Re: [Framers] Printing Tag Properties

2023-12-14 Thread Craig Ede
Hello Alison,

Since anything can happen in a FrameMaker file that is out there in use, I
always document my templates by writing a style guide in that template going
through all the various tags, and other settings that make up a FrameMaker
file. By keeping that information in the template you prevent redefinition of
elements in one book/file from being mistaken for the sanctioned settings. It
also allows importing of the definitions of any of the elements from the
template when you have to bring a book/file back into compliance with a
template.

This worked well when have 50+ engineers working in the individual files that
make up a book, some of whom are only casually interested in not using the Word
format-as-you-go method of working.

In my opinion, any FrameMaker template should self document in this way so that
one knows the rules one is working with.

Those are my 2 cents worth.

Subject: [Framers] Printing Tag Properties

Is there a way to print Character, Paragraph and Table tag properties
directly from a Frame file?

As a lone writer, I never have time to create a decent style guide, but in
the Spring I'm going to have access to a student from a local tech comm
program and I want them to at least start documenting tags for a style
guide.

If there's a way to export these details, even if the output isn't pretty,
that would be great.

Re: [Framers] Autonumber/autoincrement independent of paragraph style?

2023-07-17 Thread Craig Ede
Sound like that would work, but that solution was obscured by the way the
original question was framed. Knowing what the use case is helps reframe the
question. However, footnote insertion just indicates a point in the text. Maybe
applying a Conditional Text attribute to the range of text could be used,
allowing the reviewers to see what the citation needs to cover. If you require
a number for each range, that could be done by post-processing the conditional
text markers.

Oh. Footnotes. Then the missing citations' footnotes just read "[needs
citation]"

Seems trivial, that way. They will auto increment. (Unless reset by the book
file's chapter numbering.)

What am I missing that keeps that from being the obvious solution?

I'm prepping a chapter of a textbook for a peer group meeting (review to be
held using paper copy, not electronic). Author fell down on the job and there
are a host of places throughout where citations are needed (80+).

So I'm adding callouts for the group as to what content needs citations. In
some cases it is an entire section (callout added to header), in others it is a
particular paragraph or multiple paragraphs (callout on line preceding
paragraph), and most are specific sentences within a paragraph (callouts
inline) with the possibility that more than one callout is needed in a given
paragraph. Also, they could be any sentence within the paragraph.

For expediency, based upon initial responses here, I just did them by hand, but
it would be interesting to know if there is an autonumber method that could
work if this happens again.

Thanks,

It would be fascinating to hear the use case, as you imply. Probably the

parse the whole thing after the fact, replacing each marker with an incremented

You can't increment variables with counters. This may be a good candidate
for a script. It's not clear to me the use case for this, but if you contact

I would try to tie it to a paragraph style, then make it a run-in paragraph
that doesn't cause a line break. Manually apply it where you want it, press

Fiddly, but should work. Flies in the face of structured documentation, but
your use case seems to be inherently unstructured anyway.

something.

I need a counter/variable that autoincrements, but NOT tied to a specific
paragraph style. This counter might appear in any number of different
paragraph styles and at different positions in the paragraph.

Variables seem like they should be the way to go, but it appears that there
isn't an auto-increment component to them, e.g., like when numbering
paragraphs or list elements.

All online resources I can find discuss autonumbering within the context of
the paragraph designer, but that's not what I need.

I fully agree with your arguments, Tammy. From time to time I look into the

I'm retired since 15 years now (well, as a free lancer one defines oneself when

'customers' requiring help from time to time. And yes, I still create (and

Yes, it has been a longish dry spell on Framers. Possible reasons:
 - a long holiday break

 - or ??
I do miss the liveliness (and informativeness) this list used to provide. The

The Windows memory leak problem has been longstanding. We used to have to
restart FrameMaker at least once a day (and reboot once a day, too) while the
SUN workstations would run without rebooting for months. I don’t think it
trusting Windows beyond a day is sensible. Shut down at night and start fresh

I have the very latest version of FrameMaker (Windows) and it still, like
earlier versions, freezes after a few days of use, unpredictably, with a
botched-up display (see example below) and no responsiveness. I have to kill
the process with the Task Manager, get rid of *.lck files, get rid of the
*auto files (or rename them, saving the originals just in case into another
directory), restart the whole thing, check manually that the chapters are
in the right state - all tedious for a 40-chapter book.

It's really bizarre that after all these years, in a product with the Adobe
label, there are still such crashes.

Does anyone know any way to present them from happening? I guess exiting
after a few days of use and restarting is prudent (if unpleasant in 2022),
is there a better way?

