I do agree that it makes little sense to automatically load SHARE with boot
config option 2. After all, no other boot option starts SHARE. Also, only a
couple situations require its use.

Mostly, those would be running a multitasking system like Windows or exporting
network filesystems.

Either of these options will most likely require some hand tuning of the system
configuration. So, leaving it in there but commented out is probably the best
solution. A user will see it with customizing their configuration and enable it
manually.

I don't think that going down the CHOICE route is how this should be handled.
Would you want to encounter the following when performing an installation?

Do you want to load DOSLFN? yes/no
If no, Do you want to load LFNDOS?
Do you want to load FreeDOS High, UMB?
How many files do you want to support opening at once?
Do you want to enable hard drive caching?
Do you want to enable floppy caching?
Do you want ..
Do you want to load SHARE?
Do you want ...

:-)

I think it is much easier and less annoying to just hand edit the configuration
afterwards.

create a new virtual box machine with 512 MB disk
use FD12LGC.ISO to boot the machine.

eventually I figured this out, and setup was successful.


some remarks though:

the setup results in

FDCONFIG.SYS:

12:DOS=UMB

makes virtually never sense. DOS=HIGH,UMB is always the better
option.

SHARE is useful when the machine is running as a server, or with

I'm not sure what's happening here exactly, but "sys /k" can change
the bootable kernel's name (although most people keep it to
KERNEL.SYS). To see the raw hex dump of the current boot sector and
view existing kernel name (et al.), you can use a tool like WDE:

You are correct. DOS really has nothing to do with the font.

However, in DOS you can use tools to load a custom font. Many systems support
running fonts that can range from 8x8 to 8x26 pixels. So, the number of lines
of text can range from about 15 to 50. There is some stuff the BIOS can do to
provide things like a 9x16 font. But those are really just playing games with a
8x16 character.

Anyhow, you can use custom font tools to run the larger (or smaller) fonts.
These will not change the size of the screen. They will just effect the height
of the character and how many lines of text you get. That can be useful as well
though.

If you install the extra package PGME (Program Manager Eternity) that is
included on the 1.2 CD and Big USB image, you can easily play with bigger fonts
in text mode. PGME is a dos menu system and program launcher. It has built in
support for using custom fonts and one of its default menus includes viewing
its documentation using a BIG (8x26) font. Included with PGME is the "Eternity
Font Designer" to create and modify the type of fonts used by PGME. There are
also command line utilities to convert to and from plain raster fonts (like
those in the GNU Fonts package) to the format used by PGME. There are also
tools to load the fonts from the command line or even turn them into
stand-alone TSR programs.

Nice video. :-)

KERNEL: By default, the C:\KERNEL.SYS is the booted kernel for FreeDOS 1.2. It
is 386 version and is the same as the C:\FDOS\BIN\KERNL386.SYS that gets
installed during the installation process.

FDIMPLES: When you launch FDIMPLES, it searches for any of the FreeDOS 1.2
install media, repository CD-ROMs and local package directories. If it cannot
find any of these package sources, it just continues without them. Any packages
that are installed and not included in one of those package sources are grouped
together in a rCL! InstalledrCY category. This behavior allows the user to
browse their installed packages and remove items without bothering to mount
their package source media.

In the future, the plan is for FDIMPLES to also be able to pull packages from
multiple online repositories. Instead of being limited to a single repository,
this would allow for users to connect to other repositories that could even
include closed source software.

Thank you for the advice. I tried FDIMPLES, seem to show everything
installed, but for some reason p7zip is missing from its list.

I don't really recommend p7zip for heavy use. For one thing, there is
no active (DOS) maintainer, and it's somewhat buggy because of that
(and the fact that it's really a very sloppy POSIX port that barely
works with DJGPP). I don't grok C++, so I wasn't much further help
regarding it. It does work, but it's far from perfect.

If you just want to unpack .7z files, use 7zdec. But normally, as Jim
Hall always tells us, ZIP is preferred overall, so just use (old but
good) Info-Zip (zip / unzip).

(Or you could run old standalone Win32 7za [sic] under HX. That worked

under HX).

There's also upstream DJGPP builds of XZ, if you just can't live
without LZMA. And a billion other archivers (UHarc??). I honestly

Yes, for now.

