Draft material in BSPerf.fm table rows - promote to Experimental?

2015-05-21 Thread Fausset, Marilyn
Brett (et al),
I found DRAFT material in tables in the BS Performance profile. Should these be
promoted to Experimental?
I've screen-capped these DRAFT rows in the tables below.
Please advise.
Thanks.

FM12 bug - updating File Info

2015-05-21 Thread John Sgammato
I just discovered a minor but annoying bug in FM12 with the File Info
feature, under the File menu.
If you have a book with some chapters, the book file and the chapters can
have File Info, a set of 8 bits of metadata like Title, Subject, Keywords,
etc. Each chapter can have its own File Info, and the Book can have File
Info.
File Info carries through to PDFs Properties and the title appears in
search results if you publish to HTML5.
Here's the bug: If you have any value at all in the title field, then you
can bulk-update it to another title via File > Import > Formats Document
Properties. You can also delete the title. But you cannot bulk update an
existing title to no title, or to a space. One you have a title, you
apparently must always have a title, or else delete it one at a time, file
by file.

RE: PDF problems

2015-05-21 Thread Fred Ridder
Actually, in most cases the place to start looking for the problem is about 2
pages *before* the page that is indicated when the error occurs. Much of the
processing of a PDF file is pipelined, so that at least one or two pages (N-2
and N-1) are still being worked on when the application reports that page N is
the page being processed "now".

This is a vexing type of problem. It may be a non-obvious corrupt
graphic or other object. I recommend "divide and conquer", either in
FrameMaker 12 or in Acrobat.

- Split the file in half.

- Identify the half-file that produces the error.

- Split the error-prone half-file again.

- Repeat until you've identified the page/object that is causing the
error.

As David Spreadbury suggests, if the printer can tell you the page
that invokes the failure, start looking there.

Re: PDF problems

2015-05-21 Thread David Spreadbury
I suggested that the printer provide more details on the problem because it
would appear that their rendering engine doesn't like something...duh...
similar to what Distiller does when it encounters an error. Since Alan doesn't
get an error when distilling, he would not be able to do more than he has done
without some more specific feedback.

RE: cross-ref to marker(text)

2015-05-21 Thread Keith Soltys
You can do it with the newlink/gotolink hypertext markers. Use the newlink
marker to create the anchor name for the link, placed in the file and at the
location you are linking to (I usually put mine in the section heading). Inside
the text of the link itself, put a gotolink marker with the form
filename:Newlink. Format the text of your link and your marker with the same
character style (whatever you use for a hyperlink, like blue underlined).

Keith

Hi all,

Alternative could be to create a hypertext marker - but how can a Hypertext

Any other suggestions for the above? Client wants to make hyperlinks in the

Re: Setting up page numbers that restart with chapter number

2015-05-21 Thread Shmuel

It sounds like you are putting all the chapters in one FrameMaker
file. Generally people who use FrameMaker put each chapter in a
separate file and add all the files to a Book file. Are you doing
that? If yes, then each chapter automatically restarts the numbering
unless you select otherwise in the file's Numbering properties.
