newbie question from an oldie

2015-03-19 Thread Craig Ede
Excuse the newbie-ness of this question:

I'm involved in producing books that are very much smaller than I'm used to
working with. The toc, lof and lof generated files are very small and can fit
on a single page together. Is there any downside to generating standard toc,
lot, and lof files and then referencing them into an empty document that sits
in the place in the book where these three files would usually sit? I've moved
the actual generated files outside the printed area of the book into a separate
Group that contains other files that track things but never get printed.

This seems to produce a Word-like combination file that contains all the data
from the three generated files. I've chosen the option to retain the source
formatting for the text insets from the generated files.

Q: Is there a downside to this approach that will rear its head later? I
understand that I will have to do multiple generates of the book to ensure the
correct page numbering if the toc-lof-lof file expands.

Thank you.

2008-02-05 Thread Martinek, Carla
Been using Frame since FM 3.0 on Mac back in 1990/91. Don't remember
when I found/first posted to the framers list, but it was a looong
time ago, probably under my maiden name.

Used it on Mac, Win, and Unix at various locations over the years. (Hey,
Adobe -- WE WANT MAC FRAME AGAIN!!!)

Was on first name terms with Jack (forgive the spelling here) Oyarcabal
in Frame TechSupport... "Hi, Jack, it's Carla..." was all it took. I
know I made lots and lots of suggestions back in those early years for
bug fixes and enhancements that later saw light in future releases -- my
favorite way to start a Tech Support call with Jack was "Frame should be
able to do this..." :-) I even wrote up a conversion process back then
for getting PageMaker files into Frame that their TechSupport later
borrowed for their own use.

Helped start the Framemaker User Network Chicago (FUN Chicago) back
in... 92?... with my old manager and a woman whose name I'm now
forgetting (she was blonde) and who was a Sales Engineer for Frame based
here in their Chicago office over by one of the cholocate factories.

Sigh... I'm feeling REALLY old now!

I started using FrameMaker on a Sun 3/50 (black and white screen!) in
Sun OpenLook back in 1988. The company tech writers used Interleaf, but
that was too expensive for us developers who were writing the internal
documentation.

I did not interact with any Frame users group or Usenet group that I can
recall, but I do remember getting help from a Frame employee, Sandy Knox
(I hope I have the name right), on a number of occasions.

Later in the early to mid nineties, I beta-tested FrameMaker 4 or 5 on a
Windows system - worked with one of the QA people at Frame, Susan
Di-Tullio, to get them the feedback.

I only joined the Frame Users group recently, so I am a newbie in that
regard! :)

Amazingly helpful.

You guys have good memories. The address was [EMAIL PROTECTED] I still
have a few messages in my archives from those days, including some from
people at Frame Technology. 1010 Rincon Circle was about 3 blocks from
where I worked. We actually used to be able to walk in the front door and
ask for someone from support to come to the lobby and help us with FM
problems. And they did. What was really nice is that we could understand
what they were saying, and they understood us too. But I digress.

The following email about the change of listowners ought to bring back a few

HERE 'TIS. HEDLEY

Framers,

After three years at the helm, I have decided to step down as
administrator of the Framers list in favor of Brad Anderson
([EMAIL PROTECTED]). I don't want to go into the reasons why (after
all, I could make up just about anything, and you'd have to believe
it). I believe Brad will do just as good a job, and likely much better.

To effect the transition, Brad and I are currently running parallel
framers and framers-digest lists (ie., they have the same postings). I
would like all subscribers to unsubscribe from my list and subscribe to
Brad's. To unsubscribe from my list, send mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
with just the line
   unsubscribe framers
in the body. Do not include a subject line or signature. Substitute
framers-digest for framers as appropriate. If you are unsubscribing
another email address than the one you are using, include it, like so:
   unsubscribe framers [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This should be your EMAIL ADDRESS, not your first name, last name,
nickname, or anything else.

To subscribe to Brad's list, send mail to
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]
with just the line
   subscribe framers
and follow the same guidelines as above.

The lists will continue running in parallel for another month, until the
end of February, and this message will be reposted periodically. After
that time, the list will only run on Brad's site.

I apologize for this inconvenience, but it minimizes disruption, and
will also clean up any dead addresses on the subscriber lists. If you
have any questions or comments, please let me know.

Thank you.

2008-02-04 Thread Grant Hogarth
I started on the list as CGH at frame.com from about Sept 1990 or so...
I think I've used FM on every platform Frame made it for since V2.0
(but then again, I had to)

Me, me, me! I've used FM from v. 3.0 on every platform except
Solaris (Sun OpenLook for me -- GUI was realtime PostScript, like Mac OS
X).

Hi Graeme,

My apologies. I thought you'd been on the list since about the time I
joined but only had messages from you in my own archive for 5 years. But I
do remember your messages about footnotes and endnotes and the fact that
neither Frame Technology nor Adobe has not fixed them in all these years.
Good progress on a lot of things, but we still don't have drag and drop
either.

I wonder how many of us there are still on the list from those "olden" days.
