That is understandable sky, but I would've thought Jeff could at least tell us that if it is the case. Also, if his daughters' condition has progressed to the point where he can no longer maintain the company, why not do as Dan Z did and make his games abandonware? Finally, it really! wouldn't be so hard for him to setup downloads for the games, rather than this cd ordering business, also far less work for him sinse he'd no longer have to actively send out copies of the games. Re: [Audyssey] Your Opinion on Game Development Documentation
Hello Thomas, I am hosting a web site full of resources that blind or visually impaired people might be interested. Would you not object if I were to link your developer site to one of my categories? I believe you can start with something simple, such as Visual Basic or HOP. May I make another suggestion? If you can add links to accessible programming environments as well, that would be excellent. Alfredo On Jan 20, 2012, at 8:44 PM, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, I've started working on the USA Games developers website http://developers.usagamesinteractive.com and before I really get started on the language tutorials and things like that I'd like to get an idea of what you guys want me to do first. We've got a lot of different programming languages to cover such as Python, Java, as well as C# .NET, VB .NET, AND C++. I'm able to write and provide documentation for any and all, but it might help if I get an idea from you where you'd like me to begin. While Python is definitely easy enough for beginners I think there is already enough free documentation available on python.org and through the PyGame documentation that there are already enough beginner resources to get people started. All I'd have to do is perhaps link to them and my job is done unless you want me to attempt to write something that goes into more depth. Java is also doable and good free documentation is sometimes hard to come by. While there are free language tutorials like Thinking in Java is a great intro to the language the authors fail to write from an accessibility standpoint. I think Java could use some documentation written from a blind programmers perspective where SWT is the graphics API is used as the toolkit rather than Swing. Plus I've looked at JInput and Joal and while the APIs are decent enough for game programming the documentation isn't in a form for a beginner. I think this needs some tutorials aimed at a new Java game developer. What do you think? Finally, there is C# .NET and Visual Basic .NET. There is a lot of good commercial documentation for these languages, but not a lot of free documentation. While there are good resources on the languages I've found documentation on things like SlimDX very thin. Often the SlimDX developers point you to the Microsoft DirectX documentation that is geared for a C++ developer. Clearly this isn't going to work if you don't already know C++ and can translate the code examples into C# .NET or VB .NET in your head. Since I know C# .NET very well, and have been working on building a game engine for .NET languages I think that this might actually be the best place to start. I'd even be willing to release a public version of G3D.dll for .NET developers to help ease people's transition to C# .NET or VB .NET. Any thoughts on this? Re: [Audyssey] personal opinion of bavisoft
Well Jim. That may be true but that don't give them any reason for taking people money and don't give them any software. That is why I think that someone should find out who is the webmaster and tell that person what they have been doing. Then when the person takes their site down the games can then be free. If Bavisoft don't want people to pass out their games to other people who wants to check them out then they need to get on the ball with the program. I know that people have to work to live but they should do two things, one find someone to run the company or two close their company down, or three just have a download link on the site so when people order the games they could get a automatic key for the games through email like PCS and other companies do. -- Email services provided by the System Access Mobile Network. One of the top ten laws of business, and in a lot of states law. All states have laws for selling and there are also federal laws that have to be considered too. Just like in Ohio. Lots of stores have a no refund, but give exchange. Here in Ohio it states that you are aloud a total refund within 30 days of purchase. i have had many live up to that law including Walmart! Now when your dealing with other states. You go buy there state law and federal law. At 08:25 AM 1/21/2012, you wrote: Here is the thing that Bavisoft forgot, the customer is always right. Re: [Audyssey] Your Opinion on Game Development Documentation
Hi Thomas. This is a good idea, but I'd suggest focusing on subjects that are not so widely published on, such as the things you mentioned(swt, slimDX etc). As you are currently working mainly in c#, why not start there and do some slim DX tutorials? As for vb6 tutorials, though it is popular, I think you would agree with me that its time is passing very quickly. For the same reason I would also not suggest a small or unknown language. Start with something that is an industry standard. Also maybe tutorials that are language unspecific that teach general purpose game concepts would be useful. An example is collision detection (basic bounded box and more advanced), movement in 3d, or a simple guide on planning a game and different possible planning stratigies. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] For Philip re: BGT interfaces vs inheritance.
