This program pairs 4 brand new films from Fordham University students (who
had to leave campus Friday March 13 because of the pandemic) with works
previously in distribution. Made between 1964 and 2020 these films
investigate fractious politics, urgent street protests, domestic
contemplation, melancholic memories and economic anxieties.

*LINE-UP:*

– *Estamos Cansados*

Jeff Figuereo, 2020, 4 minutes

A personal documentary about the growing distrust of the Dominican
government by its people. Super 8 footage showcases the Dominican protests
in Washington Heights in November 2019.

– *This is Not Normal*

Sophie Lee, 2020, 6 minutes

A meditation on the uncertainty and absurdity of the pandemic through the
eyes of a college senior.

– *American Onement*

Tim Lee, 2020, 11 minutes

The film calls attention to the continued obliteration of “the American
Dream” via polarization, fundamentalism, commercialism, and plain old
delusion riddled apathy— all of which our duopolistic political party
system fuels and supports.

– *Remnants of Normality*

Leeanna Harisprashad, 2020, 2.5 minutes

This work is a collection of memories of life before social distancing. It
reminisces on moments we took for granted, people we wish we could've known
sooner, and places we long to visit again.

– *My Mis-Education in 3 Graphics*

Mary Filippo, 2020, 3.5 minutes

A chapter on market (economics model of supply and demand) assumptions;
these include the absence of advertising, as if our demand for stuff is
there without it.

– *Who Do You Think You Are*

Mary Filippo, 1986, 10 minutes

A filmmaker investigates her own cigarette smoking habit while wishing she
could make “a film about injustice.”

*Peace Pickets Arrested for Disturbing the Peace*

Leonard M Henny, 1968, 7 minutes

This documentary depicts the preparations for and the development of the
October 1967 non-violent, anti-draft demonstration at the Oakland Induction
Center that led to the arrest of Joan Baez and 20 pacifists.

*Go Go Go*

Marie Menken, 1964, 11.5 minutes

2020-05-15 Thread Mark Street
Hey All,
The take up on this projector is working intermittently. Sometimes it
takes up fine; sometimes it needs a little help at the beginning of the
reel, sometimes it doesn't work at all. I've never worked on projectors
before. How complicated is it to 'repair' it (assuming that is possible)?
I was told it was a belt issue at one point; should I buy and install a new
belt? Tinker? Any illumination much appreciated.

[Frameworks] Kodachrome

2019-04-30 Thread Mark Street
Dear All,
My former teacher and friend Barbara Hammer asked me to finish a film for
her; she gave me the material before she died.  She asked 4 of us to do so;
I'm turning my attention to the project now.

I had a crazy idea of shooting some Kodachrome. Any way to purchase this
outdated stock? Any way of processing it assuming I can find a roll or two?

all the best,

[Frameworks] Films by Lynne Sachs and Mark Street Thursday May 17 Court Tree Collective, Brooklyn

2018-05-13 Thread Mark Street
Thursday, May 17 – Short Films by Mark Street and Lynne Sachs 7 - 9pm

Court Tree Collective 371 Court St, Brooklyn 11231

Since 1992, Lynne and Mark have been showing films together in an attempt
to uncover connections and dissonances, pitting the X against the Y, the
magenta against the green, the hard edged against the ephemeral. At Court
Tree Gallery, they will present 11 short films (including one they made
together) created over the last 25 years. Loose themes and affinities will
unspool, including chimerical traces of their children, women's voices
amplified on the screen, quotidian diary effusions, found footage movies
reimagined, weather as an apocalyptic (bell)weather and finally, the frame
as a shifting, malleable grid. Total running time: 69 min.
Films include:

“Sliding off the Edge of the World” by Mark Street, 7 min. 2000.
Time slows down and silence envelops a series of quotidian moments snatched
from transience. The frameline is always moving, and images are stacked
like nesting dolls.

“Same Stream Twice” by Lynne Sachs, 4 min. 2012.
Our first daughterʼs name is Maya. In 2001, I photographed her at six years
old. Eleven years later, I pulled out my camera once again to film her –
different but somehow the same.

“And Then We Marched” by Lynne Sachs, 3 min. 2017.
Sachs shoots film of the 2017 Women's March in Washington and intercuts
this footage with films of Suffragists and 1970s advocates for the Equal

“Carolee, Barbara & Gunvor” by Lynne Sachs, 9 minutes 2018
>From 2015 to 2017, Lynne visited with Carolee Schneemann, Barbara Hammer
and Gunvor Nelson, three multi-faceted artists who have embraced the moving
image throughout their lives.

