[Framers] Handling dictionaries for FM-9 to FM-14

2017-07-19 Thread Klaus Daube
   Dear all,

Especially in the German lists there are discussions about misbehaving
words and the difficulty to get them out of the dictionary or get them
   corrected in the dictionary.

Hence I decided to design a utility for [1]handling the dictionary
   entries.

There are a number of open questions, because - for me - the process is
not transparent and what is written in the user guide is at least
   incomplete.

Before diving into serious work let me hear your comments on this.

   Klaus

Re: [Framers] Converting a structured FM 9 guide to FM 11

2016-05-18 Thread Scott Prentice
You need a structure application to open XML files in FM. Do you still have the
FM 9 installation? What XML model are you using? Open the XML file in notepad
and send the top line (starts with "DOCTYPE").

Hi Scott,

Unfortunately, I have no experience with structured Frame and the previous
writer did not leave the app definition file. I inherited only the FM9
files which consists of a book file with a few .xml files. Is there no
other way to do this without it? I only have Frame11.

Thanks,

No conversion. Just "install" the structured application you're using on FM9
into FM11. Then you should be able to open the XML files.

Should be able to copy the app files to FM11 in a similar location to where
they are in FM9. Then copy the structure app definition from FM9 to FM11.

I have seen this with earlier versions of FM, and it is not FM's fault, but Microsoft's.

Any new features will be lost when opened in FM9 (like Object Styles). If you
make sure you use none of the new features saving to MIF is no problem.

You can save backwards by saving the FM12 content as MIF. If you have several
writers, you might want one of them to be the pioneer with a few projects. Then
that person can report back to the rest and help them as they learn the new
features.

FM 9 and FM 12

2014-06-17 Thread Winberg, Harold
We are considering going from FM 9 to FM 12.

Is there a problem of opening FM 12 in FM 9 as we convert. If so; does anyone
have a solution.

I was thinking to keep both until all is converted. Anything else to consider.

What is the rule-restriction about opening in different versions of Frame?

Thank you

If FM is already open, I have tested opening/editing/saving a FM file

If i click on the taskbar where FM is pinned to launch the application, the

have a start-up file; I removed it and redid the test with a similar FM crash.

Any suggestions?

Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes

2014-01-24 Thread Simon BUCH
Hello Stephen,

I would hazard a guess that Microsoft terminal services client [AKA
Remote Desktop Connection] is sharing your printers, hard drives, usb
drives, and the Windows clipboard buffer on your local workstation with
your remote machine.

I have seen effects where changing printers and the Windows clipboard
buffer can adversely affect Remote Desktop, so I would recommend running
"mstsc.exe", selecting the "local resources" tab, and changing the
settings to the default connection, or save the settings as a "RDP"
connection profile.

Regards
// Simon BUCH -- M-AIS

Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes

2014-01-23 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Salut a chilly Toronto!

Has this ever worked for you? I run FM via RDP from home most days, but I first
VPN into our corporate network, the RDP to my office desktop (when FM is
installed) and run it from there. No crashes (except the "known" ones) doing it
that way.
In your scenario, where is FM running?

Hi,

I have FM 9 (latest patch) running on Windows 7. I want to use FM via Remote
Desktop.

If FM is already open, I have tested opening/editing/saving a FM file
sucessfully.

If i click on the taskbar where FM is pinned to launch the application, the
typical FM error screen is shown after a few seconds. I have FrameScript and do
have a start-up file; I removed it and redid the test with a similar FM crash.

Any suggestions?

B...Here in Quebec CIty it is -35 Celcius with the wind and has been like
that for a week now. As I walk 30 minutes to and from a bus stop on weekdays, I
have taken to wearing a hood used when skiing! I look like a thief who is
smoking heavily but do not attract any attention. After a 1/2 hour of walking,
even my snacks (chewy bars) are frozen! And the polar bears drinking the Pepsi
look so happy in those ads :)

Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes

2014-01-23 Thread Art Campbell
I haven't tried to do FM with a Remote Desktop, but the first thing that
occurred to me is that the program may not be executing with Admin
privileges. Are all the user permissions in order on both sides of the
desktop?

Just as a control, you may want to try a third party solution such as
CrossLoop (my choice) or GoToMyPC... I think they're both free trials.

