Re: [Audyssey] New member looking for where to go to play games

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello Christina,

Off the top of my head you may want to try Audiogames.net which has a
huge database of games you can download and play including developer,
website, and other information. That would be the easiest way to find
out what you are looking for.
Cheers!

Hi John, thanks, I think I'm getting it now. One other thing I'm wondering
is what is the squishing sound I keep hearing after the rats attack me,
does
it mean I've been poisoned? It seems to stop once I take the supliment.
Also, how do you go about killing ghosts? I find if I'm running flat out
and run into one, then I'm more likely to die fast, so should I stop and
keep swinging my knife until I hit her? I'm onto level 2 now, and trying

Also I love the healing spring, it's got such a lovely sound. :)

Make sure you clear out the enemies first.
Also, don't wait until you hear the jump sound. Press up and right as

Re: [Audyssey] subscription links to other english speaking gaming mailing lists

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

If you are talking about general purpose blind gaming lists I am
unaware of any others. Audyssey has been the primary gaming list for
the blind for close to 20-years now, and there really aren't any other
mailing lists with the same kind of community or support. The only
other primary resource is the Audiogames.net Forum which has a larger
community, but is a forum not a mailing list.

There are other blind gaming lists, but all of those are run by the
developers themselves in order to discuss their particular products.
For instance, the GMA Talk list is specifically there for discussing
GMA's titles like Lone Wolf, Time of Conflict, Tank Commander, but is
not there for discussing other companies games. If you would like a
list of subscription information for private mailing lists I may be
able to help with that although all of the gaming lists are restricted
to specific games.

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Will,

Essentially the way these gamebooks work is you load them up in your
favorite web browser and follow the story. Along with it you will need
a dice rolling program such as GMA Dice and a text editor like notepad
to keep track of your stats.

As you move through the gamebook's story you will need to roll the
dice and compare it to various stats to figure out if you succeeded or
failed to perform a task. It is a lot more manual than a traditional
game, but quite a lot like traditional D&D except for the fact you are
playing by yourself rather than with a group.

Re: [Audyssey] The gate, the first boss

2015-10-16 Thread Milos Przic

Hello all,
If the game has only 10 levels, therefore 3 more related to the demo
version, and 5 bosses (so those 3 levels should then be those 3 bosses), I
think that even the current price is too high for the content that will be
unlocked. 10, even 15 dollars would be more realistic for that. On the other
hand, for their another title, Psyco Strike, I would have given even more
money as unlocking the demo gives many more possibilities.
I didn't want to talk against anyone on the list or to discourage the work
of the developers, no, I wish them to keep up the good work, but for this
game I see the price unrealistic.

Thanks to al in advance, and best regards!

Brian: I ordinarily wouldn't give spoilers step by step on killing a
boss, but in this particular case I'll be nice. When you start the
level, as she draws close to you, jump over and away, toward the
right. You have a lot more room to maneuver away from the staircase.
Usually three jumps after she is behind you is far enough away.
Quickly turn and shoot, and as you do, immediately jump back to the
left. Again, three jumps past her should give you enough time to turn
and shoot. Remember to jump quickly after the arrow leaves your bow.
Repeat, right, then left, then right, then left, three jumps past her,
until she's dead.

You're correct about the poison, every time you hear that sound you lose 1%
health (on easy, at least).
As far as ghosts go you're probably best off stopping until you get a really
good feel for the game - I've managed to kill one or two moving, but its a
major risk.
For the statues, you can either just keep wacking it until its dead, or use
your bow. They have a lot of hp, so make sure either that you have full
health or that you've got arrows.

figure out how I'm holding my hand when I'm doing it right, but it's tricky
when there's lots going on around me. I've hit the right arrow as soon as I
hear Patric's voice make the jump sound, and sometimes I clear the hole, but
even with the right arrow and up held down I more often than not die. It's
really frustrating trying to get the timing just right. Especially as I
want to pass the first level, and buy the game.