Thanks,

I once worked (briefly) for a company that was using Fmbatch to generate books
nightly but refused to update to fmbatch 5.5 from fmbatch 5.0 for 'validation'
reasons. This meant that if a book generation failed it just failed to generate
the book and PDF and posted an error, usually an unresolved creo. They were
using more a more advanced version of FM on both Windows and SUN machines and
the repositories were MIFs (thus no problem opening the files from a more
advanced version). Fmbatch 5.5 would generate the books, even if there was an
error (-noerror option if I recall). Once I got them to switch over we could
reliably generate nightly PDFs and the number of pdf working copies we
generated nightly allowed the engineering teams to have "current state" docs to
work with. Not sure how they handled the validation, but it was definitely
worth it as we were quickly playing BACH nightly for hours at a time.

Importing the tags would simply import fresh para tags with the language still

I want to change the language to German - hopefully in some kind of batch

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding something in your explanation.

Can I do this in this in the MIF files with Search and Replace?

Alison Craig,

You could import the tags from the original template (leaving overrides in
place if you use them). If the English is part of the stand definition in the
returned files (and not an override) that should work.

If no "clean template" for the book exists, I would create one to have ready

Re: [Framers] OT: Product Marketing Lingo

2022-05-11 Thread Craig Ede
It would seem that in a product name you want to have the fundamental
descriptive stuff first (i.e. what is it, including adjectives). In that way
you are pointing out the valuable part of the product (it is an Audio
Analyzer). The MX100, while critically defining the product, can follow that,
since you have to have dug into a variety of audio analyzers to even begin to
recognize that the MX100 is what you need over the competition’s GSP10xP model.
With translation now often a part of manuals, the issue of sequence in product
names and alphanumeric designations depends on where a language places the
adjectives in relationship to a noun. So much effort is put into product naming
that there must be an article discussing the intersection of both these issues
(product recognition and product name element sequence in translation).

Interesting question.

Hi All

Just a subtle point, we are discussing the proper way to present our product
names/identifiers. For example, say we make audio analyzers with various model
numbers and product trade names. Are there any incorrect ways to organize these
terms:

The MX100 Audio Analyzer is...

The marketing lady thinks the correct way to present that is

The Audio Analyzer MX100 is...

I think this comes from when we have a trade name, such as AudioMax™.

The AudioMax MX1000 Audio Analyzer is...

I contend that Audio Analyzer MX100 is incorrect, but cannot articulate the
technical reason why. Something like, MX100 modifies audio analyzer, right?

Subject: [Framers] TOC issue

OK,

Me again, but I have done everything that I can think of doing to solve this
issue BEFORE I posted and I am at a loss. I have a book for which I am
generating a TOC. I have selected the necessary paragraph tags for the TOC
and generated. All the entries in the TOC are functioning as hyperlinks as
they should with the exception of 5 specific entries. They are deader than a
door nail. The first TOC entry above this set of five entries is an active
hyperlink and the first TOC entry below this group of 5 is also an active
hyperlink.

I have done the following:

1. Deleted this specific text in the book and re-entered it.
2. Confirmed that there is no override to any of these tags - the text
is EquationCaption w/out any overrides (No asterisk is showing for them.)
3. Turned on all conditional text settings and generated the book to
check and see if there was something buried in the hidden text that was
causing the issue, but even w/ all the conditions turned on, I still have
the issue.
4. Added the same kind of tag (an Equation Caption) directly above and
directly below the section of five that are giving me fits and regenerated
and the tag above and below are indeed hyperlinks but these 5 remain
stubbornly dead.
5. All the equations are PDFs in this book, so I assumed that maybe
there was a graphic issue, so I deleted the five relevant graphics and
regenerated and again, the links are still dead.

I am at a loss at this point. It is just this one small section in an
otherwise large and graphic-laden manual, so there's nothing common about
this issue that I can compare to other sections in this book as no other
sections are giving me this problem.

I would welcome any and all suggestions, insight, etc.

Regards,

TVB

Re: [Framers] activation dialog for old Adobe software

2021-11-13 Thread Craig Ede
Good point, Robert! We may need a bill of rights regarding software that
mandates things like this. Support is one thing, but access to the software
once you paid for it should be mandatory (even through reinstalls on new
machines when the old one cracks).

Back in the early 90’s Photoshop was constantly probing our company network to
make sure that such-and-such a license was not being used more than once. If
they can do that, they can figure out when your license is not running anywhere
and give you an installation package that will give you back your software in a
usable state. After all, their installation package is the gold standard for
what constitutes an installation.

Re: [Framers] activation dialog for old Adobe software

2021-11-11 Thread Craig Ede
My experience has been that older versions of TCS will run using the version of
Acrobat that came with them. And any version of FrameMaker should have it's own
version of the headless Acrobat that allows it to produce PDFs. Of course, this
means that what every 'older' version is being use will have whatever security
problems that have been fixed in the newer versions.