I'd post this question on the Blastbay forum, but I haven't received my approval yet. What is the use case for an interface v. classic inheritance in object definitions? I've looked through the BGT documentation and I sort of understand that you'd use an interface when you have some dissimilar objects that share a method, like the birds and musical instruments both being sound sources, to go with the example in your language tutorial. But I don't understand what this gains me in terms of programming convenience or code compaction. Could you clarify this a bit? Re: [Audyssey] For Philip re: BGT interfaces vs inheritance.
Hi Chris, I can try. As Philip says in the documentation inheritance is used when you have objects that are similar and share common variables and methods. An interface is used when you have two different classes that are very different but need to share one or more functions or variables. What this gains you is you don't have a lot of extra methods and variables hanging around that you don't need. Keep in mind every variable you create in a class gets loaded onto the heap in memory that could be used for something else. There is no sense inheriting a super class if all you need is one variable and related functions that interact with that variable. Instead you can move that variable and related functions to an interface that can be shared between the two classes without dumping a bunch of unnecessary variables onto the heap. Does that make sense? On 1/21/12, Christopher Bartlett themusicalbre...@gmail.com wrote: I'd post this question on the Blastbay forum, but I haven't received my approval yet. Re: [Audyssey] personal opinion of bavisoft
Hi Dark, Agreed. Caring for his daughter is an understandable reason but not an excuse for not answering e-mails, switching to downloads instead of cds, etc. He doesn't even have to add a license key to his games, because if he writes a good shopping cart in something like php he can store the setup files somewhere secure on his server, and when payment is complete the script will send the user a temporary link that will expire after a couple of days. This would automate both payment and delivery leaving him free to care for his daughter if that is the case. Re: [Audyssey] Your Opinion on Game Development Documentation
Hi Willem, Yes, that is pretty much what I was thinking of doing. C# .NET is a great beginners language, and SlimDX does need some .NET documentation and code examples as pointing people to the C++ DirectX documentation doesn't work for new beginners just learning to program games. I was fortunate that I knew both languages so that I could look at the C++ code examples and figure out what I had to do in C# .NET and could translate that to Visual Basic .NET as well. That would be a big help for potential .NET developers. Which brings me to a point you brought up in your message. I was not considering writing up any documentation for Visual Basic 6. I feel that the language is passed its prime and we as developers need to move on. So when I say Visual Basic or VB I'm talking about something like Visual Basic 2010 and .NET 4.0. That's a different subject altogether. In terms of programming languages I plan to do language tutorials, write sample code, and write API documentation if necessary for the top four or five languages that are industry standards. That would include C++, Java, C# .NET, Python, and VB .NET. I'm not going to do tutorials for things like AutoIt and Javascript simply because I don't think they are appropriate for game programming. Other languages like Perl, Ruby, etc probably aren't that good for game programming either. Although, I've heard of an SDL binding for Perl that makes it possible for writing games. Microsoft's Visual J# is apparently some sort of .NET clone of Java, but its so off the wall I haven't met a developer who knows and uses it so documenting the language is a waste of time. Visual Basic 6, as I mentioned above, is passed its prime and I wouldn't recommend it to a developer wishing to write games for Windows 7 and Windows 8. VB 2010 is a better solution in that case. As far as general programming design goes you are correct. There are a lot of generic concepts that need to be covered. Especially, in terms of math because if someone hasn't had geometry, trigonometry, or calculus they may have difficulty designing a game simply because lack of skills in non-programming related areas. Even in programming areas such as artificial intelligence, colision detection, etc pretty much require a discussion of their own. Cheers! On 1/21/12, Willem Venter dwill...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Thomas. Re: [Audyssey] Your Opinion on Game Development Documentation