Re: [Audyssey] games for IOS?

2015-10-16 Thread Rajmund
Hello Devin,
LOL, please, don't get me started. I do keychat, everything.. But LOL, I've
been playing text adventures on the braillenote in class before. Some curses,
some anchorhead, some... Well, whatever, really. Rate 16 speech rate, no visual
display. Noone can prove I've done it. I think they do know I use chat and
email, but they can't prove it. The work is done, so they have no rights to
yell. Wow! See? I never was, I'm using my own gmail, for which noone knows the
password but I do. And the BN is not restricted, and they can't even use it,
so, again, I was perfectly fine. Oh, people watch football in class here, or
youtube, or FB, for that matter. I have a class like this, 4 times a week. So
that's the emailing time right now. I'm not regretting it, either. Why should I
be all stressed about the work? We're kids, after all, we need fun. I actually
find chatting on English the best, they think you're writing, when you're
actually responding to the friend.
Oh, I already have an own Apple ID, I didn't log them out, though, and have
IMessage. In terms of games, does that change anything? Or would I still need
to go to the app store? I can't change the apple ID, but I have made one. LOL,
they'll never know. I was never caught, and I never involve anyone but myself,
and possibly the friend, that I'll chat with. I'm doing since for at least 2
school years, I'm still kicking.

Re: [Audyssey] the gate.

2015-10-16 Thread john
You're correct about the poison, every time you hear that sound you lose 1%
health (on easy, at least).
As far as ghosts go you're probably best off stopping until you get a really
good feel for the game - I've managed to kill one or two moving, but its a
major risk.
For the statues, you can either just keep wacking it until its dead, or use
your bow. They have a lot of hp, so make sure either that you have full
health or that you've got arrows.

Hi John, thanks, I think I'm getting it now. One other thing I'm wondering
is what is the squishing sound I keep hearing after the rats attack me, does
it mean I've been poisoned? It seems to stop once I take the supliment.
Also, how do you go about killing ghosts? I find if I'm running flat out
and run into one, then I'm more likely to die fast, so should I stop and
keep swinging my knife until I hit her? I'm onto level 2 now, and trying to
pass the statue things without dying or being squashed.

Also I love the healing spring, it's got such a lovely sound. :)

Re: [Audyssey] the gate.

2015-10-16 Thread loriduncan
Hi John, thanks, I think I'm getting it now. One other thing I'm wondering
is what is the squishing sound I keep hearing after the rats attack me, does
it mean I've been poisoned? It seems to stop once I take the supliment.
Also, how do you go about killing ghosts? I find if I'm running flat out
and run into one, then I'm more likely to die fast, so should I stop and
keep swinging my knife until I hit her? I'm onto level 2 now, and trying to
pass the statue things without dying or being squashed.

Also I love the healing spring, it's got such a lovely sound. :)

Make sure you clear out the enemies first.
Also, don't wait until you hear the jump sound. Press up and right as
quickly as you possibly can (or just press up while still holding down

Took me a couple tries but I finally beat her! And as difficult as she is
the step-by-step guide did not, in fact lesson the sense of achievement I
felt. Spoiler! But for those having trouble with her I would actually
suggest four rather than three jumps each time and don't, repeat, don't!
try to hit her more than once! You might be able to but you'll almost
certainly die.

I'm in the same boat.I would dare go so far as to call this boss
borderline
if not unfair. I mean yeah I love a good challenge but I think this goes
a
bit too far. Either she needs to not be able to kill you in one hit or
there
need to be more extra lives leading up to her. It also doesn't help that
there are not one but two trap doors in the level which make it hard to

Re: [Audyssey] The gate, the first boss

2015-10-16 Thread Milos Przic

Hey Brian,
I actually succeeded in hitting her more than once. I shoot two arrows and
then jump over her or jump backing away from her. I finished the demo, the
other boss was very sympatic! :)

the step-by-step guide did not, in fact lesson the sense of achievement I

suggest four rather than three jumps each time and don't, repeat, don't!
try to hit her more than once! You might be able to but you'll almost

Re: [Audyssey] looks like i've finally subscribed.