Acrobat 8? You can't reactivate that any more. The activation servers have
been shut off because they couldn't be kept running anymore, and the
software won't work on new hardware/software.

If you need to create PDFs, forms, have shared reviews, etc., you'll either
have to subscribe to Acrobat or find another product.

I would open and save the jpg in a number of graphics programs and see if one
of them saves the jpg in a way that allows it to be imported. I've never had
trouble importing jpgs in FrameMaker in 5.5.6 unless there was actually
something wrong with the file (and I worked with that version a very long
time). If it's failing with all jpgs, it's possible that something in your

Re: [Framers] Table Conversion with Formats

2021-09-04 Thread Craig Ede
Karen,

The short answer to your question is no. However, when doing the convert to
table process you are able to choose a table format to use as the target format
for the new table. Be aware that the table format only allows you to choose one
para format to apply to all the non-heading table rows, so you should design a
table format that defines the first regular table row in a way that most of
your table cells will require. The others will have to be reformatted. You can
do this by column by selecting an entire column (minus the heading cell(s)) and
applying the needed table cell format.

BTW: Retaining the original para formats would, presumably, give you table
cells with multiple tabs in them, which wouldn’t make much sense in the single
cell context.

Can FM be made to convert to table keeping all paragraph formats intact?
Thanks,
Karen

Good luck,

Craig

I have a few superscript and a lot of subscript markings in my book.

The markings are especially annoying, particularly in tables, as they don't
leave enough space above the superscript so the table line above it so it looks
crammed into the space. And Frame rearranges the leading for both so there's
too much space between the lines - it almost looks like I have 1-1/2 line
spacing.

I'd like to make the super and subscript markings a little lower and higher,
respectively, so they are noticeable, but don't muck with table spacing or
leading.

Is there any place in Frame to control these options?

Yes, Wendy it goes this way:
Setting "Keep Footnote with Anchor" on Footnote Properties just does what You

It's not a memory size issue with the VM, as upping it from 4 GB to 16 GB
didn't affect the loading speed.

Tomorrow I'll try relocating the JPEGs to a folder local to the Windows VM.

Craig

From: Framers on

Won't help with the definition of cross-reference formats, but in
running text, you can apply two character formats easily in a structured
document--one element inside another, each applying character
properties. Both element tags survive.

Re: [Framers] A bizarre cross-reference issue

2021-04-23 Thread Craig Ede
Rick’s suggestion highlights one of the pitfalls of FrameMaker’s tagging
system. If you overlay a character tag with another character tag, you may get
a mix of characteristics in the text depending on the settings for each of the
character tags. Anything left “As Is” in the second applied tag will retain the
earlier tag’s setting (if it differs from the paragraph settings). However, if
you search on the first char tag name, FM will not find it in any text where
another char tag has overlaid it, so you lost the ability to search effectively
for a tag. You’re then stuck with modifying such text by doing a search for
character tag overrides.

Much better to foresee what combinations of characteristics might occur and
create separate ‘combo tags’ that do all the things you might want done to the
text. Just remember to have a template usage guide that gives your writers this
info so that they don’t subvert the intent by just overlaying two tags.

Craig

From: Framers on
behalf of r...@rickquatro.com
Instead of applying two character formats, I would suggest that you make a
single character format called SuperscriptLink (or something like that) that
has both the superscript position and your link color. This should be more
reliable than applying two separate character formats to the number.

Adobe Captivate? If you get the Technical Communications Suite, it's part of
it. Or you can buy a separate subscription. I don't know if the current version
will work with FM 12, though. That's 4 versions back and there is no legal way

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-26 Thread Craig Ede
This brings up and interesting question. When the subscription pushes out a new
version, can you leave an earlier FrameMaker version on a machine and use that
for files that you want to stay in that version?

The medical device industry can be quite hidebound about using newer versions
of software since they validate their quality systems against a particular
version and don't want to do all that work again. For a consultant, working
with different clients who may have different version requirements, the ability
to run multiple versions is imperative.

In 2015 I used Creative Cloud and the Adobe subscription let us install the new
versions but keep the older versions of particular software active, too.

Craig

From: Framers on
behalf of Lin Sims

As to an earlier email of yours, there is no difference between someone
upgrading from an earlier version to 2020 or someone getting a new
subscription to 2020. The subscription price is the same for everyone.
There are two annual options (no monthly option for FM!): one is to prepay
for a year (about $360), the other is to pay monthly ($29.99) for a year's
subscription (which totals about $360) with cancellation fees if you cancel
it early.

