Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
Hi, all. I'm working in FM 10 in a Win 7 environment. I have placed some tall, thin graphics in an anchored frame that is run into the paragraph and positioned Left on the page. The text flows down the right side of the graphic. Everything works beautifully except I can't figure out how to keep the caption with the graphic. Sometimes the text is not as tall as the graphic, so I would have to use a series of returns to move the cursor down to beneath the anchored frame, and enter the caption there. This is do-able but clunky and prone to problems if the text is ever edited. I therefore created a text frame inside the anchored frame and put the caption there, which works physically but breaks the hyperlinks to the cross-reference in the text (See Figure X.) For the time being, I've deleted the x-refs, since they aren't really necessary in such an obvious page layout. (But one of my reviewers is absolutely going to say, where's the 'See Figure X' Be copnsistent! Consistency above all else!!) How can I get a caption with working hyperlinks positioned directly under the anchored frame? Thanks. ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. (But one of my reviewers is absolutely going to say, where's the 'See Figure X' Be copnsistent! Consistency above all else!!) I'm slightly baffled here, unless I've misunderstood you. If by hyperlinks you mean a cross-reference from the text to a figure caption within a text frame within an anchored frame (which will appear as a hyperlink in a PDF), then that's the way I've been doing figure captions for years. The type of anchored frame shouldn't make any difference. If by 'it breaks the hyperlinks', you mean that the figure caption cross-references break when you *move* the captions into the text frames, then that should not happen: the existing cross-reference destination marker should move with the text. Or perhaps you mean that the figure reference is itself in the text you moved into the text frame within the figure's anchored frame? The figure caption should in a text frame which should have no flow tag. I am looking at one working here. However, if there is something about your setup I've not understood, maybe you could send a test file for me to look at? -- Steve ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Re: Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
Thanks to everyone who has replied on the list or privately! I discovered that I didn't have the problem I thought I had. I had another one. If you are curious, read on. I was adding x-refs into the text methodically, going from figure to figure. When I went looking for Figure 2-8, it wasn't there in the Cross-ref'erence drop-down list.. The list skipped from Figure 2-7 to Figure 2-10. I assumed that it happened because I'd put the captions to Figures 2-8 and 2-9 into the anchored frame and Frame had not seen them. I didn't scroll down further, because never in 20 years has FrameMaker listed the figure numbers out of order. But when I do scroll down in the listing in the Cross-Reference box, the list goes like this: Figure 2-6 Figure 2-7 Figure 2-10 Figure 2-8 Figure 2-9 Figure 2-9 Figure 2-10 Figure 2-8 Figure 2-11 Figure 2-12 and on normally. Now I am hunting through the file using Find -- Paragraph Tag Caption to see what it turns up. Maybe I've buried figure tags behind anchored frames or some such bizarre thing. This problem is definitely related to my use of Run-in anchored frames, which I've never used before . . . but I think I did something strange, not FrameMaker! --Nancy ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: Re: Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
Hi Alison, To have the cross-reference source text out of order is not uncommon with FrameMaker. It will get the figure captions in the main flow first, and then pick up the ones inside of the anchored frames. This will sometimes happen with your generated lists like TOCs. Re: Re: Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
Nancy Not nodded off at all. Out of sequence figure numbers aren't that unusual in FrameMaker, but missing figure numbers in an xref list are definitely pathological. As to the former, I've never really researched what causes it, but it's certainly linked to two figures falling on the same page. As to your screenshot, I'd be immediately alerted to the apparent presence of doubled-up figure numbers. As FrameMaker's numbering engine works per-flow, my initial though would be that you have two mixed flows. That would sure as hell confuse both you and FrameMaker. I will now go and read all the latest posting to see what you really do have ;-) -- Steve ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Ken, thank you! To understand your description fully, I have a couple of questions. You wrote: The graphic numbering itself is done using a text string we named Section Graphic Counter located inside the small text box below the graphic (but inside the anchored frame). By text string do you mean paragraph tag? If you mean something else, I