2012-01-24 Thread shaun everiss

it depends on what you were brought up on.
I only got into human speech in 2001
I was brought up firstly with the keynote gold, then the gemini,
then orpheus1.
I have been able to stand espeak for ages and actually like it over
some human sounding systems, but then its the background.

Dos was the only system I had for the first 5 years.
then windows 9x for about 8 years still on the same setup.
I never got into real voices till 2008.
And it was only through fortune of getting someone's jaws8 realspeak
image that I even bothered with human voices at all.
Its doubtfull that I will ever get lagit voices since I don't really
care but if I ever buy it will be the english, us and au and maybe uk
ivonas 100 for each pack, english uk and us which supports nvda so 200.

I may also get a japanese voice for some games to.
But thats a major if now.
At 01:35 a.m. 24/01/2012 -0500, you wrote:

That's definitely unusual. In my case listening to some of the

human the voice like Eloquence or ESpeak the more irritating I find
it. I guess I've adapted to Eloquence and ESpeak, as I use them all
the time with NVDA, but the more human voices like the ATT voices are
definitely preferable in terms of human quality. I find games that use
human voices for menus, status messages, much better.

2012-01-24 Thread Pitermach
Personally I'm the opposite as far as eloquence goes. Its UK accent just
sounds wrong to me for some reason. The interesting part though is that
I totally think the reverse with eSpeak. I like its UK accent but can't
stand the US one.
As far as the more natural voices, my favourites would probably be
neospeech Paul, acapela Peter and Ivona Geraint (that one came out a
week ago or so, so it's quite new).

Oh and yes, I also prefer human speech verses TTS

I also agree I can put up with almost any SAPI voice for menus and
things like that, but not for cutscenes and game commentary. One of
the things that bothers me about the wrestling game I'm working on is
commentary.

Right now any time you perform a move SAPI acts as a ring side
commintator. Ok, it works, but I can't get into it. I'd prefer a human
to actually call out the moves rather than SAPI.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Hi Dark

2012-01-24 Thread Thomas Ward
HI,

If you can get use to a Keynote you can pretty much listen to anything
after that. Lol!

I had a multilingual Keynote for high school and college because at
the time it was the most accurate when it came to doing French and
English. The multilingual Braille N' Speaks slottered the languages
and Eloquence wasn't yet a part of Jaws. So the Keynote was the best
solution at the time for foreign languages, but the voice was
definitely unique.

To say the least unless I was working on French class that thing sat
on a shelf unused and I pretty much used a Dectalk Express 24/7. It
was probably the most human sounding hardware synth on the market back
in the 90's.

[Audyssey] game speech

2012-01-24 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Dark,

Sorry about the Hi Dark subject. Don't know how I did that.

I see what you mean, but Homer Simpson is almost not like a Human voice to me.
He is a cartoon voice. Kind of like if I had been more of a Flintstones fan
and used Fred Flintstones voice rather than Homer's.

I do see though like with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Automan and even Maggie's
car horn in Homer on a Harley. It is hard though to find and edit bits of
speech out of TV shows, movies etc and find everything that you need for a game.

2012-01-24 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Charles,

I think that all of the different accents of people and voice actors across the
U. S. and the rest of the world might be part of my problem with human speech
in games. Some accents do really get on my nerves. Not so much talking with a
person on the phone, but over and over in a game.

I like ATT Crystal for Email and in games. I also use ATT Charles, ATT Lauren,
ATT Audrey and Neo Speech Kate for games. Which is really a huge improvement over what I
used to play games for over a dozen years. I had a dos computer running an Accent SA for that
dozen or so years. And then a Double Talk for a couple of years. And I still run a Triple
Talk on my game development computer. Not for game play, but for VB6 programming and other
regular computer use.

not a screen reader issue. I've experienced similar behavior occasionally
 from the audiogames.net forum site.

 Anyone know what's going on?

Re: [Audyssey] blastbay forum appears to be freezing my IE8.

