Unfortunately, as I was sending this last bit of info to the list, my
computer rebooted, so I don't think it went through. Also, I forgot to trim
the message size down, but there you go. Here is what I meant to post.

I should say also that you need to have an account with play.net before you
even attempt to connect to the mud with ZMud. The reason for this is
because you are first directed to the simutronics login server which asks
for your username and password. Note, this is not the same as your mud
character name! So you should go to play.net and create an account first.
You get a 30 day trial when you sign up, and you can cancel on the site at
 any time before then.

Last note, I don't think you can just create a regular play.net account from
within ZMud. I just signed up with the simutronics site and then connected
with ZMud, so I could be mistaken.

Hi,
I'd also like to point out that software developers, as a rule, let you
know when there is something significant to report. Otherwise you can
assume he is either busy with his personal life, working on it, there is
no new news to be had, whatever. Badgering the developer for news isn't
exactly going to produce the results you seak, and may just end up
ticking off the developer in the process.
I can't say how many times I've been asked when the next update for
Mysteries of the Ancients will be out. I haven't exactly set a date in
stone, and at best my answer is I am working on it, and sometimes I will
drop a couple of nuggets of bugs I've recently fixed. That probably
isn't the answer the person was looking for, but I didn't have any
answer to give him/her in the first place.

Hi Michael,
I'm not sure about the specific games you are asking about, but I always
check sights like gamefaqs.com and gamespot.com for the latest
walkthroughs, cheats, and game information. Depending on who wrote the
walkthrough they will explain information like that in some detail.
If not you can always sign up for the gamespot.com forums and see if
there is anyone who will take the time to explain it to you. Usually the
people on gamespot.com are friendly to a blind player. I've heard, but
have no experience, that the gamefaq.com forums aren't as friendly or
understanding.

Smile.

Street fighter at least have gotten more playable... The first two SF games,
almost all characters sounded alike, and I certainly had a hard time telling
who was doing what to whom... Probably why I excelled at Chun-Li rofl. And
now, Ken and Ryu sound different from one-another, and so do all the other

I've noticed that on old games you could using timing more. I mean like
you could count so many times and you, for the most part, would know by
playing it, what to do after a certain amount of blocking moves for
example. Like in punch out for the nentendo.

the thing that i have notice is today games are not as easy for a blind
person to play. yesterday games are easy for a blind person to play.
let
me explain this. for an exsample in the mortal kombat games for you
have

to go through the konquest mode and the krytpe to unlock different kind
of stuff. in the wrestling games you have to go throuugh the story
season mode to earn money to unlock different stuff. with the mortal
kombat games from the past the only thing to do to unlock different
stuff

is to do button codes. and with the wrestling games you didn't have to
go through a story mode you just went through a tournament mode. in the
today wrestling games you got to readd some messages to select things
and

if i can't read it then it does me no good. that is why i will be
playing old fighting games because the sound efects that a blind person
can tell somewhat his character and the computer is doing.
the football games are the same way to. i will play audio games more
then i will play my old games that i have on my computer on my super nes
emulater. since people on this list have told me that they will help me
with the menus on the games i need help with i will be looking for help
soon.

Re: [Audyssey] accessible mario game

2009-09-13 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dan,
Yes, there was an accessible Mario game created by Dragon Slayer Games
quite a while back. However, having played the so-called accessible
Mario game and the original I can tell you that the accessible version
was nothing really like the real Mario brothers. Plus it wasn't as
accessible as it could have been. Personally I'd give it a pass even if
you could find it.

Re: [Audyssey] pack man question

2009-09-13 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Nicol,
I think I can answer this one for Phil. It is actually pretty simple in
this case.
Some game companies are more protective than others regarding their
copyrights. Activision, the current copyright holder of various Atari
games, has never been too protective of their older copyrights such as
Packman, Asteroids, etc. I think they realised that they aren't making
much money off of those games these days anyway, and turn a blind eye to
clones and third-party games baring the Packman and Asteroids
trademarks. Besides outright theft of the games using Atari emulators
there are several Linux clones like KDE Packman, Bomberman, Breakout,
Asteroids, and so on that are officially copyright infringement,
Activision could take action, but have never said anything about them.
So what can you assume?
Well, obviously there is always the risk Activision could take action,
but it is unlikely they will. If it is a remote possability they will
attack the mainstream open source comunity with a law suit it is even
less likely they would go after a single blind developer which would be
even less productive.

2009-09-13 Thread michael barnes
i do understand that for some people the newer games are more easyer
for them to play and for some the older games are easyer for them. i
think the reason for me to play old fighting games is because i'm can
move through the menu better then the newer stuff. and i want to be
able to unlock hidden stuff without any sighted person help. exsample
the newer mk games you got to go through the conquest mode to unlock
stuff and you got to go to the graveyard to unlock stuff.