don't follow what that could be. If Section Graphic Counter is a paragraph tag, did you use F:Fig. $chapnum-n+ as the counter in this tag? You wrote: Yet, we found that sometimes, for whatever reason, the building blocks on some counters were Fig. $chapnum-n+ (note the missing F: preceding the word Fig.) Clicking on a correctly defined Section Graphic Counter, then choosing Update All took care of our numbering problems. By in some counters do you mean that you had various instances of the paragraph tag Section Graphic Counter that had been manually changed so that the counter did not have the F:? So when you clicked one of the correct Section Graphic Counter paragraph tags and Updated All to match that one, your counting problems went away? newlinks and gotolinks in Acrobat
Hello Framers, A client uncovered a problem that I was previously not aware of. If you insert matching newlink and gotolink markers in a document, and you Control+Alt+Click on the gotolink marker, FrameMaker will jump to the newlink marker as you would expect. However, after you make the PDF, the link no longer goes to the location of the named destination created by the newlink marker, but it goes to the named destination of the paragraph containing the marker. In most cases, you won't notice it, but if the paragraph starts on a different page than the marker location, then it becomes a problem. Interestingly, a named destination for the newlink marker is created in the PDF, but the link does not point to that destination; it points to the named destination for the paragraph, which is at the start of the paragraph. Frankly, I am dumbfounded by this behavior. I tested it in FrameMaker 8 and 10 and it works the same. It looks like a case of Adobe trying to help, but for this client, it makes these links unusable in many cases. If you are having trouble visualizing what I am talking about, you can download a sample PDF at http://www.rickquatro.com/resources/LinkTest.pdf or a zip file containing both the FrameMaker file and PDF: http://www.rickquatro.com/resources/LinkTest.zip Rick Quatro Carmen Publishing Inc. 585-283-5045 585-219-8959 fax r...@frameexpert.com http://www.frameexpert.com ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Better Way to Assign Master Pages?
Hello Framers, Is there in Frame 9 a quick (or at least efficient) way of assigning a master page to multiple body pages at once? I am dumping text from one Frame doc into another that is essentially a galley proof--one text frame with changing running heads based half on heading tags and half on other content. Applying a master page to a range of body pages (or all pages) in the Master Page Usage dialog would take care of only a portion of my document at best, since the running heads often change every page and often are not consecutive. I tried mapping a master page to a heading tag in the Master Page Maps reference page, but that doesn't seem to work: once I manually apply a master page, the reference page setting for until changed appears to function, but the master associated with the heading isn't being applied automatically in the first place. Maybe I don't understand the operation of the Master Page Maps table? I am wishing for something like QuarkXPress' Page Layout palette, where one can click-and-drag a master page icon onto a page or group of page icons to apply. Hope I've just forgotten something simple--very possible since I only do this project once a year. I don't look forward to applying master pages manually hundreds of times. I would use a 1-column, 2-cell table to do this. Grant On May 24, 2012 at 7:48 AM Nancy Allison ma...@verizon.net wrote: Hi, all. I'm working in FM 10 in a Win 7 environment. Sometimes the text is not as tall as the graphic, so I would have to use a series of returns to move the cursor down to beneath the anchored frame, and enter the caption there. I therefore created a text frame inside the anchored frame and put the caption there, which works physically but breaks the hyperlinks to the cross-reference in the text (See Figure X.) Integrating table footnotes into chapter flow.
Good morning, I have a book where the powers that be want ALL footnotes to be part of the same numbering sequence and appear at the bottom of pages... even footnotes whose references appear in tables. Since by default footnotes within a table are placed immediately below the table and have their own lettering/numbering, How do I accomplish this? The only way that I'm aware of is a hack/kludge that almost makes things worse: Within tables place superscripted text that mimics a footnote reference, and then immediately above or below the table, place the real footnote, with the reference tagged in white so it is invisible when printing. I hate it, and presents a royal fustercluck if any footnotes are added or removed within the chapter. Is there a workable fix? Thanks in advance. Re: Re: Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
