The problem you described with the two new tracks is a standard ie bug I
think I get that a lot also. However if you keep trying they will eventually
work. I have, however, been emailed about a few 404 errors on that page and
I will get round to fixing these as sooon as possible.

Thanks for the info.

Hello Damien,
I just got around to downloading those cars from your site. While doing so I
noticed a couple of problems that I am not sure you are aware of.
1. The link for the car that sounds like a telephone doesn't work.

2. The links for downloading the 2 new tracks don't work (at least for me
just now). When I clicked on the links they opened the normal box to either
open or save. I clicked on save and they immediately opened to box that
stated close when downloaded. The box to name it or where to save it never
popped up. I just let it run for many minutes and nothing happened. I did
however end up getting the files from DJC's site.

Just thought you should know.

Hi, Ryan.
Are you talking about the Murk? For 5 of the statues pick any direction and
stumble around some. Sometimes you will find a Swomp Troll, Murkman, etc and
eventually the game will begin randomly generating the statues.
However, on the far side of the North end of the Murk you will find the
final statue.

you can heal right befor entering the swamp. There are other places in teh

You may want to wait until you up your melee more to try the merk, that can
be a tricky one if you have lower melee. When it is a bit higher, then

Just some insight information: both competitions have too little entries on
audio games... and participating means more games :)

Hi Folks,

This list has been very quiet in relation to the Retro Remakes 2006 Big
Competition [1] (http://www.retroremakes.com/comp2006) and the Accessibility
Game Coding Content [2] (http://www.donationcoder.com/Contests/agame).
Anyone here busy with it?

Greets,

Richard

[1] The Retro Remakes 2006 Big Competition - Promoting Accessibility In
Games, has just begun! Programmers have 3 months to make the best remake
they possibly can, with over £4,000 worth of prizes up for grabs this year.
The goal is to make Good remakes of good games that anyone can play,
regardless of their ability. So this includes games for people with visual
disabilities!

[2] Donationcoder.com (http://www.donationcoder.com/) holds an accessible
game design contest from Jun. 1, 2006 to Sep. 1, 2006. The task is to invent
and program a game in one of two possible categories: audio games and a
one-switch game. Prize-winners can gain over $5,000 worth of prizes!

[Audyssey] Table-top mapping.

2006-07-28 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Hello. For those of you who run table-top roleplaying games, like
Dungeons and Dragons, what solutions have you found to maintain maps
for complex battles. In my current campaign, my nine players, plus 3
NPCs, eight horses, wagon and baggage are about to be ambushed by
fifteen brigands, who will in turn be ambushed by the ogre band they
are fleeing from. This makes for a bewildering array of targets to track.

I'm using Excel to do the monkey-work of keeping track of initiative,
HP, etc, but I need a solution for tracking a battlefield that's
liable to encompass a one or two hundred square of terrain that
varies from open hillside to dense woods. I'm willing to provide
detailed descriptions for my sighted players, but I want a way to
track this sprawling fight for myself so I can tell the players what
they see and what their opponents are doing.

The description of the sprawling fight in the recent Audyssey gives
me some hope that there might be a solution for this more elegant
than an Excel sheet with positions marked on it.

[Audyssey] Accessibility Idols at GDC 2007

2006-07-28 Thread AudioGames.net
Hi Folks,

A couple of weeks ago there were two major events concerning game
accessibility. The first was at this years ICCHP convention in Linz (Austria),
where several (academic) projects, including AGRIP Audio Quake and Universally
Accessible Space Invaders, were presented in a 2 hour session. Matthew Atkinson
of AGRIP gave a presentation about his theories and findings in the AudioQuake
project. Guidelines for game accessibility were also presented here. These are
one of the first sets of guidelines currently under development (in this case
these resemble the style and format of W3C's WAI-CAG guidelines for web
accessibility). I personally think there's a lot wrong with the proposed
guidelines so I look forward to the other ones currently under development. I
suggest you all have a look for yourselves here:
http://gameaccess.medialt.no/guide.php and see how people are out there trying
to define how the industry should make more accessible games. I'm interested in
what you, the target group for these guidelines, think about them...

