Missing graphics links

2010-09-03 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
  Hi Sue,

This answer is off the top of my head, so the details may not be
completely accurate!

When you first open the file and the dialog comes up asking for the
graphic and directory, toward the top of the dialog it tells you the
filename it is looking for. Browse in your moved/copied folder to look
for that graphic. Have the "update to use this path" radio button
checked and you should be ok.

Hope this helps.

Don.

Hi,

I'm using Frame 7.2 on Windows XP

I recently copied the main folder with the Frame files and the graphics folders
- all together - into a new folder and changed the name on the new folder.

I'm now working for a retail store chain.

When I open the Frame files in the new folder, it comes up with missing
graphics. I thought as long as I copied all of the original files and graphics
together at the same time, this problem would be avoided.

Since I am now making another version of the same book - nearly the same info -
I have also changed the name of the file in the new folder.

(I'll want to ask about Conditional text later.)

I read the section in the Frame 7 Reference book (ya know, the big book).

Now, how to reconnect the graphics?

It seems I should click on "update to new path" - but I'm not sure what file
name goes into which box.

I know, this should be done with blinders on, but -- oh well, any advice will
be appreciated.

Thanks,

Finding OLE Objects

2010-08-26 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
Hi Richard,

Thanks for the info... Right, LOR... that's what I was thinking when I
typed LOF... I hadn't thought of using the LOR that way before, but it's
a good idea.

In my initial look, I found some graphics that appeared to have been
made with the graphic tools, but I don't think those would be OLEs...
perhaps they were made elsewhere and copied into the doc. I'll keep
investigating.

Thanks,
Don

FM 9 or 8 has nothing to do with it. In 7.2, if I import an OLE object linked to file and select Edit > Links, it's listed. If the Links dialog doesn't show anything, that means whoever imported the OLE objects simply embedded them in the doc instead of linking to a file. A really, really bad idea, IMHO.

LOF won't help -- you simply define which paragraphs it includes. What can help is a List of References. Select Imported Graphics to include. Then use the LOR as a graphic eliminator as you page through the book. When you get to a graphic that's not listed in the LOR, it's either an embedded graphic or an OLE object.

HTH!

When I encountered a similar message, the problem had to do with the
"A" flow present in text frames on the reference page(s) of the
documents being compared (which is of no practical significance and

Try locating such text frames in Reference pages and modify accordingly.

Creating Graphic Buttons

2010-01-11 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
Hi Bill,

I also got a call from Rick Quatro explaining this method. Thanks to
both of you for your assistance.

I put the graphic in an anchored frame with a text box over it which
contains the hypertext marker. Works fine!

Next step is to make navigation from one PDF back to the previous one
work. When I use the Open Document as New hypertext marker, the
button/link doesn't work. But the Open Document hypertext marker is
fine, but when clicking on it, the new pdf opens in the same window.
This is not a huge problem as I could put a link back to the original
doc in the second one, or the user could use the previous view button in
the reader but mine was turned off by default

Thanks,
Don.

I would like to be able to link to another Frame document by using a

Is there a way to do this?

Source Control for Frame

2008-12-09 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
Hi Gillian,

Other than the diff report (which I assume provides more details than
just a time/date stamp) is SVN useful?

I've been wanting some centralized document management for our
FrameMaker (and other) files for a long time. We have several folks that
author materials, sometimes in teams. I'd like to have check in/check
out and versioning at the very least. It would be really cool to be able
to metatag content and search for it also.

Folks have mentioned going to MIF files or XML. Wouldn't those options
add steps to the workflow? I assume they (MIF or XML) would affect the
workflow in a similar fashion. Also, going to XML would require
structure (I assume) so I don't think we're ready for that. We've
started to use structure in some docs, but I haven't had time to
implement that broadly.

What is PDM?

Thanks,
don.

URL Encoded Problem in PDF

2006-09-13 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
Hi Gang,

I've got a link to a url that is being encoded by Acrobat, and not
working when I click on it.

For example, the marker has "message URL
http://www.site.com/~directory/index.html"; and the tilde is being
encoded to %7E when the link is clicked, but appears as "~" in the PDF.
If I manually paste the link (with ~ intact) it works fine.

Any ideas? Is this a problem with my PDF or the target webserver?

Thanks,
Don.

Hypertext Link Strangeness

2006-05-23 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
Hi All,

I've got one for you I am making hypertext links active in the PDF
output by using a "message URL" hypertext marker. I use a character tag
to identify the text to include in the link. This has worked fine for me
in the past in unstructured docs.

I have recently noticed that in my structured doc the link is not
working the way I expect. In some cases I get only a part of the address
in the link or no active link at all.

Could this be related to 7.2 or the fact that I am using a structured
doc? Do I need to define an element for the link?

Thanks,
Don.

FM 7.2 starts much slower than 7.1

2006-05-19 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
Klaus,

My machine is similar in configuration to yours and Frame 7.2 loads in
about 10 seconds. (7.1 is no longer on this machine.)
In my case, "Fonts" also takes the longest time to load (about 7 seconds
for a couple hundred fonts).

Thanks,
Don.

Automate Outline Object

2006-05-18 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
In this project I am opening an XML file using an application with XSLT
and r/w rules.

Is it possible to specify a border around a graphic object in the EDD,
or would this be a read/write rule?
Or is it just not possible?

I've been snooping around the Structured Dev Guide but haven't found
anything yet.

Thanks,
Don.

Structured Opened in Standard Frame

Hi All,

Just a quick confirmation when you open a structured Frame using the
unstructured Frame interface and you choose to "Edit" rather than "View
Only" the structure info is no longer there.

Is this a permanent thing? To recover the structured info do I have to
treat it like any other unstructured to structured conversion?

Thanks,

Hi All,

I think I'm forgetting something basic but I need your assistance.

I have a structured application.
I made an edit to the EDD... (added a ? to a general rule).

When I use the structured app, the new rule is not implemented.
If I manually import the element defs it is.

Q1. What did I forget to do to this structured app when updating my EDD?

I put it in the correct folder (c:\Program
Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2\strucure\xml\thisAppName).

Q2. Just to double check, though... how can I find out what is defined

MORE SPAM TO LIST MEMBERS

2006-02-23 Thread Donald M. Rinderknecht
Hi John,

I hate to see you go... I find this list PRICELESS in terms of the
assistance it has provided me in my FrameMaker tasks over the years.

Hey, if you've only gotten TWO spams this year, consider yourself way
ahead of the game! (I get about 200 per day it seems!)
This list is actually very clean in terms of SPAM.

I barely remember the message in question. I thought it was just a list
member offering services (which normally doesn't happen, btw).

Good Luck in your Frame endeavors.

Has anyone else tried opening it for you on another machine?

Thanks,

Best Approach to Structure

2005-12-05 Thread Donald M Rinderknecht
Dominick,

This is a tough one. Quickly is so relative, and structured documents
can be a little daunting.

I would start with some training or a book or both. Actually, that's
what I did.

I have found Kay Ethier's "XML and FrameMaker" very helpful. I have also
taken her Stuctured Frame Boot Camp. The boot camp is probably the best
way to implement your 'quickly' goal. Bring a project with you and she
will use it to help you understand the process.

By the way, I've taken training in strucutred from Lynne Price
(http://www.txstruct.com/) and Kay (http://www.travelthepath.com/) and
found them to be excellent trainers! (I've been in the training biz for
14 years so I know a good trainer when I see one!)

Thanks,
Don.

  What
is the best approach to learning how to structure Frame documents?  I
need to learn quickly how to create and implement EDDs into many and
varied, unstructured Frame documents.  Suggestions...links?
