Re: [Frameworks] nitrate reels
Dear Mary, The answer is to take it to your nearest archive that can handle nitrate film. Has your local film archive identified the content? In itself, if it's in good condition, nitrate is safe and obviously can last more than a hundred years. What you have might be deemed worthless (if there's other copies in good condition), or it can be one of a kind. See the discovery of SOMETHING GOOD - NEGRO'S KISS from 1896 found last year and now on the LoC National Film Registry. If you need advice of other archives who might be more willing to take it in, please contact me directly. Thank you for mentioning Shirley Clarke already. Three of her features that can be considered avant-garde at least in part: THE CONNECTION, THE COOL WORLD and ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA all feature jazz scores. Consider her work on the Loop films she did for the 1958 Brussels World Fair, where they refused to allow her to use jazz scores. Since she wasn't allowed, she *cut* them as if they were jazz pieces. The mandate of AMIA is very simple and right up front at www.amianet.com -- to foster cooperation (ie. friendship) to further the cause of preservation and restoration. And thanks about BLESS and KOS! Chicago's Ross Lipman had the most to do with it. (With Billy and Charles of course!) Dear Michael, A lot of people do go on to work at those two archives and elsewhere, but honestly, I usually get to meet the students after they get jobs, so you might want to get the information from the school itself. The other school that has that preservation/curation dual study is NYU's MIAP program. I would agree with Dave except for the description of bullet-proof. Yes, it most likely would be fair use and would stand up in court. But to be bulletproof, that would entail hiring a lawyer like Michael Donaldson of Donaldson + Callif (Los Angeles) or J.Stephen Sheppard of Cowan DeBaets Abrahams and Sheppard (New York) to vet your Fair Use and from that, to get E insurance to back up the claim. I think Continental and Axis were the cheapest. But that's about $10,000 to $15,000, so if it's only one or two clips, it's cheaper to pay for rights if you want to be bulletproof without the E Best regards, Dennis Doros Milestone Film & Video PO Box 128 / Harrington Park, NJ 07640 Phone: +1 201-767-3117 / Email: milefi...@gmail.com www.milestone.film JOIN OUR MAILING LIST TODAY! <http://milestonefilms.us3.list-manage1.com/subscribe/post?u=4a0b9e434a9f3e8603c29806e=f30d1906e2> Support us on Facebook <http://www.facebook.com/pages/Milestone-Film/22348485426> and Twitter <https://twitter.com/#!/MilestoneFilms>! Dear Abigail, That's not true --MGM never got it right on this set of titles from UA. In 1936, UA's Art Cinema (Joe Schenck's productions) was dissolved with half of the films being transferred to Mary Pickford. The rights to Evangeline now belong to the Mary Pickford Foundation. (My company, Milestone, brought it out on DVD some years ago but the rights have reverted to MPF.) You can find them on the web with their contact info. As a kid I saw a quick sketch artist do this sort of thing in a church setting, so it probably predates photography. Re: [Frameworks] Ethnographic films / studies of The Other
There's also many more considerations in this question as we have found out over the years. As Andy points out, the Martin and Osa Johnson theatrical films have some fairly racist elements to them. We released SIMBA as the most inoffensive (and their most famous) film and worked with experts of the area to see what they thought. Most times when we release these documentaries/docudramas (and we have a lot of them in our Age of Exploration series that is in its 25th year), it's that many of these films are seen now -- even if they have white directors -- as literally home movies. There are the great grandfathers, grand aunts that they have only heard about or seen in pictures up on the screen. Over the years, we've had hundreds of these phone calls from the children who are very thankful. That doesn't excuse any racism -- though some should be seen in context of the time they were made, we should also consider that they were racist even back then -- but it does add a layer. The second concept is that in these films, there are cultural artifacts that are very valuable to their descendants. Some of the dances, the rituals, the art have been lost to time and modernization while some were outlawed. You can't understand them as well in photographs or writings from the time. We have a film CHANG that a film historian insisted it was racist. When I explained that it's a national treasure of Thailand (at the time, this was 1994 or so) and that the King played it every year on television since it