Hi Alfredo, Sure. I don't have anything on the developers site yet, but as soon as I get the website setup you can link to it. that's the point of creating it. :D As for downloads and things like that I definitely plan on it. I'll have links to Visual Studio Express, an up to date copy of Python 2.7, the Java JDK, Eclipse, etc. Basically, if its accessible and free I'll be putting it up for download as I want all of this stuff to be easy to find and download. No sense in documenting the languages and APIs if its hard to find and get the proper tools for the job. As far as languages see my prior message. I won't be discussing Visual Basic 6 at all, and I havent a clue what HOP is. What is Hop? Cheers! So basically I either need to find an extremely awesome strategy or I'm going to have to restart my game and build up more resources before I hit stage 25. I really wish he would have translated at least that dialogue that tells you you're going to be locked into stage 25 before you went in, that would have been my queue to go build up a ton of resources. Ironically the only translated text I've seen at all in the entire game aside from menues is a part during the battle, and that line is pretty much unnecessary. -- From: Clement Chou chou.clem...@gmail.com Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2012 08:27 PM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Bokurano Daiboukenn 25-3 Okay. I can't get the equasion to either copy or solve correctly, so I can't figure it out. It's only supposed to be a 3 didget number, but all the answers I get are 6 didgets with decimals. Can anyone shed some light on this? I can't do anything else in the game since all the previous stages are locked, so I'd really like to complete this stage and move on. Re: [Audyssey] swamp help for a beginner
HI, Some suggestions: 1. Listen to a walk thru that Valiant 66 did. The link is http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13968355/swamp%20playthrough.mp3 The walk thru is from an earlier version, but should help you a lot. 2. In the swamp folder, there are 3 files you need to check out; Readme.txt - gives you the main keystrokes you will need. Changelog.txt - gives you more up to date info you will need. Plus how some things work. keyconfig.ini - gives you all the keys you will need. you can modify this file if you wish. disregard the section on you and a injured person. That scenario is for single player and that part is not developed and is not even in the current 1.8 version. 3. While in the game, you can chat with others and ask them questions as you go. 4. The entrance for the safe zone is 41 south. This is your second number when checking coordinates. The coordinate system is where the 1st number is your X axis, or east - west. The 2nd number is the Y axis, or north - south. So in the upper north west corner is 1,1. You move east, and the first number gets bigger. Go south, and the second number gets bigger. 5. You get experience and rep from killing zombies. 6. You get ammo, weapons, and armor from 2 sources. When you kill a zombie, it leaves a corpse. After a bit of time, which is random, it will be swarming with a fly sound. Walk over it and it will give you something. The second method is to buy it in the safe zone. This costs rep. So if you don't need, or want something, donate it and increase your rep to buy those things you want. 7. Stand in the safe zone and check out all your keys. Make sure you know what, and where they are. One very helpful thing in the beginning is to use your beacons. This will help you find the safe zone. 8. When you start to loose health, go to the safe zone and exit. come back and you will be at full health. HTH. I read the instructions for the game and it said that when I start I am in a hallway with my mate. However when I start the game I am in the safe zone and I do not know where to go. I turn on my sonar and I hear beeps but do not fully understand on how to get out of the area and start shooting. The instructions are vague. How do I pick up things and how do I get better stuff and reputation? Any help for a true new newbie would be appreciated. Re: [Audyssey] For Philip re: BGT interfaces vs inheritance.
Hi Christopher, The use case is if you have a lot of classes that should implement the same interface, and you want to be able to work with this given interface without needing to know which type of class you're actually dealing with as long as that interface is present. Personally I don't use this feature very often, though. What is the username that you registered on the forum? I will go and approve it.
