RE: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special character problems

2014-03-24 Thread Fei Min Lorente
Wow! Thanks to everyone who replied. I'm sorry I've taken so long to close this
thread, but other work got in the way, and there were so many things to try! I
don't think I got to them all, but here is what worked for me on my colleague's
virtual machine:

* Copy the infinity symbol from a Word document and use Paste Special >
Rich Text Format in FrameMaker. If I use a regular paste, I get a question mark.

* Copy the infinity symbol from the Windows character map
(Programs>Accessories>System Tools) and use Paste Special. But Winfried has a
warning that the Windows Character Map might show characters that are not part
of the font you're using.

* Alt+0165 as blogged by Matt Sullivan, which gave me a yen symbol, and
then I applied the Symbol font. I was trying 221E and I think Heiko Haida tried
to explain that I can't produce characters over 00FF hex without modifying my
Windows, so thanks for the alternate ANSI code, Matt.

I was able to use the info in the FrameMaker Character Sets doc to insert using
ANSI code 0165. The "trick" is to set the font to Symbol.

And if this isn't too late to the party:

Alt+236 produces the infinity symbol in the Arial font.
Ctrl+q+4 produces the infinity symbol in the Symbol font (looks a bit
bolded compared to Arial).

RE: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special

2014-02-18 Thread Davis, David
If your colleague is getting the question mark,
that's FrameMaker's way of telling you that "the font you have asked me to use
doesn't have a glyph for that character".

It's not uncommon for tech author's to be lumbered with using a font in a Frame
Template that someone in the company's Marketing Dept picked because it looks
nice, and that someone in the company's IT dept installed cos it was cheap,
without realising that it is doesn't have gylphs for a lot of useful technical
symbols etc...

If you've cut-and-pasted in from Word just by doing Ctrl+V, then chances are
you've over-ridden the Frame paragraph style and/or character style for the
surrounding text (so Frame may not be trying to use the font you think it's
using) - to avoid this, paste into Frame using "Paste Special" and asking it to
paste as unformatted Unicode text (Alt, E, S, U, return).

Also make sure your PC has the most up-to-date version of the font installed,
as font vendors issue new versions every year or two, usually containing more
glyphs. (Check in Control Panel > Font to find the version of the font that
you have, and on the vendor's website to see if there's a new version... and
then if it's not free, have fun emailing Marketing & IT and trying to get them
to understand what you're talking about and why you'd like them to spend money
on a new version of a font...)

You may simply find that the font you have been told to use doesn't have a
glyph for the character you need. In that case, you can work around it by
making a special character style that will apply a suitable font which does
have the character...

Thank you for the directions to the Character Palette. That works for me, but
my colleague is still getting a question mark when she tries to insert the
infinity symbol. There?s obviously something wrong with her setup.

Yes, the Character Palette is crude, so it really helped to know that 221E
would get me the infinity symbol; otherwise I could spend all day looking for
it, and still miss it.

Also, thanks for this site, Robert:
http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/221e/index.htm. It?s very
thorough, and it was reassuring to know that the infinity symbol is available
in Trebuchet, which is the font we?re using.

RE: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special character

2014-02-18 Thread Davis, David
Fei Min, there's a bit of confusion going on here!

When you say...

> it is Unicode 221E, but perhaps all that information is obsolete now

The Unicode standard is not obsolete, it is alive and well at
http://www.unicode.org :) It is not something defined by Adobe FrameMaker or
Microsoft Windows.

> In any case, I tried holding down Alt while I pressed +221e

The Windows operating system doesn't give you access to Unicode characters by
that method, so that's why that didn't work! :)

The utility bundled with Windows to get to them is the venerable Character Map
tool (quickest way to launch it is press Windows+R, type "charmap" and press
return, and up it pops...)
Its search function is not very good though, and it doesn't show you the
characters unless the currently-selected font has a glyph for it - a bit
useless, really.

If you want something a bit more rigorous and heavy duty for finding exotic
Unicode characters, I'd recommend the free Babel Map utility
http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Software/BabelMap.html

Your method of cutting-and-pasting the character you want from Word isn't so
very wrong though! - with either Character Map or Babel Map, that is still the
method you have to use: find your character in the utility, then copy and paste
it into Frame.
(The reason in may go wrong in Word is because Word might be showing a
character using a 'Dingbat' font, which substitutes a different glyph for a
different character... so when Frame renders that character with a different
font, you don't get the glyph you were expecting).

Furthermore, the FM Edit>Utilities>Character Palette also shows

I use BabelMap; once you get used to it, it's not /too /hard to use.

RE: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special character problems

2014-02-15 Thread Fred Ridder
The File > Utilities location I cited is where the Unicode/hex tools were
located in FrameMaker 9 (which is what I am still using for a variety of
reasons). Adobe being Adobe, I'm sure they have moved and/or renamed the tools
a couple of times in the intervening releases between 9 and 12.

The best suggestion is to open the PDF of the User Guide and search for "hex".
This should direct you to a dozen or two locations in the manual where the
character palette and hex input palette (or whatever they are calling them
now) are discussed, and those descriptions should tell you where the palettes
are invoked.

But for common symbols like TM, registered trademark, and copyright symbols,
the easiest solution is to use the keyboard shortcuts that you should also be
able to find in the PDF manual:
For ™: Crtl+q, then *
For ®: Ctrl+q, then (
For ©: Ctrl+q, then )

Or use the standard Windows shortcuts:
For ™: Alt+0153
For®: Alt+0173
For ©: Al+0169
Note that for each of these you hold down the Alt key while typing the 4-digit
code on the *numeric keypad* (with NumLock on, of course).

