Thanks for the unlocker.
Seems a useful tool. I have similar pbms with files 'can't delete' quite
often.

This little utility is a handy way to see what application has a lock on
any

given file, and optionally release the lock it pops up whenever a lock
condition prevents updating.

 http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

I often had experiences with Acrobat (I use Acro 7) where I need to close
Acrobat in order to create a PDF of the same name -- not just close the PDF
itself, but close Acrobat, in order for the file lock to be removed.

I have a typical Frame Book with .fm files in it. When I save it to PDF
in a new folder, it's fine. When I try to resave, I get the following
 message:

Adobe PDF cannot access the file because it is un use by another
 application or process:

 G:\\blah\blah\blah\mypdf.pdf

Verify that the file is not open by another application or process and
 try again.

It's weird because no one else is accessing the file and it's not open
 by any other program.

I suspect that you're just seeing a default error message, and that the
file might NOT actually be in use by another app... But you can find out
for sure by using either Handle or Process Explorer:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Proces
sExplorer.mspx

Handle is a command-line program; the command to find the process that
has mypdf.pdf open is simply handle mypdf.

If you're not comfortable with the DOS command line, Process Explorer is
a GUI tool. After installing it, ctrl-F will open a search box into
which you can type mypdf.

If you decide to use Handle, note that wildcard characters are neither

In fact, FrameMaker treats a network drive no
differently than a local drive. It doesn't
and shouldn't need to do anything special when
opening, reading, writing, or closing a file
stored on a drive that isn't local to the actual
execution of FrameMaker. For better or worse, it
relies on the operating system FrameMaker is
running on, the operating system of the system on
which the network drive is attached, and the
system administration of same to make access to
non-local drives.

Problems that are most typically seen relate to
(1) improper permissions set on the files,
directories, or both on the network drives
and (2) incompatibilities between the user's
OS and the network drive's OS, especially when
accessing NetWare-based or various UNIX-based
network shares from Windows.

What exactly do you think FrameMaker should be
doing that it isn't doing now with regards to
such files?

Weird Frame to PDF problem

2007-01-27 Thread John Sgammato
I work with Frame over a network every day. I produce a number of books using
hundreds of files, and none of them are on my local machine. FrameMaker is on
my local machine, and everything else is on the network. I have done this for
years without incident.
Frame has often had trouble with networks, but to say it has "never worked"
over a network is hyperbole that may cause Gillian to miss a more important
problem.

 by any other program.

My IT guy looked at the file and said that there was no security info
on it. The only way he could break the link to the PDF so I could
delete it was to reboot the server. I am working on a network drive.

Gillian:

I suspect that you're just seeing a default error message, and that the
file might NOT actually be in use by another app... But you can find out
for sure by using either Handle or Process Explorer:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Proces
sExplorer.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/handle.mspx

Handle is a command-line program; the command to find the process that
has mypdf.pdf open is simply handle mypdf.

If you're not comfortable with the DOS command line, Process Explorer is
a GUI tool. After installing it, ctrl-F will open a search box into
which you can type mypdf.

RE: Weird Frame to PDF problem

2007-01-26 Thread John Sgammato
I work with Frame over a network every day. I produce a number of books using
hundreds of files, and none of them are on my local machine. FrameMaker is on
my local machine, and everything else is on the network. I have done this for
years without incident.
Frame has often had trouble with networks, but to say it has never worked
over a network is hyperbole that may cause Gillian to miss a more important
problem.

And there you have it.

Does this give anyone any ideas? As we get toward release time, I am
constantly rebuilding this PDF. This problem is really hosing me up.

Frame has *never* worked properly with network drives.
Sad, considering it was born on UNIX, but true. Work on
a local drive, then copy the end result to the network.

No doubt. But many other people have not had this happy an
experience. Check the archives of this list for many reports.
In particular, trouble often occurs after a file is opened
successfully; sometimes there is a failure when it is saved,
sometimes when it's used in generating a book, etc. It's
not totally predictable. But it's something to check, first.

Please! Spare me the misquote! I said *never* worked properly,
and leaving off the qualifier is quite a misrepresentation!

Nope. The point is, she can quickly determine if that is the
problem by *trying* it locally. If the problem goes away, she
can continue with her project. If it doesn't, she needs to
continue troubleshooting. It's a quick and easy test to make.

really weird frame to PDF problem

2006-03-10 Thread Gillian Flato
Just got Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Pro today. When I make my PDF (I use Print to
PDF Printer), the PDF only prints some of the leders in my TOC. The bold
ones are picked up and some of the plain text ones, but not all. It
seems totally random. Any ideas?