2012-01-24 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Willem,

I think I will end up writing my own when I have the time. I didn't get in
touch with the developers of the StopBots extention, because after trying it
for a time I decided that I didn't really like the way it operated and I am
okay for the time being with the post and registration approval extention
that I put in place instead. These bots I removed had registered before I
put the approval system in place and I simply hadn't realized they were
actually there.

Kind regards,

Hi Philip.
Hi Philip. Did the developers respond to your bug reports? The
spammers won't stop, so it is either writing your own checker or
dealing with bots as you currently are doing.

can find another similar extention to put in PunBB.

Hi philip.
Have you investigated putting some test for humanness into the forum
application process?

I am not talking about captchas with pictures. Rather randomly ask a
question like
Type in the developer of BGT's name.
What is twenty-five plus thirty six?
Type the second letter from your given username.

and other similar questions like that which most spammers won't be
able to automate, but is still simple enough for most users to answer.

It may be that the database is getting overloaded with unapproved spam

Re: [Audyssey] game speech

2012-01-24 Thread dark

I'm not sure Jim.

sinse obviously Homer though a cartoon character is intended as a human
being, albeit a rather stupid one at times, therefore to me would be
just the same as using the voice of Luke Skywalker, Captain Picard, the
Terminator or any other character from a tv program or film.

If your game includes those characters, it's best if you can have their
voices, however your game might be an original project and include entirely
new! characters which imho have to have their own voices.

Look at Airik the clerric. Airik is a distinct person with his own voice (in
fact Bryan P's voice), and now if anyone else wanted to write a game with
Airik, it'd make sense that they have to have Bryan.

That was why in Tdv, Munawar returned to play the agent from Treasurehunt,
sinse that agents' voice was! effectively munawars.

Does that make sense?

Myself I'd view most game characters as just as real as characters in a
film, play, or any other form of artistic expression, and obviously then you
want them as well portrayed as possible.

Fair enough if you prefer sapi for everything Jim, I just find that a rather
strange preference myself for the above reason.

Hi Dark,

Sorry about the Hi Dark subject. Don't know how I did that.

I see what you mean, but Homer Simpson is almost not like a Human voice to
me. He is a cartoon voice. Kind of like if I had been more of a
Flintstones fan and used Fred Flintstones voice rather than Homer's.

I do see though like with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Automan and even
Maggie's car horn in Homer on a Harley. It is hard though to find and
edit bits of speech out of TV shows, movies etc and find everything that
you need for a game.

[Audyssey] podcast on Storm8 games

2012-01-24 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi all. I finally got the iPhone 4S and am happily using it. I think
that my son has used Siri more than I have at this point. Anyway, lately
I've been playing games from Storm8 and am wondering if others here
might be interested in me doing a podcast on them in case they are
either playing them and need pointers, or in case they never heard of
them and want to try out a new kind of game.

So, over the next few days I'm going to put together a podcast which
shows these great games.

Cheers.

[Audyssey] Mush Z music stil wonky

2012-01-24 Thread dark
Hi.

this is really for Oriol, but if anyone else can give advise that would help a
lot.

I've redownloaded and instaleld a fresh copy of Mush z from the website but
stil! my background music and ambience aren't playing as they should.

They get randomly muted as I change areas, indeed gads' landing and the arcase
trailles have no music at all and whatever I do can't bring it back, while the
viking village raid has no ambience.

I'm not sure wht the heck is going on, and any advise would be appreciated.
This happens both on my desktop and laptop, and with a fresh install, so the
problem probably isn't at my end, of course I've tried looking in config,
typing config music etc but once again no go.

Sinse the music and ambience are things I really! appreciate in Alter, I'd
deffinately like them back.

eware the grue!

Sorry for my late response on this, the topic was just brought to my
attention today.
I would just like to thank Eleanor, Cynthia and the rest of the gang
at 7128 for being open minded about their process and making changes to
their list this year, allowing Blind Adrenaline to be listed in the top 25..
Also, to Dark's point, the information about Blind Adrenaline being
inactive since 2009 is completely my fault.

