Re: QS2002 shuts down when sleep selected

2017-02-16 Thread Gerald
Regarding my plan to re-install tiger: the QS2002 persistently kernel
panics when attempting to start from firewire drive with 10.4.3 install
dvd image (this has been successful many times as my normal tiger
installer) -

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0036E28C): "Unable to find driver for this
platform:
\"PowerMac3.5\".\n@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.5.20/iokit/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1407

I'm thinking to move from this problem on unless someone has an answer
to this which allows me to re-install tiger.

It seems obvious to me now that the only thing left is the power supply
- but should I have seen this from the problem snippets I have mentioned
so far?

I then tried AHT for G4s and that found no problems.

Sometimes a restart works, sometimes it gives shutdown.

By the way, these shutdowns, when they occur, are instant, no disk

I think it unlikely to be hdd problems as it occurs with tiger on two

I've tried two pram batteries and the date & time are being reserved

I've also tried starting without pram battery and, apart from being
told the date is wrong, the sleeps still shutdown.

I'll do a complete system re-install (the two systems are identical,
one being a clone of the main hdd) - this is about the last resort.

Instant shutdowns are often caused by bad RAM. You should probably
troubleshoot the RAM.

I’d open it up, remove all the RAM, visually inspect the gold trace
leads, and reinstall.

A PPC Ubuntu boot CD has MemTest in the initial boot menu, or find a
similar Mac boot CD with a RAM test.

Other things you can do is start with a single stick of RAM, use the
computer, if the problem disappears, then add another stick, until
you either determine which stick is bad, or find the problem is
either not related to RAM, or was the bad seating of the RAM within
the slot.

Thanks Bruce, I did think that may be the problem.
I'll look around for a power supply later when time allows.

We'll close this issue now.

Bruce,

Thanks for the link, I'll follow it through as I can - the slowness is because
whatever I do results in shutdown and then the G4 won't start on the power

followed by shutdown), maybe two hours left alone - that is the only timing I
have so far.

Restart and sleep result in shutdown, attempt to start with commad-option-P-R
also results in immediate shutdown, and the same if power button pressed
(without pram resetting) soon after shutdown.

However, the power button gets it started when pressed after a couple of hours
have passed.

Last night I deleted the preference files noted in the link - could not restart.

This morning I have managed to reset the pram - and it has just shut down again
as I write!

At least the mac mini is going strong!

I'm thinking, from the delay, maybe a capacitor or similar is at fault?

I have just hit the power button and it is now starting with only a short delay
- maybe progress is being made!

If I get it fixed I'll let you know - if you don't hear from me it is because I
have let it go - it is only a backup mac but I would like to have it working
(and sleeping).

The screen has just blanked, followed after about one minute by shutdown.

My QS 933 shuts down a few mins after going to sleep.
Have tried various things and checked all settings related to power and
shutdown etc. but been unable to resolve. Note I only use OS9.
I reckon its a power supply issue...