Nancy, We number our images as described earlier (a text box positioned below the graphic with both the graphic and text box within an anchored frame). In our case, our style is for the anchored frame is consistently 3.25 inches wide, variable height, right-aligned (on the right side of the page), and anchored as Run into Paragraph with the text on the left side of the page. Pretty standard. The graphic image itself is consistently 2.75 inches wide of variable height (depending on the subject being portrayed). NOTE: The reason for the slightly wider anchored graphic is to force the text at the left side of the page to be no more than 3.75 inches wide. Yeah, I know that the better way is to simply define that right-margin in Format -- Paragraph -- Designer -- Basic, but even though I prefer consistent page layout even if there is no graphic on the right side, I lost that battle and sometimes we have full-page width text, sometimes not. Some of you might recall my recent rants about my recent battle to use running headers instead of simply the chapter name in the chapter headers. This is a hell of a place. ANYWAY . . . The graphic numbering itself is done using a text string we named Section Graphic Counter located inside the small text box below the graphic (but inside the anchored frame). We found that one must be VERY detail-oriented with this stuff, because after having problems similar to yours (Nancy), we discovered the problem was in the syntax of the definition. Specifically, using Format -- Paragraph -- Designer -- Numbering, the building blocks were F:Fig. $chapnum-n+ Yet, we found that sometimes, for whatever reason, the building blocks on some counters were Fig. $chapnum-n+ (note the missing F: preceding the word Fig.) Clicking on a correctly defined Section Graphic Counter, then choosing Update All took care of our numbering problems. Our remaining problem is how to position the graphic counter box consistently just-so; it's supposed to be flush left with the graphic and just a teeny-tiny bot below the graphic (note the professional distance description). That's my take on it. -- Kenpo in Atlanta From: Nancy Allison ma...@verizon.net To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Sent: Thu, May 24, 2012 10:58:41 AM Subject: Re: Re: Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure Thanks to everyone who has replied on the list or privately! Section Graphic Counter (was: Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure)
Hi Nancy, Yes, we created a paragraph tag with that name and defined it as described. But a previous member of the tech pubs department here haphazardly did what he wanted to do. He couldn't write, wouldn't follow directions, wouldn't spell-check, wouldn't proofread, but DID create or modify paragraph tags to his liking. So, yes, and when we built one book using another as a template, we sometimes found problems with its graphic image numbering thanks to this guy. So yes, the paragraph tag should be defined as F: Fig. $chapnum-n+ This results in (for instance) Fig. 2-3 (the third graphic in section 2 of the book). One caveat: In order to make sure your first graphic of the current book section is numbered 1, you have either of two methods to use: * Create a separate paragraph tag called Section Graphic Counter 1 and define it as F: Fig. $chapnum-n=1OR * Remember to go into the building block field to change n+ to n=1 and click ApplyOtherwise, the first graphic of the next book section will be the next sequential number from the previous book section. There's nothing like overlooking this and then seeing your 300-page pdf coming out with the first graphic of section 6 as Fig. 6-234 (or whatever). Just catch it before you go to print or post it online for the universe to see. When it works, it works beautifully. When it doesn't, you just want to scream. -- Kenpo in Atlanta From: Nancy Allison ma...@verizon.net To: poshe...@bellsouth.net; framers@lists.frameusers.com Sent: Thu, May 24, 2012 1:08:24 PM Subject: Re: Re: Re: Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure Ken, thank you! Hi Ed, Frame 7.0 didn't support Unicode. As I recall, when we were faced with a similar problem, we had to perform some registry editing to get Frame to see Arial TUR. You'll have to search online for the coding because it's been long enough I've forgotten how we did it. RE: Better Way to Assign Master Pages?
Karen Robbins wrote: Is there in Frame 9 a quick (or at least efficient) way of assigning a master page to multiple body pages at once? I am dumping text from one Frame doc into another that is essentially a galley proof--one text frame with changing running heads based half on heading tags and half on other content. The quick and efficient way is to use FM's default Right and Left master pages (for two-sided docs), which are automatically applied to right and left pages that you don't assign a custom master page to. It sounds like you're not using those at all and are trying to use custom master pages for every page. I can't imagine why that would be necessary. But then I don't really understand what you're saying about running heads. What I think of as running heads are normally implemented via the