Cynthia had emailed me about a week ago asking if there were any
changes that needed to be made to my listing, and I was out of town and
unable to keep up with my email.
It is true we're very active however, and in fact our dice game Yacht
is up for game of the year voting at Blind Bargains website:

http://blindbargains.com/awardvote11.php

You can go to that site and vote on several categories for accessible
awards of the year, including accessible game of the year.
While I am shamelessly self promoting here, if you want to check out
Yacht, you can play for free for 30 days, and we have two yacht

monday at 8 PM eastern and Wednesday at 3 PM eastern. Its a very
popular event.

least update the link so that people don't get a 404.

Also, though Blind adrenaline itself in terms of it's site and rail
racer haven't been updated sinse 2009, work goes on constantly on the
cardroom with weekly tournaments and other events. Just this year Yacht,
the game best known as Yahtzee was added, along with the omahar varient
of Texus holdem poker. i also think Spades was added earlier in the year
too. So it is in a very different state to say Draconis that really
hasn't! shown any life sinse 2009.

then, Nielsbauer actually have two acessible games, sinse smugglers 3 is
also accessible. They are however tyring to get interest in their
Empires and dungeons game, and if they get enough from the eyeball
defficient community they will make an access mode for it, so you might
want to put a more prominant announcement on there.

Lastly, not that it particularly matters, but the audiogames.net db is
actually up to 392 games now, though sinse that'll probably be going up
this week as I add some pages that isn't a major factor, I just thought
I'd mention it :d.

I'm actually looking forward to the big 400, which hopefully should be
soon.

Beware the grue!

Subject: [Audyssey] 2012 Top 25 List for Gamers who are Blind

Hi gamers

Our Top 25 Lists for 2012 have been published. In response to the
comments made on Audyssey, we revised our criteria and have added a
listing of online games. Although we don't feel we can adequately rank
them, we listed them in one location so people who want to try online
games can know where to go.

The ranking criteria can be found at the end of the page. We adhere to
the criteria, and where it appears that a website is not in the order
you would expect, try to explain the reason they are in that location.
It is a lot of work, but we feel we add value in our analysis of the
sites and their offerings as well as giving you an easy way to get
directly to the best sites for gamers who are blind.

Please check the list out at our website, www.7128.com and select the
Top 25 button at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!

Re: [Audyssey] Teraformer

2012-01-24 Thread dark

Hi nicole.

No, there isn't a walkthru, though I suppose I could write one, but really
the game isn't too difficult provided you take note of where you are. The
layout is very easy, and there are plenty of stations to go back to and
recharge your energy if it drops too low.

As to the atmosphere yes, that is the games' difficulty. If the dropping
energy limit wasn't there it'd be way too easy, and as I said this
difficulty isn't too hard as long as you make use of every recharge station.

As I said, once you've finished the training, head streight north through
several rooms until you get to the communicator. Listen to the messages on
that, then take either the west or east path, sinse there's a computer part
and a small challenge on each.

to the east is a puzzle to match up sound sources to deactivate a robot, and
to the west are three tone wheel controls. You'll have to do both to get
both computer parts.

[Audyssey] swamp and saving

2012-01-24 Thread Dallas O'Brien
hi, just wanting to find out for sure the process here. in the older
game, it seemed that you had to go to the safe zone, and hit escape
twice, once to take you to the menu, and again to return to the game to
save it.
now i don't know if that is right, as its just what i was lead to
believe at the time.
but, never the less, just trying to find out exactly how your char is
saved on the latest one. is it just when you walk in to safe zone its
saved? or is that hitting escape twice still the way to do it. perhaps
it should actually be a command on the save zone menu?

best regards

About half the time when I go to post something on the blast bay forum, my

not a screen reader issue. I've experienced similar behavior occasionally

Re: [Audyssey] game speech

2012-01-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Agreed. Back when I originally created STFC I scrounged the internet
plus wwent through my TNG shows to get decent recordings of Picard
saying things like fire photon torpedoes, fire phasers, on screen,
engage, and so on. It made the game extremely realistic as the orders
to perform various actions sounded like the TV show. Having a TTS
voice announce those things never felt that realistic to me.