was so popular, the historian declared that the people of Thailand obviously didn't understand racism! The third and most important concept is that some of these directors were as modern as we are and as in love and respectful of the cultures and people. It's always a mistake to consider previous generations as more primitive or less socially aware. (We're not doing so great with race in America these days either.) So! although the Martin and Osa theatrical films did have some typical old tribesmen trying to play a phonograph or open a bottle of beer (Flaherty started this with Nanook) because that's what they thought the American public wanted, it's little known that they also had at least six different version of the films and their scientific versions that they did for the American Museum of Natural History are incredible records of lost tribes and rituals. You can see the love they have for the African tribes in these films and in their huge number of photographs (many of their trips were sponsored by George Eastman and therefore, Kodak). I have the George Eastman House laserdisc with about 6000 of their photos and they are incredibly moving. So, there are many racist films by white directors over the history of cinema (Adam Sandler and the Navahos, just last week!) but I do think that they need to be evaluated not only by film historians but also members of the tribe, people who know the cultures extremely well, etc. We really try to work with the tribes and people involved in these films before we release to make sure we are not doing anything that would displease their communities, and they always find something that we can do to be more respectful in our release. Another foundational film from this era is Grass, by Merian Cooper who went on to make King Kong. Grass is not a cliched film either, for that matter. (Not that these films are free of problems.) For more explicitly egregious examples from this era, I would look at the films of Martin and Osa Johnson, such as Borneo. One of their films is imported directly (perhaps in full, I'm not sure) into Ken Jacobs' Star Spangled to Death, which is where I learned about them. Important to note here that Martin and Osa currently have a clothing store chain named after them here in the U.S. The legacy continues. Re: [Frameworks] What are the 3 Essential Films that you would show Artists on their first foray into the Moving Image Realm ?
There are no three possible to represent the entire world of experimental film. But for women, you might want to start with Suspense by Lois Weber and Philip Smalley. It's extremely experimental for the year it was made. And with Shirley Clarke, having seen all of them now about two dozen times each over the past six years, I know that BRIDGES-GO-ROUND is everybody's favorite but I would say MOMENT IN LOVE is mine. Seeing her outtakes and notebooks, it's the one she worked the hardest to create and I love the work of choreographer Anna Sokolow. Also, we are just starting to show D. A. Pennebaker and Shirley Clarke's BRUSSELS LOOP films (there were also four or five other filmmakers involved) and they are really incredible up on the screen. But especially for artists, it's almost impossible not to include the best of experimental film without my favorite, which is BEGONE DULL CARE by Norman McLaren (and Evelyn Lambert) and it's tough to show him without the best of Len Lye. Also in mind with artists, and for more collaborations between man and a woman, you can't really go wrong with Alexeieff and Parker pin animation. Re: [Frameworks] 4k theater conversion
Dear Matt, You might want to also ask the Art House Convergence listserv http://www.arthouseconvergence.org/resources/ since almost everybody on that list has either converted or about to. There's also a lot of the companies that do the conversions (Boston Light and Sound, Cardinal) on the listserv willing to give free advice. You also should definitely talk to the lovely folks at NYSCA's Electronic Media and Film department. New York State's Regional Economic Development office and NYSCA with their Digital Film Projector Conversion Program have been leading the way to helping theaters and non-profits convert to digital. There's a brief outline of it here http://regionalcouncils.ny.gov/assets/documents/workshops/CouncilontheArts2013.pdf in their PDF. I think it's the only program like it in the country. Re: [Frameworks] Best quality 16mm film digitizing
