Re: No mouse in X, Dell Inspiron 5150
the new Nvidia package and my current XF86Config section for the mouse looks like this: Section InputDevice Identifier Mouse1 Driver mouse Option ProtocolPS/2 Option Device /dev/sysmouse I think Protocol should be Auto if you're going to use /dev/sysmouse as the Device. Of course, moused(8) needs to run for this to work. Once again the mouse was not detected during a /stand/sysinstall configuration attempt either. Please check your dmesg(8) to see if the system recognizes it. I'm not familiar with your laptop, but I think that those built-in mice in laptops should come up just like a normal ps/2 connected mouse. In this case you might want to disable moused(8) in /etc/rc.conf and instead start it from the console to get more verbose output. Try to runn it with moused -d -f -p /dev/psm0 -t ps/2 Hopefully moused(8) spits out some error messages which might help do diagnose the problem further. Re: Not needing the console for a system reload
Is there a way to give a shutdown now; use /bin/sh; exit command from the command line if I'm logged in remotely? Or do I really need to use reboot and go through the whole hardware reinitialization? I don't think this is possible. The reason is (if I understand things correctly) that if you're in single user mode, the network isn't started, so there's no way of accessing the machine through ssh, rlogin or something similar. I think you're best off if you hook up a serial console to your machine and remotely access that console. There are commercial solutions for this but any low-end PC will do. I assume you run moused(8) with something like moused_flags=-p /dev/psm0 -t auto in your /etc/rc.conf . If so, does the mouse work on the console? If not, you might want to read psm(4). I had to add hint.psm.0.flags=0x100 to /boot/device.hints . Note that this is not availeable in FreeBSD 4.x but instead you will need to add those flags to your kernel config. Find a line that says device psm0 at atkbdc? irq 12 and make it device psm0 at atkbdc? irq 12 flags 0x100 Hope this helps, it worked for me. Re: [OT] Configuration file parsing
Thank you all for your input, I really appreciate it. Somebody said that I would be fine (when using GPL-licensed stuff) as long as I provide the sources to people who use the application. I guess providing the source within the company is not a problem, however I thought it would be easier to use BSD-style licensed stuff. Re: Monitor's picture position
I see the same symptoms on my Desktop. When I change from Windows to FreeBSD, the picture moves quite a bit. I seriously doubt that this is a FreeBSD or Windows problem but I rather think it's something with the graphic card. Not with the hardware but with the configuration. Maybe you want to check the settings for 'HorizSync' and 'VertRefresh' in the monitor section in your XFree config file. As an alternative you could also just adjust Windows' settings, I think the only important thing is that the settings are the same. I use a TFT display and I never tested what I suggested. I'm lazy so I just hit the 'Automatic Adjustment'-button on the display ;-) Phil. Re: Booting without keyboard.
I've read (although never actually seen myself - so take this with as large a grain of salt as you like) that hotplugging PS/2 peripherals can damage the port you're plugging them into, so I'd be wary about doing this. This is what I've heard, too, but I've never seen a PS/2 port being damaged from 'hot plugging' either. However, I've seen it quite a few times that unplugging and replugging the mouse or the keyboard leaves the device not working afterwards. I've seen this under FreeBSD as well as under (I hate to admit it, but it's the PC at work) Windows NT4 and 2000. I've read a magazine article once which said that this is not the OS's responsibility but the hardware (keyboard or mouse) itself crashing. So regardless if hot-plugging the keyboard works or not, if you plan to do this several times a day, you might want to thing about getting a KVM switch. RE: Installation freezes
I had some similar issues w/ an old Compaq Armada running at 150MHz. However, cpu speed is not the problem here but you probably do not have enough RAM installed. To verify that, try to install again. During the time the installation is running, go to the second (I belive) console and watch the output. If you see notices of processes being killed, and if the process being killed is init, then you simply should add some RAM to your machine. Or install FreeBSD 4.8, worked fine for me. When I upgraded from 16MB to 32MB, my problems were solved and I was able to install FreeBSD 5.1. Are you aware that this question is almost like 'What's better, Linux or FreeBSD?' ;-) To give some hints in reply to your question: If you want to learn SQL, then you should probably use PostgreSQL as it's SQL functionality fully implements the ANSI SQL-92 standard. If you just want to set up a little home database to play around with you should probably use mySQL as you will find more information on google/the internet. AW: installing php3-3.0.18_1: mysql option problem
It seems to me that PHP is trying to build the mySQL library and cannot find the mySQL files. Are you going to use mySQL? When I build PHP the first time I forgot that the mySQL support was enabled by default (only PHP Versions 3.xx and 4.xx ). Disable the mySQL support by using '--without-mysql'. If you are going to use mySQL, you should try to provide PHP the path to the mySQL sources. Check the PHP docs on how to do that. -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Auftrag von admin Gesendet: Donnerstag, 17.