“Vera Drake, Drowning” by Mark Street, 4 min. 2012
A theatrical trailer buried in the garden for several years. The vagaries
of nature (snow, rain, ice, sun) yield a scrupulous document of the passing
of time.

“Zoom” by Mark Street, 6 min. 2018
Painting and bleaching a Dutch/French 35mm film to divulge haunted layers
of psychological complexity.

“After Synchromy” by Mark Street, 6 min. 2015
An homage and reimagining of Norman McLaren's 1971 film leavened by a
cascade of daily quotidian still photography.

“Winterwheat” by Mark Street, 7 min. 1989
>From an educational film about the farming cycle; a red sky vision emerges
from between the tractor blades.

“Drift and Bough” by Lynne Sachs, 7 min. 2014
Lynne spent a morning in Central Park shooting film in the snow. The stark
black lines of the trees against the whiteness created the sensation of a
painter’s chiaroscuro.

“Starfish Aorta Colossus” by Lynne Sachs, 5 min. 2015
Poetry watches film. Film reads poetry. Paolo Javier’s text is a catalyst
for Lynne to journey through twenty-five years of shooting film.

“The X Y Chromosome Project” by Lynne Sachs and Mark Street, 11 min. 2007
Lynne and Mark use a split screen to create a diptych that functions both
as a boxing match and a pas de deux.

Street and Sachs have been making films individually and collaboratively
for over 30 years, which is also the length of their relationship as a
couple.

*The XY Chromosome Project* follows the career paths of Lynne Sachs and
Mark Street. To follow this path is like tracing the blueprint on devotion.
Working both together and individually for the past 30 years, each has
carved out their own niche without the obvious influences of being married.
They part ways to be left alone to their own creations. It is the respect
for the other's work that bonds them. Left alone, their work could not be
more different. Lynne's work is cerebral and emotional. As seen in her full
length films *Your Day is My Night*

She collages the art of storytelling by layering stunning visuals while
swimming between reality and performance. Her films are remarkable. Mark is
the experimental film hero, a pioneer in film manipulation, an encyclopedia
in the world of experimental films. His film work is solely connected to
what is possible in the organics of film manipulation. They celebrate
experimentation in its truest form. Yet both come down on the same line
when it matters most. The line of captivation which as any artist knows is
the hardest to achieve. In 2010, they created *The XY Chromosome Project*

an array of collaborative installations, performances, and two-dimensional
art works. In addition to exhibiting their collages on the walls of the

In 2017, Lynne embraced her life-long love of collage during an artist
residency at Beta Local, an art center in San Juan, Puerto Rico dedicated
to supporting and promoting aesthetic thought and practice. While there,
Lynne worked with San Juan artists who shared images torn from magazines or
newspapers, found in a drawer, a family album or in the trash -- personal,
commercial and ephemeral objects. Lynne then proceeded to “collaborate”
with these artists by integrating both the treasures and the trash from
their lives into her collages.

Morning Addition is a series of collages Mark has been working on since
2015. He uses images from newspapers, old books, Farmers’ Almanacs, paper
shooting targets and original photographs to create strange and uncanny
combinations. What arrives on the doorstep or is found on the street mixes
together to distill quotidian ephemera down to an unanticipated broth.

LABOR LOST AND FOUND

Filmmakers present for screenings (Franju as ghost).

*Looking at what we all do for some half of our waking adult life is always
revealing. Once this particular level of inquiry begins it can address a
myriad of issues including class disparity, existential questions and
whether dreams are deferred or denied. Through interviews, observational
vignettes, historical tracings these films investigate the world of work in
unexpected and invigorating ways. *

Bring me my boots and shoes
You can hang back or fight your best on the frontline

<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocBgEJSUPdI=10>

*Oiltowns* traces boom and bust cycles in and around the town of Williston,
North Dakota. Interviews with oil workers, longtime residents, ranchers and
the homeless focus on changes that have animated the small town. Pump jacks
dig rhythmically on desolate highways, trucks lumber on small roads, gas
flares in the distance, new homes are built at breakneck speed, abandoned
RVs seem to rust before our eyes. A Turtle Mountain Native American talks
about the rampant prostitution and drug use that has burgeoned as a result
of itinerant workers arriving with lots of money to spend. Three drunk men
banter in front of a trailer they share as the sun goes down. A former
Chicago policeman sells hot dogs from a stand from 10AM to 10 PM every day
alongside a highway teeming with oil trucks.

