Re: Can I boot a quicksilver off an internal SCSI drive?

2010-12-06 Thread Deiniol ap Deiniol
Hi Dana,
Pleased to say you inspired me, so I just whipped the
Atto UL2D SCSI card and the 80GB drive out of the old 733 QS tonight,
and stuck it into the 933. Went ahead and tried a Leopard install
from the Time Machine drive. Absolutely no problem at all,
everything went tremendously smoothly, and Leopard seems to run
nicely on the 933, so I now have the choice of Tiger or Leopard. Now I
just need to find a way of permanently mounting the SCSI drive (which
at the moment is perched under the DVD drive!).
I have a drive cage from a Sawtooth, which has the housing for a Zip
drive underneath, but I somehow doubt that this would be compatible
with the QS case - although I've just looked in my 733 QS case and
that HAS got the optical cage with the under case, so that's probably
the way to go, especially since the 733 seems terminally unhappy.

(This is the machine that requires multiple (100+!) reboots until it
eventually stabilises, and then works fine until powered off - it
powered itself off some months ago and I never got around to
restarting it, and it was thrown/moved gently aside when the 933
arrived. I did post a thread about it but never got any definitive
answers. I tried it the other night and it would get as far as a bong
every few attempts, but I never got it to get any further this time.
It used to eventually get to the desktop and then die, then it would
run for a couple of minutes and die again, I had it set up to reboot
on power off, which meant I could leave it sorting itself out for the
hour it would usually take to stabilise, but in a moment of inspired
madness I zapped the PRAM, so I was back to button pushing again! DUH!
Guess I need ANOTHER QS so I can try a power supply swap to see if
that's the problem).

I suppose stage 3 is to slap my other little SCSI drive in there and
see if I can get a working Linux distro on to that, but that can wait
for another night!

And at some point I have to get a new DOS/WINDOZE machine up and
running so I can flash my 9200 graphics card to put in the QS (64MB
Geforce MX is not really cutting it, although it's better than the
32MB it came with) - my main working PC (rarely used these days!) for
some reason came without an AGP slot (I got it off a dumpster for free
so I treated it to a 256MB PCI graphics card). THIS machine I got off
ebay - someone had split it up to sell it - I was bidding on its
Firewire card and I bid for the rest on a whim, since nobody else
seemed interested and I got the whole machine w/o HD for £5. 5 year
old PCs just don't hold their value like 5 year old Macs do they! :)

Still trying to break the president ah_Clem ? ( Ah_clem's clever web handle
is a rather obscure reference to a Firesign Theater skit where an insistent
dissenter badgers an automated president of the USA and breaks him with
simple logic. Firesign Theater fans [like myself[ like to play out scenes
and have a penchant for the dramatic. They often forget that younger people
go more for Stewie or some Teen Hunger Force style of randomness. )

It mystifies me why we are worried about rich text ten years into the new
millennium. Especially in support of a computer platform which claims
preeminence in web creation. Go figure.

since my initial post to this thread, i have had a private exchange
with list nanny Paul Stamsen. i have been accused, because of my
post, of being rude and lacking common courtesy. to that i say that
when individuals post a response containing one single sentence which
actually contributes to an ongoing discussion, but feel the need to
append dozens of lines of useless garbage, and do this over and over
and over, for example:

i find THESE to be the height of hubris, discourtesy, and rudeness.
"Help bunny take over the world!"??? REALLY??? after being forced to
scroll past that 100 times, no one else finds it childish and inane?

“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I
thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish
things”

equally rude are the needlessly long professional sig files. it's
like saying, "here, the price for my tidbit of wisdom is that you have
to be incessantly reminded of my exalted position." that's not rude?
yet i am being accused of being rude for calling childishness and self-
serving vanity what they are? methinks some of you have no clue what
constitutes rude and discourteous.

"Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth."
"Charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up."

since ATTACHED files are prohibited, perhaps it's time for all
APPENDED files to be prohibited as well, since some folks can't seem
to restrain themselves from abusing the practice.

and for the record, ALL of the example sig files i quoted above DO
violate the list rules. go read 'em yourself, if you don't believe
me.