Nothing happens. You bought a perpetual license for FM12 and it will

FM documentation disappears every now and then from the Adobe site. Hence I
collect
items since years and offer them at
https://www.daube.ch/docu/fm-documentation/
For example:

Re: [Framers] FM on Next - question from a nostalgic person

2020-06-15 Thread Craig Ede
There is a copy of FM4 Windows (sealed in the box) on ebay for $15.99 (or best
offer); I'd offer them $5.
Also, there is a copy of The Frame Handbook by Linda Branagan (circa 1994) for
less than $11 w/free shipping.

I have seen the Branagan book in some college libraries. My recollection is
that is slanted to UNIX.

Re: [Framers] FM on Next - question from a nostalgic person

2020-06-15 Thread Craig Ede
Since NeXTSTEP OS was based on UNIX, I think the Unix FM manual instructions
probably cover most of the functioning of the FM program.

One thing to watch out for in such an old version of FrameMaker is the 'grey
box' problem that used to crop up where graphics would suddenly become grey
boxes. That problem gave us all fits back then in the early 90s This can be
solved by increasing the temp space allocated to the user. Something would max
out the temp space, and BOOM, grey boxes.

Good luck. FM5 is pretty close in features. You can look at the feature set
difference between the two versions and that will tell you what to ignore in
the manual. I do have a set of those manuals in English, but they are a couple
of hundred miles away at this time.

[Framers] Hallucinating Re: Script/ to sort files in a FrameMaker book file?

2020-05-21 Thread Craig Ede
Well, I must have been hallucinating because in the copy of FM10 I happen to
have on this computer, adding a selected group of files results in a reverse
numerical order adding of the files no matter how you select them in the Add
Files to Book dialog.
Ex. Files are added in this order: Test4-fm, Test3.fm, Test2.fm, Test1.fm no
matter the order of selection.
That seems really arbitrary to me.

My (recalled) experience is that the order in which you select the files to add
them to the book affects the order in which they appear. (I think this is a
Windows thing). The one anomaly is (again, as I recall) that the first file
selected ends up being the last added to the book, whereas the rest are added

Hope I'm not hallucinating! I'll go try a test now.

We create our book files by dragging "bunches" of files from Windows

method to sort the files in the FrameMaker book file in the right order.

The chapters have names like "100_spareparts.fm", "102_spareparts.fm",
"204_spareparts.fm" and being able to sort by numbers/alphabetically
would be a great bonus.

Is it possible to write script helping to do these tasks or is there
already a feature/plugin which can help?

Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] FrameMaker 11 - blank pages appearing at the end of imported file

2020-04-17 Thread Craig Ede
Very true, Dan. So the quick way to delete all extra elements (like empty
graphic tool text boxes) AND altered master pages is to click in the margin of
the page, select all on the blank body page and then delete everything. Then
View>Master page, then back to the body page via View>Body Page, then from the
Page Layout Warning window select Remove Overrides. This will ensure you have a
standard Master Page with the given name.
Craig

...snip...

Additionally, even if a page has a default master page applied, if it has had
the main text flow dimensions altered in any way, e.g., previously dragging it
slightly long to allow a cumbersome footnote or other element, that will
prevent the page from being autodeleted. Technically, I suppose it is then no
longer using a default master page, but it's easy to miss that simply changing
an aspect of the text flow would cause the master page to no longer be
considered default when you didn't consciously change the applied master page.

Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] FrameMaker 11 - blank pages appearing at the end of imported file

2020-04-16 Thread Craig Ede
More often than not I have found that page deletion is prevented by an empty
text box (not a text flow) that was accidentally created on the page that won't
delete.

Usually this is a result of someone using the graphic text tool and clicking on
the page, not entering text and then clicking off leaving an empty text entry
box. By clicking on the margin of the page and then doing a Select All
(Cntl-A), the text box will show up as a selected item along with all other
objects on the page (usually just the text flow from the master page). Often
times there are many of such empty text boxes indicating that somebody was
twitchy with the text entry tool. Just deselect the pages main text flow and
hit delete to remove them.

[Framers] FrameMaker User Groups WAS: Framers Digest, Vol 169, Issue 8

2020-04-09 Thread Craig Ede
I remember giving a presentation on auto-numbering paragraphs (including
different head levels, figures, tables, etc. in a single numbering system) to
one of these User Groups at Medtronic in Minneapolis back in the 90s. That
group had folks from the airline as well as medical device industries as well
as others.

Rolling along partway into the presentation I had someone from a rather
substantial audience say "Wait a minute!" and then point out an error in my
method. I turned around to look at the huge screen behind me and realized she
was right. I was stunned, frozen in the glare of the screen, recognizing that
my method was not going to work properly. A presenter's nightmare.

