Folder organisation for multilingual translation projects (FM, Trados, STagger)
Hi all, recently confronted with the problem of organizing folders for multilingual translations, I'm wondering how you organise yours. Let's start with a folder Project including your FM files (in a folder Book_Source) and your images (all in a single folder Images). According to the STagger User's manual, for a translation into one language, you then create 3 folders (still within your Project folder?): MIF (.mif files), Source (.org and source .stf) and Target (target .stf). So if you have to translate, let's say, into 3 diffrerent languages, it would go : MIF, Source and Target_L1, Target_L2, Target_L3 and Target_L4. When you convert from stf to mif, you specify your Source folder and target mif files are generated in Target_L[1-4] folders. Then you convert your mif files into fm (by the way how do you save as fm a mif file without changing its name..?) and save each language in a folder called Book_L[1-4]. Now comes the problem of translated images. How do you organise your Images folder without having to open each file and relink every image? Does the solution consist in splitting your project into 4 distinct Projects (Project_L[1-4]), each containing the source FM files (Book_Source) and Images folder? Or do you use a completely different organisation? Any help appreciated! Hi Mathieu, I don't know how you have your images folder set up, but if you have it set up as a subfolder to your book, I would think it would then be easy to just copy the images folder to each target folder. Then you can replace the images that involve translations, keeping the same filename for each replacement image file. As long as you are calling the images by reference, the translated files should then call the correct replacement images. Does that make sense? Does it help? Color wrestling
I hope there is some color expert out that who can help me with this. In a book that uses black and one spot color, a Pantone, and which should print as a 2-color process: . An image, not created here, that is spot colored, is coming through in PDF or FrameMaker as having some CMYK content (possibly the shading). . FrameMaker and Illustrator use different names for the same Pantone, in Illustrator's case, 201U, and in FrameMaker's case, 201CVU. FrameMaker treats these as two separate colors. I can find no common definition of this Pantone in any of the two application's libraries. My local print shop tell me that these sorts of things cannot be overridden in a pre-press PDF. Has anyone had to handle hassles like this? Is there a way to tell FrameMaker to consider the two colors to be the same thing? Steve We have run into this on occasion with illustrator images. I double checked with my printer and he confirmed the only thing you can do is have your printer merge the two colors that you are getting from the image onto one plate. Should be routine thing there. In a bind + free templates
I just finished a fabulous doc set! But now I'm in a bit of a bind... My company has grown, and so has its documentation. For the most recent release, I had to redesign the printed documentation to address some issues that had arisen as our product line has grown. The docs are all done in unstructured FM with some bits in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign and online help in WebWorks ePublisher. The current doc set comprises 5 manuals, 2 getting started guides, 4 quick-reference cards, and a binder with cover and spine inserts. The manuals are 7x8.5 (half legal size) and the QRCs are 7.5x8.5 so they act as dividers between the manuals. The manuals are Wir-O bound so they can fold back on themselves; this has been extraordinarily popular with our reader base of IT professionals. Then 1/2-inch in from the binding the manuals are 3-hole drilled to fit the binder. The getting started guides are skinny little saddlestitched 5.5 x 8.5 booklets that fit in pockets inside the binder. The whole package looks quite sharp, and it is functional, too. The binder serves as a home for the manuals, any of which might be used at different times by different people within an IT office. It keeps our logo visible on the bookshelf, and makes it easy to find our books (which had been a problem because the Wir-O binding looks like every other book on the shelf). So what's the problem? The new binders do not fit in the newly redesigned shipping box for our product. The guy who led the redesign is the VP Development. He used to be my boss and knew about the binder project, but somehow never remembered to talk to me about the doc sets, which are supposed to go into the box. Now the binder is too fat by 1/4 so it cannot go into the box. Obviously I can't push back on him. Customers who upgrade from a previous version can get the full docset in the binder because they are paying for the shipping anyway - they are not affected by the product box issue because they already got their product. But new customers get everything in the box, and the binder doesn't fit. The chief does not want to add a new box to the deliverables, so shipping the docset separately has been nixed. So I have about 500 binders that I cannot use. I am willing to pass them on at cost to anyone who can use them. I will gladly provide the templates for everything (the manuals (FM), the book covers and binder cover (AI), the QRCs (FM), the getting started guides. The templates are set up for single-sourcing, too - I output the FM files as print, online pDF, and three WebWorks Help projects, and I have to rebrand it all for a partner when it is finished. You can have the WebWorks templates, too. These are good, solid, attractive templates that work well. Internet explorer glitch
After I upload a file update to my webserver, I like to test the upload by downloading it using Internet Explorer. However, the file I download is always the original version, not the update. FireFox doesn't suffer this problem. If I give the update a different name, even if it's only one letter different, I'm able to download the update. But if the name is the same then the earlier version is what gets downloaded. This occurs even if I delete the earlier version before I upload the update, so it makes me think that IE is sending me a cached copy of the earlier version. However, clearing my cache doesn't help. That seems odd... So you actively replace the files on the webserver but it still returns the old file? I need to collect folder names with full paths into a lost which I can then use to find a file. Does anyone know how to get such a list. Or a basic algorithm on how to parse the folders in the server? Need to Change the Company Name on the Master Pages of LOTS of Manuals
Effective next Monday, 11/20, our company will have a new name. As a result, we need to change the name on the Master Pages of MANY pages of MANY manuals. The footers on the Master Pages are set up follows: Created Date: Manual Name Revised Date: XXX (Co. Name) Restricted Page # We don't want to change anything except the company name and if we apply our current template, the dates would change. There's probably a simple method for making this change, but my mind's a blank & I've not been able to come up with anything. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give!