The other major event was Develop Brighton in (where else) Brighton (England),
where the IGDA Game Accessibility Special Group held a full-day tutorial with
presentations and hands-on gaming events. Among the participants were Michelle
Hinn (IGDA), Thomas Westin and Goran Lange (PinInteractive), Dimitris Grammenos
and Giannis Georgalis (Universally Accessible Space Invaders), Barrie Ellis
(OneSwitch.org.uk), yours truly (AudioGames.net / Accessibility.nl) and Eelke
Folmer (Ass. Professor and more . Michelle talked about the field of game
accessibility, I held a general presentation on audio games and blind
accessible game design, Thomas Westin showed some nifty things with games
controlled with your mental abilities (using brainwaves), Goran talked about
the future of accessible educational games, and Dimitris and Giannis shared
their experiences and possible future steps in the Universally Accessible Games
project. And to end with a bang, Eelke showed some new insights to accessible
game design (also in relation with usability design) and also possible
guidelines (although in a usability format this time).

In the audience was none other than game veteran Ernest Adams himself. Ernest
is about to publish his new book (http://tinyurl.com/h9b26) which will feature
an appendix on (more) accessible game design.

One newsitem I am very proud to announce is that of the GDC Accessibility
Idols. The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is the biggest game design related
conference in the world (and no, the E3 is a consumer expo where all new and
future games are on display - the E3 is where publishers go to sell their games
(and designers go to get drunk, and the GDC is where designers go to get
serious about their design (and eventually get drunk as well).
The IGDA GA-SIG (www.igda.org/accessibility) has managed to set up an amazing
event for next years GDC and it is called Accessibility Idols. For this
event, very famous game designers are asked to design an accessible game. The
games will then be presented before a huge crowd and judged by an expert panel.
Although I can''t really name any names yet, rumour has it that none other than
Ernest Adams (see above) and Keita Takahashi (the creator of Katamari Damacy)
might be amongst the designers to take on the challenge. Also see this month's
issue of E-Access Bulletin:

'Pop Idol' Style Contest Launched To Find Accessible Games.

A major international 'Pop Idol' style competition to find the best accessible
computer games is being promoted as part of a range of activities launched this
week to raise awareness of the needs of disabled gamers.

'Accessibility Idol', named after the popular TV show, is the brainchild of the
US-based International Game Developers Association ( IGDA -http://www.igda.org/
).

The contest will take the form of a show with finalists presenting their
accessible game to an audience at the Game Developers
Conference(http://www.gdconf.com/ ) in San Francisco, US, in March 2007. Some
of the world's largest software and gaming companies have been signed up or
invited,
although the association has not yet publicly confirmed participants' names.

The move follows the launch of two other contests launched this month to find
innovative, accessible games: one from Retro Remakes, which
redesigns classic video games ( http://www.retroremakes.com/comp2006/ ) and
another from US-based free software company Donation Coder
( http://www.donationcoder.com/ ).

And last week, an IGDA special interest group hosted a day-long workshop on
accessible gaming held as part of the Develop computer games conference held in
Brighton, England (http://www.tandem-events.com/workshops.html#accessibility ).
E-Access Bulletin will report in full on this workshop in our next issue.

Hi Chris,
I believe that John the DM uses a sheet of raised line braille paper with
lines spaced an inch apart forming squares that represent two square feet of
game play.
I think he uses round and square objects like bottle caps or checkers to
represent the two sides of a battle with numbers on them.
Round 1 would be the first party member in alphabetical order.
Square 1 would be the first monster or enemy fighter.
I guess he could tape four of these squares together to represent a giant
monster.
These numbers would refer to his spread sheet that gives the character and
monster attributes.