Re: [Audyssey] atari games

THa pacman game is based on the Arcade version, not the Atari one. I'm sure
it would be possible to make accessible games based on Frogger, Donkey Kong
and Cosmic Ark, but as has been pointed out numorous times you really have
to be careful with that. Phil's been lucky since nobody's contacted him
about either Pacman or Sarah, but as Thomas Ward could tell you you can't
count on that. He had at least one developer serve him with a cease and
desist for Montezuma's Return and possibly Montezuma's Revenge as well.,
hence Mysteries of the Ancients. So you really have to be careful when you
start talking about making existing games accessible.

There sure are a lot of references to stories in the Bible in Chronicles of

And yet the author of LOTR himself was a christian and interweeved a lot
of his beliefs into the whole story. So I don't quite get that one.

My grandma is generally like that and so was my very first girlfriend.
You
didn't mention Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or even CHronicles of
Narnia
around them. I found out that they believed Aslan was actually the devil

since God would never give himself any kind of physical representation
or
somesuch. If they'd react that way about books they'd be just as bad
about
games. My x and I got into a big argument about an RPG I happen to be a
fan
of, a series actually, the first of which was called Lufia and the
Fortress
of Doom. Chelsey's problem stemmed partly from the fact that the heroes
were
engaged in battle with four godlike beings called Sinistrals. I guess in
her
mind we hsouldn't fight against a god, however evil he might be. Then
there
was the fact that the characters had to find and use various magical
items
to become more powerful so they would stand a chance.
Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of
pizza?
Vender: No pizza. Only Khlav Kalash.

Hi,
Unfortunately, I've met my fair share of people like that. My in-laws
are
a prime example of the type of bigots that they think they are the

judge,

jury, and executioner on everything and anything regardless if they

know

anything factual about it or not. Such condemning evidence can come

from a

brief commercial, what roomers they have heard, or another Christians
opinion on the subject. in other words they draw their conclusions not

on

facts but on other's subjective opinions, comments, and their own bias

towards this or that.
For example, when I first met my wife her family and I got into a

topic

about movies, entertainment, etc. I made the mistake of mentioning i

was a

big fan of Star Wars. Her parents started in on me right away that

Star

Wars was evil, Satanic, and they had devils in it, etc. It was obvious

from the conversation that they didn't have a clue what Star Wars was
about, and they had a subjective notion based on completely false
information. After arguing back and forth for a while I soon

discovered

they had seen a commercial for the Phantom menace where they had seen

a

brief clip of Darth Maul. They assumed because Darth Maul looked like

a

devil that he was to play the part of Satan in the movie. Their

conclusion

was totally false, of course, but that's how easily they were

convinced

Star Wars is Satanic.
My point is that if people like that want to be taken seriously when
discussing the morality of games, movies, books, whatever they first

have

to get their facts straight. Only facts, not assumptions, will be a

more

effective tool in making their argument and will strengthen their

case.

Simply stating game x, movie x, or book x is evil without offering up

real facts or evidence to back up their opinion is meaningless.

You have to go to file|new|new character, and then select Gemstone III
from the list of muds. Keep in mind though, that this is not a list box,
jaws may not say anything when you land on it, but just hit your up and
down arrow keys to hear the muds. You can also type the first letter of a
mud. Notice I said you will need to select the Gemstone III selection,
rather than Gemstone IV. This, I think, is because III and IV were on the
same server. But, rest assured, you do in fact connect to GemStone IV
even though you are according to ZMud connecting to GemStone III. grin

Hello folks,

I stumbled on the Simutronics muds, and decided to check out the
Gemstone

IV
mud. From what I have been able to gather, the front end clients
they

offer
such as wizard and stormfront are not the most speech friendly
programs

out
there. grin

I did find out that zmud has support for these games. I am currently
using
jaws 10 with zmud 7.21, and I must say that when using jaws with
screen

echo
set to all, I find that zmud does a really good job at rebuffering
the
screen. Jaws doesn't seem to repeat lines, and it does appear to
read

all
the new information that comes in. Of course, you have to use the
jaws

cursor to review the screen, and when a new line of text comes in the
screen
will scroll, making it sometimes dificult to keep on the same line.
All

that said, I am managing quite nicely with the beginning quests.

I was just wondering if any folks on this list have played the
Simutronics
games with zmud, specifically Gemstone IV, and may have some more
tips

they
could share?

Before anyone asks, due to the nature of the login and authentication
of

simutronics games, you can't use other clients such as VIP Mud or
Mushclient
to play. At least this is my understanding.

Sounds like window-eyes is reading text on the screen by itself. Typically,
screen readers do not read the mt output window automatically. It could be that
window-eyes is set to read all text rather than just highlighted text. I don't
know very much about window-eyes, but I believe the command to change that
setting has the letter s in it. It's something like insert+ctrl+s or something.
It might also be that the mud to which you are connecting is highlighting
stuff. I believe you mentioned you are working with Alter Aeon. It could be
that you have color turned on on alter aeon and the mud is highlighting sertain
strings of text and window-eyes is reading those highlighted strings
automatically as they move around on the screen. If this is possibly the
problem, you can type color and press enter. it should say Ansi color off. If
it doesn't, type color a second time. It should say it this time.