There is roughly 400mb in about 100 packages that are included on the 1.2 cd
and large USB stick versions that are included but not installed. At present
they are considered extra/bonus packages.

It's been a few years since I (very briefly) dabbled with running
Kolibri. So, IIRC, it had (minor?) problems with Intel gfx cards.
Also, it would only boot from FAT32 (IIRC).

There are builds of p7zip via DJGPP for DOS, e.g. 9.20.1 or 15.09.
There's also DJGPP-built 7zdec (from LZMA SDK), which is very simple
and small, if all you need is to unpack .7z. There's also DJGPP builds
of xz utils (although p7zip supports .xz as well). Even the Win32
console version (e.g. 7za920.zip) runs under HX.

I don't remember needing LFNs just to boot Kolibri. Sure, FreeDOS
doesn't inherently have LFNs (needs third-party driver / TSR), but
neither did MS-DOS 7, that was only active under the Windows GUI. The
only major DOS that I'm aware of that actively supports LFNs is ROM
DOS 7, which I've never tested (but is still sold online).

Like I said, I haven't used it in years, so I don't remember, but I
vaguely recall that it (only) worked with standard FAT32.

Presumably it's easier to boot under QEMU (and "fat:" maybe helps too
for accessing extra applications).

FreeDOS has FD Fdisk, XFdisk, and SPFdisk. But I don't think
partitioning is your main problem here (and is probably
overcomplicated and dangerous outside of a VM anyways). Maybe I'm
remembering incorrectly, but I don't think I booted Kolibri via floppy
or CD.

IIRC, it had its own loader somehow. I don't recall ever needing
SysLinux (nor MemDisk).

Sounds like a good idea. In my opinion, many new users just give up and move
on when they run into issues.

FreeDOS does support larger partition sizes. However, the if the FreeDOS

FreeDOS also has a couple packages that provided Long File Name support.

Hello Wolfgang, also you can use gparted live: http://gparted.org/ to create a
partition before FreeDos 1.2
can be installed. Best in a clean virtualized partition :). KolibriOS works
great. It will be also great if FreeDos and KolibriOS could share space. :)

That does exist, in a way. I have a computer whose BIOS can boot from a
USB device in such a way that it convinces DOS that drive A: is a
multi-hundred-megabyte floppy disk. The speed is comparable to one as well.

I do agree that it makes little sense to automatically load SHARE with boot 
config option 2. After all, no other boot option starts SHARE. Also, only a 
couple situations require its use. 

Mostly, those would be running a multitasking system like Windows or exporting 
network filesystems. 

Either of these options will most likely require some hand tuning of the system 
configuration. So, leaving it in there but commented out is probably the best 
solution. A user will see it with customizing their configuration and enable it 
manually.

I don't think that going down the CHOICE route is how this should be handled. 
Would you want to encounter the following when performing an installation?

Do you want to load DOSLFN? yes/no
If no, Do you want to load LFNDOS?
Do you want to load FreeDOS High, UMB?
How many files do you want to support opening at once?
Do you want to enable hard drive caching?
Do you want to enable floppy caching?
Do you want ..
Do you want to load SHARE?
Do you want ...

:-)

I think it is much easier and less annoying to just hand edit the configuration 
afterwards.

Why not use the CHOICE option  to let the user decide? I have a menu system
which is designed to be used on a network and requires share to be loaded

IMHO this should be used of the FDNET option as well to allow users to copy
their specific packet driver to the /FDOS/NETWORK dir to avoid an error msg
after initial installation..

The Download page tries to make this clear, with this message:

this one that links to FD12CD.iso:

If that's not clear enough, I have been thinking about tweaking the

to reproduce this FIND problem, I tried to setup a new FD1.2 machine.

what I did:

download FD12LGC.ISO

create a new virtual box machine with 512 MB disk
use FD12LGC.ISO to boot the machine.
boot machine.

hardware platform. Please try a different installation method.'

Welcome to the FreeDOS 1.2 operating system.



now what?

eventually I figured this out, and setup was successful.


some remarks though:

the setup results in

FDCONFIG.SYS:

12:DOS=UMB

makes virtually never sense. DOS=HIGH,UMB is always the better
option.
