Re: PPC Intel HDD partition map

2010-06-08 Thread Mark Sokolovsky
The reason why a PPC and an intel can both boot from 10.4 and 10.5 is
because they have both the intel and the PPC code. Since they have both
processor architecture codes, it won't care if it's a PPC or intel. It will
only care if it has a bootup volume. I have an Internal 2.5" 320GB SATA HDD
hooked up through a card I got up off of newegg, and it has an emergency
copy of Leopard on it just in case I need help. It works on my Spring 2010
Mac Pro and on my iSaw.

PPC Intel HDD partition map

2010-06-08 Thread John Carmonne

HI ALL
I have an external FW USB 320 drive that I keep all my PPC install
software on, it's a lot cleaner way than discs and dirty optical
drives, I confused my self tonight and booted 10.5 with an Intel
MacBook and did a clean install, I thought that the drive had to be
formated GUID to boot an Intel machine,This drive I have is Apple
partition Map because I use it to boot all my PPC stuff and have
basic CCCs on it> Why does the MacBook boot from it. It has some
Intel Tiger install discs that came with it,

I have had some luck on a Linux box using mencoder to expand wmv into avi. A
second pass with ffmpeg can then convert the avi to, for me MPEG, but other
choices are available. Perhaps not Apple's MOVIE though

mencoder is part of mplayer. ffmpeg probably uses some of the code. All should
work OK on OS neXt but you would have to install them from source or perhaps
through one of the porting systems. You will surely be into operations with
Terminal.app.

The ffmpeg step will convert images to pixels using a screen-ready intermediate
step so it's possible that some fidelity is lost.

The command lines I used came from the internet and I don't claim to be an
expert. Ask if you would like my notes which are in a text file.

wmv and avi are both collector formats. Internally there can be a whole lot of
divers encoders in play. The headers somehow identify what will be used and
many are proprietary.

Re: Importing WmV files to final cut pro

FCP doesn't read .wmv natively.
If you have Flip 4 Mac Pro it should work because that is a Quicktime
Plug In. If you don't have the Pro version of Flip 4 Mac, it is probably
just going to waste your time importing a file with a big ugly watermark.

AFAIK, you have to pay money to interpret .wmv on a Mac.

Flip 4 mac merely lets you open files in Quicktime. As I said, IIRC, FCP wants
video in specific formats (which I am sure are explained in the documentation
if you RTM) to manipulate it.

If FCP wants to render it before it'll let you work with it, I'd suggest
letting FCP render it first.

I am hardly an expert in FCP, though, there are a lot of people on this list
far more conversant than I am, and I'd wager, you'll find even more expert
advice if go find a FCP forum to ask your questions on...

Strange, since I believe Sonnet's card is likely a relabeled Firmtek

several of their PCI cards and cpus. But the lower price and 2 year