Just a quick note before closing.

I have tried it with my new 7.1 and it said it was going to do it, but did
not. I did it a second time and it work. So, maybe thie first time you do
it it may have to set its set up up on the first time. I may test this some
other time to see if it is not a bug or not. I know that there is a bug in
Jaws 7.1 when exiting Outlook expree that Jaws quits and it may even silence
my sound card totally.

If anybody else has this bug reply off list to me, so I can see if this is

 Hi Folks,
This is off topic but so great I couldn't resist posting it.
 If you're using Jjaws 7.1, YOU'LL FIND
A NEW FEATURE AVAILABLE TO YOU. IF you want to reply directly to the
 sender
of any message, just press insert+shift+r. This action will cause your
reply to be sent directly to the original sender as opposed to the
 group.
 JFW says,
 Replying directly to sender.
then it puts the sender's email address into your clipboard and pastes
 it
 into the to field.
If you did it on this message instead of the to field saying,
 Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org
 it would say,

 Now back to game discussions.

 Hi Ari,
I send exe files as attachments with Outlook express by zipping them up
 first.
They need to be less than about 7 mb in size after zipping since the
 attachment process makes them larger.
Windows explorer should be able to unzip them.

If the file is too large for Outlook to handle, a service like usendIt or
SendSpace will work but the zipping is lots easier to do so I would
 recommend that first.

 Hi,
I'd please like to know if someone on the list can help us out here.
 Damien
wants to send me the text editor, but his Microsoft Outlook won't handle
.exe files. He has suggested that, with Skype or MSN, he can send me the
file directly. My problem is that I'm an absolute beginner with both
programs, having only just installed Skype (but not as yet having read
 the
manual, and for some reason I am still having problems with the
 connection
from my Mike to my PC, so I don't have a clue how to chat, let alone how
 to
do a file transfer), and I don't have, or am fimiliar with, MSN either.
Could Damien Skype or MSN the file to someone who could then email it to
 me,
or could someone suggest another way of file delivery?
 Thanks
 Ari

My character Kira is up in the 40's with melee and stamina, and the Murk

The best way to restore health points is head west out of the Murk heal

[Audyssey] Replacement Voice for Top Speed

2006-07-28 Thread djc
New American Replacement voices for game settings and menus as well as
default cars have been uploaded to my ftp site. The file will be on the
front door of the ftp meaning the root of the ftp. The file is called
TopSpeedWibbleVoice.zip and contains 236 files I believe. To use these new
files put all these files in to the PlayingInTheDark\Sounds\en folder and
when asked just say yes to all and it will replace the files. You may want
to make a backup copy of your en folder just incase you decide you'd prefer

Re: [Audyssey] Table-top mapping.

2006-07-28 Thread Lisa Leonardi
Hi.

I've never ran a game, but I do play. I don't have any idea how I would go
about using the map if I were to run a game. When I play, other sighted
players generally place my miniature on the board, and describe the layout
and where the others are in relationship to me. It's not perfection, but it
works. So if it allows me to play, that's how I'll do it. Smile.

This makes for a bewildering array of targets to
 track.

If you use telnet, this is the address you should type into your addressbar.

I'm not sure about any other mud client since I can't figure out how to get

Re: [Audyssey] Replacement Voice for Top Speed

2006-07-28 Thread shaun everiss
Well I think all this stuff was done by those who do tbrn.
The server went offline last week and people got bored and made this
stuff up on a teamtalk server.

You may want
to make a backup copy of your en folder just incase you decide you'd prefer
the Dutch voice instead. I don't know who did these since he didn't include
a read.me but nice job whoever you are.
If you've never logged in to my ftp here are the instructions once again.

Hostname: djc.my-net-space.net
Username: PlayingInTheDark and please note each word is Capitalized.
Password: racing
No Passive mode allowed on the server.
Please log in and check out these new voices.