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

There was nothing wrong with your previous subscription. The only
reason your messages did not appear to go through to the list is you
were impatient and did not wait on the moderator, me, to approve your
subscription.

Unlike other mailing lists you may be familiar with we have a strict
security policy regarding new membership. As was stated in the welcome
message, which I'm suspecting you did not read, it states that you
have to be approved by a list moderator before you can post messages.
You can't just subscribe and start sending a million messages without
the moderator first clearing you for posting status.

Unfortunately, I myself am having a lot of medical issues right now.
Tuesday I was in the hospital for tests, I had some doctor
appointments yesterday, and earlier this morning so I have not been
around to do much list management of late. My other moderator quit
some months ago and has not been replaced. So I apologize for the
unusual delay.

The main reason I am explaining all this is you are making a false
assumption about your previous subscription, and just wanted you to
know that your subscription was perfectly fine before you killed
it.The only problem was you were impatient and did not give me enough
time to get to it and update your status. So when I finally had time
to take care of the matter you had already killed the subscription.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] sports games

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

A friend of Jim's apparently is taking over his projects, maintaining
them, and will be working on bug fixes etc. I do not know however if
he plans to add new features or what his long term plans regarding
those games will be.

I will say though that while a full 162 game season for Baseball would
be nice it is quite a lot of work. Not impossible, but a lot of work
for one developer. I've considered writing such a game myself, but my
health has taken a dramatic turn for the worse over the last couple of
years so I'm not physically up to creating anything that complex at
the moment. Still, it seems to me that someone in this community
should be able to do it.

Re: [Audyssey] The gate, the first boss

2015-10-16 Thread Jody McKinniss

[Audyssey] sports games

2015-10-16 Thread Nail Alimzhanov
Hi guys. Would anybody please tell me about some sports games for the
blind? I know well about ten pin alley, super tennis, crazy tennis,
beach volleyball. And sure I know about Jim Kitchen's games. They are
actualy my favorites. By the way another question i had. When Jim was
with us i sometimes shared my ideas on sports games with him. He never
really waned to change anything n his baseball game, though i was
suggesting him to make a possibility of playing a long 162 games regular
season with an ability of picking up your favorite team and taking it
through the season. I also had some ideas about making his football game
more interesting to be played and he told me that he might take the
ideas in consideration, but unfortunately he passed away. So i was
thinkingsince i have no idea at all about programming and writing games
maybe there is someone who could take over and continue Jim's great
work. I am pretty sure he would be happy to see his games get improved.

Thanks. Nail Alimzhanov. Moscow, Russia.

Re: [Audyssey] games for IOS?

2015-10-16 Thread Devin Prater
As a high school graduate with plenty of tech knowledge, I know how Rajmund
feels. Now, I'm not advocating using games and all in the classroom, and most
games on the iPhone require movement and stuff that just can't be played just
silently, so I think he wants this for after school.
I had a school iPod, and iPad Mini. I used my iPhone all my senior year, and
teachers knew it. They also knew, though, that I got my work done. That's the
key, there. I downloaded Google docs, had a braille display or keyboard, and
did my work on my iPhone and submitted it through email. Then I got on Facebook
or played an MUD or whatever Iwanted. I admit, when I first got my iPod, I
emailed online friends during class and got caught doing it. Yes, the device
was locked, and I did use my school email address to do it. Yes, kids have been
caught playing clash of clans, crash of clans, whatever, in class on their
iPads. But my point is, class is for class, and when you have a teacher that
teaches, you won't have time to play games and such. Our teachers were
easy-going, and sometimes we didn't do all that much in some classes. So I'd be
online or read a book when Bard Mobile was still the top dog.
Now, being older, I still don't have a problem with what I did. I took notes on
my iPhone, did my English and French work on my iPod a year prior to the Phone,
and even did math on the devices, with the help of UEB.
Another point I have to make is that if a student is held back, especially if
the student is bright, he will seek ways around things. He, well at least me,
I, emailed with the iPod, and got Google voice, with GVMax, so that I could
text. No Raymund, this won't work with the braille sense, fore GVMax is no
more, sorry. So yes, I texted in class, I texted all the time back then, and
when I didn't use the school email address, I used my gamil, which I added. I
got caught there too, since I added the address to my step-dad's Android phone
to play with it, so my family got involved. Then, I simply had my Google Voice
texts sent to my Apple email, so that no one but me could get it. No one found
out fter that. And the only reasons why I got caught the other times is because
I was careless those times. I have no problems with what I did, because I
ultimately learned things about myself and about people in general.

