shortcuts not working RE: FM12 Transparent Graphics PLUS New Question

2015-06-05 Thread Craig Ede
I really think this is a result of the way the pods work. This can result in
mistaking where your active cursor is.

I have never seen the shrink-wrap shortcut ignored in FM 10, 11 or 12 (and I
use that function a lot). But such shortcuts won't work if you're cursor is
sitting in a pod or if your caps lock key is on. Not time this happens, check
to make sure where you selection is. (One assumes either the frame or any
graphic element within the frame is selected when using the shortcut, but
double check that.)

The pods take some getting used to, but you can set them up in saveable ways
that suit you and pop them open and closed easily from their docked positions
so they take up little screen real estate. And knowing whether you are in them
or not is predictable as well.

BTW: I've been working a lot in FM8 for the last 6 weeks and the way book files
are handled (and the constraint of having files all having to live together
within one window on one screen) is driving me batty. This is much better
handled in modern FrameMaker versions like FM12.

FrameMaker 9 broke a lot of keyboard shortcuts and Adobe still has not
fixed many of them. See the email from Adobe I posted in the thread

I'm using FM8 on Win7 64-bit and I've noticed similar, but only when I have one
or more of those right-hand-side menus open. I don't need to restart Frame to
get the shortcuts back, though, just close those (damned near useless)
side-menus. It was the same when I had FM8 installed on XP.

I'm using Frame 8 on Win7 and occasionally the keyboard shortcuts
(standard and custom) stop working for me too. As yet, I haven't found
out why. I have to restart Frame to get them working again.

RE: FM12 Transparent Graphics PLUS New Question

2015-06-03 Thread Keith Soltys
I find FrameMaker's menu structure quite illogical, although I know it by heart
after using Frame for almost 20 years. I have found, with Microsoft's Office
applications, that the ribbon interface has made me more productive and does
make it easier to find less used commands.

One thing though that Adobe should consider implementing, if they do modify
Frame to use a ribbon interface, is an equivalent to the Quick Access Toolbar.
I've set up my Word with a QAT of about 30 icons for my most frequently used
commands (including some macros) and set the ribbon to show only when I click
on the pane name. I had actually created something similar using a custom
toolbar in Word 2003, but this is much easier to set up and use.

As always, preferences vary, and I quite appreciate that this may not work for
everyone.

Keith

Keith,

In my opinion, the ribbon is not any better than menus that use drop-down
lists. In most instances (for me), the ribbon is less intuitive than drop-down
menus, and I frequently struggle to find specific commands. My tired old eyes
prefer larger fonts and images, but the ribbons take up a lot of screen real
estate compared to a single row of menu items. Why not offer drop-down menus
that can be pulled away as free floating and dockable pods?

All software house should provide an interface option that allows users to get
all of the new features (in any specific release) with a choice of interface
options: menu driven choices, ribbon choices, pod choices, keyboard commands,
etc.

And, of course, they should not rearrange the location of various commands
unless those commands were truly in odd locations previously. Marketing
decisions often seem to override functionality in favor of glitz and glitter.

If the focus is on one of the pods, the keyboard commands may not work.
My most-often-used command is Reset Workspace (to my Blank workspace,

With FM12 through update 12.0.2.389 transparent graphics worked for me if I
printed to CMYK. It takes longer but works. I had two graphics with clipping
paths that I was using on top of a patterned background. I never saw thin lines
around the borders either.

With the later FM12 updates CMYK caused some graphics to disappear entirely so
that made CMYK printing impossibly chancy. RGB worked fine but lost the
transparency.

I never had problems with Esc-m-p except when the caps lock key was
accidentally on or when neither a graphic or an anchored frame weren't
selected. Worked every time for me. Same with non-breaking hyphens, so maybe
your caps lock key is on. Can't comment on the en and em spaces.

Good luck,

Craig

Hello Framers,

We are using FM 12 (TCS 5) on Windows 7 PCs.

When we add a product image to the body page, the white background of the
product image masks a portion of the background image. We have tried images
(referenced from a common image folder) of the following types: Adobe
Illustrator (*.ai), Adobe Photoshop (*.psd), *.png, and *.eps.

Even though we have carefully created knockedout images with transparent
backgrounds, we have not been able to avoid the masking effect.
