1) is it fast for *graphics in DOS*? this is not very good in either
VMware or Qemu (it is good in Dosemu)

VMware is very good and works with FreeDOS, any windows and Any Linux.
You will not need support, it easy and it does what you expect it to do,
Qemu is good too, but diffuclt to install and setup.

i myself prefer qemu which seems(imho) faster bochs, gpl and for linux
hosts now they have what they call kvm - http://kvm.qumranet.com/kvmwiki
this feature can be found on mainline linux kernel(2.6.20+)
but you will need a recent intel or amd processor, kvm uses intel's vt
instruction
