I booted into single user mode (running FreeBSD 8 RC2) and did:
# dd if=/dev/ad8 of=/dev/ad8 bs=1024k
After waiting a few hours the command completed without problem (ad8 is the
HDD that has FreeBSD). After that I got the following:
# reboot
reboot: device not configured
# ls
(ad8 is the

I have a new Exabyte VXA-320, I show it in dmesg as sa0.

I'm booting to the fixit cdrom of 4.11 - I think it is disc2
of the iso images. If I try to do a fixit mode remote command
with ssh from the serial console (boot -h) I get
cannot open /dev/tty: Device not configured
If I do the same thing from the vga / keyboard console
it doesn't hang

Not so long ago upgraded from 4.9-RELEASE to 5.3-RELEASE

But when I run mtx -f /dev/sa0 inquiry to test the loader I get the
following:
cannot open SCSI device '/dev/sa0' - Device not configured. The tape unit
is powered and all slots have been loaded with tapes.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's often helpful to paste your dmesg into your question with problems

Hmmm.Have you checked dmesg to make sure the system even sees it?

4.7-RELEASE.