Copy of FM 9 for coworker

2013-03-13 Thread Harvey, Peggy
Thanks to everyone who responded to my FM 9 query. Like Alison, I also received
a response from Priyank at Adobe regarding the volume and backward licensing
option. (Thanks, Priyank!)

I've talked to my manager about the options, and I think we're going to hold
off trying to get a FM 9 license right now and address some other issues first,
then determine the best course of action going forward. It's looking like
upgrading to FM 11 at both sites with a volume license may be the best
solution, but there are some other factors we need to consider first.

Thanks,

Peggy

RE: Copy of FM 9 for coworker

2013-03-13 Thread Fred Ridder

But note that any FM9 license that was used to qualify for an upgrade to FM10
or FM11 has been deactivated (at least in theory...) and is no longer eligible
for transfer to a new owner.

Oops, that's the one with FM10. TCS 2 and 2.5 included FM9.

RE: Copy of FM 9 for coworker

2013-03-13 Thread Harvey, Peggy
Thanks to everyone who responded to my FM 9 query. Like Alison, I also received
a response from Priyank at Adobe regarding the volume and backward licensing
option. (Thanks, Priyank!)

I've talked to my manager about the options, and I think we're going to hold
off trying to get a FM 9 license right now and address some other issues first,
then determine the best course of action going forward. It's looking like
upgrading to FM 11 at both sites with a volume license may be the best
solution, but there are some other factors we need to consider first.

Thanks,

Peggy

FM 9 - Logical Network Drive

2013-03-05 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

I wrote a few months ago about images, imported by reference, blinking on
screen. The FM files and images are on a network server.

The problem seems to be that the new tech writer used SnagIt to save new screen
captures using the network logical drive specification
(\\Oseille = X:).

By scripting I did a search and replace. All seems well now. Quite a relief.

Anyone else save images to a network drive using a logical drive specification?
Any problems.

A limit to hyperlinked indexes in FM 9?

2012-11-28 Thread Rob Shell
Hi Framers:
I was wondering if anyone noticed the warning in the FM9 online manual?
Namely
"Important: If you're generating extremely large indexes (indexes of more
than 50,000 markers), don't use Create Hypertext Links. Generating indexes
of this size with Create Hypertext Links selected takes a long time or might
not succeed"

This is horrible if true.
Some of my indexes are not clickable.
When I click on the index using a box appears with the address.
Is Frame telling me I have reached the limit?

If the network server is Windows, have you checked that the problem
workstations are not causing the count of connections to the network to topple
over the OS licence limit?

FM 9 Blinking linked images

2012-11-21 Thread Dave Reynolds
I have also worked on a network for many years - both the Frame files
and referenced graphics are on a network drive. Mostly this works really
well, especially in recent years with network upgrades.

There are two occasions when I canremember having serious speed
problems. The first was in 2008 when the company upgraded our antivirus
software. It was set to scan certain types of graphic file as Frame was
importing them. Excluding these file types from being scanned solved
that problem. The second was earlier this month, again after an upgrade
to the antivirus software. When importing a file from a network

What everyone else said, but just another thought --

If the network server is Windows, have you checked that the problem
workstations are not causing the count of connections to the network to topple
over the OS licence limit?

I see what you mean by copying the documents and images locally, but in our

how to copy the document, its images, and its text insets and their images in a

Frame has never, ever, worked right with network drives. This really should be
in the KB, but I guess they don't want such features known, at least before
purchase. :-(

Alter your workflow to copy the docs and graphics to a local drive, and work on
them there. Same problem with RH, and possibly other TCS components.

Some may say it works for them, but they are a small minority...

Re: FM 9 Blinking linked images

2012-11-20 Thread Dave Reynolds
I have also worked on a network for many years - both the Frame files
and referenced graphics are on a network drive. Mostly this works really
well, especially in recent years with network upgrades.

There are two occasions when I canremember having serious speed
problems. The first was in 2008 when the company upgraded our antivirus
software. It was set to scan certain types of graphic file as Frame was
importing them. Excluding these file types from being scanned solved
that problem. The second was earlier this month, again after an upgrade
to the antivirus software. When importing a file from a network
directory, the AV software decided it should scan that directory and any
sub-directories first. Once that was turned off, speed returned to normal.