After a few moments (that seemed very long moments) I turned back to the
audience and said. "You're right. Let's fix this." I then did a revamping of
the method right there in front of the audience, highlighting the errors and
explaining the corrections. All that took place without a blip and the newly
defined method worked like a charm. The Adobe rep who was in the audience later
congratulated me on getting out of a pretty tough spot by giving the audience a
hand's on troubleshooting session that highlighted many important aspects of
how auto-numbering works (and how it doesn't). That day I lost my fear of
screwing up in front of an audience.

There may be a few Twin-Citians out there who recall this. If so, don't
publicly burst my bubble if your recollection is different. Still, I trust the
impression of that Adobe rep.

Re: [Framers] Nostalgia - was Re: FrameMaker 2015

Nostalgia can cause trouble. I recently was in an interview with a
multinational Health Care company in the Milwaukee/Waukesha area and referred
to 'tagging' paragraphs in unstructured FrameMaker. The interviewer was
nonplussed and corrected me, saying unstructured FrameMaker was not like XML.
Well, it isn't. But tagging was how the process was described. But I believe he
saw that use of the terminology as a slip in my understanding of the two faces
of FrameMaker, unstructured and structured, both of which had importance for
this particular job.

Didn't get that contract. Probable a multiplicity of factors, but this tagging
thing didn't help.

My personal purchased Windows from 1992 was for Windows and on disks.

Re: [Framers] Best way to import/add select paragraph formats?

2020-03-26 Thread Craig Ede
I use a clean template approach for doing such imports, making sure there is no
chance that I am importing something else even if I select the wrong options.

Note: A truly 'clean' template would removed all formatting definitions in the
template and not just char, para, table, master page and reference page
definitions (i.e. Colors, Doc Properties, X-Ref definitions, etc.). Having
such a template archived for use under these circumstances is something every
FrameMaker template designer should do. I would bet Rick has one stashed away
somewhere. It's amazing to me that Adobe doesn't provide a template barren of
formats to use for this purpose.

1 - Create a 'clean' template for this purpose. That means, delete all char and
para formats. Delete all text boxes from the master pages. If using a single
sided document, make sure to set it to double-sided temporarily so you can
delete the text boxes on the Left master page. Delete all Reference pages.
Delete all table formats since table formats contain default para formats as
part of the table definition. A Create and Apply Formats should only result in
the creation of the Body tag which will exist in the text box override on the
Body page. If others appear you will have to seek them out and remove them.
Delete the Body paratag from the catalog again.

2 - Create the char and para formats you want to import, designed as you want.
To create them you need a paragraph on the Body page. Use that Body paragraph
(which should now appear as an override) as the place to start creating your
new tags. Only the new paratags and chartags should exist on the body page.
Another Create and Apply formats should not create any extraneous paratags or
chartags.

3 - Import just your new char and para formats across your files or books from
the clean template file you created, selecting Paragraph Formats and Character
Formats only. You can also check the While Updating Remove: Other Format/Layout
Overrides if you want the new definitions to correct overrides of the your new
Para and Char formats that might exist in the target files.

I am a fan of an approach that separates content development from web
design. A writer/editor develops content and a web designer designs the web
pages, css, etc. In my opinion, these are two vastly different skill sets.
Sure, some can do both, but designing responsive sites that will work with
desktops, tablets, and phones takes a deeper level of skill than just
learning a tool like Flare or FrameMaker.

Sadly, IMHO, not enough attention is given to the quality of content on most
Web sites today. That is the part of Web design that you will excel at, Ken,
because you are a tech writer. I firmly believe that good Web design must
start with usability and audience consideration to develop the content. Once
you figure out all of that for the Web site, then you can focus on coding it
in Flare. Work one piece of the challenge at a time.

Very true!

There are at least a couple of advantages of Create and Apply Formats in
some cases:

1) When there are lots of untagged overrides, C&A F gives you a starting
point for distinguishing formats that have overrides from those that don't
2) When the overrides fall into distinct groups, C&A F let's you
distinguish the groups without having to inspect them one at a time.

Re: [Framers] OT: Word to XML

2019-07-22 Thread Craig Ede
Rather than using the 'create and apply formats' feature, I'd use the 'find
paragraph override'; and 'find character overrides' search functions to find
anywhere where the tags are overridden with some other formatting. Mostly these
will be nothing meaningful, and then you can set these ranges to the default
format desired, easily done since they are highlighted by the search action.
This should allow you to get rid of the overrides that would create the
numbered formats that Lynn describes and gives you the chance to standardize
all your formats to those you've defined as desirable.

Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 159, Issue 11

2019-06-20 Thread Craig Ede
The advice from Robert that unwanted formats can also lurk on Reference pages
is also true. Delete any reference pages that are not used and search for
unwanted formats in the ones you retain.