*The Washing Society*
*7 min. excerpt* by Lizzie Olesker & Lynne Sachs, 2018

When you drop off a bag of dirty laundry, who’s doing the washing and
folding? This film brings you into New York City laundromats and the
experiences of the people who work there. With a title inspired by the 1881
organization of African-American laundresses, *The Washing Society*
investigates the intersection of history, underpaid work, immigration, and
the sheer math of doing laundry.
Catch a sneak work-in-progress preview of part of our movie!

*Blood of the Beasts*20 minutes by Georges Franju, 1949

A shocking observational portrait of Paris *abbatoirs. *“George Franju’s
1949 film Le Sang Des Bêtes is one of the most beautiful and horrifying
movies ever made. Filmed in the backstreets of Paris, Franju contrasts
bucolic scenes of fog-shrouded streets, canals, deserted junkyards and
children playing, with the nightmarish events taking place within two
slaughterhouses. Marcel Fradetal’s stunning black and white cinematography
turns the horrific into a brutal kind of poetry that if it had been shot in
color would be unbearable.” -Dangerous Minds

2017-03-28 Thread Mark Street
Hey all,
I try to avoid these 'pick your brain' queries, but I'm stymied. Here goes:

Filmmaker/Professors: anyone know of an anthology (or just a couple of)
experimental animation scripts? All I'm finding in terms of animation
scripts is more conventional fare. Looking to share some with my students.

[Frameworks] 16mm projector rental May 1

Hey All,
Looking to rent a 16mm projector for a performance live music event at DCTV

I'd like it to be able to run at silent (or variable) speed. I'd also like
it to have a variable zoom lens.

[Frameworks] copying 35 mm frames using a slide duplicator

2017-01-04 Thread Mark Street
Hey DIY brothers and sisters,

I have been working on some hand painted and distressed 35mm film. I was
hoping to click off single exposures of each frame on my DSLR. Thought I'd
use a slide duplicator, but the one's I've encounters only accept mounted
slides what I hope to do is slide the film through frame by frame.
Any models you'd recommend, or an alternate methodology I'm not seeing?

Sincerely,

I can't imagine a screening more 'educational' (and edifying and inspiring)

[Frameworks] A Roll For Peter

2016-07-13 Thread Mark Street
Like so many in our community, we're devastated by Peter Hutton's death,
and would like to join together in commemorating his influence. Peter
invited us to discover a new way of looking; his films and his aesthetic
ethos were suggestions and inspirations.

Please consider joining us in a group project that we think honors Peter's
memory. Here's how it works: shoot a 100 foot roll of black and white
reversal film, process it, and send the entire (or a stand-alone portion of
the) roll to us by *October 1, 2016*. We'll string them together with
black leader between the contributions, and screen them along with a couple
of Peter's films at a New York venue TBD.

Maybe you were his student, his colleague, a friend, or a filmmaker who
finds his work inspiring. Maybe you haven't shot film for many years; maybe
you've NEVER shot film this is your opportunity to try something new.
Photographing a single, silent roll (always the building block for Peter's
work) should allow us each to think about Peter and his work in solitude,
and then bring the results together in concert with our community.

Share this if you'd like to.

Sincerely,

Jenn Reeves & Mark Street

Please send your roll (100 feet or less), clearly labeled with your name,
address and contact information, by *October 1, 2016* to the following
address:

Mark Street

Visual Arts LL423

 Fordham College Lincoln Center

113 W 60th St

New York, New York 10023

*A couple details:*

Your film belongs to you and will be returned after the screening(s).

If you would like to, you can indicate with an X or a hole punch the first
frame and last frame of your film contribution. In that case we will cut
where you have designated and splice the head and tail of your contribution
to the black leader that separates the rolls.

*Mark Street, Filmmaker coming in from New York,* has been making films,
videos and installations for 30 years. His work has moved from tactile,
abstract explorations of 16mm film to essays on the urban experience to
improvised feature length narratives. He works in the tradition of street
photography, recording images almost every day, exploring the tension
between improvisation and structure. He has shown at places like the Museum
of Modern Art in New York as well as venues such as a former strip club in
New Orleans called the Pussycat Cavern.