Running H/F system variables (of which there are a bunch). The definition of a Running H/F variable can specify a list of paragraph tags from which it pulls the content specified by its building blocks, displaying on any given page the content for the first instance of one of the specified paragraphs. For instance, Running H/F 1 might be defined as: $paratext[Head1, Head2, Head3, NoteHead, SomeOtherPgfTag, YetAnotherPgfTag] If the first instance of any of those pgf tags on a page is Head3, Running H/F 1 would display the text of that Head3 in the running head of that page. So you don't need a custom master page to change what the running head displays. Even if you need more than the default Right and Left pages, they should work for the majority of the pages, with a limited number of custom master pages for the outlier cases. I don't use master page mapping, but I understand it's a pretty solid feature. Are you remembering to apply master pages when you update the book? It's a check box in the Update Book dialog box. HTH, and apologies if I've misunderstood the problem. Richard G. RE: Best way to rename individual book files and book name in FrameMaker 9
Will someone please help with this question? Thank you, John 1. Start by making a backup copy of everything in case you mess up, so that you can recover gracefully! 2. Exit FrameMaker (or certainly make darn sure that you are not editing the book or any of its files!) 3. In the OS (I assume Windows), change _just_ the book name to whatever you need it to be - whether you do this in a DOS window or from the File Explorer is up to you. 4. Open the newly renamed book in FrameMaker - you will see the included filenames still be the old name(s). 5. Individually change the file names of each file of the book, from _inside_ the book (i.e., within FrameMaker). Of course, this could be painful if there are a large number of files inside the book ... in that case, I would probably prefer to mess with the MIF copies of the files and book with a text editor instead. This needs care, of course. Z ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com. RE: Best way to rename individual book files and book name in FrameMaker 9
Gelo, John wrote: Will someone please help with this question? You have to rename the component files of a book in the book window, or you'll break all references between files. Right-click a file and select Rename File. Unless it's changed since 7.2, you'll have to acknowledge a couple of messages for each name change, so it's a bit of a PITA for a big book. You could rename the book in Windows Explorer (or your preferred file manager), but it's simpler, IMHO, to just do File Save Book As in FM. If you do that, FM renames the generated files (TOC, etc.) to match the book name. Later, you can just delete the old book file. HTH! Richard G. Re: Integrating table footnotes into chapter flow.
Hi Dan, I feel your pain, having been there, done that. I figure the demand arises because there is a certain, single word processor that does it that way, albeit that this way is not correct. Organising the footnote numbering sequence is not much of an issue. This is part of the numbering control at the book level (assuming you are using a book file). FM footnotes typically appear at the bottom of the page (it is normally demands for end notes that get people worked up). The only effective work around I was able to muster was to use tab delimited text, but that meant no table rules. I made paragraph formats with appropriately positioned tabs. In the case I refer to, few entries wrapped and those that did were able to be positioned at the end of the line. What you have described sounds the best option. At least in this instance, if the numbering changes, you can control it. I would change things slightly: 1. By formatting the text you said would be white as red, until proofing stage. Create a paragraph format and call it TblFtntPara. I would set the text to red, then change it the size to be 1pt and white. 2a. In the footnote text, insert a unique marker (sequential numbering or something). 2b. Create a character format and call it something like TblSupScrpt: the format will be superscripted, with all else As is. 2c. Create a cross reference format that displays the footnote number only, and uses the TblSupScrpt format (like this TablSupScrpt$paranumonly). 2c. Then for the superscripted number to appear in the table, insert a cross reference to the marker in the footnote. The number will appear superscripted, and will be the number of the footnote.
I therefore created a text frame inside the anchored frame and put the caption there, which works physically but breaks the hyperlinks to the cross-reference in the text "(See Figure X.") For the time being, I've deleted the x-refs, since they aren't really necessary in such an obvious page layout. (But one of my reviewers is absolutely going to say, "where's the 'See Figure X' Be copnsistent! Consistency above all else!!") How can I get a caption with working hyperlinks positioned directly under the anchored frame? Thanks.

