Shocking News ! Intel violates Apple EULA !

2009-10-04 Thread Wallace Adrian D'Alessio
Have they no shame!

Well probably not since Apple depends on them for all of their CPUs!

Oh, sure Apple let Intel build a monster Hackintosh and make us drool! See
if we care!

G5 problem?

2009-10-04 Thread Jeffrey Engle

Powered up my G5 2.3ghz 5gb ram running leopard 10.5.8, then went to
take a shower... came back to sleeping monitor and fans running at
full speed. Checked the log and this is what I got. Anybody know how
to read it? Thanks in advance, Jeff

Re: G5 problem?

2009-10-04 Thread Stephen E. Bodnar

Jeff:

Don't know what the kernel report says eggzactly, but my G5 used to do
this on a regular basis. It turned out to be a rogue application. In my
case, I had been using the CodeTek Virtual Desktop. An Apple software
update hosed it, so I had to uninstall. The uninstall still left a few
pieces behind, and I had to search them all out. When I removed them,
the jet takeoffs ceased.

Hope this helps.

Stephen

It appears the Asante driver is causing trouble.

I'd try uninstalling it.

Do you need the card? The computer has a built in Gigabit Ethernet.
Also it's possible the OS has a driver included for it.

You also have a RALink Wireless Driver installed. This MAY be a source
of trouble. If uninstalling the Asante driver doesn't solve it I'd try
uninstalling the RALink

restart. There's plenty of available memory on my hard drive, so I
can't figure out what might be causing this. My internet connection

This is a Power Mac or ?

G4 PowerMac w/1.8 GHz Sonnet CPU w/2GB RAM) running OS 10.4.11.

This is a true freeze - screen does nothing, mouse cursor does not

occur when you're NOT viewing video?

don't think that heat is the issue and the activity monitor indicates
that I'm nowhere near maxing anything out.

Between the upgraded CPU and the xtra drives - that's a lot of heat.
So my first instinct is - what Len said. Try running with the door
open and see if that changes the behavior any. Try adding some air
flow - a fan blowing in there etc.

Find out exactly where you stand wrt heat. Install iStat Menus and
enable the temp displays.

dvd authoring

2009-10-04 Thread Nestamicky

Real quick here: anyone know of free dvd authoring software I could drop
in my sawtooth, so I can actually spend the rest of the day on something
else? I keep getting: Could not record the disc because of a Mac OS
error. Result code=50. Using Toast 9 with a PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8801
Ver. 4D28. The thing it at times it work and at times it does not, with
the same type of media.
SimplyBurn is down right now, the link is not getting anywhere. So, if
someone can think of a free dvd authoring app, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

I've got a feeling this is a firmware issue. You'd need a Windows PC
to upgrade the firmware. The problem is that this DVD drive is a
relabeled BenQ drive, and it has the OEM (first version) of the
Philips firmware, so it's likely at least a couple years prior
firmware to the latest available firmware, which as far as I can tell
is the firmware for the BenQ model DW1650 version BCIC. There were
many upgrades for the BenQ version to this unit, and most people
report this is a good, solid performer, so if possible, I'd try to
cross-flash to the BenQ firmware, which seems to be a common thing to

Subject: Minitower freezing at startup

From:Jonas Ulrich jonasulrich3...@gmail.com

 I just overclocked my beige g3 with 400MHZ processor to a 433MHZ. I am
trying to install 9.2 but everytime i put in the disc it gets to the
loading screen and completely freezes. Not even the mouse moves. Help
  please! -Jonas

Did it work before?
[YES] It's propably the overclocking that broke it.
[NO] Try a different installation method. Best would be to install it on
another G3 and transfer the HDD back to your G3. See if it boots then.

Cheers,
Andreas.

Overclock could be too high, you might try the normal 400 MHz to begin
with. You can't generally overclock the System bus to anything greater
than the stock 66 MHz unless your motherboard had the faster Grackle
chip, which normally only came on the early 233 MHz motherboards. You
might also have a RAM issue, bad RAM or poorly seated RAM can cause
freezes. Reseating everything rarely hurts and often helps.

9.2 isn't the best MacOS for the Beige. The Beige's personality cards
used some special extensions that only worked up to OS 9.1, so 9.1 was
the final version of MacOS that supported the Beige hardware. You
can use 9.2.2, but you need to replace several of the extensions with
older versions from 9.1 or earlier.

