Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker
First off, thanks to all those who helped me with my document containing both 81/2x11 and 11x17 pages. As suggested, I pulled out the 11x17 pages into a new document that will be another chapter in the book. Now I'm seeing a problem in autonumbering that is defying all my newbie efforts to fix. As mentioned before, we are running FM8 on PCs. We have styles defined for Tables and Figures. The Autonumber Format (from the Numbering tab on Paragraph Designer) for Tables is Table $chapnum.$volnum-n -n+ so the first table in Section 5 should be Table 5.1-5-1 . And, indeed that's what the first table in Section 5 is labeled. Several pages later, at the next table the Autonumber Format is Table $chapnum.$volnum-n -n+ that should be labeling the table Table 5.1-5-2. But instead it's coming out as Table 5.1-5-1 . Skipping forward several pages, the next table is labeled Table 5.1-5.2. The one after that is Table 5.1-5-3. The one after that is labeled Table 5.1-5-1 . The Autonumber Format is Table $chapnum.$volnum-n -n+ Anyone have any idea of what's causing this? And more importantly, how it can be fixed? I've tried deleting the tables, importing the info as unformatted text, and if the new table is inserted right after the old one, it numbers correctly, but if it's inserted back into the original location I get the same problem. I've recreated the tables into a new document (and the autonumbers behave in that) but when I paste them into the original document--same problem. I've copied the code and pasted in to the Autonumber Format text box, and that hasn't fixed it. I'm truly stumped. Re: Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker
Check that the styles with numbering formats that fall between those tables are replicating the proper stream. Someone is either off a placeholder, or resetting your numbers. FM9 Buggy UI Behavior
Hi all, I have started testing FM 9 p230. Over all, I like the new UI design. However, I have noticed one issue right off the bat. When I rearrange/minimize windows, drag tabs and pods around, or change work spaces, the UI starts behaving oddly for a couple seconds in the following ways. -Menus will start shaking and shifting around -UI elements bleed into one another -the selection for user defined work spaces disappears from the work space menu Has anyone else experienced problems like this?? -- Sincerely, Joseph Lorenzini ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker
Scott's idea is something I didn't notice when you published your numbering strings. Insert a letter in front of the string to specify a unique numbering stream -- you can have 50+ of them, but it's best to make each type unique. Specifying a specific stream ensures that other tags won't reset one particular tag. For example, you could make your table string unique by preceding it with a t: to make it: t:Table $chapnum.$volnum-n -n+ . Then save and update. For Figures, you may use an f like this: f:Figure $chapnum.$volnum-n -n+ Art Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com ... RE: Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker
One of the main advantages of Art's suggested method should be that your strings will contain less building blocks. Since you are using $chapnum we know you are not using FM5.5 or earlier, so your strings are likely overly complex. For instance, your t: series will not require placeholders for all sections and figures. The same holds true for your Sections (s:) series and your Figures (f:) series. They all will only need building blocks for the related sections within the series. It's a double bonus...less errors and less confusion! -Matt Matt Sullivan GRAFIX Training m...@roundpeg.com www.roundpeg.com Office 714 960-6840 Cell 714 585-2335 skype: mattatroundpeg LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/grafixtraining facebook| plaxo Click to tell me the social media sites you belong to -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Art Campbell Sent: Monday, April 13, 2009 1:18 PM To: Eva Whitley; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Re: Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker Scott's idea is something I didn't notice when you published your numbering strings. Re: FM9 Buggy UI Behavior
Hi Art, When you mentioned the video card, an idea occurred to me. I am using a Dell lap top, which is hooked up to a dell flat screen monitor. The monitor's highest resolution is 1680 by 1050 pixels, the lap top's highest resolution is 1440 by 900 pixels. When I placed the FM 9 window in the lap top, no issues occurred with the GUI, while on the monitor issues did occur. Then, I reduced my monitor's resolution from 1680 by 1050 to 1440 by 900 (the same res as my monitor). Once I did that, the distortions to the FM 9 GUI stopped occurring. Apparently, my monitor's res had to match my lap top's res, otherwise FM 9's ability to display the GUI is interfered with. Has anyone else had a similar experience? RE: FM9 Buggy UI Behavior
I use a similar, albeit older, laptop - it is a Dell 820 with a nVidia Quadro 120 graphics card and an external Dell 24 LCD (at 1920 x 1200) and do not remember seeing these screen artifacts when I trialed FM 9. Since my trial license has expired, I cannot test again ... L One other thought perhaps: I do have 2GB of memory ... how much does your laptop have? Hi Syed, My laptop has 2 GB of memory. I have had previous issues with this lap top being buggy, though nothing like this. I suppose it could all be related, but who knows? Re: Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker
I would note, that while the series letter is very important, and will regularize the numbering stream, it seems likely that Eva is using a single stream in order to restart the numbering sequence at the start of each section/chapter without using a separate start style. If that is indeed the case, she should still use a single series identifier, but use it in all instances of numbering. Doing so will ensure that there aren't any radical burbs in numbering. I remember doing similar, though with a much simpler sequence stream. If the series ID is left off, then the behavior she mentions would occur.
-- Sincerely, Joseph Lorenzini

Hi Art, Apparently, I spoke too soon. The GUI distortions started occurring at the lower res on my monitor right after I sent out an email saying they didn't. So I am not sure what is going on. However, it is still the case that FM 9's GUI renders without any problem on my lap top's monitor. Are you using the DVI connector or the VGA connector on the laptop (to connect to the external monitor - which I assume is an LCD monitor)? If not DVI, can you try that and see if the problem persists? Also, have you tried switching from dual-screen mode (where the output is on both screens) to single-screen on the external monitor? Which laptop and graphics card is it, by the way? Hi Syed, I did try switching to the single screen mode on the external monitor. It had no affect. Also, I've noticed that the GUI distortions only occur when I maximize the FM window and/or change the workspace while the FM window is maximized. If the FM window isn't fully maximized, then the GUI distortions do not occur when I change the workspaces. Here are the specs. -DVI connector -Dell E228WFP LCD Monitor -Lap top: Dell Latitude D630 -Graphics card: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M Thanks for the help, Joe On Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 6:37 PM, wrote: > Are you using the DVI connector or the VGA connector on the laptop (to > connect to the external monitor - which I assume is an LCD monitor)? I use a similar, albeit older, laptop - it is a Dell 820 with a nVidia Quadro 120 graphics card and an external Dell 24" LCD (at 1920 x 1200) and do not remember seeing these screen artifacts when I trialed FM 9. Since my trial license has expired, I cannot test again ... L One other thought perhaps: I do have 2GB of memory ... how much does your laptop have? Since these graphics cards only have 256MB on board, they have to use some system memory when displaying full-screen stuff and if you do not have enough memory in your laptop, this may be swapping to the disk and creating the artifacts you see. This is a SWAG though! Otherwise, I am at a loss to explain the problems ... sorry! Hi Syed, My laptop has 2 GB of memory. I have had previous issues with this lap top being buggy, though nothing like this. I suppose it could all be related, but who knows? I am just glad that it isn't a defect with the product because the more I use the UI the more I love it. Weird autonumbering problem with Framemaker