2015-10-16 Thread Marty Schultz
The reason that it's non-trivial is that it requires a physics engine to
control the ball, and a way to give the player a lot of information at
the same time - number of bricks, position of the paddle, angle and
speed of the ball, etc. Fortunately, I have a great group of blind
gamers that can tell me what works and what doesn't.

Awesome! As I said, I've never understood why there haven't been more
attempts to make accessible versions of breakout. From a sound scape
perspective it's not too different from pong, and yet the gameplay is
far more interesting and can have far more potential variations,
especially when you add analogue style control such as the gyro of Ios
devices into the mix.

I'll look forward to that one.

Actually, breakout is the next game i'm building. Ken Downey gave me
some good audio files that I need to check out. I've been kind of
busy dealing with 12 games in the app store that broke due to changes
in ios9 text-to-speech. Most of that work is done now, so I can get
back on track.

Hi Dark,
I emailed Marty recently and put forward a couple of suggestions
to him, my first one for an accessible version of Packman and my
second one for a space-invaders type game. I know we have a few of
those already but another clone would be good, since Audio Defence
doesn’t work for now under IOS 9. Marty and I discussed Packman and
he thought it would be good to start with a maze game first before
tackling Packman, to which I agreed. Marty was concerned about how
we would know when we were approaching the ghosts in Packman so I
was explaining “Packman Talks” and how it was played.
Getting back to Audeio Defence, I have reported the problem I am
experiencing under IOS 9 to the developer.

Re: [Audyssey] iPhone game controllers for games like Zombie Arena, BlindSide, and A Blind Legend.

2015-10-16 Thread Dakotah Rickard
My point, rather ineloquently put this morning, was that these games
often have other control methods (Audio Defense having three distinct
ones.) Adding an external controller into the mix would basically just
open another control method.
I like the unique activities associated with the iDevices and other
smartphone tech. I think that there are, however, certain advantages
to a controller. One of them is novelty. Imagine playing a standard
style arcade game or a game with the control scheme of a standard
console title, only because of the Android/iOS accessibility API's, we
have opportunities to have these games voice themselves.
We are aware of the unique opportunities given to us by the
touchscreen/accelerometer interfaces of smart tech, such as they are.
However, I think that at least allowing the controllers for novelty's
sake detracts none at all.
Think of it this way. I often used Audio Defense as a sort of personal
training, holding the phone's guns in different ways for each weapon:
holding the phone extended and braced with the rifles and shotguns,
taking a knee with the machinegun, so forth and so on. Other people
simply sit in an office chair and tap, allowing themselves to spin
freely to face whatever target comes up. I wouldn't play the game that
way, but I recognize it as a valid personal choice. Similarly, I don't
particularly care for the tilt method of gameplay, but it is a valid
personal choice. Adding controller support to Audio Defense would
actually perhaps entice me to play it that way, at least for
interest's sake.
More developers being aware that the controllers are out there means
more developers adding them as optional or standard control methods.
Imagine, for example, the Nebula space ship game. It would somewhat
detract from the unique presentation of the game to add controller
support, but the tilt method is mildly clumsily implemented there, and
there aren't a huge deluge of similar titles on iOS as there are on
Windows, so allowing controller support could prove very interesting
for that game. It would change the challenge, not lessen it.
I think that's the key with any control method. The results should be
similar, across a large sample, no matter what control style is used.
If one method is particularly easy, another particularly challenging,
perhaps the methods ought to be scaled a little differently.

