Hey Henrik,

This printer prints nearly perfectly with apsfilter and regular, base, lpd/lpr
installed. The only problem is the margins, and I can fix that for the most
part. I think it's a problem with cups, personally, but I never see anything
interesting from debug2, but I'll try again. I'll post tomorrow or the next
day.

Thanks.

Just wondering - why do you want to use CUPS?

I did exactly the same thing as you - installed it because it would be 'easy to use'
then spent a fortnight configuring it.

CUPS in my experience is one of the very few UNIX programs that breaks after a while -
everything else might be a bit tricky to configure, but once it works, it keeps
working.
CUPS randomly decided to throw away jobs, until I threw *it* away in disgust.

ESR seems to agree (NB: I am in no way a fan of him, but the article struck a few
chords)

http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/cups-horror.html

Despite all this I am still thinking of trying to reinstall it this week - I don't know
why...

First time CUPS user, config problems?

2004-07-17 Thread Eric Crist
Hello list.

I'm trying to use CUPS for the first time, with all the good things I've
heard/read about it on this list. I'm mainly trying to use it as I've got an
OfficeJet G85 that I've never used with FreeBSD and linuxprinting.org has a
'mostly' working driver.

Here's what I've done thus far:

I've installed CUPS, and have a running daemon. I can login and install
printers. I've downloaded the recommended the correct .ppd file according to
linuxprinting.org, and tried installing the foomatic scripts it says I need.

When I try to print a test page, I get no output what-so-ever and no
indication on the printer anything has even happened.

I don't know where the CUPS logfile would be, so I can't read that.

Anyone have any ideas?

I also have a Brother HL-1440 that I've gotten working with apsfilter and lpd
(it's a remote printer off a hardware printserver), but I'd like to get it
working in CUPS, as it seems much easier to configure margins and such.

Thanks for your help!

Cups installs /usr/local/bin/lp and /usr/local/bin/lpr and leaves
/usr/bin/lp and /usr/bin/lpr in place. Back these up, symlink the cups
versions into their places and try again.

If you want to verify you have a properly running Cups before you do
this, use the web interface (http://localhost:631) to print a test page.
It ought to work.

Hey Peter,

I tried the web interface, and that's what's not printing test pages. Do I
need to move these execs before I try to print a test page?

Also, CUPS seems to have munged up my other printer installations pretty

Not so good - I generally find this works even when the /usr/bin
binaries are still there.

Probably because it overwrites /etc/printcap

Have you tried testing cups by using the cups binaries on the command
line specifying the full path?

#/usr/local/bin/lpr /etc/hosts
should print. If it doesn't, you might get a useful error message.

Hi,
I hope this would work for you.. I have recently
installed my printer and be able to print successfully
using CUPS and gimp-print drivers.

What I did was:

1. Install the latest cups printing daemon and
gimp-print or whatever port you will need to drive
your printer(I don't know if you still need those
drivers though) some printers doesn't need one
In my case I've installed cups-base-1.1.20.0

2. cd to /usr/local/etc/rc.d then
 'cp cups.sh.sample cups.sh'

3. execute 'cups.sh start'(also, the next time you
boot, you will see that cups daemon will automatically
be started)

4. go to http://localhost:631/admin then try the web
interface configuration of cups.

That's it!

Hello list.
I'm trying to use CUPS for the first time, with all the good things
I've heard/read about it on this list. I'm mainly trying to use it as
I've got an OfficeJet G85 that I've never used with FreeBSD and
linuxprinting.org has a 'mostly' working driver.

Here's what I've done thus far:
I've installed CUPS, and have a running daemon. I can login and
install printers. I've downloaded the recommended the correct .ppd
file according to linuxprinting.org, and tried installing the foomatic
scripts it says I need.
When I try to print a test page, I get no output what-so-ever and no
indication on the printer anything has even happened.

I don't know where the CUPS logfile would be, so I can't read that.
Anyone have any ideas?

Cups installs /usr/local/bin/lp and /usr/local/bin/lpr and leaves
/usr/bin/lp and /usr/bin/lpr in place. Back these up, symlink the cups
versions into their places and try again.
And for a next world build and/or CUPS install, put in /etc/make.conf
NO_LPR=yes
CUPS_OVERWRITE_BASE=yes

If I'm not mistaken, cups does install lpr and lprm and lpq . but
I believe they have the following names

lpr.cups
lprm.cups
lpq.cups

In the past I've renamed the original files that were there already:

mv lpr lpr-ORIG
mv lprm lprm-ORIG
mv lpq lpq-ORIG

Then I create the symlinks so any programs looking for the original
names, and alot do, find the cups version through the re-direction that
occurs via symlinks.

ln -s lpr.cups lpr
ln -s lprm.cups lprm
ln -s lpq.cups lpq

Of course this is done inside the directory where the files reside.

If you want to verify you have a properly running Cups before you do
this, use the web interface (http://localhost:631) to print a test page.
 It ought to work.

 Peter.

  Hey Peter,

I tried the web interface, and that's what's not printing test pages. Do
I need to move these execs before I try to print a test page?

Not so good - I generally find this works even when the /usr/bin
 binaries are still there.

Also, CUPS seems to have munged up my other printer installations pretty
badly, and I don't know what to do to get them back.

 Probably because it overwrites /etc/printcap

   I guess I'd rather get

  CUPS working right anyways.

Have you tried testing cups by using the cups binaries on the command
 line specifying the full path?

 #/usr/local/bin/lpr /etc/hosts

should print. If it doesn't, you might get a useful error message.

 Peter.

  Thanks!

If I try that, it shows up in the 'manage jobs: completed jobs:' page, and I
get the following error:

Error:

client-error-not-possible

Thanks

k, I had to create the /var/log/cups directory, now it seems to be logging OK.
I've turned up logging to debug level 2, as you suggest, and it looks greek
to me. I'm still getting the following error in the web interface when I try
to print;

Error:

client-error-not-possible

Any ideas?

Thanks.

First of all, verify that you've got both cups-base, cups-lpr and
cups-pstoraster installed on your system. Do a pkg_info | grep cups to
do this. If all these three packages are installed, please provide the
last, say, 10 lines of your /var/log/cups/error.log.