Just posting this in case it's of any use to anyone in the future.

FM 9 Blinking linked images

2012-11-20 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Salut,

We are several tech writers using books/documents on a server, containing
images imported by reference (also on the server). Network file locking is
activated. The network is relatively fast.

Every day on the same workstation (FM9.0p.255, Windows 7 SP1), even in small
documents (2 pages, 1 image), the image starts to blink. FM seems to freeze at
this point (cannot scroll in the document or access menus). Must wait. Can last
for minutes. A reboot re-establishes some order for a while (hours).

The writer often has used Snag-It to get a screen shot just previous to this
behavior. We all use Snag-It for screen captures.

Any ideas? Our IT people are not familiar with FM and have not seen this
problem before. I have searched the knowledge base without success.

Thx for any suggestions.

Hi Rob,

Since FM 11 is available as a trial now, you might consider installing
it to see if the problem persists when you update your books using it.
(Different versions of FM can co-exist one one system.) Sorry I can't
offer any diagnostics on the problem itself.

PS: please don't reply to the digest, as it clogs up everyone's inbox,
and please don't start a new thread by replying to an existing one --
that messes up threading in the archives.

Good luck with the indexing,

Find an old index that works and import all styles from it. That should erase

Tammy, if you have Shlomo Peret's enhanced toolbar, one of its tools is to copy
a table width to the clipboard. (If I'm mistkane here and is a Frame feature, I
apologize. I've copied my .ini file and plug-ins from so many versions of FM I
no longer know which tool goes with what plugin.)

So if I were you, I'd make one pass through the tables and add a row to each
table using a keyboard macro; then I'd make a second pass through the tables,
select the right-most column, and paste the width from the clipboard. It might
save a few mouse-clicks.

Shlomo's toolbar also has "Add column to right" and "Add row below" buttons
-- very handy. Highly recommended for these and many, many other features.

So if I were you, I'd make one pass through the tables and add a row to each
table using a keyboard macro; then I'd make a second pass through the
tables, select the right-most column, and paste the width from the

Shlomo's toolbar also has "Add column to right" and "Add row below" buttons

My FrameMaker 10 upgrade didn't uninstall FM9. It installed right along

Re: Cross-reference oddity in FM 9

Hi Rene

Schlomo's the expert on this, but I think your alternative font has to be an
oblique/italics font, not just any different font. In his example of
"Univers-Condensed Oblique", FM preserves the oblique format in xrefs because
the font only has oblique glyphs. Your HelveticaNeueLT Std Cn has ordinary
glyphs so FM uses them.

I'm not sure I'm using the right terminology here but hopefully this makes
sense anyway.

Schlomo, I think I'm missing something or doing it wrong. I'm attaching an
updated Sample.FM. I changed the font family for Italic char tag to
HelveticaNeueLT Std Cn, since that's the most similar font to Arial Narrow that
I have installed on this PC. It shows fine in the variable definition, but
when the variable is used in the heading, and then the heading text is xref'd
via <$paratext>, it is still not picking up the angle. I don't understand why
it works for you, but I'm not getting the desired result. Is it a bug in my FM
file or something?

{Aside: It seems to me that either Adobe might want to consider adding another
building block that does include the character formats applied to text for
cross-references, so that writers have the choice of which standard to follow;
or perhaps this is a limitation that doesn't exist in FM 10?}

Thanks,
Rene

Rebecca's clarification is correct -- you need a font where the italic
variation is part of the font identity/name itself (i.e. Italic/Oblique
appears in the Family field in the Character Designer).

If you don't currently have such a font in your font list, it is possible
to define one of the existing fonts like that through maker.ini.

The behavior you see, as well as the workaround, apply to all versions of
FrameMaker (including FM10).

Notice that in the context of generated files, <$paratext> retains all
character formatting if they are the result of a character tag (untagged
font properties are not retained) -- so your Product Name variable will be
displayed properly in the TOC without any change to its current definition.

Cross-reference oddity in FM 9

2012-02-21 Thread Rene Stephenson
Schlomo,

I'm sorry, yes, I did miss that the angle had to be part of the font family
name (mea culpa),? so I
wasn't getting the fix right.