All of this simply means that having access to controller support
would add a new level of possibility to an arena already exploring new
horizons.

I hope this is a bit more reasonably and understandably put.

hello, perception is not going to be accessible. They wanted to make it work,
but couldn't figure out how to make the game work. They are going to donate
some of the proceeds from the game to afoundation for the blind, though I
forget which one. More information can be found on their kick starter page.

Subject: New game! Ratings War: Win market share in the news wars of 2061!

Download “Ratings War" today on Steam, iOS, or
Android.
View this email in your browser

We’re proud to announce that Ratings War, the
latest in our popular “Choice of Games” line of multiple-choice
interactive-fiction games, is now available for Steam, iOS, and Android. It’s
33% off until October 9th.

Implant cameras in your eyes to win the news wars
of 2061! Record your way through dystopian New Angeles, solving multiple
murders and conquering the airwaves as you go!

“Ratings War” is a thrilling 80,000-word
interactive novel by Eddy Webb, where your choices control the story. It’s
entirely text-based–without graphics or sound effects–and fueled by the vast,
unstoppable power of your imagination.

Outwit your rivals at the biggest news network in
the industry to win market share and dominate the ratings. As one of the first
reporters with a pair of cybernetic eyes, you’ll break stories while you live
them–and become a celebrity when you uncover a vast criminal conspiracy.

When you blow the whistle on a human trafficking
operation, will you focus on facts or on fame? Will you strike out as an
independent, or follow the guidelines of your network? You can escape from an
underground organ farm–but can you get your footage on the air and win the
Ratings War?

a.. Play a future-noir story of murder,
corruption, and mystery.
b.. Develop your reporting style as you balance
your ambition and integrity.
c.. Decide what facts make it to air, and how
to spin them.
d.. Break the rules to get your story.
e.. Play as male, female, or non-binary.
f.. Straight, gay, and bisexual romance
options.
We need your support to continue delivering our
games on Steam. Our goal is to release our entire catalog of interactive novels
on Steam. Based on the extraordinary performance of Choice of Robots and
Champion of the Gods, both which made it onto Steam’s front page this year,
Valve has allowed us to ship a handful of additional games. We’ll need to
continue to deliver outstanding results to prove that interactive fiction can
be successful on Steam.

We’re asking all of our fans to follow us on
Steam. Even if you don’t use Steam that much, it will be a big help if you sign
up to follow us there, because the more followers we get, the better visibility
we get on Steam’s curator list. (Our goal is to hit 3,000 followers for our
Steam curation page; we’re about 75% of the way there as I write this!)

When you follow us, you’ll see our games and our
recommended games right on your Steam home page. It’s free, and it’s a big help
to us, so follow us today!

We hope you enjoy playing Ratings War. We
encourage you to tell your friends about it, and recommend the game on
StumbleUpon, Facebook, Twitter, and other sites. Don’t forget: our initial
download rate determines our ranking on the App Store. The more times you
download in the first week, the better our games will rank.

P.S. Try Bookburners from Serial Box, created by
Max Gladstone
Max Gladstone, author of Choice of the Deathless,
is working on a delightful new serialized (non-interactive) novel, Bookburners,
with our friends at Serial Box. (Serial Box is like HBO for books: top-shelf
writing in weekly episodes.)

Magic is real, and hungry—trapped in ancient
texts and artifacts, only a few who discover it survive to fight back.
Detective Sal Brooks is a survivor. Freshly awake to just what dangers are
lurking, she joins a Vatican-backed black-ops anti-magic squad: Team Three of
the Societas Librorum Occultorum. Together they stand between humanity and
magical apocalypse. Some call them the Bookburners. They don’t like the label.