His advice about the book file is also true. Save the book as MIF and search
for the offending format, then delete the appropriate code segment(s) from the
MIF text, and resave back to a standard book file. If an unwanted format shows
up again on a regenerate, that format is hiding somewhere in the files.

Cleaning the reference and master pages (by making the 'hidden' master page in
a single sided document blank) can be done on one file and imported across all
files in the book that use the same reference and master page(s). However,
additional 'extra' reference and master pages added to a particular file will
remain in existence. To get rid of these (assuming they are not needed), one
can cut the text from a file and paste it into a pristine template chapter file
of the type being used in the document. Applying all formats would seem like a
good idea after doing that.

Really well made templates have all the required stuff in the original template
(and leave out the undesirable stuff like a 'hidden' Left master page that is
not blank in the case of a single sided document) , so you can use the original
'raw' template from which the book was constructed to cut and paste into,
knowing that it has only what you want.

This assumes everyone has a repository of templates used by the various types
of book produced. I certainly advocate that.

Re: [Framers] Mystery Tags in HTML Mapping Table

2019-06-18 Thread Craig Ede
These are two places I know formats can hide:

Check for them in the default table formats by putting inserting a table of
each type. If it shows up in one of those, redefine the para where it is used
to one of your defined formats and resave the new table as the default table
format of that name.

If you have a document that does not uses facing pages (sensible for HTML
output), set the document to use L&R master pages. You may find the offending
paragraph used on "unused" master page. Delete everything of that master page
and then set you document back to use only the defined master page (I believe
this will be the 'Right' master page.

Re: [Framers] Resources for getting up and running in Frame

2019-05-28 Thread Craig Ede
I have to agree with this. It is still possible to print out the entire manual
from the pdf. I remember the FrameMaker 5.5 manual (which came with the product
as a hardcopy) as being exceptionally good, but with all the changes since
then, the new PDF is the better place to go. There has been a tendency to
piecemeal things out, losing some of the global concerns that really ought to
drive how one uses FrameMaker. I think that is an effect of DITA parsing, but I
believe enough high level stuff is still covered to offset that.

Way back in 1995, I had to learn Frame by the seat of my pants. I
literally read the ENTIRE user manual (the one that came in the box
with the discs) from cover to cover. I had been a WordPerfect user
and it was an adjustment to wrap my head around the concept of
needing a "frame" in which to enter all content, text or otherwise. I
don't think that Frame is one of those pieces of software that you
can learn to be good at simply by mucking around in it (which is
pretty much how I've learned most other software). You really need a
structured framework in which to learn it, either a course or a book.

Re: [Framers] Create a separate ToC for each text flow?

2019-05-17 Thread Craig Ede
Yves,

I was thinking of something similar to what Lin describes, but I don't have
time to check it and didn't want to lead you down a wrong path. However, once
you create the TOC file as an autogenerated file, it might be possible to
create the two text flows in that file, one for each language. The page flows
and formatting tags on the reference page for the TOC would have to be divided
as well with the correct tags to use for formatting on the appropriate side.
All the flow names have to be named the same for each of the 'views' (that is,
on both the TOC reference and master pages). I don't know for sure, but it just
might work, and that would let you just generate the file, no muss, no fuss.

Good luck.

Could you use two different paragraph tags for each heading level, one for
Dutch and one for French? Perhaps distinguished by -D and -Fr. Then you
could generate separate TOCs easily enough from the same file, but off the
top of my head I can't figure out how to combine the two different TOCs
into the same generated file.

Oh! Could you create a second file that has two separate text frames as
parallel columns, then use insets to have the French TOC in one column and
the Dutch in the other? Then all you'd have to do is exclude the generated
files from the doc when creating your output ...

(NB: I have not tested this. No idea if it would work. But it sounds
possible.)

Re: [Framers] Hypertext Named Destinations in HTML5

2018-12-19 Thread Craig Ede
No doubt those notes will go into the 'style guide' that you maintain for those
who come to your position in the future.

Experience tells me that such 'style guides' (I call them Template User Guides)
will be ignored by those who follow you, but one must be hopeful (and
professional) about these things.

Even such things as using a fresh (i.e.'clean' version of the template) stored
in a repository are not done, with new docs made from old docs that may have
been subjected to all kinds of abuse (template-wise). Cutting and pasting
re-used content to a fresh template and then updating all formats, removing
overrides is the best way to go for almost any FM document.

Happy Holidays!!

I agree. But the values to pair those properties with are an open question
(though trial and error might suss it out). The value use for v6-11 changes in
this fashion:
11,12,13,16,21,23

At a guess I'd start with 25 for FM12 and 27 for FM13 and see if that works.

If Adobe maintains its pattern, then saving to FM12 would use
Constants.FV_SaveFmtBinary120 and FM13 would be
Constants.FV_SaveFmtBinary130.

