Internal Error 6004 etc.
I renamed a folder containing a book to do testing. The links to the imported screen shots in the files of the book were broken (irrelevant to my purpose). But after several days of use the files with screen shots will not open. The error message begins Internal Error 6004, 4647374, 4646761, 4647060... This error message displays no matter if try update to use new path, skip this file, or ignore all missing files. No, no OLE graphics here. Nearly all screen shots are imported by reference, with the odd screen shot implanted in the file. I suspect some of your graphics are not being saved. I have seen that error a lot lately, especially since our IT dept installed XP SP3 on our machines. Do you use OLE for any of your graphics in your manuals? If so you may be dismayed to find they have likely all been blown away. Check the new files for gray boxes where graphics should be. I found that the first time I opened a document with OLE images, the images appeared fine when I first opened the file but if I tried to save the file, I got the graphics have not been saved error message and the alphanumeric extension on the file. The only solution to the problem was to eliminate all OLE graphics and replace them with images imported by reference. I can see that Run-in Head would be my solution if the FM files that I want to import were simpler. I made a 2pt pgf tag and used it. But how do I use the Bottom Margin setting to reduce the empty space further? The setting is 0.0 pt. I can increase the gap but I do not see how to reduce the gap. I tried a negative number, -10.0 pt, without effect. /\/\ Murray Stuart Rogers wrote: Murray Moore wrote: But the Description text inset, because it must have formatting, is a FrameMaker file. If you can change your Description text inset pgf tag so its pagination is Run-in Head, the blank will go away. If you can't change that tag for some reason, then you can't make the blank go away, but you can make it almost invisible. Before importing the inset, create and apply a pgf tag for the Description cells that specifies a font size of 2 pt, and then play with the Bottom Margin setting on the Table Cell tab of the pgf designer until you get the result you want. SOLVED Index Problems
My problems were: * A ghost text entry * Page numbers displaying under the Symbols heading, e.g. 8, 14, 22, 65, 68, 100 The ghost text entry disappeared in the course of deleting the page numbers. The cause of the superfluous page numbers was inconsistent styles of index markers. In my index, columns and buttons appear twice. Before I updated the index, the index markers were this style: button: name of button: name of window; button name: name of window To make these entries easier for me to read and edit in the tiny index marker window, I changed: button: name of button: name of window; button name: name of window to: button: name of button: name of window; button name: name of window The cause of the display of the orphan page numbers under Symbols is that I did not change every index entry. One style of marker was followed by the other style of marker, like this: button: name of button: name of window; button name: name of window button: name of button: name of window; button name: name of window Using Ctrl + Alt and click, I returned every index marker of this style: button: name of button: name of window; button name: name of window to this style: button: name of button: name of window; button name: name of window And FrameMaker was no longer confused. /\/\ Murray Mississauga ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

RE: Solution NOT SOLVED Phantom Index Entries
My problem, Richard, is that I do not have a fm index marker to edit. I call this entry in my book's index a ghost because its index marker text in Chapter 1 was changed a number of book index updates ago. The new version of that index entry displays in the index, too. When I look at that index marker in Chapter, I see only the revised text. The older version of that index entry text only is found in the mif version of Chapter 1. When the free-of-the-ghost mif version is saved as the fm version and a stand-alone index is generated (thanks, Roger Shuttleworth), that ghost is gone. But when the book then is updated, that ghost entry redisplays in my book's index. So the problem seems to occur during the updating of the book/regeneration of the index. In my index I have made the offending index entries conditional and hidden them. I didn't really understand the initial problem, but whatever it was, this isn't a solution -- or even an acceptable workaround. An index is a generated file. When you update your book, your conditionalized entries will be deleted and replaced with new, unconditionalized entries. To modify your index, you need to modify the index markers from which it's generated, not the generated output. I don't recall why you weren't able to find or edit the problematic marker text, but Art's suggestion of getting IXGen is a good one. Use it to generate an editable marker list, find and fix your problem entries in that list, and then reapply the list to your doc, replacing all the existing markers. HTH! Richard -- Richard G. Our IT Dept. head suggested I might have exceeded the maximum size for a FM file. I do not think so because I have produced thicker books. Were the source files perhaps originally created in MS word? We've seen such markers sourced in word as having a leading and trailing char 020 -- it's a non-printing char, but one that FM sees when the index is generated (and thus the entry under Symbols). About the only way to check (and fix) is to save the doc as MIF, search for the text of the affected markers, then check the MIF statements of each affected marker for numerical character values that don't belong. Delete them (careful not to break the structure of the MIF -- check to see what a good marker looks like if you're not sure), save the MIF doc, reload into FM to convert back to FM binary form (overwrite the original FM file), and regen your index. The problem should then be gone. Hope that helps. On page 34 I deleted and recreated the index marker. But when I updated the book and the index, 34 continues to display under Symbols. On page 34 I deleted the index marker. I updated the book and the index. Not only does 16 continue to display under Symbols, but A Year Ago This Month 34 continues to display under the A heading. The situation that I describe is a FM book being updated to match the current version of the software. Screen shots are updated, and a bit of text added. No Word files were imported. Besides, I have been importing Word files and saving as text since mid-1999 and I have not seen this situation until now. /\/\ Murray

FM 6.0p405 XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 2 In my book's index, page numbers are appearing under the Symbols heading; 16, 18, 24, etc. I traced each of these numbers to its source index marker, e.g. one of the page numbers under the Symbols heading, 34, is the A Year Ago This Month button heading on page 34. On page 34 I deleted and recreated the index marker. But when I updated the book and the index, 34 continues to display under Symbols. On page 34 I deleted the index marker. Save as RTF?
Version 6.0p405 Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 2 I am trying to convince my manager to buy mif2go. Does Save as RTF, and Save as Microsoft Word Win 6.0/7.0, ever work, under any circumstance? If yes, what is the procedure? If no (rhetorical question), why are they in the list of Save options? /\/\ Murray Mississauga
