[Audyssey] Monty First impressions

2007-07-08 Thread Che
Nice job so far on Monty Thomas.
Glad to see you got the SAPI stuff working, I think it is definately the
way to go.
As mentioned before, it would be very helpful to include a sound review
menu so players would know what the different sounds mean.
And you seriously need to convert your manual to a .html file or something
similar that will make searching for different information easier, I did
this with rail racer, and one can easily find the section they need by using
the H key to go to the different headings.
Great job on the sound effects, very clean and pleasant to the ear.
What is your intended price for the game? Are you going to stick to the
pre order price set by whats his name way back?
  Later,
  Che

 Hi mich,
Did you have .Net 2.0 already installed? If so what it sounds like to me
is you had it installed, and tried to run a new install over top of it
which killed your .Net Framework. Solution for that is completely remove
Monty, and the .Net Framework, and reinstall them clean.
Other thing is after you reinstall .Net then try and reinstall DirectX
June 2007, and finally reinstall Monty.

Re: [Audyssey] monty score - Re: monte problem

2007-07-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
You are doing pretty good. By the way, patch 1 will have a revised score
chart. The reason is someone friendly on list sent me a document which
has the official Monty score chart from the Atari version, and I'll be
upgrading the game to use the official scoring for the game as well as
changes in the rules to match the original Atari version that I missed
in beta 1 official.

Re: [Audyssey] monte problem

2007-07-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Michael,
Yes, you missed a few things, and you wont' find them unless you use a
torch in some rooms to reveal some of the hidden treasures. Some rooms
are completely dark, and to do it in audio I turned off the audio for
hidden effects. When you carry a lit torch into that room the treasures
will start making sounds so you can find them or see them.
This is a modification of the original game where items were blacked out
until you used a torch to make them appear.

Hi Michael,
Like I said before some gems are well hidden, and torches will help you
locate those missing items. In patch 1 which I am working on now the
scores will be fixed to match the classic Atari game. It will be
possible to reach a much higher score on easy with the new score changes.

Hi Che,
I'm thinking of a price that is between $30 and $35 for the final
release. I'm not going to stick anyone here with James North's final

Yes, I am working on a sound review menu, and I will conver the final

rather not really go through the work of coding the html manual until I
am certain it is pretty much complete.

Hi Tom,
as for coding the HTML manual, why not use an advanced text editor such as
Pspad to convert the text document into HTML and then just create the
fragment links as necessary? You could just create a heading for each
section and turn the entries in the table of contents into links that would
put you to the appropriate fragments of the page. If I imagine it this way,
it shouldn't take more than 10 to 15 minutes. I can do it for you if and
when you like.
Thanks,

[Audyssey] Question about Monty

2007-07-08 Thread Christian
Hi Thomas and all,
First, I have completed the game on easy difficulty and now going to play the
normal level.
I really like the game and the sound effects are great! one thing that i really
hope will be in the full release is a little more random gameplay. Like
monsters and other objects are placed at random locations each time you start a
new game. Since now I know where monsters as well as gems and healing potions
are located.
What do you think?
All the best,
Christian

Has anybody beat SoundRTS on aggressive computer 2 yet?
The longest I've lasted against it is 20 minutes.
Is it me, or does it seem unbeatable on aggressive 2 to anybody else?
I tried everything I could think of and it still kicks my hind parts.
If anybody has beaten it on aggressive 2 some hints would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Re: [Audyssey] About SoundRTS

2007-07-08 Thread SoundMUD
Here are some answers. If you have a question without answer, feel
free to ask again.

1. Would it be possible to have more chapters in a future release? I
think there are many possibilities to create them in a way that the
difficulty rises slowly with each chapter, so that you can learn every
aspect of the game.

Yes, and I'll try to add an in game tutorial so that the game can be
learned without having to read the manual, or at least the very first
steps.

2. Oh, and I found the homepage of soundmud and though I don't speak
france very well I realized that there is another game wich is more
like Diablo. Is an english version planned for this game?

Yes, I will translate it soon. This game is far less complete than
SoundRTS and still far from Diablo. The only aspect of Diablo I
transfered is the fact that you just have to select a monster and then
press and hold the action button to go to it and kill it in 2 or 3
hits, or you flee with the arrow keys. This seems simplistic but it
may be fun. And there is a little randomness in a few parts of the
game (like in Diablo or Nethack). But it lacks many things yet. For
example there is no inventory, no potions, you just use different
weapons that you find.

I also am not a huge fan of the over all keyboard layout. I think Phil's

taken something away for me personally.
I could rewrite the keymap, but that is a major pain to go through.