I am using FrameMaker 12, unstructured = I don't see utilities under the file
menu. Where would I find this ability to do diacriticals et al, and TM,
Registered, et al?
My workaround is to use windows character map, from which I copy and paste the
symbol I want, regardless of how it looks, into my frame document, then I go to
Frame's Character Catalogue and select the "default paragraph font" and that
does it. I have not had an incompatibility issue because I think I am using
well known adobe fonts. Am l AOK with this or an accident waiting to happen?

Is the above workaround the best solution or does Frame 12 have a better one?
Thanks,
TED

But as of FrameMaker 9, there is a tool that allows input of hexadecimal
(Unicode) character numbers. Look at File>Utilities>Hex Input. Not as
convenient as the Alt-key, but it works.

Re: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special character problems

2014-02-14 Thread Paul Wilbraham
Re. the infinity symbol, this is what I have tried:

1. When I copy the infinity symbol from the Character Map and paste it
directly into a new portrait FM document (unstructured) - paragraph set to
use Arial Unicode MS - the result is a question mark.

I also use an FM10 DITA application to create XML files, so:

2. When I copy the infinity symbol from the Character Map and paste it
directly into a DITA XML file - opened in Notepad++ - the infinity symbol
appears correctly in the XML file.

3. When I open that XML file - via my FM10 DITA application - into an FM
XML document, the infinity symbol is displayed correctly. I can copy the
infinity symbol - in DITA FM - and paste it in the Find Text window where
it also appears correct and where clicking find functions correctly.

4. I can copy the infinity symbols in my FM XML document, create a new
portrait FM document (unstructured) and it appears correct. When I then
change the para font from Arial Unicode MS to Times New Roman, the infinity
symbol still displays correctly but in the Times NR font.

5. I close and save the unstructured FM document and then reopen it and the
infinity symbols is displayed correctly in both Arial Unicode MS and Times
New Roman.

6. Lastly, I copied and pasted the symbol from the Character Map into a
regular Notepad document and saved (UTF-8 encoding) and imported this text
file by copying into the unstructured FM file and it imported correctly.

So, I also couldn't find any keyboard shortcut method to produce the symbol
either, but using method 6, I could populate my FM document with the symbol
correctly and then be able to use it freely in the document. At least a
workaround.

Re: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special character problems

2014-02-14 Thread Ed Nodland
Framemaker does not appear to handle hexadecimal values using the ALT +
numeric keypad values. It does handle decimal values but I can't determine
what the different code points (character values) are mapped to. ALT+8734
results in a solid triangle for me.

You can select File > Utilities >Character Palete and then use the single,
double and triple scroll buttons to move down to 221, then look in column E
to find the infinity symbol. Click it to insert the character into your
content.

RE: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special character problems

2014-02-14 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Fei Min,

you can not produce a character above 255 (decimal) = 00FF (hexadec.)
without "modding" your Windows.

If you absolutely want to use the "alt + ..." for Unicode characters,
you have to set the key value of "HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelInput
MethodEnableHexNumpad" to "1".

For more information how to use this, please see: -->
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_input
in the section:
"Hexadecimal code input" -->" In Microsoft Windows"

This is a very useful little trick!

-

If your colleague still gets a question mark, I think it is because a
font is applied (for whatever reason that may be...) that does not
contain this character.

Best regards -

RE: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special character problems

2014-02-14 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

Just for your information: The Windows Character Map tool
may show characters, even if they are not part of the font!
Therefore it could always happen that you try to copy and paste
a certain character although it is not part of your font!

Alternatives are.

BabelMap, free and not very user-friendly. No installation necessary.
You can start the exe which you download.
http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Software/BabelMap.html

PopChars, often recommended, not free (30 Euros)
http://www.ergonis.com/products/popcharwin/

Best regards

Thank you for the directions to the Character Palette. That works for me, but
my colleague is still getting a question mark when she tries to insert the

Yes, the Character Palette is crude, so it really helped to know that 221E
would get me the infinity symbol; otherwise I could spend all day looking for
it, and still miss it.

Also, thanks for this site, Robert:

Windows Character Map should work, but not all systems have it installed. My
company's IT department, for example, does not include it in the standard
corporate desktop image. But the necessary executable *is* present in all
Windows 7 system installations, and you can install it as a "Windows component"
from the Add Programs control panel tool.

But as of FM9, FrameMaker itself has a similar (albeit *very* crude looking...)
tool built in. Go to Edit>Utilities>Character Palette. And if you know the
Unicode character number, you can also use File>Utilities>Hex Input, whihc is
even cruder looking than the Character Palette (if that is possible).

RE: Cannot insert the infinity symbol and other special character problems

2014-02-13 Thread Fred Ridder

Fei Min,I'm on Frame 8, so I have no solutions for Frame 10, but have you tried
using Windows Character Map (under Programs>Accessories>System Tools) as a
workaround? I was able to find and copy the ∞ symbol from there.

Not a terribly elegant solution, but an alternative to copy/paste from
Word...-Lise

holding
down Alt while I pressed +221e, and all I got was the Edit menu. I can’t find
a keyboard shortcut for it. I resorted to getting the symbol in Word and
copying and pasting it into FrameMaker, but seriously, is that what I have to
do? Or do I have to create
an equation and insert the symbol?

My colleague is also working in FrameMaker 10 on Windows 7 and she can’t use
the keyboard shortcuts (such as ctrl-q shift-8 to get a TM symbol). She gets
other characters instead. She’s resorted to copying and pasting from Word, and
those
all work except for the infinity symbol. All the information I’ve found on the
internet has been for FrameMaker 7 or older. Can anyone tell me what to do for
FrameMaker 10?