The artist will be present. Curated by Klaus W. Eisenlohr

Hand Processing 16mm black and white film
Materials for processing film as negative:

 Kodak D-76 Developer (powder)
Kodak Rapid Fixer with Hardener (do not mix in hardener if you plan to
 tint and tone film)
2 - 4 litre photographic chemical storage containers
 1 Flat-top thermometer
 1 Measuring graduate
4 - large 10 litre pails (purchase paint mixing pails from Home Depot)
 1 Funnel
 1 Pair rubber gloves
 1 Face mask
 1 Pair scissors
1 Length of string and clothes pegs
 1 Pair goggles
 1 Photographers loupe
1 Watch that glows in the dark

You should process film in a room that has running water. The room should
also have good ventilation. You will need complete darkness to process the
film so the room also needs to be light tight. Bathrooms work best and most
have a ceiling fan. If your bathroom has a window you can cover it with
black foam core or any material that will prevent light from leaking in.
Turn lights off and wait a few minutes and let your eyes adjust to the
darkness. If you see your hands in front of your face it is not dark
 enough.

Caution: Remember you are working with chemicals so be careful and use
goggles, rubber gloves and process the film in a well ventilated room.

 Step by Step Instructions

 To develop film as negative:

 1. Pre-mix chemicals using Kodak’s instructions on packaging. Store
chemicals in proper photographic storage containers. Label the containers
with contents and date of mixing. I usually replace developer after 1000’
of 16 film or after it has sat for more than two months. Fixer lasts longer
so check mixing instructions for how long to store chemicals.

 2. I usually use warm water to mix the chemicals so I allow the chemicals
to sit until they get to room temperature before I start to process film.
Kodak recommends processing the film in developer that is between 20 and 24
degrees Celsius temperature. The warmer the water the shorter the develop
 time.

 3. Place side by side on the floor or in tub your 4 pails. Pour into the
first pail the Kodak Developer then fill the pail directly beside it with
water. In the third pail pour in the Rapid Fixer and fill the fourth pail
 with water.

 4. Double check that your room is light tight, if not fix light leaks
 before processing film.

 5. If room is completely dark then take your roll of exposed 16mm film out
of its film can. Unravel in your hand the amount of film you wish to
process. The less you process at a time the cleaner your results will be
(less scratches and unprocessed areas). Place film that you will not be
processing back into film can and secure it so light does not expose it
when you turn the lights back on.

 6. Take the film that is in your hand and dunk it into the D-76 developer,
continuously agitate the film during processing. I usually process black
and white film for 3.5 minutes in D-76 chemicals but I recommend doing your
own tests as well because this also depends on how you expose your film in
 camera.

 7. At the 3.5 minute point take film out of Developer and dunk in water
and rinse film, agitate film in water for 2 minutes.

 8. At 2 minute point pull film out of water and dunk in Rapid Fixer.
Agitate the film in the Fixer for 4 to 6 minutes.

 9. After the film has been fixed pull it out and place it in the final
water rinse. At this point you can turn the lights back on. I usually rinse
the film for at least 20 minutes, replenishing the water a couple times.

 10. After rinsing hang the film up on a string to dry.

 11. After the film has completely dried find tail end and roll back onto
 spool/core.

 12. Exposure times using G-3 Morse Tank and D-76 Developer

Developer 8 minutes: 8 passes through tank (1 pass would be transferring
entire roll from one reel to the other), each pass should take about a
 minute.

Rinse in water 6 minutes: I like to really rinse my film off well so that
my chemicals last longer. I fill the tank up with fresh water between each
full cycle pass (full cycle pass would be transferring the entire roll of
film from one reel to the other and then back again to first reel). I do
this three times, each full cycle taking 2 minutes in total depending on
 how fast you turn handle.

Fix in Kodak Rapid fixer 12 minutes: 12 passes through tank (1 pass would
be transferring entire roll from one reel to the other), each pass should
 take about a minute.

Final Rinse in water 25 minutes: Rinse film off well because any fix left
on film will leave white marks behind. I fill the tank up with fresh water
between each full cycle pass (full cycle pass would

[Frameworks] Video Projectors, Loops, Thumbdrives

2014-03-08 Thread Mark Street
Hey Sisters and Brothers,
I'm installing a three channel video installation now, and have forgotten
all I once knew about getting projectors to loop images. Any help would be
much appreciated.