As I remember, some that are necessary to replace are (final working
versions listed):

Sound Control Panel (???)
ATI Graphics Accelerator v. 5.2.4
ATI Resource Manager v. 2.7.3

Yes, 9.2.2 runs, but if you ever need to import video using a Wings AV
card, or import sound using a Whisper card, you'll find that 9.2.2
won't work. Also, I believe the ATI video acceleration with the built-

you'll see an X across the ATI extension.)

This error message seems strange to me, I don't see what DNS and tcp
network stuff has to do with DVD burning? (is your Toast program or
some other program phoning home perhaps? Little Snitch can help
phone home instances). When I Googled failed: Bad Instance Name
(-65540) I see someone having a problem with a HD, so it doesn't
appear to be specific to the optical drive unit, but rather perhaps a
bus issue? I didn't see a solution, but you might try a Safe Boot and
see what happens when no 3rd-party extensions are loaded (you may not
be able to use Toast, but Disk Utility or other Apple apps should burn
DVDs still).

Also, the Safe Boot will clear the cache files, so IF it works in Safe
Boot mode, there's a chance it MAY also work in a normal boot when you
restart. If if DOES work in Safe Boot, but DOESN'T work in normal
boot, THEN you've got a software problem with some non-Apple software
extension. If it DOESN'T work in Safe Boot, you could have a System
software issue, which MAY be solved by reinstalling the latest COMBO
update. If that fails, the optical drive MAY be bad, although you
could possibly try a different jumper setting or attaching to a
different bus to see?

Hey Stephen,
Did this set up work before? If not, are you piggy backing 2 hubs to one

powering all these things alone off the computer USB port to rule out any bad
hardware (opti mouse, camera and thumbs)... If they all work then the problem
is the hubs or they way they are set up...

On os 9 it lets you turn off extension until you find the one that
causes the freeze on boot up. That would probably give you a pretty
good hint as to what part of the process is messing up..

Good Luck!!

Is there anywhere you can get the proper extensions for the ati video
in the old beige g3's for 9.2.2??

Yes. You can download the OS 9.1 update from Apple and use TomeViewer
to extract the extensions.

Opps! The GCE-8240B ISN'T a SuperDrive, or even a Combo Drive, it's a
CD-RW drive ONLY, this means NO DVDs at all. Only CDs and CDRW media.

 Model:HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8240B
  Revision:1.05

Might want to update the firmware?
The last version was Revision: 1.08 available here:
http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=viewid=1200

Normally, upgrading the firmware will give you better media
compatibility, and perhaps better burn characteristics.

The GCE-8240B is a 24x read, 10x write CDRW, so it's not too good by
modern 52x standards, but it's probably serviceable. To upgrade the
firmware you'd need to place the unit into a Windows PC, I don't think
there are any Macintosh update programs.

 Hey Stephen,
Did this set up work before?

I had 1 USB 4 Port Hub on one USB port and the KB on another

If not, are you piggy backing 2 hubs to one USB port in the computer?
Nope, each is on is own (each 4 port hub)

Also another thing would be are they 1.1 USB ports or 2.0?
No idea. Here are their model numbers

 F5U014-OE (
 http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:TJwCsGlzYBUJ:www.belkin.com/support/download/download.asp%3Fdownload%3DF5U014-OE%26lang%3D1%26mode%3D+F5U014-OEcd=1hl=enct=clnkgl=usclient=safari
 )

A search of their site finds me nothing thus the Google cache site

 2nd one
 http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=93743

The camera and or the opt mouse might need a 2.0 USB port, and this
 might be your problem?
The Mouse is a Logitech LX3 Optical Mouse

Is this a laptop or a tower?
 Tower. A Mac G4 Quicksilver

If it's a tower you might be able to add more USB ports and I would go
 with the 2.0...
I am looking into this. Anyone?

Another thing I would plug all the hubs into the power strip so they
are all free from the bus!!!
Find me a DC 5V cord and I will put the first mentioned hob on it

Try powering all these things alone off the computer USB port to rule
out any bad hardware (opti mouse, camera and thumbs)... If they all
work then the problem is the hubs or they way they are set up...
Before I added the 2nd Hub I never saw this problem.

Do you have a powered zip drive, or 5vdc netgear hub? borrow the wall
wart to test with if plug fits.

Too bad u r in Philly I would of loaned you one I have in Oklahoma.
