Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Linux Installation Methods

2010-09-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Mike,
I see. Well, all the same the Linux port will be available if you or
anyone else would like to play MOTA and my other games under Linux for
that matter. My intention is to make the installation as painless as
possible. Especially, for those users like yourself who aren't exactly
Linux power users.
I understand you feel Windows is easier than Linux, but to be canded
that's just your personal experience talking. I've been using Linux
software for over ten years, and have been a full time Linux user for
about five or six years. So naturally I could equally claim Linux is
easier than Windows. However, that is a personal opinion, and would be
based soully on my experience rather than fact. However, I expect some
new Linux users, such as yourself, are coming from a Windows
background, and aren't completely familiar with package managers,
commandline tools such as apt-get, etc. Therefore I intend to document
whatever install I go with as best as i can in the manual I really
don't think typing a command like ./install.sh from a terminal window
is especially difficult.

Smile.

Like I said I don't use it full time just play with it once in awhile.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Linux Installation Methods

2010-09-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Um...I think you are missing the point here. Why exactly would I want
to create a third-party program that attempts to detect system
requirements when most Linux distributions have such a program
already?
On Ubuntu, Debian, Vinux, etc it is called apt-get. On Fedora Linux it
is called yum. In any case if I made a *.deb package and did something
like
sudo apt-get install mota-0.14.-i386.deb
apt-get would check what packages were required and install those
automatically for you. Which is precisely why I mentioned creating a
Linux package in the first place using dpkg. Tools like apt-get do all
the work of dectecting requirements and installs them if they are
missing. There is no need to reinvent the wheel here.
If I make a tarball such as a *.tar.gz file all I am doing is creating
a tarball of the games files without any setup ability unless, of
course, I write my own installer using a bash shell script or write a
custom setup program in C/C++. So if I do create a tarball, as you
suggest, I figure people will just extract the files to somewhere in
their home directory and run it from there. That certainly works and i
don't have a problem with that on principle. You just don't get the
advantage of using apt-get or yum to make sure your system has all the
system requirements is all.
However, I suppose given the fact that there are some VI users running
Fedora, Suse, etc I would be safest with a custom installer of some
kind. The Cepstral voices and the Dectalk Software are both installed
using a generic bash shell script you execute from the commandline. I
suppose I can base my install off one of those.

Cheers!

On 9/26/10, shaun everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote:
well I am not a linux user but have had experience.
if you get a tar.gz file and have that install everything though you
 need to unpack it.
Having a zip with the game is probably ok.
then when you run the game for the first time, it will check and grab
and install what you need or you could have an install program which
you would run to install everything after you unzipped the archive.

Re: [Audyssey] Troopanum 2 playthrough

2010-09-27 Thread dark
Imho with the life requirement, bsc really should've made the bombs count as
aships ships landed rather than being instant kills, sinse even if you get
to lord vector without loosing a life that's only 3 bomb hits, which with
the length of the fight seems waay too unfair.

Then again, troop 2 was the first game to try a boss in an audio space
invaders fest, alien outback, dark destroy and judgement day all tried as
well, and the fight against Ather is just cool!

Actually 175 missiles, though I agree, the queen is an awsome boss battle.

I actually think metroid ii is a rather under appreciated game sinse so much
of the physics, and at least half of the weapons which made super metroid a

I agree. That's one reason I didn't play Troopanum 2 very often. THere's
nothing more depressing than getting to the final boss only to have him
waste you with a single attack which you more than likely couldn't even
hear coming at you and therefore couldn't avoid. I'll say this much though,
I did like how the damage sound increased in pitch each time you landed a
successful hit. So you could judge how close you were to victory. Even a
few mainstream games did something like that. Metroid II: Return of Samus
actually did something like that during the final boss battle. Each time
you successfully scored a hit on the Metroid Queen she would scream in
pain. After a certain number of hits (It took pretty close to a hundred
missiles to kill her as I recall as opposed to the riskier method of
dropping fifteen bombs in her stomach), you would notice her screams
increased in pitch. Granted they were just 8-bit Game Boy screams but it
was still pretty cool. And the music in that fight was some of the coolest,
but then again the Metroid series has always been known for its musical
scores right up there with Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Linux Installation Methods

2010-09-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Peter,
Well, if you havent' had much experience with Unix based operating
systems in general I can certainly see how you might be confused. The
most commonly used shell, Bash, is quite a lot different from Dos as
there is a completely different set of shell commands. For example, in
Dos dir gives you a list of files in a directory, but in a Linux shell
environment you use the list source command ls to do the same thing.
If you want to delete a file in Dos you type del filename, but in
Linux it is rm filename. So unless you have actually read a book on
Bash shell commands which are used by Linux, Mac OS, FreeBSD, etc
there is lots of room for confusion in terms of the shell environment.
However, the graphical user interface, Gnome, is quite a lot like
Windows complete with buttons, listviews, checkboxes, and all the rest
of it. In fact, it is close enough to Windows I recently installed
Ubuntu 10 on my wife's computer and she has been using Linux for a
month without any prier experience with Linux before without any
problems. So the graphical environment is fairly intuitive for Windows
users I'd say. My wife hasn't had any serious complaints with Linux in
terms of the Gnome applications. It is just the commandline stuff she
has any real trouble with. Fortunately, though, these days there isn't
a lot of need to use the shell directly.