Yeah. I could sort of understand it if the game had been bigger and only

I'll buy Chillingham 2 if and when that game ever comes out. I mean I beat
Chillingham in less than a day, and on both difficulty settings to boot. But
for a download, and a fairly simple game to boot? I think the thirty to

Re: [Audyssey] Question about Monty

2007-07-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Christian,
While I like the concept of random item and monster placement it really
defeats what I am trying to do which is recreate Montezuma's Revenge as
close to the original game as possible. The original Atari version had
no randomly placed items. So Monty currently has no code to do that.
If I later decide to add random items, random numbers of weapons, etc
then I will try and do that in a much later release of the game. Like a
Monty 2.0 version or something like that. Right now I have about 100
people on a waiting list who prepaid for this game, and I want to get 1.0

Re: [Audyssey] Question about Monty

2007-07-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
Right. The original game of Monty was about timing and memorisation of
finding things. Might hurt replay value in the end, but that's just the
way the games were back then.
There is however areas randomness can be used like random health damage,
random health restores, how long an amulit lasts, etc.
I have yet to add the amulits to the game, but those magic items gives
you temperary invincibility to monsters. Amulates can be randomly set to
give some randomness in the game.

Charles Rivard wrote:
As I understand it, the original game was played using your memory of the
locations of monsters and traps, so, the longer you played, the better you
got at the game. So there wasn't randomness in the monster and trap
placement. There has been a lot of discussion as to whether there should,
or should not be, randomness in the game. While randomness would add a
little more challenge and replay value, it would stray from the original.
Which way to go is up to Tom. I would be happy either way. I would like
the randomness, but would also like to have a game as close to the original
as he can reasonably get it.

Re: [Audyssey] Monty First impressions

I don't know if Pspad can read the MS Word documents but I doubt. I may give
it a try though.
HOwever, whenever I want a long document to be converted into HTML, I just
save it as plain text (I believe RTF could work too) and open it in Pspad
and just choose convert to html. The coolest thing about this feature is
that it preserves the formating of your original file when possible, so you
have the same paragraphs and fonts used in the HTML file. Then I can do any
changes I need manually, and it really makes the work much easier and saves
loads of time.
I can't really remember the website for Pspad off the top of my head but you
or me could do a search for it. I am sure Google can find the correct site
among the first 10 displayed links when you search for pspad.
Hope this helps,

Re: [Audyssey] Monty First impressions

2007-07-08 Thread Che
  Thomas,
Please pardon me if I am missing something here, but from what I have
gathered, you have around 100 pre orders for the game that were bought for
$45, most of which James North got, in exchange for turning the project over
to you, is that right?
Again if I am wrong, my apologies, but how are you going to drop the price
now to new buyers when the people who pre ordered will end up paying 10 to
15 dollars more for the same game?
From a fellow developers perspective, this whole arrangement with North
seems like a raw deal for you. From reading your updates from time to time
about Monty, it seems like you have basically re coded the entire game from
scratch yourself, the map generator North provided was unusable to the
blind, and yet you are on the hook for lots of pre orders that won't show
you a penny.
I'm not sure how many copies of Monty you anticipate selling, but based on
the sales of Rail Racer, which I realize has a more narrow market due to its
complexity, if you can hit 300 sales with Monty, you will be doing quite
well.
I am sure there is no way to back out of the deal with North at this
point, even though the difference between what he promised and what he
delivered seems to be more than a small gap, but if there is a way, I would
check into it if I were you.
Lord knows, there is not much money to be had in AG development, but there
is no need to give it away for no good reason my man.
I wish you the best with the game no matter what direction you take business
wise, nobody but a developer knows the work involved in releasing a new
title to the blind.
  Good luck,
  Che

[Audyssey] Space Empires success

2007-07-08 Thread Zachary Kline
Hiya,
I just thought I'd share the discovery of sorts I made in Space Empires.
I'm able to fully move all my ships around from planet to planet and solar
system to solar system using a specific option in the setup dialogues.
There is an option in the dialogues to let you 'have all systems seen'. If
you select this, you'll be able to use your mouse cursor to view warp points
between the systems, as well as planet names within the system. From that
point, it's just a matter of following the game's manual and tutorial
information until you figure it out.
I still hope to hear from the developers on this game, as it seems that
with just a little more work it might become truly accessible to all.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] monte problem

2007-07-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Michael,
That is correct. Torches will be used when they are needed. If you die
and you used one of your torches and you reenter the room you were last
exploring another torch will be used. However, that will limit you to
explore other darkened rooms. It's tricky, but all apart of the
challenge of the game.

 Michael Maslo wrote:
 Thomas:

I just finished normal level with a score of 30,250.

I understand you have to use a torch. Does the torch automatically turn on
when in a dark room right? That is what I read out of the manual. So if I
get killed, that would mean that I have send a torch elsewhere and when I
move further into the game I don't have it available to explore the other
dark rooms. Would that be a safe assumption?

 Hi Che,
Simply put it is a raw deal. As for going back on the contract I can't
and won't do that. However, the games and customers got a better deal of
 this than I did.
By the way, just a correction the prepaid customers paid around $38 to
$40 for there prepaid copies, and the full release was suppose to be
$45. So if I lower the price they didn't loose as much as you think.
Probably about $5.00 which isn't that bad.