Lawrence, The first and foremost thing is that the Association of Moving Image Archivists website has a brand-new Supplier Directory http://www.amianet.org/sites/all/files/Supplier%20Diretory%20-%202014.03.pdf that lists many of the resources anyone needs for the preservation of your materials. It's being updated constantly. Secondly, you should have a plan for what you are doing. If you are thinking preservation, you have to do 2K or 4K scanning rather than HD transfers. You should ask for copies of the digital DPX files in both the raw scan and fixed scans if you are doing any timing or cleanup. Then you should also have them deliver the final uncompressed or FinalCut Pro files for your use. The files should be given to you on both hard drive and LTO-6 tape (if you can get it -- if not, LTO5 would be fine.) They should both be migrated every four or five years. For my hard drives, I always buy a very large drive (usually 8TB to 12TB) for one or two films since you will want a mirror raid on it. For extremely expensive projects, I put them on two hard drives. Yes, it sound very OCD, but this is about preservation and redundancy, not about expediency. As for a film at 18fps. You should first scan it at 24p and keep that raw scan. If you are doing any dust and scratch removal, it has to also be done at 24p and be kept. That will be your preservation master. Then, the lab can create a 18fps umcompressed or FCP file and synch it to sound. I'm working with Jack Rizzo's Metro Post now and they are doing a very good job. I've worked with ColorLab many times and I trust them implicitly as well. It would also be a matter of doing your research and seeing what the best transfer would be for your material. I always ask what scanners and software they will be using and read the recent papers that are coming out of the new research on scanners, etc. Best regards, Dennis Doros Milestone Film Video PO Box 128 / Harrington Park, NJ 07640 Phone: 201-767-3117 / Fax: 201-767-3035 / Email: milefi...@gmail.com Visit our main website! www.milestonefilms.com Visit our new websites! www.mspresents.com, www.portraitofjason.com, www.shirleyclarkefilms.com, To see or download our 2014 Video Catalog, click here http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0150/7896/files/2014MilestoneVideoCatalog.pdf?75 ! I would like to know what is the best quality transfer I should be looking for. I have a quote from ColorLab in Rockville, MD and another one from Metro Post. Metro Post is cheaper but it is not telecine (just says “hi-def film scan”). So before I go any further I thought that I should ask for suggestions from all of the great people here. These are all finished films in good shape (unfortunately the original negatives and Mag sound were thrown out by WRS). I don’t want to say that cost is no issue but if I am going to preserve these films I’d rather end up with the best quality, even if I need to space it out over time due to cost. Also, one of the films runs at 18fps (sound is on separate tape). Is this an issue? I really appreciate any suggestions or feedback. Thanks! Hi, Lourdes, It really depends on location, money and how much care you want. On the boutique scale, I assume Film Technology still does 16mm. You can start with my friend Zac Fink at filmtech...@earthlink.net. They did the 16mm fine grain on KILLER OF SHEEP before they blew it up to 35mm. You also might want to try Fotokem. Re: [Frameworks] What to do with one roll of nitrate film?
Nitrate film can be dangerous, but if the film is in good condition, the dangers that the press talk about are greatly exaggerated. There is a great deal of nitrate film that has lasted over 100 years. If the reel of film looks like a solid hockey puck, is glue like or there's a great deal of dust (from the film, not the can), than there is reason for concern. Otherwise, if it looks like film, then it's a good chance it can last another 100 years under proper storage conditions. In New York, the best place to take film is to the Anthology Film Archives (Andrew Lampert, though he's only working part time these days while making his own films), the Museum of Modern Art (Katie Trainor is the head of the film vaults) and the George Eastman House (Jared Case) in Rochester. Re: [Frameworks] What to do with one roll of nitrate film?
If the film looks to be in good shape, there is nothing to worry about. (My first reel of nitrate I took on the bus to NYC.) But I would call up the archives first, see who wants it, and arrange on where to meet there. As for nitrate films catching fire in projection booths, fire was actually the biggest concern. I'm sure the fumes aren't healthy, but inhaling smoke is never good for your health. And for anyone who wants to play mad scientist, professional ping pong balls are STILL made out of the same material as nitrate film. A fun trick archivists like to play is to hold the ball with long steel tongs, light it on fire, dunk it in a vial of water and show it burning underwater. OF COURSE, you need the proper equipment for this and probably not at home.