In the past, I had a hard time determining which projectors would accept
which thumbdrives, and which files... I want three fairly short loops to
play continuously. But some thumbdrives work, some FILES work (and more
importantly, some don't) and I ended up chasing my tail. At present I'm
just using DVD players.

I'm remembering now: I had to convert my short loops to MPEG1 in order for
the projector to read them, but when I did so the compression was awful, so
better from a DVD

[Frameworks] Disney Paris imposter

2014-03-06 Thread Mark Street
Does anyone know the name of a film (Dutch?) in which a woman impersonated
a Disney character in the parking lot of Paris Disneyland, I think it was
Snow White. She greeted children, posed for pictures and the like until
security guards approached and said she wasn't the 'real' Snow White. She
argued: How can someone be a 'real' fantasy character, and she was
escorted off the grounds.

I saw it at EMAF about 5 years ago.

[Frameworks] Ooops. Ektachrome. Divorce.

Hi Brothers and Sisters,
I'm a bit out of the loop on what stocks are discontinued, and just shot my
wife's last roll of 16mm Ektachrome reversal (which was processed
beautifully by Pac Labs here in NYC, incidentally).
Any alternative to this stock so that I can replace this roll? Ebay?
Fuji? Anyone out there holding and willing to sell?
She's not on frameworks so with your help I can pull this off.
Otherwise it's a move to the Super 8 motel for me.

[Frameworks] Hasta Nunca at Union Docs 2.2.13

2013-01-25 Thread Mark Street
Hey All,

My new feature *Hasta Nunca* (shot in Uruguay) will be at Union Docs in NYC
Saturday February 2. As always at Union Docs, the screening will be
followed by a spirited conversation. Details on the film are on the link,
and also below.

http://www.uniondocs.org/2013-02-02-hasta-nunca/

Hope to see you there!

Mark Street
www.markstreetfilms.com

*Hasta Nunca *follows MARIO LIGETTI, a middle aged hipster DJ who
produces an underground radio show in Montevideo, Uruguay. On his
show Secrets and Stories he invites listeners to share their intimate
thoughts with him and a live radio audience. Mario re-negotiates his
public and private personas during the course of the film and enters
into an extra marital affair with JULIA, a divorcee searching for a
new artistic spark.
In this international production (USA, Uruguay) each call in to the
show was written and performed by local actors. Topics addressed in
telephone conversations: lingering effects of the military
dictatorship in Uruguay, the difficulty of obtaining an -illegal-
abortion and varied identity issues. Ligetti’s show is a modern
rollicking *Miss Lonelyhearts*, with its host increasingly suffocated by
the personal predicaments of his listeners.
Shot in cinéma vérité style, *Hasta Nunca *reveals Montevideo as a
strong background character in the film’s visual landscape. Callers’
voices on the radio provide an acoustic counterpoint for an
observational investigation of this ramshackle port city which retains
the architectural vestiges of its colonial past.

[Frameworks] Mark Street Films-- National Gallery of Art in DC July 21

2012-07-15 Thread Mark Street
Hey All,
The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC is showing some films of mine
July 21-- information below.

http://www.nga.gov/programs/film/aonstreet.shtm

I'm particularly thrilled to be previewing my new feature film, Hasta Nunca
(See You Never). Details on that film are below, along with a short trailer

‘Hasta Nunca’ follows Mario Ligetti, a middle-aged DJ in Montevideo,
Uruguay whose call-in radio show exposes the city’s “Secrets and Stories.”
As Mario’s life becomes more entangled with that of his callers and
listeners, his public and private personas are blurred and the intimate
nuances of a city and its residents are revealed.

The film is the product of a close collaboration between North American
filmmaker Mark Street and an Uruguayan cast and crew, led by producer Uzi
Sabah and lead actor Rufo Martínez, a real life DJ and television
personality. Shot in cinéma vérité style, ‘Hasta Nunca’ takes a deeper look
at one of South America’s under represented countries, carefully touching
upon local themes like the lingering effectsof the military dictatorship
and the illegality of abortion. The film interweaves documentary and
fiction, scripted narrative and improvisation, and is as much a
portrait of Montevideo
as it is the story of one of its chroniclers.
