Jeff, I think we did uncheck Adobe PDF creation; however, when I went into
the newly loaded FM12, I still saw Save as PDF and Save as review PDF as
active. Wouldn't those options be disabled (grayed out) if PDF creation was not
loaded?

OK. I presume, then, that the save to PDF actually triggers FM to open
Acrobat and print the document using the Acrobat Distiller that is part of
Acrobat, not FM. If this is correct, then things should have been rendered
correctly. The computer we have all of this on also does not have a separate
version of Adobe Reader.

However, the video clips still do not play. In fact, the icons representing the
videos that are referenced in the FM document aren't even active. I've also
tried copying the videos into the FM document when I import them. The same
thing happens: the icons representing the videos are flat graphics, mouse click
does nothing.

excellent course on Lynda.com. The course is on FM10 (Essential Training)

The standalone instance of FM has been known to not be very observant of the
existence of the full Acrobat Pro version already installed - so if you don't
turn that part off, the installer clobbers your full version with the
headless one.

Regarding round-tripping review PDFs - make sure that you are all patched up in
FM - I think there were some issues with the first release of FM12.

Thanks, Jeff. Can you tell me how it can ditch the pdf plug-in from FM12?

Once that's done, if I understand correctly, I would then print to Adobe PDF
making sure that it is a tagged pdf. Reviewers then would make their edits and
comments in the pdf, which I then import into the FM12 document. However, when
I just tried this, all of the edits/comments came in misplaced. What would
cause edits and comments to be misplaced?

Certain versions of Windows include the ability to run separate installations
of different operating systems - see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine

The Review feature is a function of Acrobat - ditching the headless version
that ships with standalone FM will require the full version to be installed to
be able to use it.

OK, I'm a little confused here.

First, I'm not sure what you mean by using a virtual machine.

Second, one of the attractive features of FM12 is the save as review PDF
feature. Is is possible to unload the PDF plug-in and still keep this feature?

Only if you had the full version of Acrobat Pro and then installed the headless
version overtop of it. In that situation, you would have to uninstall Acrobat
reinstall the full Pro version to restore your functionality. I don't know if
this situation applies to you or not.

Jeff, sorry to be dense on this. Why would I run the installer again if I
already have FM12 installed? Are you saying that I should uninstall the
software, then custom re-install it?

Once that's done, if I understand correctly, I would then print to Adobe PDF

More to the point, once you have installed the headless PDF distiller that
comes with FrameMaker, trying to uninstall it is likely to clobber any
installation of Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro because the uninstall script
would be unaware of the existence of those tools and the fact that they depend
on some of the same components that the FrameMaker installaller put on your
system. It may be that if you try to uninstall the headless tool, you'll wind
up having to reinstall Acrobat. This is why it is so important to opt out of
the part of the FM installation that installs the headless distiller.

It might be the case that the FrameMaker installer has been made more
intelligent in recent versions of Frame so that it actually checks for an
existing Acrobat installation (I'm still back on FM9 for several reasons si I
don't know about newer installations...), but I wouldn't count on it.

Re: Problem with playing video clips in FM 12 document viewed in Adobe Reader 11

2014-11-17 Thread Mike Wickham

First, I'm not sure what you mean by using a virtual machine.

I don't know how to best explain it, but a virtual machine is basically
a software program, like Virtual PC, that runs on your computer. It
creates an, artificial computer in memory, where you install the
operating system of choice. Once the virtual machine is created, when
you run it, the experience is exactly like working on a computer with
that operating system. Multiple virtual machines can be installed on the
same computer. So, a person might have one each for XP, Vista, Windows
7, etc. installed on a single computer.

Here are a couple of links for the virtual machine software from
Microsoft, which is probably the most commonly used:

Overview of Virtual PC software and versions:

versions, but not Home):

Are all of these versions of Adobe Reader on the same computer? If so,
Adobe recommends against that, as they tend to stomp all over each
other, breaking things. The same thing can happen if you have Reader
installed on the same computer as Acrobat. If you have Acrobat, you
should not install Reader or the PDF Creation Add-on that comes with
FrameMaker on that same computer.