Quicksilver USB

2010-12-06 Thread Stephen Conrad
OK, I had removed all but the 4-Port Hub which has the other 2 hubs plugged
into it.
The 4-Port Hub has a power cord (I knocked it down to 4.5V and it still ran
fine)

NOTE: The KB is plugged into the 2nd USB Port on the Mac (Hub is on the
other one) and the Mouse is plugged into the KB

In each of the other 2 I had plugged in 2 cords
1) 2 USB Thumb Drives
2) 2 Camera cords but only 1 Camera is hooked up and it has a power cord

Ran fine for 3 Days

This afternoon I came to check email and it had shut off
I fired it up and got the usual Error Code (the one I have posted here
before)

Here is the list of USB Stuff

USB Device: Hub in Apple USB Keyboard, Alps Electric, Up to 12 Mb/sec, 500
mA
USB Device: USB Optical Mouse, Logitech, Up to 1.5 Mb/sec, 100 mA
USB Device: Apple USB Keyboard, Alps Electric, Up to 1.5 Mb/sec, 250 mA
USB Device: Hub, Up to 12 Mb/sec, 500 mA
USB Device: USB2.0 Hub, Up to 12 Mb/sec, 500 mA
USB Device: DataTraveler 2.0, Kingston, Up to 12 Mb/sec, 500 mA
USB Device: TD Classic 003C, Memorex, Up to 12 Mb/sec, 500 mA
USB Device: USB2.0 Hub, Up to 12 Mb/sec, 500 mA
USB Device: u10D,S300D,u300D, OLYMPUS, Up to 12 Mb/sec, 500 mA

Being as I have had more plugged in at other times and never had this issue
could I have a USB port going bad? Also, can I have 2 USB cards in this
thing?

Well, you can always replace the Flash chip. The things are just 8
pin SOICs, which are a little awkward to work with, but really not
that difficult. And they cost about $2 each.

Once you have one of large enough capacity on board, flash it with
whatever firmware will do the trick.

When modifying the R7000 I used to pre-program the Flash chips with a
chip programmer before soldering them on. That bypassed the entire
flashing process, or at least ensured that I could flash them on a Mac
without any hassles.

Re: Optical drive interface speeds

Is there any advantage to a USB/FW400/FW800 and eSATA on an

Well, that would, of course, depend on the drive.

Here's one that OWC recommends for Mac Pro -- just to take an example.

Pioneer DVR-218L 22X DVD Burner

Its internal interface is SATA. I would venture it's SATA I, which
is quite a bit faster than the max r and w speeds (below).

Data Transfer Rate (Data Read - Sustained)
DVD max 22.16 MB/sec
CD max 6.14 MB/sec

Data Transfer Rate (Data Write - Sustained)
DVD max 27.7 MB/sec (22x DVD-R)
CD max 6.14 MB/sec (40x CD-R)

27.7 MB/sec is 221.6 Mbps. That's about 80% of the normal throughput
of USB 2 (dedicated).

This is a common QS issue. The PS is dead. The logic board is likely alive.

I asked on this list a while back and got a couple links to modifying ATX power
supplies to work. Search the archives. The professor whose computer it was
decided to go for a real QS power supply, it cost about $230 or so, IIRC.

Only the MDD power supplies are drop in replacements
If you're looking on ebay then do a search for MDD power supply.
You'll get a number of hits.

Ticking PSU - Quicksilver G4

2010-12-06 Thread Nick Smith (SHDC)
Hello

Just picked up a non-starting quicksilver. Power button will flash but not stay
on, some flickers of motherboard LEDs etc.
Whenever a power-supply is attached to the PSU I get ticking from the PSU
itself.

The PSU is currently disconnected from everything and is out of the case, when
I attach a power lead I get the same clicking.

Looks like the PSU is toasted but I just wondered if anyone has had any luck
simply blasting canned air into the PSU to clean out the dust etc.

Also, what are my chances that the motherboard has been damaged by the problems
with the PSU ?

Many thanks everyone

Nick

IIRC the tolerance of the 5 volt buss on all computer power supplies is
4.75v to 5.25v dc (min-max). Anything above or below those values will