Re: [Framers] FM 11 / FM 14 compatibility property names for the various binary doc types that start with

2018-11-30 Thread Craig Ede
I just looked this up in the pdf at
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/pdfs/framemaker_scripting.pdf

There are a number of Properties listed that start with
Constants.FV_SaveFmtBinary60 (for FM6) and go to Constants.FV_SaveFmtBinary110
(for FM11). The value used with each of these properties changes as listed in
the table (pp121-122) and that results in saving a binary file of that version.
I expect there are also values Constants.FV_SaveFmtBinary for the newer version
that have not yet made it into this Aug. 2018 release of the documentation.

Not true, as Rick and Lin's postings indicate. Extendscript allows saving to a
number of previous formats. Extendscript only functions in versions FM10 and
up, but, if memory serves (a big caveat), you can save back to at least v7.1.
Of course, the use of any new features will be lost when doing that, so use the
same template as the folks using your previous version to avoid that.

FrameMaker only allows doing a save as to one previous version (R-1).
Example: If using FM 14, the files can only be saved as to the FM 13
version.

2018-11-30 Thread Craig Ede
Not true, as Rick and Lin's postings indicate. Extendscript allows saving to a
number of previous formats. Extendscript only functions in versions FM10 and
up, but, if memory serves (a big caveat), you can save back to at least v7.1.
Of course, the use of any new features will be lost when doing that, so use the
same template as the folks using your previous version to avoid that.

FrameMaker only allows doing a save as to one previous version (R-1).
Example: If using FM 14, the files can only be saved as to the FM 13
version.

As of last Wednesday, I am now retired, courtesy of a sudden but not
entirely unexpected lay off from the TMX Group (basically the Toronto
Stock Exchange) where I've been for the last seventeen years. This will
likely end any further use of FrameMaker on my part, as I won't be
looking for full-time work again.

I'd like to thank everyone on this list and in the Frame community for
their help over the years. This list has been a great resource and I
hope I've been able to pay some of it back.

I really hate smart text selection. It always grabs stuff I don't want,
such as the word before a punctuation mark when all I want is the
punctuation mark. Or the punctuation mark after a word when what I want is
the word.

How in hell do I get rid of this?

Re: [Framers] Print settings for colors is inconsistent

We ran into that a lot with beginning with FM8. As you say, it seems to be
related to colors brought in by graphics.

Color8 or Color9? Yeah, even though I rarely (if ever) mess with the color
definitions, I almost always have at least one file where Color8 or Color9
becomes "inconsistent".I have even handedited MIF files to remove the color
completely, and it shows back up. It seems to have to do with imported
graphics. As near as I can tell, FM creates new color definitions if you
import a graphic that has colors that aren't already defined in the
document. So if the same graphic isn't in all of the files in a document,
you wind up with inconsistent colors.

Re: [Framers] Print settings for colors is inconsistent

2018-08-30 Thread Craig Ede
If the color is not used you can delete the offending color(s) without a
warning message. That will remove the error.

My dim recollection is that FM seems to use one file (maybe the book file) as
the source for known colors. Additional colors that occur in the other files
can cause this problem. If you have a template file with known good colors,
import the colors from that file across you book, too.

Hi,

when I update a book, or try to print it, I receive a message that the
print settings for all sorts of colors is inconsistent.

This occurs both with Frame 2017 and when I opened the files in Frame 2019.

I tried a few times to open one file and then do
import formats/color definitions from that file to all other files in the
book so they would have the same settings, but I still receive this message.

Are there any ideas about how to resolve this issue?

I did not create these colors myself, and we do not use them in particular.

Re: [Framers] Line spacing

That setting I was groping for would be 'fixed' (as previously noted by a host
of others).

But seriously consider setting the line spacing to a higher one that the
defaults and that will not only solve your problem but make your text read
easier.

I don't have FM on this machine so I can look, but here is a setting that sets
the spacing to a fixed value. This precludes lines with the super and subs from
altering the line spacing (which a typographer would also prefer).

Three basic approaches:

  1. Don't use superscripts or subscripts.
  2. Increase the minimum line spacing (leading) for the paragraph style so
that the raised/lowered characters have enough room.
  3. Turn off automatic line spacing for the paragraph (or for its style) so
that the spacing doesn't expand and learn to live with collisions between the
raised/lowered characters and adjacent lines.

If you choose the third approach, you can also spend (or waste...) some time
futzing with the size and/or position characteristics for subscript and
superscript to minimize the collisions at the cost of making the
super/subscripted characters harder to read.

Subject: [Framers] Angle Brackets in Structured XML

Hi All,

I've built a very simple structured application so that native XML user content
can be shared/created between various groups.