You wrote:

Schlomo, I'm sorry, I hope you can be patient as I am truly trying to follow
your lead. I'm attaching an updated Sample.FM.? I created a new char tag for
this situation called Italic Single, using the font family Eras Medium ITC,
since that's the most similar obliqued font family to Arial Narrow (Italic)
that? I have
installed on this PC. (I don't have Univers fonts, and all the other obliqued
or italic fonts that show in Windows > Fonts show as the standard family name
in FM so that it would require italic as an angle setting within the Character
Designer.) Doing this does work as you described, but the regular angle of Eras
Medium ITC isn't quite enough of an angle to be distinguishable when applied to
an "i" beside R900.

However, since Swis721 Cn BT font family is more similar to Arial Narrow and
also isn't used elsewhere, I could edit the maker.ini as you mentioned without
causing difficult-to-manage ripple-effects.
Previously you said:

Would this be the correct change to make in the maker.ini?
Under [WindowsToFrameFontAliases]
Swis721 Cn BT, Italic, *=Swis721 Cn BT, Oblique, *, Regular

I had noticed that, which is why I figured I must have done something wrong in
my cross-reference definition. I didn't understand what looked to me like
inconsistency in treatment of the same building block.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Nothing is wrong in how you do this.

However, in the context of cross-references, <$paratext> ignores all
character formatting present in the extracted paragraph text, except
superscript, subscript and font family properties - which are retained only
if implemented through a character tag.

To preserve a property such as italic (or bold), you need to have a
different font name for the required variation (even though visually it is
the identical font); alternatively, use a different font. For example, I
have "Univers-Condensed Oblique" in my font list; text tagged with a
character format using this font preserves its italic property when it is
cross-referenced. Some font families are installed this way by default.

If you don't have such a similar font in your current font list, you can
instruct FrameMaker to treat the Italic variation of Arial Narrow as a
distinct font name through the maker.ini file (but then Italic will not be
displayed as an available angle for Arial Narrow in the Character or
Paragraph Designer, you will have to choose a different font -- Arial
Narrow Italic -- to get the Italic).

have it working fine in the variable for the product name, but the one
thing I can't seem to figure out is why it only shows default
paragraph font for the x-ref, unless I include a char format tag in
the x-ref definition...which then applies the char tag to the whole
building block...but the single italic i is just one character within
the building block.

Is there something that I am missing, or is this impossible to do in
the way I'm attempting? I have attached a sample file stripped of all
but the relevant formats involved with this issue, if someone could
please take a look and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Cross-reference oddity in FM 9

2012-02-20 Thread Rene Stephenson
Hi All,

I am having some trouble getting character formatting to read through in a
cross-reference. The challenge is that the character formatting is part of the
trademarked product name, so we do need the single letter i at the end of the
product name to always appear in italics. I have it working fine in the
variable for the product name, but the one thing I can't seem to figure out is
why it only shows default paragraph font for the x-ref, unless I include a char
format tag in the x-ref definition...which then applies the char tag to the
whole building block...but the single italic i is just one character within the
building block.

Is there something that I am missing, or is this impossible to do in the way
I'm attempting? I have attached a sample file stripped of all but the relevant
formats involved with this issue, if someone could please take a look and tell
me what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks,

?

Opening a PDF file from FM 9 to a named destination

With your information that the named destination

Opening a PDF file from FM 9 to a named destination

2012-01-01 Thread Stephen O'Brien
Hi,

I am using FM 9, latest patch, under Windows 7 (32-bit).

I have a simple FM file (3 pages) with a named
destination created via a hypertext command
(Specify Named Destination) on page 2 and a
hyperlink (Jump To Named Destination) to it on
page 3. I create the PDF file using the Adobe
Printer. In the PDF Setup I have specified Create links and Tags as well.

I need to be able to open the file using a URL
command as below, in a navigator like Internet
Explorer. It should open to the correct location on page 2 using this command.

file:///c:/max_jan1.pdf#nameddest=TagForMax

The PDF opens to page 1, not page 2 where the
Named Destination is located. But the hyperlink
on page 3 works, as clicking it brings me to page 2, to the exact location.

Any suggestions? I cannot see what I am doing wrong.

Thx in advance and Happy New Year!

