I did exactly the same thing as you - installed it because it would be 'easy to use' then spent a fortnight configuring it. CUPS in my experience is one of the very few UNIX programs that breaks after a while - everything else might be a bit tricky to configure, but once it works, it keeps working. CUPS randomly decided to throw away jobs, until I threw *it* away in disgust. ESR seems to agree (NB: I am in no way a fan of him, but the article struck a few chords) http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/cups-horror.html Despite all this I am still thinking of trying to reinstall it this week - I don't know why... -- A bird in the hand is worth what it will bring. The only problem is the margins, and I can fix that for the most part. I think it's a problem with cups, personally, but I never see anything interesting from debug2, but I'll try again. Hi, I hope this would work for you.. I have recently installed my printer and be able to print successfully using CUPS and gimp-print drivers. What I did was: 1. I'm mainly trying to use it as I've got an OfficeJet G85 that I've never used with FreeBSD and linuxprinting.org has a 'mostly' working driver. Here's what I've done thus far: I've installed CUPS, and have a running daemon. I can login and install printers. I've downloaded the recommended the correct .ppd file according to linuxprinting.org, and tried installing the foomatic scripts it says I need. When I try to print a test page, I get no output what-so-ever and no indication on the printer anything has even happened. I don't know where the CUPS logfile would be, so I can't read that. Anyone have any ideas? I also have a Brother HL-1440 that I've gotten working with apsfilter and lpd (it's a remote printer off a hardware printserver), but I'd like to get it working in CUPS, as it seems much easier to configure margins and such. Thanks for your help! Greetings! Check out /var/log/cups/error.log for error messages. I like to crank the logging level to debug level 2 in /usr/local/etc/cupsd.conf as well, whenever it's not behaving like I want it to. Hey Peter, I tried the web interface, and that's what's not printing test pages. Do I need to move these execs before I try to print a test page? Not so good - I generally find this works even when the /usr/bin binaries are still there. Also, CUPS seems to have munged up my other printer installations pretty badly, and I don't know what to do to get them back. Probably because it overwrites /etc/printcap I guess I'd rather get CUPS working right anyways. Have you tried testing cups by using the cups binaries on the command line specifying the full path? #/usr/local/bin/lpr /etc/hosts should print. If it doesn't, you might get a useful error message. Peter. Thanks! ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
