Mif2Go Help?

2010-01-14 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Hi All,

I'm working with the demo version of Mif2Go so I can create a Word version of
my tech manuals (long story short: ancient customer demands Word for delivery).
I'm having some difficulty getting the output to look like my Frame files... it
doesn't help any that the magic huh? button doesn't seem to call up any of
the help files (can't display the web page).

So here's a general plea: tips? Tricks? Suggestions?

How can I get one Word (or RTF, I guess) file for the book as a whole instead
of one file per .fm file?

How can I get my graphics to show up at the right size?

???

I'm on Frame 7.1, windows platform. My company is going to buy licenses soon,
but I'm the lucky one who gets to play with the demo, learn how to make it
work, and then train my department. Except I'm stuck.

Thanks in advance; feel free to email me directly if it's too much clutter for
the list.

Cheers!

Nicole

Quick Access Bar Not Responding

2009-02-11 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Hi,

I've got two writers with the same unique problem. They've both had
FrameMaker 7.1 installed on Windows XP machines. Neither of them can
rotate the quick access tool bar by hitting the blue up/down arrows or
by choosing next/previous from the center button. Any ideas before I
call our help desk for a re-install?

Okay to reply to me directly... I get the list on digest normally.

Total Page Count on Title Page

2008-09-15 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Hi all,

My manager requested that I add a total page count on the title page for
a book and I'm running into a hitch. FM help file shows a way to do this
with consecutive numbering for each chapter, but we use modified
MIL-Spec here - i.e., each page number consists of a chapter and the
page number, and restarts for each chapter. Any suggestions? I'm using
Frame 7.1 if that matters.

Total Page Count on Title Page

2008-09-15 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Hi David,

Tried that - it only reflects a page count for that individual file, not
for the entire book.

Nicole,

I haven't done it, but, according to the book, the Page Count variable
(<$lastpagenum>), without the parens, should work.

Try putting that in your footer, or wherever on the cover, and see what
it gives you.

You should be able to put it anywhere, except on a Master Page.

Nope. Nicole said this is a folio-numbered book (chapter-page). If by
Page building block, you mean <$pagenum>, that will just give you the
number of the last page in the last file -- "4" if it's a 4-page index.
If you're thinking of an xref format named Page, in a folio-numbered
book that's probably defined as <$chapnum>-<$pagenum> -- maybe "IX-4"
for that index.

For a quick solution, David's idea of adding it in Acrobat will work.
Or, heck, use Acrobat to determine the page count, then add it in FM and
re-PDF.

A longer-term, more extensible solution probably involves a script or
plugin. In fact, I vaguely recall there being a FrameScript script to do
this, but don't have time to track it down at the moment.

Here a shortcut for the PDF if you have Acrobat Professional. In FM put
some placeholder text on the cover such as Page count: 999. Open the PDF
in Professional, select Tools \ Advanced Editing \ Touchup Text Tool,
and change 999 to the correct page count. Sometimes there are problems
with fonts, but its worth a shot.

FrameMaker Index of Referenced Graphics

2008-03-19 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Hi,

Back in January, Mr. Combs offered the following great solution to creating a
list of referenced graphics in a document.

Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2008 08:34:14 -0700

From: Combs, Richard [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: RE: List of linked graphic file locations

Nope, if they're really _linked_ (imported by reference), it's a piece of cake.
From the book window, with the last file in the book selected, select Add
Index of References. In the Set Up dialog box, move Imported Graphics to the
Include References box. Click Add. Voila! At the end of your book, FM adds an
alphabetical index of referenced graphics. Each entry shows the complete path
and file name.

HTH!

Richard

I was wondering if anyone has a QD solution that would create not an
alphabetical list, but a list in order by page number. Here’s my code from the
Reference Pages:

1, 2–3

$symbols$numerics$alphabetics

-‑–—

Level1IOR

openObjectId $relfilename:$ObjectType $ObjectId

$autorange$chapnum‑$pagenum

I’ve been tinkering around with this all morning and can’t figure out how to
bend it to my will. Any suggestions?

FrameMaker 7.1 unstructured, Windoze XP Pro.

Thanks in advance,

Nicole

If you set your table up with header rows they should automatically
repeat. If you have a table that doesn't do this, try going to Table

When you insert a table, make sure you have at least one Heading Row.

I've never heard that before and wonder how true it is.

Indexes - a bit off topic

2006-09-27 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Hate to say it, but according to both Webster's New Collegiate
Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), "appendix" is
pluralized using either "-ices" or "-ixes," regardless of definition.
Popular usage and preference may dictate differently, but the English
language does not differentiate.

Another solution is to convert the Word Doc to PDF first. Then extract
each page with a graphic, crop and rotate as necessary, and save with

Page Number in Paragraph Style

2006-05-09 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole

Hi,

I'd like to set up a paragraph format to use for my footer that contains
the page number and my company's required document label. When I try to
use $pagenum (or $curpagenum, or if I paste in the $curpagenum
variable) in the autonumber format for the style, and place the footer
on the master page, I don't get the page number (just the text
$pagenum or #). Any tips?

Frame 7.1, Windoze.

Thanks!

Guy,

I know that folks will likely tell you that it's not the recommended
way,
but I have embedded Visio objects into a couple of FM books
successfully. I
learned about it from another list member (John, are you out there?),
and it
has been fine.

Other than that, the recommended procedure is clumsy at best: create a
PDF
from Visio, crop it, save as .eps, import into FM (think I'm remembering
that right). Ugly if you expect change to the Visio drawings as I did.

Crashing Books & Find/Change

2006-01-18 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Sorry for the potential duplication; first one didn't post.

Frame 7.1, Win XP Pro
?
Has anyone run into the issue of a book occasionally crashing after running a
find/change? ?Occasionally after completing I'll get a message telling me that
"FrameMaker has detected a serious problem and must quit", and then a message
that reads "The instruction at '0x00341469' referenced memory at '0x'.
The memory could not be 'read'." Clicking 'ok" closes it all out.
?
The FrameLog has a whole lot of information in it I don't understand; nothing
clearly pointing to a cause. I've run into this a few times; generally I'll
just re-start Frame and get back to what I was doing. ??
?
Any hints?

OT: IETM Research Help

2006-01-06 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Greetings!

I'm sorry to take up space on the list, but I really need some advice on where
to turn.

My management has tasked me with researching IETM (software and development).
Currently we're paper-based. I got my department to switch to FrameMaker from
Word last year for our technical manual production, so while I've gone through
as much training as is available via Adobe, I'm relatively new to the Frame
world. I'm even newer to the world of IETMs.

I have a slew of questions, but don't want to bother the list with an off
topic. Does anybody have any advice of where I can turn?

Thanks in advance-
Nicole