If you enjoyed Deathless, we think you’ll really
enjoy Bookburners, too!

Bookburners and all future Serial Box serials
will be available on the site, in the app, and on iTunes, Amazon, Kobo, Google
Play, and B&N.

You also have practically no room to move. No matter how I jump she nearly
always gets me right off the bat. And even when I do manage to get away from
her for a few precious moments I almost can't hit her because she's right on
top of me. And if I do I then have no chance to get away from her. And this
is on the Easy difficulty mind. Like I said before I love a good challengin
boss fight, I just think this goes a little too far.

Re: [Audyssey] the gate.

2015-10-16 Thread Jody McKinniss
You have to be quick about it. Get to the second creaky floor board,
then hit up arrow. Very quickly he will jump. So right as you hear
the jump sound, hit the right arrow and hold it. Again, you have to
be quick about it. I'm about halfway through the castle, and I am
very, very pleased with what I have seen thus far. A note to Aaron:
Your manual says that lightning rods work on vampires, but this does
not seem to be the case. Holding down space bar with the lightning
rod inevitably seems to get me killed. I have found that it is easier
to use my knife and jump away.

I'm in the same boat.I would dare go so far as to call this boss borderline
if not unfair. I mean yeah I love a good challenge but I think this goes a
bit too far. Either she needs to not be able to kill you in one hit or there
need to be more extra lives leading up to her. It also doesn't help that
there are not one but two trap doors in the level which make it hard to keep
track of things.

I passed the first two levels and found the gray lady (50 shades of the gray
lady? That's how sadistic she is). She seams impossible! I listenned to the
guide, who told me that the idea is not to get neither near nor far from
her, but no matter what I do, after a first few shots at her she appears and
takes a big bite of me!
I tried jumping over her, tried nearing a little then shooting, tried a

You hear the two creaking steps.
On the second step, you tap up arrow.
You never release the right arrow, move over the pit, land on the other

You're moving right towards the hole.
You hear the two creaking steps.
On the second step, you tap up arrow.
You never release the right arrow, move over the pit, land on the other
side, and keep moving.

Nope, what you're doing wrong is you're tapping the arrow. It says in the
manual that you need to hold the left or right arrow after you jump. Tapping
does nothing.

Hi. You earn lives back at a rate of one per twenty minutes.
As for the sword, have you tried using your shield to protect
yourself, to get an idea of when to swing? You can also use it to bash
opponents' weapons aside, letting you get a couple hits in. Not every
enemy will let you hit them as they shout or strike.

Hi.

You can search the audiogames.net database by genre, including word games
and trivia games.
Off the top of my head, the blind gamers spoonbill games which include
boggle, scrabble and crosswords over at
http://www.omninet.net.au/~irhumph/blindgamers.htm might do.

There are also the games by the late great Jim Kitchin over at
http://www.kitchensinc.net/ which include once again a trivia game and a
very funny hangman.

Also if you go to 7-128.com there are several definition based games such
as synonyms and antonyms.

There were also a couple of games by Daniel Zingaro which at one point were
commercial but have sinse been made freeware, these include chainlink and
search party. I'm unfortunately not sure where these are at the moment or
who is hosting them.

hth.

this is probably only a selection of the games I happen to remember, your
probably best off searching audiogames.net as I said for a more complete
list.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] BGT and windows 10

2015-10-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello Paul,

As far as I am aware BGT should work fine on Windows 10. It was
written in C++ and was designed for a modern Windows environment so
wouldn't for see any major issues with Windows 10.

Re: [Audyssey] free windows based word games

2015-10-16 Thread dark

Dark.

I don't know many off the top of my head. You may have more luck on
audiogames.net.
I know that spoonbill have a few you may find interesting, but can't tell
you exactly which ones.
All this said, there are a lot of word games. My total ignorance on the
subject doesn't mean they're not out there.