Smile.

On 9/27/10, peter Mahach piterm...@gmail.com wrote:
yeah, most linux users I know use that. ok, every linux user I know uses
 that, actually.
I don't use linux my self, just tried it in a vm once or twice, but found my
 self thinking it was confusing.
What's weird is that I could wrap my head around dos. I use them command
prompt a lot, I even wrote a batch script to use the command line version of
7zip to extract all sounds at once from my i Tunes app library.

Hi,
I' just installed Debian myself and so a .deb package would be
appreciated.

Best and thanks,

On Mon, 27 Sep 2010, Thomas Ward wrote:

Hi Petr,
You are probably right about that. I've noticed since Ubuntu started
producing an accessible Linux distribution out of the box quite a lot
of the VI Linux users started using Ubuntu. Then, when Vinix came out
several more went that route because Vinux offers a few extras Ubuntu
doesn't such as Speakup precompiled and ready to go. There are
perhaps two or three I know that run Debian itself, but most of the
Debian users went Ubuntu or Vinux last I heard. As a result there is
probably a high percentage that would like a *.deb package for Ubuntu
10.04 and Vinux 3.0. I know of one guy running Suse, and perhaps three
or four running Fedora Linux, but those seam to be the minority now
days.

Cheers!

Yep, generally from what I've played of code factory's stuff they had
potential, not the least because of the amount of cut scenes and dialogue
they had even in basic arcade shooters.

Just a shame they shut down.

That's exactly my problem. I've made it to level 16 a number of times,

Hi, Shaun.
Yes, David apparently has been attempting to fix some of the problems
with compatibility issues with Vista and Windows 7, but I can't say
when he will release said updates to the general public. All I can say
is he showed up on my developers list a few months back looking for
suggestions how to resolve problems with DirectSound 3D buffers
playing back correctly on newer PCs running Windows Vista and Windows
7. Apparently he had found a solution, but as yet there have been no
new versions of Shades of Doom, Tank Commander, etc baring this new
patch. So I guess we all just have to wait and see.
In the mean time if someone owns a copy of VmWare's VMPlayer for
Windows it is a good idea to install XP via a virtual machine and play
games that way. Truth is in terms of accessible games Windows XP is
the best solution right now. It will probably remain so until more
accessible games are updated to support Windows 7 directly, and uses
more up to date technologies like XAudio2 instead of DirectSound.

Cheers!

On 9/25/10, shaun everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote:
yeah this is because the old gma engine uses vb6 code and stuff is
not emulated with directx 8 properly.
As an interim solution, reformat and reinstall xp.
There is supposed to be a new version in the works but thats been
bandied round since win7 came out sertainly for the last 2 years.
If it is being worked on then david is being quite tight lipped on
the progress though we have gotten reports over the works that its
being worked on though not much of that.
I am just happy I still use xp.

Re: [Audyssey] Sarah game

2010-09-27 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Hayden,
The description of the chamber of secrets tunnel was never described so I
designed it as a spiral labyrinth.
I could add a few short cuts but that might make the finding of the snake
door more challenging.
In the update that I am still working on, I allow you to apparate past the
tunnel, and even blast through the earth walls.

Hi,
One thing I find rather annoying is how it takes you so long to get
through

the passage to the chamber of secrets. Turn this way, turn that way, turn
this way...and then to find that you get slaughtered by the basilisk.
Also,

Phil, why did you number the chapters like you did.

Best Regards,
Hayden

Hi, Peter.
Smile. Don't feel so bad. Usually I do a lot worse with Troopenum.
I've never actually completed Troopenum 2. I usually end up destroyed
before I reach level 16. So you did quite good compared to my normal
average.

Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] R[Audyssey) I'HONE GAMES

2010-09-27 Thread Charles Rivard
Putting all of them together? How do you mean? Are you working on creating
a .zip file containing a folder or more? I had thought of doing that, but
haven't gotten around to it. I was thinking of making folders for Lone Wolf
missions, a SOD folder, a GTC folder, a Super Liam folder, and so on. Then
put those into one .zip file called Raul's Audio Walk Throughs or something
like that.