I think if I were to do a new Star Trek game I'd get one of our
talented voice actors to speak various commands like arm phasers, arm
photon torpedoes, arm quantum torpedoes, all stop, etc as that would
really make that that much better. When an enemy ship approaches
having the captain ordering the crew to battle stations really would
make it more realistic.

I don't care if Crystal or some other SAPI voice speaks menus, status
reports, etc as you'd expect a computer voice for interacting with
ship functions anyway. However, a human is better for the captain and
crew. Even a quick aye Sir from the helm, tactical, or ops station
is realistic where SAPI voices would be out of place.

just the same as using the voice of Luke Skywalker, Captain Picard, the

 Beware the grue!

[Audyssey] Babisoft games crashing

2012-01-24 Thread Keith S
Hi, I know that there has been a lot of talk regarding Babisoft's lack of
contact with purchasers of their games, but I have a question regarding the
actual play of the games, or rather, how they play on Win XP sp 3 machines.
Chillingham will suddenly quit on me, and Grizzly Gulch will lock up and
disappear from my Windows Task Manager, but when I restart my system, it asks
me if I want to end Girzzly Gulch. This has been happening when I get into a
gun fight in the bank, after I purchase a gun at the goods sotre.

Also, I was able to play both games fine until today (i installed both games 3
days ago).

Not quite sure what's going on with the games and the interaction on my system.

Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] swamp and saving

2012-01-24 Thread Richard Sherman
HI,

Saving the game is still the same. First off, you must be in the safe zone
to save your character. Pressing the esc key anywhere else does not save
your info. Press the esc key to save your stats. Press it again to return to
the game, or arrow to exit if you wish.

Putting this option on the safe zone menu sounds clunky and I really don't
like the idea at all. It's really just that easy, press the esc key in the
safe zone twice, and then go on with your game. Much quicker and easier in
my opinion.

[Audyssey] swamp idea for map 3

2012-01-24 Thread Steady Goh
Hi Jeremy,
My random thought for another map for swamp. The whole thing is an open
concept, no save zone, no buildings and no obstacles. Only a transport station.
the map size is just half or maybe even smaller the current map1, about 200 by
200 or even shrink to 100 by 100. not too sure about that. The number of
zombies and loots spond remains the same as the existing map. So is kind of
like a survival mode where we have many concentrated at a small area.
The way to enter that area is by some kind of transport or teleporter which
goes back and forth regularly between a certain spot in sz to map 3 transport
station. And that teleporter only activates at an interval of not less than one
minute. To return to sz, we will have to wait at that transport station for the
teleporter. If we are lucky, it will arrive within seconds. While waiting we
still have to defend ourselves.

Don't really care for the open design- cause then anyone with enough rep for
ammo and a vulcan or m60 can just go in any time and power level like mad
since if there's no buildings in the way, one can just hold down the trigger
and sweep left to right and back again and off tons of zombies that way.

made use of/played around with in the front-end, and, yes, it's a bit
simple for now, but anyway...smile

How are audio games designed, and who can I contact about designing
audion games for me? I'm a budding novelist, and want to sell or have
sold audio games for my universe. How would work, like would I send them
the books, and they turn one into a game?

Re: [Audyssey] Game Design

Hi Nicole.
Firstly let me say that there is a big difference between a book and a
game derived from that same book. You will have to decide what type
of game you want to make. Interactive fiction and role playing games
is closer to the book form than a strategy game or fps. When you write
a story you can plan all the characters actions in advance, but with a
game you need to give a player some choices and think about the
results of those choices.

I know I might be stating the obvious to you, but I feel I need to
explain my advice. First choose the type of interaction the player
should have, then decide on the plot and flow of the game. If there
are actions in the game that depend on player stats or chance, give a
little mind to how it might work.

If you want to try programming, look at the resources Thomas
mentioned. This is your best bet on getting a game from your story. If
that does not work out, you might try to tempt someone on a list by
sending a short outline of the story and hoping for the best, but
writing a game with someone looking over your shoulder can be a
challenge for a programmer.

