor over the Fig or Table X-Refs, it turns to a pointy
hand as it should, the whole X-ref string turns reverse video when I
click as it should, but nothing happens.

I even tried applying the complete range of X-ref formats to the
cross reference just to see if it was because of a x-ref format, but
they all act the same.

Anyone know what might be happening?

Cross-references to Figure/Table captions work in FM, but not in PDF

2006-07-11 Thread Pat Christenson
Hi John -

I have no explanation but I do have a possible solution. When crerating
the PDF, turn on Create Named Destinations. You shouldn't have to do
this for internal xrefs but it solved the problem for a client of mine.