(But one of >my reviewers is absolutely going to say, "where's the 'See Figure X' Be >copnsistent! Consistency above all else!!") I'm slightly baffled here, unless I've misunderstood you. -- Steve
Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
Thanks to everyone who has replied on the list or privately! I discovered that I didn't have the problem I thought I had. I had another one. If you are curious, read on. I was adding x-refs into the text methodically, going from figure to figure. When I went looking for Figure 2-8, it wasn't there in the Cross-ref'erence drop-down list.. The list skipped from Figure 2-7 to Figure 2-10. I assumed that it happened because I'd put the captions to Figures 2-8 and 2-9 into the anchored frame and Frame had not "seen" them. Now I am hunting through the file using Find -- Paragraph Tag "Caption" to see what it turns up. Maybe I've buried figure tags behind anchored frames or some such bizarre thing. This problem is definitely related to my use of Run-in anchored frames, which I've never used before . . . but I think I did something strange, not FrameMaker! --Nancy

Hi Alison, To have the cross-reference source text out of order is not uncommon with FrameMaker. It will get the figure captions in the main flow first, and then pick up the ones inside of the anchored frames. This will sometimes happen with your generated lists like TOCs. Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
I will now go and read all the latest posting to see what you really do have ;-) -- Steve

Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
" Ken, thank you! To understand your description fully, I have a couple of questions. You wrote: "The graphic numbering itself is done using a text string we named "Section Graphic Counter" located inside the small text box below the graphic (but inside the anchored frame)." By "text string" do you mean paragraph tag? If you mean something else, I don't follow what that could be. If "Section Graphic Counter" is a paragraph tag, did you use F:Fig. <$chapnum>-as the counter in this tag? You wrote: "Yet, we found that sometimes, for whatever reason, the building blocks on some counters were Fig. <$chapnum>- (note the missing "F:" preceding the word "Fig.") Clicking on a correctly defined Section Graphic Counter, then choosing "Update All" took care of our numbering problems." By "in some counters" do you mean that you had various instances of the paragraph tag Section Graphic Counter that had been manually changed so that the counter did not have the "F:"? So when you clicked one of the correct Section Graphic Counter paragraph tags and Updated All to match that one, your counting problems went away? Thanks. --Nancy
newlinks and gotolinks in Acrobat
It looks like a case of Adobe trying to "help", but for this client, it makes these links unusable in many cases. 585-283-5045 585-219-8959 fax rick at frameexpert.com http://www.frameexpert.com
I tried mapping a master page to a heading tag in the Master Page Maps reference page, but that doesn't seem to work: once I manually apply a master page, the reference page setting for "until changed" appears to function, but the master associated with the heading isn't being applied automatically in the first place. Thanks, Karen

Best way to rename individual book files and book name in FrameMaker 9
Will someone please help with this question? Thank you, John
Integrating table footnotes into chapter flow.
Positioning Caption Under Run-in Figure
e and Frame had not "seen" them. --Nancy -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
So yes, the paragraph tag should be defined as "F: Fig. <$chapnum>-" This results in (for instance) "Fig. 2-3" (the third graphic in section 2 of the book). One caveat: In order to make sure your first graphic of the current book section is numbered "1", you have either of two methods to use: * Create a separate paragraph tag called "Section Graphic Counter 1" and define it as F: Fig.

Hi Ed, Frame 7.0 didn't support Unicode. As I recall, when we were faced with a similar problem, we had to perform some registry editing to get Frame to see Arial TUR. You'll have to search online for the coding because it's been long enough I've forgotten how we did it. Even there, because Frame allocates certain key codes to internal functions, some letters consistently mapped incorrectly and had to be edited manually. ? Better Way to Assign Master Pages?
Karen Robbins wrote: > Is there in Frame 9 a quick (or at least efficient) way of assigning > a master page to multiple body pages at once? > > I am dumping text from one Frame doc into another that is essentially > a galley proof--one text frame with changing running heads based half > on heading tags and half on other content. For instance, Running H/F 1 might be defined as: <$paratext[Head1, Head2, Head3, NoteHead, SomeOtherPgfTag, YetAnotherPgfTag]> If the first instance of any of those pgf tags on a page is Head3, Running H/F 1 would display the text of that Head3 in the running head of that page. So you don't need a custom master page to change what the running head displays. Even if you need more than the default Right and Left pages, they should work for the majority of the pages, with a limited number of custom master pages for the "outlier" cases. I don't use master page mapping, but I understand it's a pretty solid feature. Are you remembering to apply master pages when you update the book? It's a check box in the Update Book dialog box. HTH, and apologies if I've misunderstood the problem. Richard G. Combs Senior Technical Writer Polycom, Inc. richardDOTcombs AT polycomDOTcom 303-223-5111 -- rgcombs AT gmailDOTcom 303-903-6372 --
Best way to rename individual book files and book name in FrameMaker 9
> Will someone please help with this question? > Thank you, > John 1. Z
Best way to rename individual book files and book name in FrameMaker 9
Gelo, John wrote: > Will someone please help with this question? You have to rename the component files of a book in the book window, or you'll break all references between files. Right-click a file and select Rename File. Unless it's changed since 7.2, you'll have to acknowledge a couple of messages for each name change, so it's a bit of a PITA for a big book. You could rename the book in Windows Explorer (or your preferred file manager), but it's simpler, IMHO, to just do File > Save Book As in FM. If you do that, FM renames the generated files (TOC, etc.) to match the book name. Later, you can just delete the old book file. HTH! Richard G.