I know all this is full of generalities, but I hope it helps. Everyone
works out their own methods in the end.

One,you could learn a general all purpose programming language and how
to program games from scratch. I run a list specifically designed for
 this purpose on

 and that is one option.

the other is to buy Philip's BGT game programming toolkit which will
save you time, and perhaps be a little easier. You can get that from

as well as join the BGT forum.

2012-01-24 Thread Nicole Valicia Thompson-Andrews
Roll playing audio is the game type. I've just signed up tp the list, and
added Philip to my contancts along with Thomas. Your next. I'm thinking the
game is based on the universe Yemora, and they pick from characters from
different books and stories. Where would I get the voices, I want to use
real people like like Phil Vlaysak. What about sound effects, and compilers?
Or should I just concentrate on the stories and have someone else design the
game? Would I be able to do both?

2012-01-24 Thread Steady Goh

Every one you kill there is another spond somewhere. What you said is true
in a way but constantly against hundreds might not be as easy as you make it
sounded. The time you take to reload and healing is their chance. + weapons
get broken. Have you done missions yet? From the way you said, you must be a
very good guard.
Anyway, after a certain point, rep won't mean much. I am at lvl 79 and have
16 rep in my 1.8 account. I can easily afford 10 of each weapons. Even
so, I'm not sure i can survive the attack.
Anyhow, this idea just came to mind. Jeremy might not put it in at all.

Don't really care for the open design- cause then anyone with enough rep
for ammo and a vulcan or m60 can just go in any time and power level like
mad since if there's no buildings in the way, one can just hold down the
trigger and sweep left to right and back again and off tons of zombies
that way.

Re: [Audyssey] game speech

2012-01-24 Thread dark

Hi tom.

That is absolutely true, though of course in stfc you did have the advantage
of finding a synth voice that was in keeping with the game itself, sinse the
one you used does sound quite a lot like the trek computer, though
having human crew of course would be deffinately preferable for the
atmosphere it would provide, even if you kept the synth saying things like
numeric status information of ships' shields, reading menues etc.

Hi Dark,

However, a human is better for the captain and
crew. Even a quick aye Sir from the helm, tactical, or ops station
is realistic where SAPI voices would be out of place.

sinse obviously Homer though a cartoon character is intended as a human
being, albeit a rather stupid one at times, therefore to me would be
just the same as using the voice of Luke Skywalker, Captain Picard, the
Terminator or any other character from a tv program or film.

If your game includes those characters, it's best if you can have their
voices, however your game might be an original project and include
entirely

new! characters which imho have to have their own voices.

Look at Airik the clerric. Airik is a distinct person with his own voice
(in

fact Bryan P's voice), and now if anyone else wanted to write a game with
Airik, it'd make sense that they have to have Bryan.

That was why in Tdv, Munawar returned to play the agent from
Treasurehunt,

sinse that agents' voice was! effectively munawars.

Does that make sense?

Myself I'd view most game characters as just as real as characters in a
film, play, or any other form of artistic expression, and obviously then
you

want them as well portrayed as possible.

Fair enough if you prefer sapi for everything Jim, I just find that a
rather

strange preference myself for the above reason.

Beware the grue!

no idea what is happening wwith chillingham, but with grizly gulch, bavisoft
do have a patch they produced because apparently the game was having

i found myself on some xp machines that if you don't have that patch in the

suggest havinga look at that.

Hi, I know that there has been a lot of talk regarding Babisoft's lack of
contact with purchasers of their games, but I have a question regarding
the actual play of the games, or rather, how they play on Win XP sp 3
machines.
Chillingham will suddenly quit on me, and Grizzly Gulch will lock up
and disappear from my Windows Task Manager, but when I restart my system,
it asks me if I want to end Girzzly Gulch. This has been happening when I
get into a gun fight in the bank, after I purchase a gun at the goods
sotre.

Also, I was able to play both games fine until today (i installed both
games 3 days ago).

Not quite sure what's going on with the games and the interaction on my
system.

Thanks