The angle bracket is used quite a bit as a printable character. We were going
along well using HTML coding "<" and ">"

When I save an XML file, all ">" is changed to ">" so is it possible for
FrameMaker to keep the original text, or what is the standard solution for
this? The dev team wants to target both HTML and XML for their content and do
not want to maintain two different ways of using angle brackets.

Thanks C2

Re: [Framers] My Structured App Not Showing

2018-06-29 Thread Craig Ede
cuctu,

That difference in the number of structured apps you are seeing may be due to
the fact that there are two locations that store the stuctured app information.
One is the for the local user. The path depends on the version of FM. On one
of my installations (an FM13 installation) that path is:

C:\Users\Craig2\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\13\structapps.fm

The more general structapps.fm is at:

C:\Programs(x86)\AdobeFrameMaker2015\Structure\structapps.fm

As I recall the one that is read on startup (at least around FM10) was the
general one. I think they fixed this in later versions so that it always reads
and writes to the local copy by default.

Also as Rick mentioned, after you add and structured app to structapps.fm you
have to read the file in again for it to take effect.

Two good points made in the last couple of emails on this topic:

Adobe charges too much for FM upgrades.

July would be the logical time to expect a new release.

Adobe could surprise us all with an upgrade price that is reasonable for a
change.

Craig

BTW: If I had to pick and old version of FM that was the easiest and most
productive to use, I'd pick the UNIX (Solaris) version of FM7. Unfortunately,
there aren't many SUN machines out there anymore, so I have to view that
feeling as simple nostalgia and just accept the improvements that have been
made to the product despite having to run it under Window.

Hi Pat,

My ArchiveES program will take a book and archive all of the FrameMaker files
into a single folder, and the graphics into a Graphics subfolder at the
archived book's folder. Any text insets will be put in a TextInsets subfolder.
It updates all of the internal links for the new locations of the graphics and
text insets.

In your scenario, you would want to let ArchiveES actually copy the FrameMaker

Subject: [Framers] Pull imported graphics into one folder

Hi -

I need to consolidate several manuals, each of which has many imported graphics
that are in a folder in the manual's folder. Once I've brought all the
non-image material together into a folder, is there a way to copy images from
their original location into the new folder? I had hopes Package might do it
but it skips graphics that aren't already in the folder.

The images still display in the new combined manual but our directories are
rather messy, with people tending to rename folders and I have no faith that
those links will remain valid indefinitely.

I've already been shot down on using copied instead of imported images because
there is a lot of consolidation to be done, so please don't suggest that.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm using FrameMaker 2017 on Windows 7.

It is not up to me, and it is not my system. But I have had a fair bit if

the most I currently have a valid Adobe product that I cannot activate
simultaneously with other Adobe software because the computer already has an
enterprise license. That is, I cannot have more than one activated license at a
time on the same machine. So when I want to use it, I have to deactivate the
enterprise license (log out of the cloud service) and not run the enterprise
software then log into my cloud service while I run the other software. Nuts. I
and our ICT people have been onto Adobe and met the corporate brick wall. We
have around 35000 users…

Seriously, I would look at GIMP. Free and open source, long pedigree, etc.

Re: [Framers] PDF Images are Pixelated when imported into FM11

2018-03-15 Thread Craig Ede
Maybe I missed this as I haven't been monitoring this thread that closely:

What is the source of your PDF (i.e. What program is being used to generate the
PDF)? It maybe be that your settings there are determining the preview quality
PDF upon import into FM.

Hi Fei Min,

you should use paragraph and chatracter formats for your elements. Use the
outputclass value to determine the format to use. Then change the formats in
your template as needed.

Re: [Framers] Getting rid of missing fonts

2018-01-24 Thread Craig Ede
You can use the Fonts pod to replace particular missing fonts with a font you
select. That way you don't have relics of an earlier era hanging around hidden
in a table format definition of para formats to use when creating a new table.

I think this is a cleaner way that simply relying on replace missing fonts. I
don't think replace missing fonts updates para tags for things like table
formats that are not currently being used.

Check your images and reference pages too - fonts can be lurking in there also

Subject: [Framers] Getting rid of missing fonts

I'm trying to do something that is seemingly simple...use the Remember Missing
Font Names preference to get rid of missing font messages.
Here's what I've done:
   - Launch Framemaker.
   - Select File > Preferences > General.
   - Deselect Remember Missing Font Names.
   - Open, save, and close the affected file.
The next time I open the file, the messages should be gone. However, the same
missing font message is displayed.
In the MIF file, I don't find any mention of the missing font. The List of
Fonts in one file doesn't list the font at all. And searching for the font
doesn't help.
What am I doing wrong? I know this is a perennial issue in FrameMaker.