Change defaults for New Document in FM 9? WORKAROUND

2011-11-02 Thread Stuart Rogers
Thanks Penelope, and also Richard for suggesting shellnew.fm.

The FM9 Help topic basically repeats John Bevan's instructions, below.
I tried that method (and now I'm pretty sure it was the "Custom"
document that I had modified in FM7), but it does not work in FM9. When
I create a new blank document now, I do see in the catalogs all the
formats I created/modified as instructed below; but the ruler remains
stubbornly in metric. Oddly, both the custom file and the shellnew.fm
file, when dragged into the FM9 workspace, open with the ruler
displaying inches. But File > New > Document opens with the ruler in
metric, whether I choose Portrait, Landscape, or Custom (even with the
Units set to Inches in the Custom dialog box that appears).

I'm beginning to think this is something that got broken along the way
from ver. 7 to ver. 9, and I give up.

I have saved a new template called PortraitBlank.fm in the Templates
folder. All I have to do now is break my habit of choosing the Portrait
button and retrain myself to select PortraitBlank when I reach the New
Document dialog box.

Thanks anyway!

Stuart

on this topic from Debbi Fortney Correia, which goes over the same
info (but seems more complete than my v8 help). Caveat: I've never

Actually, there are a couple of other ways to accomplish this.
Remember it is ALWAYS a good idea to make a copy of the config file
you are going to change, just in case!

From the v6 online help (Templates, Changing templates for blank
paper and text files):

To change the template for blank paper:

1 Change a document so it contains the formats and settings you
want [note this could include xref formats, color definitions,
variable definitions, etc.]. Leave existing master pages empty and do
not create custom master pages.

2 Remove all text frames from both the left and right master
pages-even if a document is single-sided. (If the document is
single-sided, choose Format> Page Layout> Page Size, click
Double-Sided, and click Set. Then select and delete the text frames
on the master pages.)

3 Choose Special> Delete Pages and delete all body pages.

4 Save the document, using one of the following filenames and
locations:

. (Windows) The Custom file in the FrameMaker fminit folder (When
you choose New> Adobe FrameMaker document from the context menu in a
folder or on the desktop, the Shellnew.fm file is used.) .
(Macintosh) The Custom New Document file in the FrameMaker Modules
folder . (UNIX) The NewTemplate file in the
$FMHOME/fminit/language/CustomDocs folder (language is the name of
your user interface language-for example, usenglish or ukenglish.)

You'll have to restart Frame after modifying the file to see the
change. Note in Windows the file is named "custom" with no
extension.

In the maker.ini file, there is a setting in the [Files] section
that allows you to use a different file for new docs. I haven't
tested this, but I would assume you would need to create the document
in the same way as listed above.

CustomDoc=fminit\custom

Of course if what you want is NOT a blank page, you would create a
"regular" FrameMaker file and choose it as the template to use when
creating a new document, rather than clicking one of the "Blank"
options. To make it easier to access this file, you can either save
it in the FrameMaker\Templates directory, or modify the location of
templates in the .ini file (TemplateDir=templates in the
[Directories] section.

Now get back to work. :)

I believe you're looking for shellnew.fm, and it should be in the fminit

I believe you're looking for shellnew.fm, and it should be in the fminit
directory.

I need to do the same thing now in FM 9 (TCS 2, Win XP), but cannot
remember the file name or location. Can anyone help me out?

Hi Su,

There are two ways to apply master pages to body pages: Apply Master
Pages, and Master Page Usage. The former requires a table on the
reference pages to correlate master pages and pgf tags. Are you using
the correct command, and if using Apply M.P., have you double-checked
the reference page entries?

Have you tried assigning the M.P. manually with the M.P. Usage command?

When you created the text boxes in the master pages, did you assign them
the function of Background Text, or (incorrectly) Template for Body Page
Text? The latter will put an empty text frame on the body page
regardless of the presence of text in the template frame on the master page.

AW: Fm 9 + 10: export list of "unresolved graphic insets" (aka"missing graphics")?

2011-06-19 Thread Maike Roeder
Hi Yves,

If you use ‚Book Transfer‘ (www.toolboxforme.com or www.finalyser.com for
FM10) you can get a list of all referenced files.

By running the second step of Book Transfer you can also archive all of your
referenced files.
