For pgf tags, you can use MIFMuncher to create a new document of tag
characteristics:

Or use Ctrl-m as others have suggested, just to view settings on screen.
(There is also Ctrl-d for the Character Designer and Ctrl-t for the
Table Designer.)

Select View in the menubar.
On the submenu, you probably have Borders checked. Select Borders to
remove the checkmark. The dotted lines vanish.

The text frame for the body text for your Body page is located on the
Master Page if you need need to follow the instructions from Rebecca
Officer about editing.
You will also get dotted lines from anchored frames, for example, but
they are on your Body page if they are created there. Checking or
unchecking Borders makes them visible or invisible no matter where
they are.

If you are asking whether you can change the look of the dotted lines
(to a solid line for example), I don't believe you can. Others may
have a comment about this.

Hope this helps a bit more.

BTW If you can get a copy of Adobe's Classroom in a Book for 5.5, that
should be quite useful. It is an excellent starting point for new
FrameMaker users - at least, that was my personal experience.

Karen,

Thanks for your reply, but no, I am not asking about
how to change the look of the dotted lines, because
they don't show up on the final copy (at least I don't
think they do). I am asking about how to manipulate,
i.e. resize, them. I would rather see them so I know
where they are.

I will look for that book you mentioned in a used book
shop near here.

btw, you don't have to send me a message and then the
same message to the list, because I will see it there,
and it will avoid my getting duplicate messages. I
would just delete the one, but I am not sure whether
you are telling me something different than what you
are telling the list until I actually open both.

Nope, they won't show up in the final copy. They are only there for

FM - tags and text boxes

2006-07-11 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Merry

First, back your file up before you play with text frames on Master
pages. You can get unexpected results. Also, remember that changing the
text frame on a master page changes it for all pages that use that
master page. You can change single body pages (in the same way as I
describe below for master pages), but it's better to avoid doing so. If
you do change a body page, that change is tied to the page number, *not*
the content of the page, so you have to do it just before publication.

So, on your master page, hold down the Ctrl key and click inside a box.
That selects that text frame. Then you can drag it to move it, drag the
handles to resize it, delete it, or use the menu option Format >
Customise layout > Customise text frame to control it.

To select multiple frames, Ctrl-click in each in turn. To deselect
frames, click somewhere on the page outside the frame. You can also copy
a selected frame/s, go to another master page, and paste the selected
frame/s into the page. That can be a quick way to get consistency.

Cheers, Rebecca

You could save any of the files containing the tag set to MIF. Then look
at the MIF in a text editor. Locate the tag name and see what Frame did

Re: FM - tags

OK,

I have to ask the silly question. My assumption was that you wanted a
comprehensive
list of all formatting parameters of all tags in a file wrapped up in
a neat package.
On reading your follow-up, however, you seem to be asking how to view
the parameters
of an individual tag as you would using the paragraph designer tool.
Format Paragraphs Designer or Ctrl+m

So, to see the parameters of the tag you are in you press Ctrl+m and
look at the tabs.

Is this not what you're looking for? What other parameters are you
wanting to see?

You can see the properties in the Paragraph Designer. FrameMaker remembers
the Paragraph Designer's last position. Perhaps it got moved to a position
that is no longer visible on-screen. For example, changing your monitor to a
lower resolution could cause the old position to now be in a place that is
off-screen and invisible. To fix it, close FrameMaker and open maker.ini for
editing. Look under [DialogLayout] for a Pformat entry. Change it to
something like Pformat=50, 50 to reposition the Paragraph Designer to a
spot you can see. Then, when you reload FrameMaker and your document, you
will be able to use Control-m to open and see the Paragraph Designer again,
and move it to where you want.

Re: FM - tags and text boxes

2006-07-10 Thread rebecca officer

Then you can drag it to move it, drag the
handles to resize it, delete it, or use the menu option Format
Customise layout Customise text frame to control it.

Again, thanks to several of you, especially those who
told me about Ctrl - M. As you all can probably tell,
I am new to FrameMaker.

Another issue I have is the text boxes outlined by
dotted lines. How does one change them? I would have
thought it was possible when you switch the View to
Master Pages but I don't see how.

I found a tutorial online but I am not finding the
answers I need in it.

You could save any of the files containing the tag set to MIF. Then look
at the MIF in a text editor. Locate the tag name and see what Frame did
with your settings.

I believe Silicon Prairie makes a plug in that lists the tag parameters...

Are we making this too complicated?

To see all of the characteristics of the paragraph where the curser is
located, just type ctrl + m.

Thanks to several of you who replied to my question.
This is much more complicated than I had any idea of.
I am definitely not up for getting more products and
having to deal with them.

What I really don't understand is why it is not at
least possible to see what the formatting choices are
for the tag you are IN!!

2006-07-10 Thread Art Campbell

Format > Paragraphs > Designer or Ctrl+m

So, to see "the parameters of the tag you are in" you press Ctrl+m and
look at the tabs.

Is this not what you're looking for? What other parameters are you
wanting to see?

You can see the properties in the Paragraph Designer. FrameMaker remembers
the Paragraph Designer's last position. Perhaps it got moved to a position
that is no longer visible on-screen. For example, changing your monitor to a
lower resolution could cause the old position to now be in a place that is
off-screen and invisible. To fix it, close FrameMaker and open maker.ini for
editing. Look under "[DialogLayout]" for a Pformat entry. Change it to
something like "Pformat=50, 50" to reposition the Paragraph Designer to a
spot you can see. Then, when you reload FrameMaker and your document, you
will be able to use Control-m to open and see the Paragraph Designer again,
and move it to where you want.
